About AKUA Mind & Body – Addiction Treatment Newport Beach

Akua Mind & Body is a dual diagnosis addiction treatment center in Newport Beach, California. Their services include detox, inpatient treatment, outpatient treatment, intensive outpatient treatment, partial hospitalization, medication assisted treatment and aftercare. They accept most private insurances, and they have numerous paths for insurance verification.

This center is extremely well equipped and versatile, especially when compared to other rehabs. They offer just about every type of treatment for substance abuse and mental health, from holistic therapies to complete medical care. More uniquely, they’re neither a hospital nor a rehab only. They’re a mental health treatment facility that treats depression, PTSD, anxiety, bipolar disorder and other issues in patients with or without substance use disorder.

This center also offers medication assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid addiction. MAT uses safer alternatives to addictive substances, in order to treat patients and wean them off of their addictive urges. Patients often have to get MAT at a specialized center and seek further addiction treatment elsewhere. Here, patients can get MAT and continue their treatment in one place.

This center is well liked by former patients, who cite a helpful staff, plenty of programs and lifelong support. Whether they’re seeking mental health treatment, addiction treatment, or both, prospective clients can get the help they need at this center.

Akua is where I got clean. The staff is very patient and kind. Because of this, I eventually came around to opening my mind more. I didn t want to participate in meetings and put minimal effort in facilitated group on the beginning. Over time, I felt more comfortable and staff shared their struggles and how they overcame it. I felt like I was able to face the destruction of my past and eventually did. The different groups that they provide help build a well rounded foundation and I thank them for the time clean I have today.Thank you Akua

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Per session payment lets you pay for each treatment at the time of service. You may also pay for a certain number of sessions up front and then pay for more if needed. This format allows you to tailor the financial investment to your specific needs and avoid having a large lump sum payment due at the end of the treatment program.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient programs are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs. The AKUA Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is perfect for people who have completed detoxification or primary care and are ready to return to work, school or other responsibilities, or who do not require a higher level of care. The AKUA Model of Care provides clinical treatment methods to help make positive changes in the patient's life. Individual counseling sessions, classes and group sessions led by their experienced team of licensed professional at our state-of-the-art facility in Newport Beach are available.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Rehab aftercare programs offer clients in addiction recovery a robust continuum of care after clients have completed active treatment. These services address recovery as a life-long process and are designed to evolve with clients' changing needs. Clients may partner with their case managers and/or addiction recovery team to identify the rehab aftercare services that are right for them. They may receive career counseling, housing assistance, peer coaching, 12 step program induction, among many other services.
12-step icon12-Step
Participants engaged in 12 step programs receive intensive peer coaching (sponsorship) and community support. Spiritual development as a means of achieving psychological and emotional healing and growth is the cornerstone of 12 step recovery, but religious affiliations are not required. Meetings are free, anonymous, and open to the public, though specialized formats are available, including groups for seniors, teens, and family members. Evening, night, and day meetings are conducted year-round in most communities.
sober-living iconSober Living Homes
Sober living homes in California offers an intermediate sober environment that has less structure than inpatient rehab but more than typical home environments. This makes it a good option for those who have concerns about transitioning back to the "real world" after treatment. Residents can typically live at the halfway house as long as they want, if they are willing to follow house rules. These may include a curfew, chores, and maintaining a job.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
When an individual is in denial about their substance use disorder, their loved ones may organize a drug intervention in California. This effort involves gently but assertively confronting the individual about their substance use and sharing how it has affected those who care about them. A professional interventionist may also attend this gathering. Their expertise with intervention services can prove helpful in guiding the conversation to a positive result.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
Commonly known as "day treatment," a partial hospitalization program (PHP) is an intensive form of outpatient treatment where clients meet during the day and return home in the evening. PHP treatment doesn't require 24-hour care and often serves as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization or a step-down after a residential program. With PHP treatment, you can receive daily support for 6 to 8 hours which includes evidence-based therapies and medication management. The cost of PHP treatment typically varies but averages 90 days.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
During the first phase of recovery – detox – it is crucial to have 24-hour clinical care in California. This care provides constant monitoring in order to ensure your safely and comfort as you progress through the withdrawal process for drug or alcohol addiction. Licensed professionals prescribe medications to treat withdrawal symptoms and provide frequent monitoring to ensure your safely as addictive toxins leave your system.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
adult-program thumbnail image

