About The Canyon at Santa Monica

The Canyon at Santa Monica is located in Los Angeles, California. They exist to help you overcome alcohol, opiate and other drug addictions. This facility also addresses dual diagnosis conditions. This makes them ideal for simultaneously treating addiction and mental health challenges. Their treatment options include partial hospitalization and an intensive outpatient program. Specialized programs are available for top professionals affected by substance use disorder. All their programs prioritize quality and individualized care tailored to your core needs. It’s also great that they are Joint Commission accredited as it validates their commitment to providing the highest standards of care.

In partial hospitalization you participate in therapeutic sessions during the day and return home at night. It is more structured and involves more time commitment than intensive outpatient care. That makes it more appealing if you require more support and guidance in your recovery journey. Intensive outpatient care is more flexible and can accommodate your daily schedule better. Both programs are designed to provide you the support and therapy necessary for lasting recovery.

This is achieved through group and individual therapy sessions. Their evidence based approach involves various therapeutic practices like cognitive behavioral therapy, EMDR and motivational interviewing. These help you address the causes of your addiction and develop coping and relapse prevention strategies. Treatment also incorporates ‘whole person’ activities like meditation, yoga and nutrition counseling. This boosts mental awareness and wellbeing, which is great for your recovery.

They also offer medication assisted treatment. This recovery solution uses FDA approved medicine and counseling to treat addiction. Additionally, the program integrates various 12 Step programs. This guides you through a structured recovery process focusing on personal growth, accountability and peer support.

You’ll also benefit from their addiction education sessions and aftercare services. The latter may involve referral to support groups like AA or NA for ongoing support. You can also join their alumni network, which will make it easier for you to access community resources and receive ongoing care. Comments from past clients reflect an overwhelmingly positive experience and exceptional quality of care.

INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE.I cannot say enough great things about this facility, from the talented staff/therapists and overall quality of life at The Canyon. The level of care and attention to detail they take with each patients treatment plan was something special to be apart of. I had never sought treatment before but with the option to do an IOP after work on weeknights I didn't have an excuse not to do this and save myself. During my time at The Canyon a tight bond was made with my fellow patients and the staff as they do weekly huddles to ensure each patient gets just as much attention / care as the next. I graduated on September 5th 2024. Today i am 105 days sober and will continue to live the best life I can for myself my friends and my family. I could not have done it without this outstanding facility, team and co patients. If you're at the point where you're feeling hopeless and you're not enough just remember you are enough and give them a call.

This wasn t my first time in treatment but this was, hands down, the most profound and effective. I learned skills related to DBT, ACT. I gained access to EMDR treatment for my trauma. I learned eastern philosophical concepts that helped with my emotional regulation and distress tolerance. I came to understand how the 12 steps function, with great clarity. The community I built there is priceless. And the time spent with my one on one therapist was life changing. Even the structure alone made a huge difference. I will forever hold The Canyon near and dear to my heart. I would (and have) recommended to anyone. I can t express my gratitude to the staff enough. I love The Canyon.

Accepted Insurance

The Canyon at Santa Monica works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Rehab aftercare programs offer clients in addiction recovery a robust continuum of care after clients have completed active treatment. These services address recovery as a life-long process and are designed to evolve with clients' changing needs. Clients may partner with their case managers and/or addiction recovery team to identify the rehab aftercare services that are right for them. They may receive career counseling, housing assistance, peer coaching, 12 step program induction, among many other services.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
Intervention Services helps family or friends of addicts stage an intervention, which is a meeting in which loved ones share their concerns and attempt to get an addict into treatment. Professional intervention specialists can help loved ones organize, gather, and communicate with an addict. They can guide intervention participants in describing the damage the addict’s behavior is causing and that outside help is necessary to address the addiction. The ideal outcome of an intervention is for the addict to go to rehab and get the help they need. Their five step intervention method provides a proven protocol of education, action and healing in a respectful and non-confrontational manner. They work with their patients and their families to ensure that they find the right interventionist and that there is total understanding of the treatment process.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
When addicted, quitting your drug of choice suddenly can be dangerous. That's why experts agree a medically assisted detox is the safest way to remove addictive substances from the body. Usually done in an inpatient setting, your vitals signs and overall well being are consistently monitored and rechecked in order to keep you safe and ensure the detox is successful.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse treatment center has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track. When co-occurring addiction and mental health issues are treated concurrently, individuals are much more likely to achieve and maintain a healthy, balanced lifestyle. They offer integrated treatment using evidence-based methods for the best chance of long-term success in recovery.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

During group therapy, men and women learn to express their emotions openly in a non judgmental setting. This helps you process your feelings and reduces feelings of social isolation that are often associated with addiction.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

The goal of nicotine replacement therapy in California is to mitigate the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. It cuts down on your cravings by supplying a small dose of nicotine without exposing your body to the toxins of cigarette smoke.

