UniCare Insurance Coverage for Drug & Alcohol Addiction
Explore UniCare’s addiction treatment coverage in West Virginia, including Medicaid options for drug rehab, outpatient programs, and support services.
UniCare is an insurance company that’s a subsidiary of Elevance Health. Recently, they have paired down their offerings and eliminated most of their medical health insurance plans. They have one medical plan left in West Virginia, where they offer a managed Medicaid plan.
Most of their business now comes from working with employers to offer dental, vision, and employee assistance programs to their employees.
Does UniCare Insurance Cover Addiction Treatment?
If you have a UniCare managed Medicaid in West Virginia, that plan covers the full spectrum of addiction treatment, including drug rehab and addiction treatment with medications. So, to answer the question, “Does UniCare Mountain Health Trust cover drug rehab?” the answer is, yes, they do.
If you have the UniCare employee assistance program or EAP, be aware that it’s not a medical plan. While it may cover some outpatient therapy visits, it usually covers no other types of addiction treatment.
I am so grateful for the RCA fellowship! Sharing my story with the Westminster community was a positive experience for me. Everyone was warm and welcoming. Thank you, Peter for helping me get comfortable being uncomfortable. I appreciate Peter asking me to share my story. Knowing that I belong and the connections made with this community, keeps me going! I have learned that sharing my story is about growth and change. Every story matters! That is HOW this works. Speaking these honest, heartfelt words about my experience, strength and hope — I know I am not alone. - Kim R, RCA Devon Alumni, sober date: 9/12/24

The staff at RCA helped me through the toughest time of my life and supported my decisions while I worked on me!! Specifically Rob, Mike, Peter, Max, Brad and Mel…they all knew that I truly wanted my recovery this time (yes relapse is part of my journey) and they respected that I may have to leave early in my treatment due to some major life issues outside of my control. But they all were there to support and talk to me! They made what was already a tough time (let’s face it, rehab is not all fun, but they do show you that you can have fun getting and being sober) easier with a life and death situation outside of the safety of those walls. Moreover, RCA allowed me to breathe and give myself grace and forgiveness - and it also gave me some fairly straight forward tough love with some true recovery stories from the aforementioned staff. We all know recovery is what you put into it and you have to want it…but if you are willing and if you (or your loved one is willing) the EXCEPTIONAL counselors I mentioned will be there to share their experiences, their strength and their hope.

RCA Westminister has a 30 day program that literally has saved my life. This coming from a guy that went there thinking I would be there for a week. From the staff ( amazing ), to the facility and the lifelong friends I have met. The program set me up with a solid foundation of recovery. I am now a proud member of their Alumni Association. I stay connected on a daily basis with my lifelong RCA friends. And yes I took yoga for the first time in my life! 😄👍…Such a great place ! Save your life and spend the 30 days !

I cannot say enough good about Aware Recovery Care going back to February 2023. My first involvement was with their In-Home Detox team consisting of RN Jenn Aguire and nurses Tabitha and Krystal who came to my home for at least seven straight days to get me detoxed. This was critical to me as at the time I was unwilling to enter in residence detox having had a negative experience in the past. I credit them with saving my life. Their kind and compassionate care showed me that there was indeed some hope for me going forward. Following detox Aware counselors Sam Hayes and Amber Gelinas continued home visits working very closely with me in keeping me on the road to sobriety. I also received monthly assessments by an RN and a session with a Psychiatrist. After six months my insurance lapsed but thankfully I was eligible to enter their Alumni Program consisting of multiple Zoom meetings during the week with Aware professionals. In addition they also host various events in different locations with other Alumni of the program. You always feel that Aware is right there with you every step of the way. I could carry on much longer but let me finish by saying that I consider the Aware professionals I have dealt with to be more than just counselors but as friends as well. I am welcome back in the lives of my children and most importantly my Grandchildren. On November 24 I will be collecting my Nine Month sobriety chip at my AA Home Group. I credit a great deal of my success on Aware Recovery.

Great program, great people! I wouldn’t be where I am at today if it weren’t for participating in and completing AWARE. I would recommend anyone interested to give it a chance, it works if you want it!
I have always been treated with respect and have had wonderful care at the Shepherd Center.
Everyone is very knowledgeable and listen to any concerns or questions I may have.
Having PPS it is important to me that most everyone is knowledgeable about Polio and PPS and how it can affect my life.
I love the accessibility at Shepherd and wish everyone would realize how important accessibility is to someone who uses a power chair and everyone who uses other tools for life for their disability.
I Hope and pray that one day everyone in our world will understand that accessibility is needed everywhere! Though we may have a disability we are people who love life, want to be respected and love to be independent as much as possible.
Have a wonderful day! Leslie

Therapist Lexi cares deeply about her patients and takes her job very seriously. Would highly recommend.
When it was colum health, it was THE BEST. The doctors and the staff and nurse practitioners truely care and want to make a difference. Now it's changed hands, obviously the same people that still work there are still wonderful but their policies are a little different and it just seems colder.

