AmeriHealth was established in 1994 and originally offered employer plans in certain parts of Pennsylvania. They expanded and today cover all of New Jersey and parts of Pennsylvania with individual and family plans along with employer plans and Medicare options.

AmeriHealth Caritas is also part of the AmeriHealth family of companies. AmeriHealth Caritas began in 1983 and now offers Medicaid plans in 13 states and D.C. along with individual and family plans in four states.

Together the family of companies serves over 5 million members.

Does AmeriHealth Cover Drug and Alcohol Rehab?

Most AmeriHealth plans will cover at least some addiction treatment in accordance with the 2010 Affordable Care Act (ACA). However, the amount each plan carries and the requirements to ensure coverage applies will vary from plan to plan. That means it’s important to check the details of your insurance before you commit to rehab.

Also all insurance plans will focus on covering medically necessary care. Working with your doctor to get a treatment plan based on your needs will help you get coverage for the addiction treatment that’s appropriate for your situation.

Hello im Ashley and im an addict. My whole life has been filled with chaos and trauma. Some from my own doing and some that wasnt my fault. There is not a single bad word i can say abouy my experience at Beachway Therapy Center. My time there was cut short thanks to my own self-sabotaging behavior. Even then Beachway still treated me with compassion and the desire to help me. My situation was a unusual one. I came into the trauma program with a clean date of April 16th 2014. So at 11 years clean i was dealing with bipolar disorder, intense anxiety, a very unhealthy toxic relationship and an intense desire to break generational curses for my children. My history is one that involves homelessness, street drugs and a street mentality. Beachway took on the challenge of helping me work thru that trauma. I opened up to the program and other woman like never before. I had an amazing counselor, amazing case manager, and amazing staff that were there anytime i had moments of high anxiety or worry. I am so disappointed i ruined my chances of having a chance at going thru a trauma program with Beachway. Just in the short time i was there i did gain a small sense of self back. If you were like me and worry about making friends with the other clients because they wont understand you or like you, that is not even close to true. I found a sense of community that i couldnt find anywhere else in my life. If i manage to find a magic lamp, one of my wishes would definitely be used on looking young forever after that id wish to feel the peace and serenity i felt at Beachway. Thanks to them i had just enough courage to get me and my kids out of my bad situation. Now my goal is to continue with trauma therapy. Do not be me and let your past dictate your future. No matter how clean you are from drugs that trauma will creep up on you and when it does use tools like Beachway to seek help instead of the alternative, and please for the love of your higher power get out of your own way and accept their help before you get kicked out like i did. I am forever grateful. Thanks for letting me share my expierence, strength and hope.

My experience at Banyan was very good. The staff was very helpful, the therapy was extremely beneficial , and the food was great! Like with all rehabs, it is what you make of it. If you go there thinking everything is perfect, you’ll be disappointed, it’s not. If you go for simply a social experience, it’s not a resort. If you go because you’re serious about your recovery, it’s a great place to take the first step !

Loved Beachway. I was extremely anxious with everyday panic attacks, and the medicine was no longer working. At Beachway I found a way to control my attacks and anxiety. It is not easy and sometimes I felt like it wasn’t going to work. We worked through my childhood traumas and I learned techniques on how to defuse my anxiety. Loved Dina’s honest and hardcore classes and also Gigi’s trauma class. From the intake department, to the counselors, security, kitchen staff, Directors, Nurses and everyone that worked there I thank you. ❤️

I went there in November of 2024 because I was desperate to get help. They were very helpful with getting me there, checking with me before I got there, and making sure I didn't change my mind about going (as most of us do when It comes to getting sober). I had an awesome time there, the staff was great (they had their off days, as us alcoholics/addicts do). We were busy most all day every day. They take you to the gym 3x a week, they do panels, and outside meetings as well. The facility itself is clean, there's laundry machines, snacks & coffee on deck 24/7, they take you to the vape shop and wal mart once a week, and they are working on more outside activities. There were tvs and DVD players in every unit with a TON of dvds. No bed time so you are free to roam around the facility or chill and watch TV. The groups got a little boring (but if you are with a good group of guys they are a lot of fun and informative). The way insurance and every thing works was a little frustrating because it's on a weekly basis if you stay on the treatment side or go to phase 2. You are allowed your phone 3x a day for a hour each time. The units are awesome, it is an apartment (if you go try to get into the one above the kitchen on the left haha). Mike who is one of the main dudes is an awesome person! I am currently on day 63 and if it weren't for the lighthouse I would most likely be either dead or in the process of drinking myself to death. If you are in need of help, do the hard thing and ask for it. The money, job, or whatever it is that is keeping you from going won't be there much longer if you continue to do what you're doing. I love you all and hope this helps!

