About First Steps Recovery

First Steps Recovery is a comprehensive drug and alcohol detox and rehab facility in Clovis, California. They offer help for addiction and co-occurring disorders through their residential, partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient (IOP) programs. They accept insurance from most major providers including TRICARE for the military and veterans.

The facility is licensed and accredited by The Joint Commission. They use evidence-based as well as experiential and holistic therapies. The program starts with medical detox. This is the process where you rid your body of the harmful substances you’ve been using. They use medications during detox if necessary to help you get safely through the hardest withdrawal symptoms.

After detox, you can go into the residential treatment program. You’ll live in a structured environment with supervision around the clock. You’ll have access to therapy to address your substance use and any co-occurring disorders you may have. Co-occurring (dual diagnosis) disorders are things like depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. It’s important to treat your underlying mental health issues because those issues often drive substance use.

During residential treatment, you’ll have individual and group therapy, including trauma-informed therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), narrative therapy and experiential therapy.

You’ll have a chance to exercise, do yoga and engage in equine therapy. They offer many other types of therapy that you may or may not use depending on your unique situation. If appropriate, your family may also be involved in some of your therapy. You’ll work on aftercare planning to continue your sober journey after you finish the program.

There’s also a PHP that’s a step down from inpatient care. Some patients go from the inpatient program to the PHP because it’s an intensive, structured program but you can live at home. You can also start in the PHP if you don’t need the full residential program. You’ll receive many of the same treatments you get in the inpatient program.

The center offers an IOP too. The IOP offers the most flexibility so you can attend daily therapy but still meet family and work commitments. You’ll have a supportive community and individualized treatment. The IOP also offers many other therapies, such as equine, art, and meditation.

When I joined the First Steps recovery program, I hadn t really joined it yet. Detox, rehab, and a few months off from drinking was all I needed. Trust me, it s a hell of a job to conduct explanatory, educational, and persuasive work among me.But, FSR specialists are very competent, professional, passionate about their work and patient. They really care.I m really grateful to all the staff, med technicians and the chef, to my counselor Eric, my case manager Nicole, my therapist Heather, my instructors Juan, Enrique, Luis (Richard, I thought), and of course to the charming Rose. They made me feel at the Oak House right at home. Sometimes even too much, I guess.Rose didn't like my home robe. I m sorry, Rose. And also, I want to apologize that when Rose asked us to tell something interesting about ourselves, I got lost and said that I had nothing. Please understand my confusion when my other brothers in recovery could tell you what they collected and how many pieces of stuff they had already collected. Of course, I could have and should have created the story about it for at least not being blank and unnecessary. That s wrong keep myself unnoticeable, known for nobody, when even restroom light sensors don t recognize me. Well, it s time to tell a little bit of who I am.I m Sergey, I m 55. My long and difficult life path obviously hasn t been always fun. Successes and failures, military and prison. As many divorces, as there were marriages. Co-authorship in the creation of a teaching aid for university programs. Immigration. Children and grandchildren. Hard work and dedication, success in studies and work, career advancement and work. Depression, anxiety and alcohol. Detox, rehab and recovery, new life experiences and positive thoughts of the future. And, the most important and interesting thing about me is, looking back on my life, I would certainly say I am a stamp collector. Sad, isn t it?It s enough about me.Now I am still with FSR, outpatient therapy. I needed a couple of days to adjust and then I started working hard on the next step in my recovery.I am really thankful for helping me with that to my case manager Gwen, to my therapist Jimmy, and to all the ladies instructors, and to the gentleman Matt. And of course, I want to apologize to everyone about my flaws. They have made me unpopular with the elders my entire life. I m one of those inappropriate persons, I know that.Anyway, not mentioned Abbey, Alex, Amanda (very kind lady, was mad at me for a while), Coleen, Jen (lovable though), Nia (calm and wise), and Aleecia (mad at me, so far).Kristen and her Cooper.Ray the manager and Tyler the nurse. Thanks to all the staff from Sequoia and Oak Houses, to Manzanita for the swimming pool, to all the drivers. However, here s the thing. As I ve already mentioned, I wasn t going to even consider quitting the alcohol for good. And now, three months later I am not only going to work on staying sober forever, but also I decided to move to Fresno from Bay Area due to FSR after care program, and to my sober friends and surroundings are here.I am really happy to realize that I am a completely different person compared to myself before. Even my life, which was priceless because I wouldn t give a cent for it, and I really thought that my life absolutely went to its logical end. There was no point for me to continue my life. And now, I think that my life is as priceless as any other person s life. Still sounds weird to me.Thus, the recovery provided by FSR is not only about the quitting substances, the recovery process is about changing your perspective on life and that is how you can get happy without any drugs and alcohol. Of course, there are some other steps to keep working on, and it s a hell of a challenge but it makes a lot of sense. And, FSR gives us the seeds and helps them sprout so that later we can enjoy the fruit. Thanks to all of FSR team for the help and support in getting us through these first steps of the recovery process. It was completely unexpected to me, but it worked.

