medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one’s body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal. Detoxification is really only the first stage of addiction treatment. Medically supervised detoxification is a huge benefit of residential treatment, as around-the-clock care can help ease any withdrawal symptoms and ensure that the individual’s body systems are healthy and working properly. Often, substance use leads to severe neglect of health and nutrition. Residential care offers nutritional support, health monitoring and wellness options that outpatient treatment cannot offer.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

12-step icon12-Step

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex & Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA). At Skywood, participation in 12-Step or similiar programs is voluntary. Their goal is to expose patients to different peer support recovery methods and allow them to choose what works best for them.

aftercare iconAftercare Support

Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

heart-hands iconIntervention Services

Intervention services helps family or friends of addicts stage an intervention, which is a meeting in which loved ones share their concerns and attempt to get an addict into treatment. Professional intervention specialists can help loved ones organize, gather, and communicate with an addict. They can guide intervention participants in describing the damage the addict's behavior is causing and that outside help is necessary to address the addiction. The ideal outcome of an intervention is for the addict to go to rehab and get the help they need.

Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

While many people know it as "day treatment", a partial hospitalization program (PHP) offers treatment during the day and allows you to live at home. PHP treatment typically requires a commitment of at least 20 hours of treatment every week, with a program duration that spans approximately 90 days. While commuting is necessary, some programs offer telehealth options. PHP treatment plans usually include relapse prevention, medication management, and behavioral therapy.

Heart icon Treatment

alcohol iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

drugs iconDrug Addiction

Drug rehab in Michigan provides personalized treatment to help individuals break this cycle and regain control of their lives. Treatment methods are used in various levels of care, including inpatient rehab, partial hospitalization programs, intensive outpatient programs, and standard outpatient treatment.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

opium iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Hand holding medical sign icon Clinical Services

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CMT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse. During a CBT session, patients are shown how to think and behave in ways that will help them reach their self-stated goals. Patients can “unlearn” their unwanted reactions and choose new responses to their thoughts and feelings.

couples-therapy iconCouples Therapy

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

art-brush iconCreative Arts Therapy

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself. So much of treatment is verbal—discussing issues and talking through problems and barriers to sobriety. A non-verbal option like art therapy can provide a welcomed break as well as fresh insights and a new perspective.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Eating Disorder Treatment

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and dysfunctional eating patterns. Many psychologists and other mental health professionals consider eating disorders to be food addictions, meaning food is being used in an addictive way (similar to drug or alcohol addiction). Certain substance abuse treatment programs will have treatment for eating disorders as one of the services offered. An eating disorder may also present as a co-occuring disorder or dual diagnosis alongside drug and alcohol addiction.

equine-therapy iconEquine Therapy

Equine therapy, aka equine-assisted therapy (EAT), is a form of experiential therapy that involves interactions and activities with horses. It does not necessarily involve riding horses, but all activities related to horses, such as feeding, grooming, haltering and leading them. A mental health professional frequently oversees the activities (often in conjunction with a horse professional), and helps patients process their thoughts, feelings, and behavior patterns during and/or after the interaction. Skywood’s Equine Therapy program takes place at the prestigious Cheff Therapeutic Riding Center in nearby Augusta, Michigan. Opened in 1970, the Cheff Center offers therapy services and therapeutic riding year-round, striving to focus on what individuals can accomplish, not on what they cannot. Not only do they offer Equine Therapy and other programs for specialty populations, they also serve as an international training and education center for therapeutic riding programs.

medical-detox iconExperiential Therapy

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

eye-movement iconEye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

EMDR is a therapeutic modality originally developed to help process trauma. In an EMDR session, a patient is prompted to undergo eye movements that mimic those of REM sleep. This is accomplished by watching a therapist's finger move back and forth across, or following a bar of light. The goal is repetitive sets of eye movements that help the brain reprocess memory, which can significantly reduce the intensity of remembered traumatic incidents. Associated memories can heal simultaneously, leaving patients significantly calmer, more stable, and more emotionally relaxed.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation. At Skywood, they have an emphasis on bringing families together for counseling and quality time that can benefit both patients and their loved ones. This is accomplished with the help of a qualified therapist who can influence positive discussion and promote a healing environment. As the family members learn about addiction and mental health conditions, they gain a new understanding of how they themselves can heal and support the recovery process.