You guys have been a very important part of my recovery and I must say my experience from the psychiatrist to the therapist and the group facilitator are all wonderful at what they do and I want to move to another state but I don't think I will find the level of care and professionalism I've received at midtown.
I just wanted to say thank you to all the staff at singer island. I had a great experience. I especially want to thank the LIV team. Troy, Adam Angie and Dakota are all so amazing!! They challenged me to get comfortable with being uncomfortable and “DO HARD SHIT!!!” They made me realize that I can do so much more that I thought possible. Love you guys! Singer island is a great rehab but with the LIV PROGRAM singer island is the best!!

My experience at Singer Island Rehab was truly life changing! I learned to love myself again with self care for my MIND and BODY. I learned for the first time in a rehab that my addiction is not who I am! It was what I used to get out of my head when it was too much to handle. Thru the groups, I was able to be open and honest with my people I grew to call my little rehab family in the 31 days I was there. Individual therapy sessions with Anjalee were so helpful and I felt heard & understood. Facilitators really we’re passionate about helping all of us, by teaching us all they could so we can stay Sober! The LIV program was the part that really built my confidence by allowing me to “Do Hard Shit” ( the motto of the LIV program) that I would never have done otherwise, such as cold plunging 20 mornings I believe, rock climbing, pickleball and just waking up at 5:15 am for 3 weeks for Sunrise. Be present and grounded! I even got out of my shell and painted a picture on the new surf board for 2025-2026 that clients can sign when they really jump into the LIV program! I am eternally grateful for this journey I started there! I would refer anyone there to find out the Why? Behind our addictions…. the mind and brain can repair and change!
They're very friendly and very accommodating if you're late they kind of help you out they've done an outstanding job taking care of me

My dad was brought here for continued care, and I can confidently say this is the best LTACH we’ve experienced. Most of the employees here are incredibly compassionate, attentive, and genuinely caring. The staff overall are truly GREAT!
Starting with the 3rd floor Nursing Manager, Joshua — an exceptional leader. He is understanding, a great listener, and was consistently supportive. He made a difficult time so much more bearable for our entire family. We are truly grateful for his presence and professionalism.
A big thanks also goes to the night-shift Nurse Supervisor, Chris, who was equally outstanding and always on top of things.
The nursing team deserves major recognition as well. Sylvia is top tier, and Andrea, Brigitte, Fidaa, Bosky, Jennifer, Dorian, Ritchie, Rincy, and Agaa were all excellent and deeply caring throughout.
Respiratory Tech Joby stood out for his professionalism and kindness, along with team members like Vikram, Mercy, Billy, Benzie, and Anna. Unfortunately, I have to give 4 stars instead of 5 due to one very poor experience with a tech named Sheena, which did affect our overall impression of the respiratory department.
I also want to commend the wonderful security team at the main entrance — Fedle, Bob, and Jerry were always warm and helpful. Special shoutout to Jasimine for her positive attitude.
There are many more staff members whose names I can’t recall, but they all contributed to a truly positive experience. If you’re considering this facility for a loved one, I wholeheartedly recommend it. You can bring your family member here with peace of mind knowing they’ll be well cared for.
I’ve been a patient here for 4 years and I have nothing but good things to say about the staff and their practice!

After a long search for a good therapist, Tom has been the most helpful tool in my life. His experience and care shows through his work. Misty, the receptionist, is also the best receptionist I've ever met. She knows me by name as soon as I walk in and is always helpful with any needs or questions I have. I couldn't recommend a better service