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
child-program thumbnail image
Child Program
The providers who specialize in the children's rehab space understand the specialized needs that this population faces. School-based and social services such as tutoring and family counseling are often central to treatment. Child programs may also address the needs of youth experiencing substance abuse in the home, including a parent's or sibling's addiction.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive behavioral therapy in California is a method that therapists often use for the effective treatment of substance use disorders. It is based on the principle that substance abuse stems from unhelpful ways of thinking and patterns of behavior, which can be changed by helping the individual learn better ways of coping.

While participating in dialectical behavior therapy in California, you'll focus on four key areas of skill development: mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance. Treatment includes weekly individual and group sessions.

Exposure to traumatic experiences, especially those occurring in childhood, has been strongly linked to substance use disorders. Studies suggest that early traumatic experiences may increase risk of substance use disorders because of attempts to self-medicate mood symptoms associated with a maladaptive biological stress response. At AKUA, clients will receive two one-hour groups weekly with a highly-trained trauma specialist, in which they will learn about how trauma affects the psyche. Clients will learn how to identify and manage symptoms related to traumatic experience, rather that turning to drugs and alcohol.

At AKUA, they are committed to creating a strong alliance between therapist and client to promote healing and growth of the mind, body, and spirit. Clients will receive one 50-minute session weekly with a registered Marriage and Family Therapist Intern to process individual issues. AKUA’s therapists utilize a holistic, non-judgmental approach that honors each individual’s unique strengths and potential for growth. They are trained in the psychodynamic approach, which is highly effective for examining the underlying causes of substance abuse. The goals of psychodynamic therapy are to increase the client’s self-awareness and understanding of the influence of the past on present behavior. A psychodynamic approach enables the client to examine unresolved conflicts and symptoms that arise from past dysfunctional relationships and manifest themselves in the need and desire to abuse substances.

For clients who are struggling with ambivalence toward change, motivational interviewing in California can help strengthen their commitment to change. Using a conversational method, the therapist helps you explore your motivations and empowers you to make the changes you desire.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Interpersonal relationships with spouses, partners, close friends and family, can often be a primary trigger for many individuals struggling with dependence on substances. While these relationships can often be a source of support for an individual in recovery, it is important to examine how these interactions can be unhealthy or holding one back from positive growth. It can also be a source of stress and anxiety, which often contributes to substance abuse. At AKUA, we provide one hour-long weekly group focused on relationships and family systems, which helps clients explore how their current behavior may be influenced by their family of origin. Clients will receive weekly meetings with a therapist to process any issues involving relationships or family. Clients will also have the opportunity to participate in couples and family therapy if it is clinically appropriate for their recovery.

Family therapy offers a platform for members to have an open dialogue about the challenges that addiction has placed on the family unit. Through guided sessions, therapists can help families develop healthy communication skills and address unresolved issues. By working together toward a common goal, they help to support their loved one's sobriety.

Most people can maintain sobriety while in treatment, but the real challenge is transitioning back into the real world. At AKUA, we focus on life skills that will empower clients to make healthy decisions for their new sober life. Clients will participate in weekly groups focusing on problem solving, self-awareness, effective communication, assertiveness, resilience, coping with stress, and building self-esteem. Clients will also receive support with resume building, job or school applications, interview skills, job search, and placement with volunteer opportunities. AKUA encourages clients to discover (or rediscover) their passion, and assists them in identifying attainable goals for the future. This can give clients a sense of purpose, empowerment, and motivation, which is essential for a healthy and fulfilling life in recovery.

Substances can prevent the absorption of nutrients and cause damage to your body's systems. Nutrition therapy in California addresses the deficiencies in vitamins and minerals that are caused by substance abuse.

