About Driftwood Recovery

Driftwood Recovery is a luxury rehab on 85 serene acres in Driftwood, Texas. With a full continuum of care, they offer medical detox, residential treatment, multiple outpatient programs and aftercare. Their programs focus on holistic healing, helping you achieve overall wellness with experiential and proven interventions, physical fitness and nutrition.

What stands out most to me is their breathtaking campus. Whether you’re battling addiction, co-occurring disorders or chronic pain, you can step away from daily life and hone in on recovery. You can explore the beauty of nature with walking trails and mountain biking. Their residential center offers plenty of options for reflection, relaxation and healing. You can access a hot tub, an ADA accessible pool, an infrared sauna and a fully equipped fitness center.

Each program blends treatment best practices with holistic approaches to help you strengthen your mind, body and spirit. You’ll benefit from a customized treatment plan with your unique needs at the forefront. Individual and group therapy, massage therapy, outdoor recreation, ropes courses and chef prepared nutritious meals are available.

Their multifaceted team is trained in various specialized therapies. These include eye movement desensitization & reprocessing therapy for trauma, dialectical behavior therapy and motivational interviewing.

Another standout feature I noticed was their family program. They understand that caring for and educating your family creates a solid foundation for recovery. Your loved ones can benefit from their own therapeutic experience as they learn more about addiction, treatment, nutrition, communication and boundaries. They strive to restore balance in your relationships, fostering a support network that benefits you and your loved ones.

I also love their focus on curating a welcoming community. They create a safe, tight-knit environment with support and encouragement from their staff and peers on similar paths. You’ll have a space to open up and learn from others while tackling challenges and celebrating milestones together.

I started my recovery journey with Driftwood Recovery on 9/28/2017 and have had continuous recovery since. The facility, food, staff, education, and treatment team are top notch, A+, 5 Star. What really sets Driftwood apart is their community integration program post impatient treatment. The alumni group is strong and gets together weekly in addition to several events throughout the year. There are camping trips to state parks (Big Bend) annual Christmas party (over 150 staff and alumni attend each year), bowling, sporting events, concerts etc. I just returned from Peru on a trip that was hosted by Driftwood. We had a total of 18 on this trip, a trip that still has me smiling! If you are seeking help for yourself or a loved one I highly recommend Driftwood. Driftwood changed my life, sounds dramatic but it is very true!

Like every program, they have a few of their own issues. Communication and organization were lacking at times. But overall, a great place to go/send someone if they are struggling with alcohol/substance abuse. If you are struggling with mental health without substance use disorders, there are better options. But for addiction, i think DW is about the best place you can find.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
Intervention services helps family or friends of addicts stage an intervention, which is a meeting in which loved ones share their concerns and attempt to get an addict into treatment. Professional intervention specialists can help loved ones organize, gather, and communicate with an addict. They can guide intervention participants in describing the damage the addict's behavior is causing and that outside help is necessary to address the addiction. The ideal outcome of an intervention is for the addict to go to rehab and get the help they need.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don’t require 24-hour care. PHPs have structured programming (i.e. individual and/or group therapy), and usually meet 3-5 days a week for around 6 hours (i.e. 9am-3m). Some PHPs are residential (patients sleep on site) and some are not, so patients sleep at home. PHPs can last from 1-6 months, and some offer transportation and meals.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

During rehab in Texas, you'll deal with underlying issues that contribute to addiction. By addressing these challenges and learning healthy ways to cope with them, you'll develop strategies that help you live a drug-free lifestyle.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

CBT is a therapeutic approach that is structured, present oriented and directed toward solving current problems by teaching skills and strategies to modify dysfunctional thinking and behaviors. Therapists and counselors at Driftwood Recovery use cognitive behavioral therapy to solve a specifically defined problem. Whether that’s maintaining their sobriety from prescription medication or dealing with a source of chronic pain, we find it works best for focusing on specific client issues.

Dialectical behavioral therapy is one of the most commonly used behavioral therapies in addiction recovery programs. Learn how Driftwood Recovery uses DBT to boost four key areas: mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance. During dialectical behavioral therapy at Driftwood Recovery, therapists and counselors teach individuals to observe and record exactly what’s going on in the current moment. This means not thinking about the past or the future. Contrary to popular belief, immediate sensations don’t cause pain. Instead, the worries related to how the sensations appear or how they might develop are to blame.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

EMDR is a therapeutic modality originally developed to help process trauma. In an EMDR session, a patient is prompted to undergo eye movements that mimic those of REM sleep. This is accomplished by watching a therapist's finger move back and forth across, or following a bar of light. The goal is repetitive sets of eye movements that help the brain reprocess memory, which can significantly reduce the intensity of remembered traumatic incidents. Associated memories can heal simultaneously, leaving patients significantly calmer, more stable, and more emotionally relaxed.

Driftwood Recovery encourage family participation with their Family Program. Often people underestimate the toll addiction and chronic pain management has on families. Their family program educates family members about addiction and chronic pain recovery, allowing the family to support their loved one in the most effective manner, without enabling negative behaviors.