Frequently Asked Questions
What Types of Plans Does UniCare Offer?
While UniCare only offers one pure health plan, they do have other products that can help you address your mental health and move toward the treatment you need.
UniCare offers a comprehensive Employee Assistance Program. These programs aren’t medical insurance. They’re a benefit your employer may provide in addition to health insurance. As a result, they don’t cover things like alcohol and drug rehab, or medications that treat substance use disorders.
The purpose of this benefit is usually to connect you with resources that might help you in different areas of your life. These resources may include counseling sessions, legal help, financial help, and child or elder care assistance.
West Virginia’s Medicaid Program is called Mountain Health Trust. UniCare is one of the insurance providers that you can choose to manage your Mountain Health Trust plan. These plans are intended for people who have low income. To get a UniCare Mountain Health Trust plan, you first need to qualify for Medicaid through the West Virginia online human services portal.
UniCare Mountain Health Trust is an HMO plan. This means that you must get care from the providers in their network, otherwise they won’t pay for it—unless it’s an emergency. If you’re thinking of signing up for an HMO type plan like this one, it’s a good idea to verify that the providers you’re used to seeing are in their network.
You may also want to check that they have care available near to you so that you don’t have to travel too far to get to it. Fortunately, this plan is accredited by the NCQA, which provides assurance that they have enough coverage for services to meet the needs of their members—needs such as drug rehab.
UniCare also allows employers to offer vision benefits that include eye exams and access to major retail locations where employees can buy glasses or contacts. Members get discounts if they choose options that go above the allowance for frames or other materials.
Finally, UniCare provides life insurance and disability insurance plans for employers to offer their employees. This gives employees and their families financial support if unforeseen circumstances cause injury or even death.
What Does it Mean that UniCare Has NCQA Accreditation?
When a health insurance plan has NCQA accreditation, it means that they’ve been evaluated by a third party to ensure they meet certain standards. To evaluate a plan, they look at the overall quality of care that plan members get. They also drill down and look at a number of specific areas including behavioral health.
Additionally, they check on how satisfied plan members are with the plan. While it’s still a good idea to look at the network yourself, an accreditation from NCQA usually means the plan has done well in these important areas and can likely meet your needs.
Who Does UniCare Mountain Health Trust Serve?
As a managed Medicaid plan, UniCare Mountain Health Trust serves West Virginia residents who have a low income. For most people, low income means that your household income is no more than 138% of the federal poverty line.
Children and pregnant women can get Medicaid with higher household incomes. West Virginia doesn’t have a work requirement for Medicaid at the time of this writing.
Does UniCare Cover Mental Healthcare?
Medicaid is the single largest payer for mental health treatment. UniCare managed Medicaid in West Virginia also covers mental health treatments and treatment for co occurring mental health conditions. A co occurring condition is also called a dual diagnosis. This is the term used to describe when you simultaneously have symptoms of more than one condition. Treatment for dual diagnosis is specialized and mental health and addiction need to be treated together to achieve the best results.
Congress enacted several laws designed to ensure you have access to mental health treatment including the 2008 Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act and the 2010 Affordable Care Act. State administered Medicaid programs must follow these regulations.
However, each state can cover mental health services differently. Behavioral health services for mental health conditions can include counseling and psychotherapy which is also known as talk therapy. Treatments are conducted by trained mental health professionals such as psychologists and therapists along with counselors and clinical social workers.
UniCare also has an employee assistance program product. EAPs are purchased by employers and provide care at no cost to employees. An EAP helps maintain a healthy work environment. This benefits you and your employer.
An EAP can help you address various issues including legal concerns and financial issues and even help with aging parents. They also offer support for mental health such as stress and anxiety along with other mental health conditions. The EAP can help you with life events and relationship issues along with traumatic events and addiction. You have access to trained representatives 24/7/365. These are all mental health stressors that can increase the potential for drug or alcohol addiction.
The UniCare EAP program also offers resources to help with tobacco use and adoption. They have resources for education and identity theft recovery. Legal and financial consultations can help you with budgeting and debt along with credit counseling and estate planning. They offer education on their website about credit monitoring and workplace issues.
What Types of Inpatient Rehab Does UniCare’s Medicaid Plan Cover?
Under UniCare managed Medicaid services you have access to inpatient substance use disorder treatment. You don’t need a referral but care must be medically necessary and you might need preauthorizaton. Your physician can help create a treatment plan for inpatient or residential care to address your substance use disorder. This plan is an integral part of receiving insurance approval for the care you need.
Medical detoxification and residential care can help lay the foundation for long term recovery. Medical detoxification allows you to be supported through the detox process with FDA approved medications and other treatment to reduce withdrawal symptoms. This allows you to detox safely and as comfortably as possible so you can start fresh in rehab.
In residential treatment you’ll be able to focus entirely on your recovery without outside distractions. Customized treatment plans typically include evidence based therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy or motivational interviewing. You may also receive individual and group counseling and peer recovery support services. These approaches help identify addiction triggers and change negative thought patterns. Your thoughts create emotions and feelings which often drive actions.
By changing your negative thought patterns you can change your actions and reduce the potential for relapse. Changing negative thought patterns also helps improve decision making and increases emotional regulation. Each of these steps lays a strong foundation for you to achieve sobriety and sustainable recovery.
What Types of Outpatient Addiction Treatment Does UniCare’s Medicaid Plan Cover?
There are several types of outpatient addiction treatment that UniCare Medicaid plan covers. However, you might have to get prior authorization before being admitted into an outpatient program even if you transition from residential to outpatient at the same facility.
Outpatient care allows you to live at home or in sober living while attending treatment during the day. There are several different levels of outpatient rehab.
A partial hospitalization program provides a highly structured and intensive outpatient treatment. These programs usually provide you with the same level of treatment as you received as an inpatient, but you can go home in the evening. A partial hospitalization program may be the first step in your treatment or it may be used as a transition out of residential care and into the community.
An intensive outpatient program is a step down from a partial hospitalization program. You receive therapy for several hours each week, which generally includes individual and group and even family therapy sessions. You continue to receive evidence based treatments but have greater flexibility in your schedule. Some treatment centers offer IOPs at different times of day so you can accommodate work or school obligations.
A general outpatient treatment program typically includes therapy once or twice a week and may also include group therapy and family therapy sessions. These outpatient programs often include plans for an aftercare program which continues to provide you with support in group and individual settings.
Aftercare programs may or may not be administered by the treatment center, but are usually developed as part of your discharge plan. Your aftercare program is developed depending on your needs and may include community support meetings and alumni programs along with medication management and family and individual therapies.