The use of experiential therapy can be helpful for the treatment of behavioral disorders, including drug and alcohol addiction. This method teaches you how to release negative emotions and cope with pain from the past. Activities such as art, music, and animal care are used to facilitate this process.

Frankly, I do not want to give them even one star. !!!!My son was in this facility about 1.5 months ago. When he was admitted, I asked the staff a few times not to change the current medication since the medication was helpful a lot for my son. But they changed the medication, cutting off the old one and replaced with the new one ( I had informed that the new one did not help him before). After several days after they changed the med. my son's symptoms got worse and he was sent to the hospital. One week later, he went back to the Akua again, but he was sent to the hospital again since his symptom remained worse than before. And Akua refused to take him back when he was about to be discharged. I think they are so irresponsible, they just changed the medication ignoring my opinion even if I had asked not to change it a few times. My son is still struggling with much worse symptoms than being admitted in Akua. Now I regretted so much I had sent him there.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The staff was very knowledgeable, caring and accommodating through my early recovery efforts! Plenty of time is made to provide access to the gym, AA/NA meetings, healthy and delicious food, therapy, group sessions, down time and yoga to name a few of the highlights. I had my reservations before enrolling with Akua but by the end of my month-long time there I was sad to have to leave, knowing that I would miss all the staff and clients, as well as the tools they provided me to succeed within my next chapters of the recovery process. I plan to attend their Wednesday AA alumni meetings!

Words cannot expressed the love and respect I and many have for Akua and all of its staff members. I started my journey at residential there as angry as one individual could possibly be. Kristina my therapist brought me from metaphorical hell and back providing top tier grade A trauma and substance abuse therapy. I will forever be indebted to the superior help she has provided me giving me a new outlook and a chance at a happy fruitful life being clean and sober. My heart goes out to Robby, Brandon, Sam, Seth and many others for assisting me through my journey. Don t hesitate to call, you may save your or another s life by picking up the phone.

Can't make a phone call without someone listening in the room. If they think you are too emotional they will end the call! Pretty lame considering most people are emotional in rehab. Also they will read all your outgoing mail. The 3 letters I had sent and was supposedly approved were never received. .It honestly felt like jail. ( in jail you at least get visitors)They have a wave for logo but never went to the beach. Way too strict. Sarah is a cool counselor and her twin but alot of staff on power trip. I would look elsewhere for treatment. This place does not have respect for privacy.

319,324, & 328 university Dr Costa Mesa caIs for the men's residential housing area.During your stay, you can't have electric shavers of any sort (some how this is dangerous)No cell phones, limited home calls which are on speaker phone with staff in front of youFood and weekend activities are sporadic and often downgraded due to AKUA program budget or staff preference (sometimes just because of laziness)The 'therapy groups' during the week are very limitedOften consisting of the visiting 'therapist' having the group watch a 'TED' talk on YouTube followed by enough time for 2 to 3 of the 11 to 12 men being able to to briefly share in the group before group is overAKUA program had zero 'NA' books and zero 'narcotics anonymous' therapy groups at the facility even though over half the residents there are there due to narcotics related issues. The facility had a garden area: however even though family delivered plants for gardening (as this is a very beneficial activity for serenity and recovery... AKUA staff took their shovel home (supposedly for safety - however they had a large rake that could be used more of a weapon then a shovel could) and staff also denied client/mens resident from purchasing a small rounded garden shovel during a trip to target =Meaning AKUA makes it extremely hard to use the garden area. And AKUA also routinely purchases not enough milk for the residents - so eating breakfast cereal (the only breakfast they supply) is also difficult. Sometime not milk for up to 2 days. There are very few recreational activities to do daily except for a ping pong table and corn hole- no basketball hoop, no soccer net, no baseball catching mitts, etcOne of the very few activities that is provided is TVThere are two men's houses that have TVs so that is what mostly everyone has available to do is share the two TVs.Unfortunately: I do not think watching TV and half hearted therapists groups are worth the amount that this program costs. As I do not see these things a benefit to recovery