I would like to express my gratitude to the Lighthouse and all the staff who had helped me and guided me. I stayed at the Lighthouse for about 90 days and in that timeframe I was able to receive one on one Care meet with a therapist. All my needs were met. Everyone went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable in a very uncomfortable situation. I am forever grateful for this facility and being there for me at a time when I needed it the most.Thank you, Stephanie and Julie for holding my hands as I walk through those doors!

I have been fighting hard to recover from a heroin/fentanyl addiction and depression since 2013. I have been to more treatment centers than I can count. Ever since I stepped through the doors of First Step, change really started to happen when it seemed hopeless. Mainly because I truly feel loved, respected, and a part of when I am there. Also, I am still a part of a community even after I've walked out the doors. Being there or around the community just feels right and I've never felt that comfortable in any other place or recovery community before. I have recovered from a seemingly hopeless state of mind and body, and I would recommend First Step Behavioral Health to anyone and everyone. First Step will always have a special place in my heart. I have redeemed a lost piece of myself. I am blessed with the miracle of having freedom, peace, joy, and contentment for the first time in my life. I couldn't do it without them.

This is the best treatment center you will find and I highly recommend. After many failed attempts at recovery this was the place I truly learned honesty, integrity, fellowship and courage for myself and it wasn't so much through the incredible knowledge I received, which was also of importance, but it was through the day in interaction of the staff here and the examples set for me that made a lasting impact. People that became like family and I will never forget them. Thank you First Step, for everything.

I love this place with all my heart and the people I got to know during my time there. The structure of the program combined with the camaraderie of the people around you is a match made in heaven. Hands down the best decision I made for myself to save my life. I had no idea what to do with my life as I was spiraling into a seemingly inescapable abyss until I reached out to Treehouse. I had my reservations about going to a place like Treehouse as a member of the LGBTQ+ community but the amount of support and acceptance I received even before I committed to going was incredible. I gained the knowledge and tools that I use on a daily basis that help me live life to the fullest potential. I discovered new things about myself while going through the program by living outside of my comfort zone and allowing myself to try things I never thought I would be interested in. Treehouse was able to create a space where I could explore these new things and create strong bonds with guys that impacted my recovery in the best way possible and gave me a stronger foundation to move forward with my life. The therapy was life changing, shoutout to Chuck and Ryan, they saw something in me that I could not see for myself and helped me bring that out. The coaches were incredible as well, shoutout to Dylan, he taught me so much that went above and beyond physical fitness and weight training. Vechi and Brandon were instrumental in working with me to get me the help that I needed and incredible human beings. Words cannot express how grateful and honored I feel to have gone through and graduated from this program. If you're looking for a place that'll give you the best chance at success in recovery, this is it. You are worth it.

When I first walked through the doors at Treehouse, I was lost, broken, and trapped in a cycle of addiction that I never thought I could escape, Never! I had become a prisoner to alcohol and drugs, and my life was spiraling out of control. The guys at Treehouse, there programs, and there unwavering support, helped me find my way back to the person I was meant to be!At my lowest point, I felt like there was no hope But within the walls of Treehouse, I found Compassion, Understanding, and the TOOLS I needed to fight for my sobriety. Through counseling, support groups, and the kindness of those who had walked this path before me, I learned that I was NOT alone. I discovered strength within myself that I never knew existed, and for the first time in a long time, I believed in the possibility of change. I learned to take Responsibility for my Actions, to heal from the pain I had caused myself and others, and to embrace a FUTURE filled with HOPE. TREEHOUSE gave me the courage to rebuild relationships, to Chase Dreams I had long abandoned, and to live a life of PURPOSE and CLARITY.Today, I am proud to say that I am sober. Every morning, I wake up with a sense of Gratitude instead of dread. I have regained my health, my relationships, and most importantly, my sense of self-worth. NONE of this would have been possible without the GUIDANCE and SUPPORT that Treehouse provided me during my darkest days.I just want to say Thank You for being the place where I found healing, hope, and a second chance at life. I have and will carry the lessons I have learned within me ALWAYS, and I hope to one day give back to others who are fighting the same battle. Because of you, I am no longer just surviving, I am truly living!Much Love..

