About Hartgrove Behavioral Health System

Hartgrove Behavioral Health System is a behavioral health treatment center on Roosevelt Road in Chicago, Illinois. The center has programs for people of all ages, including school age children, adolescents and adults. They have inpatient, outpatient, and partial hospitalization programs and offer treatment for mental health and substance use disorders (dual diagnosis).

The center has contractual relationships with more than 30 different insurance companies. They also take TRICARE and Medicare. They’ll work with your insurance company throughout the process to ensure you get the most out of your mental health coverage.

The Steps to Recovery Dual Diagnosis Program is an adult intensive outpatient program (IOP) for those 18 and up with substance use disorder and co-occurring mental health issues. The program provides medication assisted treatment (MAT) for alcohol and opioid addiction.

You’ll receive treatment from registered MISA (Mental Illness/Substance Abuse) counselors. You’ll learn about the impact of substance use on your mental and physical health, attend counseling and develop a readiness to change plan. You’ll learn how to regulate your mood and how to appropriately express your feelings

The inpatient services include recovery and crisis stabilization. If you’re in the crisis stabilization unit, you’ll be separated from those in the recovery unit. Crisis stabilization patients are given support for external behaviors such as psychosis and aggression. If you’re in the recovery unit, you’ll get help with internalized behaviors such as depression and anxiety.

In both units, you’ll get evidence based treatments with different therapy modalities as well as medication treatment if appropriate. Children and adolescents receive schooling through the Hartgrove Academy program.

ADD ON: I just talked to my social worker at Northwestern Chicago and once I told her I came here her jaw dropped. She told me if she knew she would've prevented me from coming here at all costs. Please don't let anyone come here! I was forced by the ER because I was starving myself from depression. I was never suicidal or aggressive. I stayed from 12/1 - 12/9. They're at fault for my lamotrigine withdrawal and never gave me all of my meds from their pharmacy even when I told them everything I take. My mom brought some nice warm pajama pants since it was going to be 10 but they didn't even give me those. There were only two shower times a day. I always wanted to shower in the morning but when I asked for my shower stuff they wouldn't bring it to me in time. I would be told to wait so when I asked later they would complain that I'm asking outside of schedule. The bathroom was right off of the door with only a curtain. When I would turn the shower on the shower and bathroom curtain would blow around. Anyone walking in the hall could easily see me naked. That made me feel so violated especially being a SA victim. They were 3 days late on my laundry so that stopped me from showering as well. I needed to be hydrated especially since I had diarrhea. When I asked for sport drinks or anything with electrolytes they said it was a luxury and they wouldn't order it. The dietitian came up to me and said he can only put in ensure orders. When I asked for one the charge nurse said the order wasn't in and it's only for weight gain but it looks like I don't need to gain any weight. I proved them wrong with my meal ticket and they finally gave me an ensure. One day I was nauseous and asked for meds but the nurse sat there and ignored me while on her cell phone. I told her I need it now or I'm going to be sick and she said "hold on I'm doing something." Don't get me started on how filthy that place was. The old guy cleaning would grab the day room garbage bin without gloves then touch everything else. Food or drinks would get spilled and it wouldn't get cleaned up until the next day. The mattress pads were lined with dirt, hair, food crumbs. There was an all around weird smell and sometimes urine stench. A psychotic patient snuck into my bathroom and stole my used hygiene product. When staff tried to take it from the patient the staff was slapped. The patient received a shot and it didn't help because the patient did it again. That same patient was allowed to randomly walk the halls at night making noises causing me to wake up. I saw a special needs patient sit in their own waste multiple times. They were placed back in the day room only to do it again. It broke my heart to watch them struggle. When I was being discharged I asked for help with my bags since I hurt my back a few weeks ago and the charge nurse rolled her eyes telling me to do it myself. Then a patient tried starting a fight with me and nobody did anything as if they thought I deserved it. As the charge nurse lead me out I started crying and she rudely told my mom "good luck... Mom." So unprofessional and childish! I was never insubordinate because that's not how I was raised. I was only firm on my rights as a patient. The staff never treated me with dignity or respect. I felt like I was in jail being punished for my mental health issues. Even if you behave and go to all groups you're still not treated right. This place should've helped me but instead caused me so much trauma.

So besides the fact they did literally nothing for me while I was there, they didn't put my wallet in with the rest of my belongings when I was discharged. Which had my id and cash in it, and I kind of need my ID for a lot of things. They said they'd mail it to me after I called them the next day, but 9 days later, my wallet still hasn't shown up at my house...