Fitness therapy blends exercise with psychotherapy for a fun, inspiring, and effective way of treating addiction and other issues. By incorporating movement into counseling sessions, clients become more empowered, motivated, and goal-oriented, all while strengthening their bodies and becoming more flexible. Fitness Therapy is usually used to complement a course of treatment (inpatient or outpatient) to make it even more successful. Increasing the connection between a patient’s mind and body helps both with healing as well as in creating new, healthy habits.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Driftwood was my first residential treatment center and to be quite honest it changed my life. I learned so many great tools in order to better myself at Driftwood, and I have developed a great support system full of great people that I can lean on thanks to this treatment center. Driftwood has a excellent alumni program, in which I have developed some of my closest friends. I will forever be grateful for Driftwood for the opportunities it provided for me and the positive direction that it sent my life in.

Driftwood is highly rated for a reason. Through their facilities, staff, and programming, Driftwood Recovery shines as one of the premier treatment centers in the United States. They provided me with all the tools and knowledge I needed to build back my life, through thoughtful and well executed programming. Furthermore, I would absolutely credit the staff as the chief reason I am sober today. They taught me everything they knew about recovery, and went above and beyond in their care. Ultimately, my experience at Driftwood saved my life, and I cannot thank them enough.

Unequipped to treat moderate to severe mental health and chronic pain issues.During the average stay at driftwood, you re constantly invited to pray and think the pain away, but when it comes to offering the best effective treatments available in 2023; Driftwood offers none of them for its lofty cost ($$,$$$.$$)In fact, from the medications they use to their forced therapeutic modalities, Driftwood doesn t actually offer anything that was created within the past 30 years. Their philosophy is that if you are forced to sit through repetitive rudimentary seminars on DBT, CBT, ACT & MBT (ACT being the newest modality developed in 1986), that the patients will somehow magically get better, while in the confines of a place out in the middle of the woods, which in no ways replicates real life experiences.Sadly, their website and clinicians say they are the best of the best at nearly everything under the sun, which is indeed a highly dangerous form of false advertising. And with false advertising, comes falsely hopeful patients. Alarmingly, it is a common occurrence at Driftwood for them to accept hard to treat refractory cases of chronic pain and mental illness, which their doctors and unaligned clinicians are unqualified to treat. And when it comes to healing from trauma & PTSD, driftwood is uninformed of best modern practices and will usually make multiple errors, inflaming the initial trauma itself. When this happens, and the patient realizes that their chances of seeing improvement at Driftwood are slim to none, they start asking Driftwood for help to transfer them somewhere else in the U.S. that is more fitting to their needs. Not only will Driftwood not offer a refund, but they will blame the patient s performance for not getting the results they are desperately seeking to get to stop suffering.Indeed, Driftwood loves to make public examples out of their patients and is ran no better than a corrupt preparatory boarding school for adolescents. Using the vulnerability of patients against themselves by telling their loved ones without consent, stay weary of any kind of promised familial reparations. Unfortunately for both sides, by constantly lying to patients about their length of stay and future autonomy, it breeds mistrust and reciprocated lying. The hypocrisy from the clinicians is so strong, that addicts who already struggle with honesty, have their dishonest habits reinforced. There is no kind of healthy modeling done by the clinicians, and especially by clinical director Jacob Umanzor, a disingenuous overly optimistic social worker, who eerily reminds most patients of summer camp directors from their childhood. With clinicians constantly disagreeing and even voting for the big life decisions on behalf of their patients, the culture at Driftwood is riddled with many complex internal problems. Often times, a patient will not receive a treatment plan throughout their entire stay and will be told to do several opposing things by different clinicians which contradict themselves. This leaves patients confused and aimless, while the clinician s votes grow increasingly more and more powerful over the trajectory of the patient s lives.Honestly, I would recommend over 90% of the treatment centers in America over Driftwood. Whereas most treatment centers nowadays are trying their best to use the newest in line treatments to make a difference, the only aspect of driftwood that separates itself from its competition is the offensively high price of admission itself.

It s hard to put into words what Driftwood has meant to me. I tried my second attempt at sobriety and chose to go to Driftwood this time. It was the best decision I ve made in my life, next to deciding to get sober from alcohol. The care you receive is amazing. Psych care, counseling, addiction education, life skills, community, etc.I was provided with the tools to understand my disease, understand my mind and how to use them to live a healthy life in sobriety. My wife and family were able to better understand as well. The experience, care and community is what made me decide to go back when I had a relapse. And felt welcomed and encouraged when I did so. The life long friends and support I have from clients/alumni and driftwood staff is something I wouldn t have ever imagined to happen.I hope I can one day help give back to Driftwood and someone else struggling. 1000% recommend Driftwood

Coming to Driftwood wasn't initially what I wanted to do. I was coming from a primary inpatient facility and choose Driftwood as my aftercare (mainly their Riverside / Community Reintegration Program). But I'm glad I did! Not only was I able to do a deeper dive in a therapy setting on the core issues I had at the root of my disease, but I was also able to come to fully embrace what "fellowship" meant. Driftwood's facilities and staff made it open and welcoming to be "me". Riverside and it's unique approach to living life "anew" was well worth the time I spent. If you're considering treatment for a loved one or for yourself, Driftwood is the place. Jacob and the clinical team are the best, not to mention the entire Client Care Coordination team are top notch. And this isn't just a one-stop and you're done, "so long Driftwood" treatment experience. They truly care! Their approach to maintaining relationships with Alumni of the program is remarkable. HUGE and resounding thank you and shout out to Mason for making an above and beyond effort to keep relationships and communication open for those of us Alumni! And if rock climbing or ropes courses are your thing, talk to Connie and Nick!