RCA changed my life. The best part is the people who work there- most of who are in recovery themselves. They are so educated, relatable, easy to talk to, and understanding. Hey Everyone at RCA Westminster!Rikku here, your favorite fluffy, Siberian Husky therapy dog, checking in with my human mom! We've been having a blast visiting you every Tuesday for about a year now, and we absolutely love being a part of the RCA Westminster family. It's our special way of giving back, and it brings us so much joy!You guys always make us feel so incredibly welcome! The staff are the best seriously, sometimes I think they sneak in even more cuddles than the patients (and I'm totally okay with that!). My mom loves to get me dressed up in a different bandana or outfit each week, so keep an eye out for my stylish looks! Seriously, she has something for every occasion! Our Tuesday routine involves visiting each of the three groups Wachusett, Monadnock, and Rescue for around 20-30 minutes each. I love showing off my tricks and all the cool things I've learned. It's also great hearing about your own furry friends and just getting to snuggle, especially when someone's having a tough time.My mom's face lights up whenever a patient or staff member says they've been waiting all day for our visit! We really put our hearts into making each Tuesday a special and uplifting experience for everyone.A Note from Rikku's Mom:Being part of the RCA Westminster community has been such an eye-opening and heartwarming experience. We adore our Tuesday visits, and the staff there make it so easy and enjoyable!Their genuine affection for Rikku is wonderful to see, and they always look forward to his visits and his ever-changing wardrobe.Rikku has totally got the RCA routine down. The moment we pull into the parking lot, he's ready to go, tail wagging, knowing he's about to get lots of love (and maybe a few treats, ok ok a LOT of treats!). He's even starting to pick up on when someone needs a little extra attention and will stay by their side a bit longer he's such a smart boy! We've attached some photos from our visits around RCA. You'll see Rikku with the 12 Steps, the RCA Westminster sign, the Serenity Prayer, a fun Thanksgiving picture from the great room, and one of Rikku and mom (with him in a therapist's chair and me in a patient's).Thank you all so much for having us! We're already looking forward to many more Tuesdays filled with smiles and furry cuddles!Warmly,Rikku and Dorothea(Just a reminder that in every photo, Rikku is safely on his leash, under my control, away from patients and staff, and wearing his official therapy dog tags.)

This Rehab facility was absolutely life-changing for me. There are so many great things I could list about this place. The staff were knowledgeable, compassionate, friendly and MOST of all: EXTREMELY accommodating and understanding with requests. The house was located in a quiet and peaceful residential neighborhood with absolute stunning views overlooking the ocean. The fun activities and experiences/outings were extremely helpful coping skills for my mental health and cravings. At Laguna View Detox it is evident that the staff care about you from the time you walk in the front door.I would like to point out that while this experience was amazing, there are a couple of things I would like to point out as areas for growth and improvement.1. Food - the food was sub-par in my humble opinion. While they do cater to dietary restrictions and allergies, there were many occasions that felt like the same food was repetitive, less-healthy, and lacked the right amount to serve everyone to their satisfaction. It would have been nice to maybe have the option for meal prep or an activity cooking course to teach people the skill and value in cooking together as well as considering a part-time chef position to develop those skills in staff and clients alike.2. Staff/clients - While 90% of the staff/clients were absolutely amazing, there were a couple that maybe could ve brought more value to the table or fulfilled their duties so others wouldn t have to suffer the consequences. It s not fair nor realistic to expect perfection from everyone but it is possible to differentiate those that are there to just collect a paycheck or take advantage of the care the system provides. These problems will undoubtedly always arise in every work environment and company alike thus should be expected time to time. The higher management can hopefully take more proactive measures to prevent the house becoming a toxic environment as well as addressing the problems at the core of the individuals.Once again I would highly recommend this place to anyone seriously committed to attaining a peaceful and healthy life of sobriety. I am forever indebted and grateful to LVD for my experience. I am also proud of myself for making the best of this opportunity and utilizing all the tools, skills and knowledge taught from the wise and relatable staff.I have made life-long friends, relationships, coping skills and knowledge that I will carry throughput my lifetime toward sobriety. I just wanted to thank you all for everything.Much love,Joe

I would give 10 stars if I could. I called the number on their webpage in the early morning on a Sunday and their director of intake, T.J. answered . He listened to me try to explain the nightmare I m living in with my son and he made me feel so much more calm and I felt as if I was talking to a friend or family. It was amazing. He found my son a place in their facility right away and explained the process and what to expect, even sharing his own experiences. I have never dealt with this before so I had a lot of catching up to do and I was literally in the midst of a serious crisis with my son which is already enough. I don t think I could ve handled this situation without the patience and support everyone at Laguna Detox but especially T.J. offered me. Unfortunately our insurance declined us in the 11th hour which was petrifying, but TJ called me himself and gave me a handful of alternative places and helped me call them and check for availability. What a difference that made. TJ ended up finding the best alternative in our area and hours later I had my son in their care and he s getting the attention and care he deserves and I can finally take a deep sigh of relief. TJ reached out throughout the entire process giving us his support and care and even checked in a couple days into my sons treatment to see how we were doing. TJ is one of those humans you pray for when you or anyone you love is in a crisis. Just a gem! Thank you TJ and Laguna Detox, I appreciate you and would recommend you to anyone.