Accepted Insurance

Hartgrove Behavioral Health System works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) enable clients to receive high-level care while living at home. Clients may choose to enter IOP instead of enrolling in inpatient care post-detox or they may transition from an inpatient rehab into IOP. Intensive outpatient treatment involves multiple therapeutic sessions per week and includes a combination of psychotherapy and addiction and recovery education. Many programs also offer medication assisted treatment (MAT) and/or holistic therapies, such as acupuncture and massage.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
As a flexible option, a partial hospitalization program (PHP) is tailored for those who don't require 24-hour care. PHP treatment can include daily therapeutic sessions and services such as relapse prevention and medication management. Based on your needs, PHP treatment duration can average 90 days and require a minimum of 20 hours of commitment weekly. While a partial hospitalization program typically requires a commute, telehealth may be available. PHP treatment costs can vary but are often covered by most insurance.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
Addiction treatment often begins with 24-hour clinical care in Illinois. This supervised setting is the best environment for detox.where medical staff can provide 24/7 supervision and responsive care as your body is cleansed of addictive substances. Doctors may prescribe antagonist and partial agonist drugs to counteract the effects of drugs or alcohol, or they may slowly taper down dosages of substances to end physical dependence on the drug.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Motivational interviewing in Illinois is person centered and collaborative. This method allows the therapist to come alongside the client to address the issue of ambivalence toward change. By listening and reflecting, the therapist helps the client see the need for change and commit to making changes.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Life skills training in Illinois gives you the tools you need to meet daily demands. These fall into three main categories: personal skills, interpersonal skills, and cognitive skills. While in rehab, you'll work on each of these areas as part of your recovery treatment.

Recreational therapy in an addiction treatment program in Idaho helps you rediscover the joy and build healthy habits you can continue as you reenter the community. Activities can include gardening, yoga, and group games that all promote relaxation, improve mood, and encourage interaction and community building. These factors are crucial for sustaining long term recovery.

A therapist who specializes in creative arts therapy in Illinois helps you communicate your feelings through expressive activities such as painting, music, or acting. Skill in the art form is not required to benefit from this type of therapy.

This place is very unprofessional and unpleasant. They show no empathy towards the patient or the family what so ever. Don't come here, it's filled with neglect, lack of organization, and chaos.

0 rating PRISON!! At 46 years old, I was put in after an altercation with the law. They shot me up with meds and didn t realize I was there for 2 days. I was there for 18 days because I wouldn t sign the release form. I felt like a lab rat. The only way they would let you out is if would sign the release form and then you had to wait 5 days. In the 18 days I got punched by a guy that was in from jail that had someone with him 24-7 and they put him with all of us. After he hit me they gave me shots one was warm & the other was cold, this put me in a daze for 2 days. Then the guy came at me again & I defended myself and got another 2 shots but they didn t work the same because I didn t sleep after. I only saw my doctor weekly and they put me on ValproateBrand name: Depakote this is for seizures and Bipolar disorder. Which made me drool and act crazy. When I got out I was just as bad if not worse. I went to my general physician and she took me off of it and put me on Prozac. The only thing they were right about is I was bipolar. Two years later I went manic and got into trouble with the law again was in jail fir 47 days & lost my job. I was making 80k a year and if it wasn t for family I would have lost everything. When I was in jail the therapist put me on LamoTRLgine & in a week I started to feel better. The reviews that it felt prison are probably right (never been thank God). This was worse than the 47 days in jail for sure. The people that watched us were mostly ok but would turn on you in an instant. I got charged around $3600 dollars after insurance and wouldn t let me make payments. This was the worse experience of my life and wouldn t send a love one or advise anyone to go willingly. Please do your research before going to a facility like this!!!!! I only put one star because it wouldn t let me post without it.

i was a patient here and let me just say disappointing. There was some great staff but others for sure favorited patients. I only stayed for 5 days, my shower was always cold, the place was nasty. If you did not wake up to the first morning call some of the staff would come and hit you upside the head or throw towels right at you. The patients there were better than the staff and i got a lot more from my roommate then i did with the staff. It was hard being away from home and that place is nasty.

Dr. Avilas and Peyton are both great! Here s an idea I think would really help out a lot for the future of this hospital: allow the men to groom properly with multi blade razors and *ESPECIALLY* hair clippers for their beards and excess hair. I know, I understand it s a long shot, but I would ve felt a lot more comfortable if I could ve groomed myself with hair clippers in private which creates a sense of cleanliness one won t get without trimming.