Accepted Insurance

First Steps Recovery works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Clients receiving treatment at an outpatient rehab typically do not require hospitalization or intensive supervision and support. Outpatient addiction counseling and recovery education are often offered during the morning, evening, night, and weekend, allowing clients to tailor treatment to their own schedule. Partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient (IOP) programs are the most time-intensive and are designed for clients who are at an increased relapse risk and/or who need more robust therapeutic support.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) support a client's sustained sobriety as they exit detox or step down from an inpatient program. IOPs are also designed for clients who are at an elevated risk of relapse. Intensive outpatient treatment typically requires clients to engage in a minimum of nine hours of therapy per week, but clients may receive up to 20 therapeutic hours weekly. IOP treatment modalities often combine psychotherapy, recovery-focused life skills training, and medication assisted treatment (MAT).
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Rehab aftercare programs offer clients in addiction recovery a robust continuum of care after clients have completed active treatment. These services address recovery as a life-long process and are designed to evolve with clients' changing needs. Clients may partner with their case managers and/or addiction recovery team to identify the rehab aftercare services that are right for them. They may receive career counseling, housing assistance, peer coaching, 12 step program induction, among many other services.
12-step icon12-Step
Participants engaged in 12 step programs receive intensive peer coaching (sponsorship) and community support. Spiritual development as a means of achieving psychological and emotional healing and growth is the cornerstone of 12 step recovery, but religious affiliations are not required. Meetings are free, anonymous, and open to the public, though specialized formats are available, including groups for seniors, teens, and family members. Evening, night, and day meetings are conducted year-round in most communities.
sober-living iconSober Living Homes
Sober living acts as a segue into real life after treatment. They are there to provide additional support to people who may be in a new city or state, or people who are just not yet comfortable living on their own in sobriety. Many sober living houses have rules and regulations that must be followed by their residents and often times these rules can help newly sober people establish healthy routines that nurture their recovery.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
When an individual is in denial about their substance use disorder, their loved ones may organize a drug intervention in California. This effort involves gently but assertively confronting the individual about their substance use and sharing how it has affected those who care about them. A professional interventionist may also attend this gathering. Their expertise with intervention services can prove helpful in guiding the conversation to a positive result.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
Commonly known as "day treatment," a partial hospitalization program (PHP) is an intensive form of outpatient treatment where clients meet during the day and return home in the evening. PHP treatment doesn't require 24-hour care and often serves as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization or a step-down after a residential program. With PHP treatment, you can receive daily support for 6 to 8 hours which includes evidence-based therapies and medication management. The cost of PHP treatment typically varies but averages 90 days.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
During the first phase of recovery – detox – it is crucial to have 24-hour clinical care in California. This care provides constant monitoring in order to ensure your safely and comfort as you progress through the withdrawal process for drug or alcohol addiction. Licensed professionals prescribe medications to treat withdrawal symptoms and provide frequent monitoring to ensure your safely as addictive toxins leave your system.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
When addicted, quitting your drug of choice suddenly can be dangerous. That's why experts agree a medically assisted detox is the safest way to remove addictive substances from the body. Usually done in an inpatient setting, your vitals signs and overall well being are consistently monitored and rechecked in order to keep you safe and ensure the detox is successful.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive behavioral therapy in California is a method that therapists often use for the effective treatment of substance use disorders. It is based on the principle that substance abuse stems from unhelpful ways of thinking and patterns of behavior, which can be changed by helping the individual learn better ways of coping.

While participating in dialectical behavior therapy in California, you'll focus on four key areas of skill development: mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance. Treatment includes weekly individual and group sessions.

Equine therapy, aka equine-assisted therapy (EAT), is a form of experiential therapy that involves interactions and activities with horses. It does not necessarily involve riding horses, but all activities related to horses, such as feeding, grooming, haltering and leading them. A mental health professional frequently oversees the activities (often in conjunction with a horse professional), and helps patients process their thoughts, feelings, and behavior patterns during and/or after the interaction.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy is a structured approach used by therapists to help you heal from a past traumatic event. Your therapist works with you to identify the traumatic memory and process the information so you experience emotional healing and a sense of safety and stability.

eye-movement iconEye Movement Desensitization And Reprocessing

Family therapy offers a platform for members to have an open dialogue about the challenges that addiction has placed on the family unit. Through guided sessions, therapists can help families develop healthy communication skills and address unresolved issues. By working together toward a common goal, they help to support their loved one's sobriety.

While in rehab treatment, you may work on developing various life skills to help you in long term recovery. These may include resilience, interpersonal skills, and self awareness. The focus will be on developing healthy habits for self care and relationships so you have the skills you need to manage day to day life.

Recreational therapy is included in alcohol and drug addiction treatment to focus on engaging you in healthy activities that reduce your cravings and improve your overall health and well being. When you participate in group sports, art, or nature walks, you develop new interests and find a meaningful way to spend your time and reduce your cravings.

Substances can prevent the absorption of nutrients and cause damage to your body's systems. Nutrition therapy in California addresses the deficiencies in vitamins and minerals that are caused by substance abuse.