What Are AmeriHealth Plans?

AmeriHealth offers multiple plans through their family of companies. This includes individual and family plans along with Medicare options and Medicaid.

You can get individual and family plans through your employer or in the Insurance Marketplace in New Jersey or Delaware or Florida. There are also Marketplace options in North and South Carolina. If you get your insurance through the Marketplace your plan is likely to be a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) or Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO) plan. With an HMO you will have a doctor who serves as your primary care physician (PCP). Your PCP will give you referrals to specialists within the provider network and help with any needed prior authorizations. An EPO doesn’t require you to get a referral to see a specialist like an addiction counselor or therapist. Both HMOs and EPOs only cover in network providers unless there’s an emergency or need for urgent care.

AmeriHealth offers Medicare Advantage plans in New Jersey as well. Medicare Advantage is a full replacement plan for Original Medicare. It covers the same things as Original Medicare but often has additional benefits. The AmeriHealth Advantage plan includes routine dental and vision care along with hearing coverage and virtual medical care. AmeriHealth’s Advantage plan is a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) which means you can see out of network providers although you’ll pay quite a bit more out of pocket. You can also see in network specialists without a referral.

AmeriHealth Caritas offers Medicaid plans and Dual Eligible Medicare Medicaid plans in a variety of states. Medicaid coverage is determined by the state but you will have access to a wide variety of care which includes addiction treatment. You will need to choose medical providers that accept your state’s Medicaid plan.

What Inpatient Addiction Treatment Does AmeriHealth Cover?

Most AmeriHealth plans cover inpatient care as required by the Affordable Care Act. Since insurance focuses on medically necessary treatments getting a treatment plan from your doctor is essential.

For example, the ASAM assessment evaluates the patient’s needs and obstacles along with resources and support system. This information helps decide the right level of addiction care whether that’s inpatient treatment or some level of outpatient rehab.

Inpatient care usually begins with medical detox and is followed by a stay of about 3 to 4 weeks in a care center. This is typically the most intensive level of rehabilitation available.

What Outpatient Rehab Does AmeriHealth Cover?

Outpatient rehab care is a form of addiction treatment that allows patients to continue living at home while attending rehab for multiple hours a week at treatment facility.

These are the three main types of outpatient care:

  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
  • Intensive Outpatient (IOP)
  • General Outpatient

PHP is the most intense type of outpatient care and is also known as day treatment because you’re in rehab all day although you go home in the evenings. IOP is next and requires around 9 hours of treatment each week divided across three days. You can often choose morning or evening sessions to better accommodate your work or school schedule.

General outpatient is the least intensive and meets once or twice a week. The biggest difference between all forms of outpatient and inpatient care is that you can continue living at home during outpatient rehab.

Does AmeriHealth Cover Methadone & Suboxone (MAT)?

Medication assisted treatment (MAT) is often an essential part of addiction recovery. Many AmeriHealth plans cover MAT under behavioral health services.

MAT is commonly used during detox to manage withdrawal symptoms which helps you stay safe and as comfortable as possible during the process. It can also be used as an ongoing treatment of opioid and alcohol use disorders.

Methadone is a long acting full opioid agonist that works on the same receptors as opioids but doesn’t produce a high. Suboxone works similarly to methadone — acting on the same receptors — but it isn’t as strong.

MAT helps you manage cravings and avoid relapse during treatment while you’re learning new skills and mindsets. As you get stronger in recovery you can wean off the medication support and live a fully substance free life.

Does AmeriHealth Cover Other Mental Healthcare?

Most plans provide some level of coverage for mental health treatment thanks to the ACA. However it’s always a good idea to check your specific plan to confirm what’s covered. Mental health treatment may include counseling and crisis support along with and care for co occurring disorders.

When someone is diagnosed with both addiction and another mental health issue it’s called a co occurring disorder. This is common in addiction treatment and should be addressed simultaneously to support successful long term recovery.

Can I Travel Out of State For Treatment With AmeriHealth?

It depends on your exact AmeriHealth plan and whether you can travel out of state. Many plans require that patients stay in a defined provider network unless they need emergency care.

Some plans include coverage for care outside the network but you’ll pay far more for copayments and deductibles. For example the Medicare PPO plan available in New Jersey offers out of network care but it’s much more expensive.

In general staying within your state and your provider network is better to maximize your insurance coverage and reduce costs.

How to Verify Coverage With AmeriHealth

If you need to verify your coverage with AmeriHealth you can either call their customer service number or log into your online member account. This will give you coverage information and help you find in network providers.

Another option is to ask the treatment center you’re considering if they accept your specific plan. Make sure you verify coverage using your exact plan name and not just “AmeriHealth” since they offer a range of plans with varying levels of coverage.
