About Sharp McDonald Center

The Sharp McDonald Center is a substance use disorder treatment center located in San Diego, California. They offer inpatient and outpatient hospital-based treatment consisting of three phases of personalized treatment: admission and detox, rehabilitation, and continuing care. Inpatient clients are housed in a home-away-from-home in the facility with 16 beds, comfortably furnished, and provides plenty of outside space for calm reflection.

The type of treatment clients can expect at the Sharp McDonald Center includes case management, education about the nature of addiction and recovery, group and individual therapy, recreational groups, assertiveness training, and relapse prevention. They also provide medication-assisted treatment. This is where, under supervision, clients are prescribed medication to keep cravings at bay and/or manage mental health symptoms, which helps them engage fully with evidence-based treatments.

These evidence-based treatments include various therapy approaches such as trauma-focused therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and dialectical behavioral therapy.

One of the great things about the Sharp McDonald Center is its Continuing Care program. To ensure the best chance of long-term sobriety, clients receive ongoing support after rehabilitation at no extra cost. The program helps clients solve issues to make the necessary transitions to reintegrate into everyday life, at work, at home, and in the community. Plus, weekly group sessions and alumni support help clients spot relapse signs and achieve their recovery goals.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) support a client's sustained sobriety as they exit detox or step down from an inpatient program. IOPs are also designed for clients who are at an elevated risk of relapse. Intensive outpatient treatment typically requires clients to engage in a minimum of nine hours of therapy per week, but clients may receive up to 20 therapeutic hours weekly. IOP treatment modalities often combine psychotherapy, recovery-focused life skills training, and medication assisted treatment (MAT).

aftercare iconAftercare

Rehab aftercare programs offer clients in addiction recovery a robust continuum of care after clients have completed active treatment. These services address recovery as a life-long process and are designed to evolve with clients' changing needs. Clients may partner with their case managers and/or addiction recovery team to identify the rehab aftercare services that are right for them. They may receive career counseling, housing assistance, peer coaching, 12 step program induction, among many other services.

12-step icon12-Step

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

sober-living iconSober Living Homes

Sober living homes in California offers an intermediate sober environment that has less structure than inpatient rehab but more than typical home environments. This makes it a good option for those who have concerns about transitioning back to the "real world" after treatment. Residents can typically live at the halfway house as long as they want, if they are willing to follow house rules. These may include a curfew, chores, and maintaining a job.

heart-hands iconIntervention Services

When an individual is in denial about their substance use disorder, their loved ones may organize a drug intervention in California. This effort involves gently but assertively confronting the individual about their substance use and sharing how it has affected those who care about them. A professional interventionist may also attend this gathering. Their expertise with intervention services can prove helpful in guiding the conversation to a positive result.

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

Commonly known as "day treatment," a partial hospitalization program (PHP) is an intensive form of outpatient treatment where clients meet during the day and return home in the evening. PHP treatment doesn't require 24-hour care and often serves as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization or a step-down after a residential program. With PHP treatment, you can receive daily support for 6 to 8 hours which includes evidence-based therapies and medication management. The cost of PHP treatment typically varies but averages 90 days.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Heart icon Treatment

alcohol iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

drugs iconDrug Addiction

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

opium iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Hand holding medical sign icon Clinical Services

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy is a structured approach used by therapists to help you heal from a past traumatic event. Your therapist works with you to identify the traumatic memory and process the information so you experience emotional healing and a sense of safety and stability.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation. The family programs are available with all levels of care and are open-ended multiple family therapy groups for both the patient and family members. Participants address early recovery issues, examine significant relationship dysfunctions and develop support networks for the entire family. All family members and patients are encouraged to attend both during and after the individual's treatment process.

life-skills iconLife Skills

While in rehab treatment, you may work on developing various life skills to help you in long term recovery. These may include resilience, interpersonal skills, and self awareness. The focus will be on developing healthy habits for self care and relationships so you have the skills you need to manage day to day life.

recreational-therapy iconRecreational Therapy

Recreational therapy is included in alcohol and drug addiction treatment to focus on engaging you in healthy activities that reduce your cravings and improve your overall health and well being. When you participate in group sports, art, or nature walks, you develop new interests and find a meaningful way to spend your time and reduce your cravings.

art-brush iconCreative Arts Therapy

I believe most of the staff have good intentions. The therapist were available if you need any resources. It was hard to get one on one care. Most of the nurses were courteous. I use that very loosely. The two ladies overnight were amazing. The black guy in the evening should pick a new line of work. He would deny patients medicine, talk at them very snarling, wouldn't listen, and seems like an unhappy person. My mood would instantly drop the days that he worked. They have security at night. They were ok. It was a big guy with glasses that told bad dad jokes. It was hard to figure out if he really cared or was just asking questions because it was apart of his job.

from a clinical/medical standpoint they are excellent but that's just dealing with doctors which you only see once in a blue moon because they are just there to let you know about your lab results and gauge your overall health. It's a very quick visit but an informative one...However I am sorry to say that nearly every other aspect of this facility and the program as a whole is not what it should be, and worse, I'm not certain they could be what they need to be.. the therapists are completely impotent which is disheartening, and they can be rude for failing to shelve their personal issues while working which is incredibly unprofessional. I've never experienced such mediocrity for a place that should expect a higher standard for itself. The accommodations are clean but very depressing. The beds are actually not beds, they are a thin hard plastic mattress and same for the pillows. The group sessions are forgettable. They accomplish nothing. The most important issue of all is that the facility and the people/therapists who work there do not foster an environment of real trust so a healing process can take place. Would never recommend this place to anyone. it's just not what you would expect from Sharp... my insuramce covered most of it but im still paying off my portion and it kills me to have to pay anything for this pathetic rehab that is not worth the money regardless of how much your insurane will cover

I was referred here by my primary physician, a Sharp doctor, who suggested I explore outpatient services. I called and answered a few questions, then was called by an admittance administrator who said they would only admit me as an inpatient. Despite both my own and physician's feelings that felt I would be fine with outpatient services, this facility denied me access based on a single phone call... no offer to meet in person, explore my situation, etc. Clearly they were more interested in the revenue from a mutli-week stay. Thankfully I didn't enroll and with the help of my physician, no longer find the need to explore any options. Before wasting many thousands of dollars at this facility, be sure to explore others who actually care more about people than profit.