Yes, I must say The Canyon saved my life on all levels of life. I was broken when I arrived and I had lost all hope that I could overcome my addictions. But today I must say through the help of all the facilitators at The Canyon I now have hope, drive, and ambition. I had been using for almost 27 years of my life because I went through a traumatic event at the age of 14. Antonio definitely gave me a winner's mindset and Michaelis showed me multiple times until it clicked in my foggy brain how I had the allergy to drugs and alcohol so that I wouldn't ever believe the "LIE" that I can use or drink again. Also, I had the best therapy ever with Francesca where I could be vulnerable week after week until I finally just knew that it's possible now I know that it's possible for me to be able to stay SOBER for life. They have so much of a variety I can't name them all but all the facilitators helped me reshape and mold my life into what it's supposed to be. Also just so you know I'm 41 years old and this is my first treatment center I been in besides detox for 45 days so I never had the opportunity until I landed at the Canyon. So if you want to be the real you and live a life of "GREATNESS" and "SOBRIETY" give the Canyon a call they are performing miracles in the SOBRIETY side of life.

The Canyon not only saved my life but changed it for the better in all aspects. I am beyond grateful for my life's newfound ideology and path that was learned while at The Canyon.I would like to thank ALL the staff and facilitators for holding my hand through this life changing process. Antonio, who from the first call was such a guide and hero to me; which continued through graduation really making this experience comfortable. Special thanks to Michaelis, Lee, Honey, Francesca and Kelani for changing my perspective on life!Side note, this was my first program, figured give it a shot, what do I have to lose...still sober but more importantly, I am happy with life again.

(3days) I have been highly surprised with the professionalism of the facility. It has only been 3 days. However, I will make a other post as I progress thru the process.(After 90 days)I wrote a review at the beginning of the program and here is my summation. Yes this is a long one. Wouldn't you want to know what you are about to embark upon?I am here to let you know. This was the best life changing decision ever!!!Treatment: Medical, psychiatric, and/or emotional care given to a patient for an illness or injury. This is the definition when you google the word "treatment."Addiction is an illness...I spent 14 days of my life in a detox center in Riverdale, Ga. It was not the most favorable of experiences. Of course, having had that as my first experience ever in life dealing with detoxifying my body from alcohol abuse, I was extremely nervous about my next steps. However, the phrase "people, places, and things" saved me and had me look into The Canyon in Santa Monica, Ca. I was suppose to do a PHP program in Dunwoody, Ga, however they referred me to The Canyon across the nation. I texted Antonio, and asked him if he could chat. We set a time and I called him. I explained to him that I had a bad experience in Atlanta and I was curious about his program. He gave me the overview of what to expect and then he asked me a serious question. "Are you ready to make a change?" To which I had to ask myself, "am I ready?" Of course I said yes, and came on out to Santa Monica, Ca.Come to find out, I was not ready. I was not prepared for that type of care and attentiveness to my recovery and my treatment. It was more than a notion. Together with my therapist we worked out my exact treatment plan and I let her and Antonio know that anything less than perfection would not be acceptable on my side or their's. After setting up that plan with my amazing therapist Franchesca, we were off and running. Yes there were adjustments made as I went through the program, because I am not perfect. However, that is what I strive to be. As a fell on my face, she picked me up, dusted me off, and got me back on the right path. I learned that it is super important to not feel judged when you are trying to better yourself.Uber Eats is the food menu. You will be fed well daily, so you will always be satiated. The classes are in-depth with knowledge to help you with coping skills. The instructors are very understanding and put you in real life situations to help you make wiser choices for your future. We even have improv classes which helps you break out of your addictive mindset and helps you communicate with others. There are men's and woman's groups held separately from each other to give you the opportunity to talk freely within your own gender. I will remind you again, this goes on with ZERO judgement about you or your past.EMDR, TPS, ACT, CBT are all part of your classes and therapy options. The community of people that surrounds you are super supportive even when you are going through the darkest times, they always will have your back. Did I mention Alumni classes? People who have finished the program come back and discuss their own personal experiences to remind you of the journey you are on.I was super skeptical going into this. I learned to open my mind and I was also challenged to open my heart(FRANCHESCA ). Sometimes people or companies have to SELL you on what they can do for you. I never had to be sold on ANYTHING, because they put my TREATMENT FIRST!