Art therapy is more than tossing paint on a canvas or doodling random shapes. Art therapy programs allow clients to use their creativity and imagination to make create art that expresses what they truly feel in a healthy and productive way. Through art, clients are able to expand the ways they communication in order to help convey what they truly are thinking and feeling in the present. Art therapy programs for addiction in clovis are especially helpful for those people who have underlying psychological issues such as depression, anxiety and PTSD. A great benefit of art therapy in drug treatment it that it allows an individual total freedom of self‐expression and is a more open form of communication in comparison to traditional talk therapy methods.

The use of experiential therapy can be helpful for the treatment of behavioral disorders, including drug and alcohol addiction. This method teaches you how to release negative emotions and cope with pain from the past. Activities such as art, music, and animal care are used to facilitate this process.

My thoughts in a nutshellFirst Steps ain t a handout; it s a mirror and a grind,Where you face the demons you ve been ducking in your mind. They don t sugarcoat the process or dress it up sweet,It s raw, it s work, and it drags you to your feet. The staff here? Solid. They don t fake what they do,They ve walked the road, they ve bled for the view. You can feel it in the walls, hear it in the tone This is the place where you learn you re not alone. But if we re talking who hits different, Amanda s the name,She s not here for the glory, not playing some game. She steps in like a truth bomb, no fluff, no spin,Her honesty cuts deep, like she s peeling your skin. Her past is heavy, yeah, she ll lay it all bare,Not for sympathy, but so you know she s been there. She gets it. The cravings, the chaos, the shame,She s lived it, survived it, now she s flipping the game.Amanda doesn t preach; she lays it out straight,Suggestions that stick, not just talk on a plate. Try this, try that and I ll be real, I did,Every one of her calls hit harder than I hid.Now I m stacking wins, one day at a time,Using tools she handed me to rebuild what s mine.Amanda s not the program, but she s First Steps in flesh,The grit, the guts, the rebuild from the mess.So yeah, this place works if you re ready to heal,And Amanda s the proof that it s all real deal.First Steps is the house, but she s the loudest voice Helping you see recovery s a choice. But Amanda s just one in a team that s legit,First Steps is a machine, and every part fits. From the groups to the guidance, the structure, the care,I ve been lucky to land in a program this rare.It s not just talk it s a place built to last,Helping you stand while shaking your past. This crew is the real deal, no fake, no fluff,They light a fire when the road gets rough.

I ve been doing any and all drugs since the age of 12, I m now 63. I got addicted to Meth in 2016- 2019 I got clean and sober for 5 1/2 years and I had a relapse in August of this year. I thought before I used I d only do it for a couple of 3-4 days. By about day 10 I knew I was in trouble. My wife found about my addiction at first I thought no need for rehab but as I soon discovered I was in desperate need of a recovery center. We looked around Fresno Clovis and we really liked what First Steps had to offer. I started a week after we toured the recovery center. I felt so at home the clients were all very helpful and friendly. The staff was like part of my extended family they truly cared about me. I came there wanting to know why I relapsed I needed to know what made me an addict tic I was serious about my recovery. Groups were instructed by staff most of all who were ex addicts, Jen was the only normy but she was full of wisdom from personal experiences she had so much to offer. My case worker Alex was always there to support me with whatever questions I had. I had been kinda pruning back my addiction when it would show itself now I no longer wanted to just trim back my disease I wanted to take a Ax and get down deep into my traumatic childhood, the root of the disease and start chopping away at it. I met with Abby my Therapist we made some Amazing progress and dug deep into my past trauma as a 9 year old little boy, it hit me like a ton of bricks that s why I wore all kinds of masks and used drugs to take away all the pain, I know that day with her would change my life forever. Dealing with my past has set me free today. I m still chopping at the roots of my addiction, new issues come up but with the tools that FSR gave me and taught me how to use them I m able to have victory over my past hurts. All the Therapist Aleecia really clicked with me our paths through life had a lot of the same issues, her sobriety showed me there was and is hope. Can t say enough about the counselors, therapists and case managers all helped me to understand my addiction and why I used. I now no longer put on masks when uncomfortable situations arise I m able to work them out thanks once again to the Tools they taught me how and when to use them. When k was having a hard day it seemed like Cooper the FSR mascot was there to cheer me up Thanks little buddy. I would recommend to any fellow addict or alcoholic this recovery center First Steps Recovery changed my life. I have a future knowing I can keep my addiction at bay. I got what I truly needed in my life What makes me tic as a Addict.

I have had a long road through recovery and understanding what that means. I have been through FSR twice and the second time I came in there was no judgment. There was compassion and understanding. My caseworker ( Ray Stabenfeldt ), didn t just check my urine each week. He was invested in my journey of self discovery. The staff is a brigade of compassion, patience, and genuine care for me and the other clients. Colleen helped me make connections and see blind spots in my thinking. As my therapist she helped me to regulate my emotions and truly strategize my encounters through conflict.Kirsten is the glue of the organization and gave me hard truths that I need to hear. Her organization and smooth transition through turmoil allows me to focus on introspection.
