About Turning Point Crisis Center

Turning Point Crisis Center is a short-term acute residential treatment facility located in Oceanside, California. It serves as an alternative to hospitalization for adults who are suffering an acute psychiatric crisis that is not manageable on an outpatient basis.

As a mental health crisis stabilization program that is licensed by the Department of Social Services, and certified by the Department of Healthcare Services, Turning Point is recognized as an evidence-based program that provides crisis intervention and residential treatment.

The residential program exists within a community-based, homelike environment, with a multidisciplinary team of counselors, clinicians, nurses, psychiatrists and peers who specialize in psychosocial rehabilitation. Men and women who need help with psychiatric conditions stay an average of length of nine days while receiving acute mental health support. A biopsychosocial approach to transformation is implemented, which helps connect participants with a variety of social service supports within their own community.

A typical day includes a community meeting, individual therapy, and the implementation of evidence-based therapies that help address mental health, substance abuse, and transition issues. Group counseling is provided twice a day. Meals serve as the time for connection to take place to avoid isolation and build a sense of community.

Mental health treatment focuses on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and other challenging psychiatric conditions. At Turning Point, those with dual diagnosis will receive treatment for the mental health conditions in conjunction with their substance use disorder. Psychiatrists will administer medications as needed.

Group therapy involves treatment through the process of connecting in a group setting to discuss and work through mental, emotional, and physical issues. There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more.

Turning Point helped me out in a big way. It was February, it was raining and cold. I was staring at a six-week waiting list to get into residential SUD treatment and being on the streets. Turning Point gave me shelter, food, counseling, my medication and a phone to use to call the rehab every day and move up the waiting list. They kept me until I got in to Pathfinders. Basically saved me.Anyone expecting more than that has unreasonable expectations and probably has some hard lessons in life ahead of them. Thank you, staff at Turning Point, for your valued role in saving my life

They are very caring at Turning Point making sure you have some place to go after your stay. The only thing that I didn't like was that for the two weeks I was there, the doctor only talked to me once. I wish I could have talked to him a second time to up my anti - depressant back to the amount I was on when I arrived, but he said he wasn't going to adjust my medications anymore. I still feel sorta out of it and not myself, but it was a great stay nonetheless and I do have a Dr's appt this week. Many thanks to Cary for watching out for me and making sure I had some place to go afterwards. They will also take you to Dr's appts, get your EBT card, and various other locales if need be after putting in a pass.Do watch out for things getting stolen. My brand new $9 bottle of men's body wash was stolen as were my SkullCandy earbuds. Not staff's fault at all, but just a warning to put things away and don't let them sit out where they're visible. We're all sick in our own way. Many thanks go out to David, Ivan and all the gals that work there. They treated me with respect and didn't look down upon me when I was in a rough spot.

So, I stayed here for a few weeks back in 2016, and they're really good, helpful people. They go above and beyond to get you the help you need, and I'm grateful that they were so patient with me.In February 2020 I ended up being sent her by a hospital I was in, and even though they couldn't take me in because the hospital neglected to tell them they were sending me, they let me stay in the lobby until someone came and picked me up. So I'm glad they're still good people.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Clients receiving treatment at an outpatient rehab typically do not require hospitalization or intensive supervision and support. Outpatient addiction counseling and recovery education are often offered during the morning, evening, night, and weekend, allowing clients to tailor treatment to their own schedule. Partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient (IOP) programs are the most time-intensive and are designed for clients who are at an increased relapse risk and/or who need more robust therapeutic support.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Rehab aftercare programs offer clients in addiction recovery a robust continuum of care after clients have completed active treatment. These services address recovery as a life-long process and are designed to evolve with clients' changing needs. Clients may partner with their case managers and/or addiction recovery team to identify the rehab aftercare services that are right for them. They may receive career counseling, housing assistance, peer coaching, 12 step program induction, among many other services.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
When an individual is in denial about their substance use disorder, their loved ones may organize a drug intervention in California. This effort involves gently but assertively confronting the individual about their substance use and sharing how it has affected those who care about them. A professional interventionist may also attend this gathering. Their expertise with intervention services can prove helpful in guiding the conversation to a positive result.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
During the first phase of recovery – detox – it is crucial to have 24-hour clinical care in California. This care provides constant monitoring in order to ensure your safely and comfort as you progress through the withdrawal process for drug or alcohol addiction. Licensed professionals prescribe medications to treat withdrawal symptoms and provide frequent monitoring to ensure your safely as addictive toxins leave your system.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Clinical Services

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

For clients who are struggling with ambivalence toward change, motivational interviewing in California can help strengthen their commitment to change. Using a conversational method, the therapist helps you explore your motivations and empowers you to make the changes you desire.

Trauma therapy is a structured approach used by therapists to help you heal from a past traumatic event. Your therapist works with you to identify the traumatic memory and process the information so you experience emotional healing and a sense of safety and stability.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

While in rehab treatment, you may work on developing various life skills to help you in long term recovery. These may include resilience, interpersonal skills, and self awareness. The focus will be on developing healthy habits for self care and relationships so you have the skills you need to manage day to day life.

Recreational therapy is included in alcohol and drug addiction treatment to focus on engaging you in healthy activities that reduce your cravings and improve your overall health and well being. When you participate in group sports, art, or nature walks, you develop new interests and find a meaningful way to spend your time and reduce your cravings.

After going through a severe bout with depression and substance use turning point welcomed me in for the 2nd time in a 12 month period. I left turning point 7 months ago and I ve been doing well ever since. The counselors especially Erica, Kirsten, Maria and another girl I forget her name we re very helpful. I stopped by the other day to thank them and let them know I was ok but it looks like they no longer work there. I hope the new staff is just as helpful and loving.

I stayed at Turning Point in 1993 when I had nowhere else to go. The counselors were not only supportive, they started me on a path of healing that I am still on. I don't know how it is today but back then this place saved me.

The staff was kind. It was kept clean enough, and was not drama fest. Good review from an experienced resident in very short stay.

As I read in another review staff made all kinds of promises to my Daughter and did not full fill them.Instead sent her with a bus pass back to the streets. The staff have conflicting stories and did not even try to get me her family member involved in her moving forward. Now my Daughter is homeless and a missing person in San Diego and I am left broken hearted trying to find her from Texas!Cathy CroteauIf you have private insurance you would probably get better care!

Blasting music since 7am on Sunday morning. Disrespectful to local residents. Police all the time. Seems like more of a party spot.