Fitness Therapy

Fitness therapy blends exercise with psychotherapy for a fun, inspiring, and effective way of treating addiction and other issues. By incorporating movement into counseling sessions, clients become more empowered, motivated, and goal-oriented, all while strengthening their bodies and becoming more flexible. Fitness Therapy is usually used to complement a course of treatment (inpatient or outpatient) to make it even more successful. Increasing the connection between a patient’s mind and body helps both with healing as well as in creating new, healthy habits.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members. Group therapy offers a safe space where each individual can connect to others who are on the same journey. Even difficult addiction histories can benefit from a supportive group of peers in the right environment. Group therapy is led by experienced and licensed mental health care and recovery professionals.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

desert iconMotivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

nicotine iconNicotine Replacement Therapy

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Nutrition Therapy

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Rational Behavior Therapy

Rational Behavior Therapy (RBT) is a form of cognitive behavioral therapy meant to be short-term and comprehensive. It was intended to help clients become more self-sufficent and move forward without the need for expensive, ongoing therapy. It includes an emotional self-help method called “rational self-counseling,” the purpose of which is to give clients all the skills needed to handle future emotional issues by themselves, or with significantly less professional help.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

I had a mostly positive experience. Everyone was nice. They accommodated me getting to a chemotherapy appointment and took me to the hospital a few times. The food was great. The facility was beautiful. The con which is huge to me, is Angie my therapist at the time called my ex husband after I revoked his privileges and told him things that let to my divorce. I came home to a sold car and being told to get out. Maybe it would have happened eventually anyways, BUT her talking to him was the ending factor. I lost my house and had to move into an rv in Tennessee. I m still sober which is fantastic but I would be extremely firm about enforcing your HIPAA rights. If my experience with everyone else wasn t so lovely I would have reported her but the other people at the facility were so good to me I didn t want to. It put me at a major risk of relapse but I persevered because of the things I was taught while at Skywood. Andy is amazing and went above and beyond to help me find a recovery coach and I m still to this day so thankful for him and his kindness. I remember all the people that were so kind to me. The one bad I just choose to forgive as the one irresponsible bad apple.

My life after 15 months post Skywood has been so beautiful. I am living a full and responsible life! I still use the tools I learned while in Skywood to navigate not only my sobriety but also my personal life. The gratefulness that I feel for their holistic program will always be present. Their programs are created for addicts to become aware of what life needs to be once discharged and to help us navigate through life s ups and downs that we WILL encounter. From being a part of doing chores (serving meals, emptying garbages, etc) to being personally responsible for our own recovery. Basically, trust in the process and the rules. I know it worked for me and many others. If we are not willing to do the work .what are we saying about our own selves? That we don t think we are worth it? Skywood taught me I AM WORTH IT.

Skywood Recovery is not just a treatment center; it's a place where genuine love and care create an environment that fosters true healing. I was fortunate enough to experience this firsthand about 7 months ago, and I can confidently say that Skywood changed my life in ways I never imagined possible. From the moment I arrived, I could feel that this place was different. The director sets the tone with a deep, unwavering commitment to each patient's well-being. It s not just about going through the motions at Skywood, every individual is treated with the utmost respect, dignity, and compassion. The staff members don't just do their jobs; they go above and beyond, forming connections with patients that are rooted in genuine concern and empathy. It s clear that they are not just there to help they are there to heal. The counseling services at Skywood are truly top-tier. The therapists are not only experts in their field but are also deeply invested in the personal growth and recovery of each patient. They create a safe space where you feel understood and supported, allowing you to explore the root causes of addiction and work through them in a meaningful way.One of the standout aspects of Skywood is the atmosphere of family and community. The staff here treat you like one of their own, and this sense of belonging plays a critical role in the recovery process. It s rare to find a place where the staff is so genuinely invested in your journey, where their love and care are palpable in every interaction. And then there s the food. Skywood s chef prepares meals that are not only delicious but also thoughtfully crafted to nourish the body during the healing process. It s just one more way that Skywood goes the extra mile to make sure every aspect of your stay contributes to your recovery. In a world where many treatment centers can feel cold and clinical, Skywood Recovery stands out as a beacon of hope and healing. The love and care that permeate every corner of this place make all the difference. I cannot recommend Skywood Recovery enough to anyone who is struggling with addiction. It s a place where you ll not only receive the treatment you need but also the love and support that will help you truly recover."

Woo boy do I got a doozy of anecdotal information on my stay at Skywood and you can eff right off with that automated response as if theres going to be any recourse for serious issues.I suppose I will start with the positives. I found that a lot of the staff be it an RA, a nurse, or a therapist the staff there really does give a crap and is willing to lend an ear or a shoulder to cry on. However in my experience I found the community and the encouraged attitudes towards peer to peer engagement to be the best part of my stay there. I wont naively say that i have now found some best friends for life (contrary from what i heard from Tony on in-take who was so adamant on that note) but of the few things in immediate retrospect i will miss the little posse i had and the openness of the people around me to hear my story and to share theirs as well. I will go more in depth on the nutritional meals served but having the cereal on deck at anytime was clutch. Oh and the guitars they had laying around was a nice way to bond with other musicians and pass the time cuz you will have A LOT of downtime. One little caveat to my situation here was that i was private pay so all the bs you have to deal with insurance I didn t really have to tow that line since my stay was already paid but we will get back to that in a moment. The negatives. Place is just dirty AF. I understand they only have one woman come in to clean and bless her heart for sticking it out but you d think they could shell out a bit of money for a third party cleaning service to come in and deep clean the place once a week. I mean there was a incredibly questionable stain on my bathroom floor that was there my entire stay in room 34. Overfilled garbages everywhere, dirty toilet seats in detox rooms, and dogwood/the lodge requires a rug doctor. Now i am not going to sit here and disparage the cooking staff since cooking for 50+ people aint easy anywhere but when your website states some bologna about nutritional meals when more than half the time its fried foods and just food that isn t very palatable for detoxing junkies and alcoholics. I had diarrhea the entire 20 days i was there.Onto the lack of transparency and communication. For gods sake were all adults. Numerous times i heard therapist/Angie going behind peoples backs making calls to people to either keep them there or just flat out lying. Bringing 20+ people into the gym to get strip searched and drug tested and having zero clue what the hecks going on. A paitent getting straight up assaulted by a staff member and having hot coffee spilled on them. Same patient having some medical issues late at night and complete lack of communication to 1st shift as he s getting verbally abused to get out of bed and go to class.I was about to go on a rant about my personal experience but im just over it at this point. Basically Angies a liar and just sucks at her job. The RA s jake and rose are flipping great, this does not mean the other RAs suck i just don t remember there names. I think there was a melissa and a mandy 90% of them kill it everyday and not only deserve your respect if you make the choice of coming here but also a pay raise. The nurses barb, brielle, rick, Andrea and i forgot and cant name everyone but they also deserve the utmost respect. Also Lyndsey Clark big ups shes dope and Mykul nice hair great taste in music.Dress for the job you want not for the one you have - thats a saying that has always stuck wiith me but can be used in this instance. This place needs an internal makeover and an external deep clean.May the skywood gods have mercy on your junkie soul if you decide to make this a stop on your road to recovery ..

Unfortunately I have to give the facility a bad review solely because of how I was treated by one individual. Early on I had to write a grievance concerning the medical provider Lindsay Allen, she was condescending and did the bare minimum of what she was required. I asked them to switch me to the other Nurse Practitioner, but they refused. After being in the facility a couple of weeks, I was exposed to COVID by a staff member. They gave me the option to go home or stay but I had to be quarantined for 5 days. I agreed to be quarantined. During that time the staff forgot to bring me meds on multiple occasions, and they also forgot my meals. After the quarantine, I was informed that I now needed to wear a mask for 5 days. Being that I had a mild case, this exceeded the CDC requirements. I returned to the the patient population only to be confronted by Lindsay, informing me that I was being discharged because I pulled my mask down when I was sharing in group. I had no symptoms, never had a fever, and I was well past the point of being contagious. I believe she did this because of the grievance I wrote 2 weeks prior. After being discharged I discovered that Lindsay Allen has terrible reviews from other patients that were treated poorly by her, as I was.
