Overlake BHU was my very first experience of an inpatient psych unit. It s like a hotel! The rooms are amazing, you get a nice window view of the outside, and the food is awesome The groups are a lot. Always participate in them because they will load you with a lot of information about your feelings and emotions and coping skills to help. The staff, all of them are very nice people. I felt safe the entire time and to be honest, I got way too comfortable. The therapists are good people and would always try to help you at any times of crisis. You can also make phone calls whenever.Oh and, make sure to order food in advance (the food is nice!)I found the cases in Overlake to be much milder than other hospitals I have been in, so maybe they have a certain criteria.

Accepted Insurance

Overlake Hospital Medical Center – Behavioral Medicine works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

ECT is a form of treatment in which controlled electric currents are passed through the brain, sometimes causing short seizures. Treatments are done under general anesthesia. ECT appears to change brain chemistry for the better, and has been shown to provide fast and sometimes dramatic improvements in severe mental health conditions that can exist alongside addiction, including depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and suicidality. ECT is also often used by those who prefer it to taking medication.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

My experience here was scary at first but the staff reassured me that everything was okay. I learned so much during my stay. Food is actually pretty good. I'd recommend this place to anyone looking for that help.

I came in for after a traumatic life event. I was sleeping (ish) before I was admitted and slept naturally the night I was admitted but have not since. They insisted on two sleep medication that aggravated my heart condition and now I am afraid to sleep. Like subconsciously, unisom isn t even working. I now have to go to therapy for insomnia to overcome sleep anxiety THEY CAUSED!

omg what i saw this had a 3 star rating this cannot be true. i had such a great experience there, and all my peers had great experiences too. i saw everyone around me go in feeling so, so terrible really the lowest of lows and then we all slowly got better until the end of our 3-5 day stays where we all felt hopeful for the future, even if there was sometimes some anxiety with that hope. on a table in the common area, there s literally a stack full of thank you notes from patients before they leave thanking the staff there for such a great time to turn their lives around. the staff there are so kind and patient, and they talk to you like you re people who they really believe in trust me, i ve definitely been to an inpatient psych program where the staff was obviously nervous and scared around us, and this did not feel like that. they gently encourage you to come to group and eat food, and they listen to you and really care about you. i don t get these 1 star reviews i was there for five days, and i probably saw around 15 people come in and out of there all starting off feeling so bad and all leaving so, so, so much better. i really liked my time here, and it was critical in changing my life around. if you re feeling bad, please know that these people are 100% here to help you!!

It's ya girl here just dropping in to fight the stigma of getting help for your mental health needs.I spent a few days on the Overlake Behavioral Health Unit, I got out yesterday (4 day stay). Before I start, I just wanna say I'm feeling much better now. Maybe not 100% but I am safe now.As of last Tuesday, I was ready to end my life. At the urging of my psychiatrist, I went to inpatient. It was scary relinquishing my autonomy. But I understood that I couldn't be trusted with it at that time. I was sent to the BHU at Overlake hospital from my local ER.It was honestly such a good experience. The rules were pretty strict (no touching!) which was fine with me. I was treated with respect by all the staff. I did intensive group therapy 5 times a day. I felt safe. And if I didn't feel safe, they had staff 24/7 ready to help me. There weren't any restraints or forced medicating. Though you were expected to take what the doctor prescribed for you, the 2 doctors on the unit asked me if I was comfortable changing medication or fiddling with dosage. The unit itself is modern and clean. You get your own private bedroom and bathroom. There is a good sized "living room" shared space and a puzzle room, too.Plus the group community (14 people) was honestly so nice. Meeting people who can openly "get it" can be rare for me.Inpatient there is on average 3-5 days.If you ever need inpatient, I highly recommend Overlake in Bellevue.

Wish I could give no stars. A loved one came in seeking voluntary inpatient admission and was turned away because they did not meet criteria. Without being seen by a physician, the social worker decided that someone who is experiencing suicidal ideation, and is unable to properly care for themselves would be better served by waiting at home for a week and then starting a 6-8 week outpatient program. Ridiculous. Overlake and specifically the social worker, Daisy, will be responsible if something happens that could have been prevented had they received the appropriate care. Disgusting.

I participated in the Overlake Day Program and the trajectory of my life has been changed. It is an intense program with a lot of material that has helped me to see things from a different, more hopeful perspective. I witnessed myself and others transform into people who feel optimistic about their future with a belief that with continued hard work that they can retrain their brains to heal and think differently. This was all in just 8 days too! I was provided with so many helpful tools, skills and strategies, and ways to cope when struggling. The staff are all so encouraging, enthusiastic about what they do, and knowledgeable about what they are teaching. I HIGHLY recommend this program!

Best decision I ever made. The doctors, nurses, therapists, secretaries, and the rest of the staff were very kind and welcoming. I stayed for 5 days and never once did I doubt how much they care about their work and patients. Here, you aren t just a number, but an imperfectly perfect human being. The food is amazing, even catering to vegan/vegetarian/pescatarian diets which was much appreciated. And the cleaning staff is so friendly, I was blown away. The only negative thing I have to say is that it felt very isolating to eat alone In my room without anything to entertain myself with, but this is understandable due to covid policies. Some things to note for anyone thinking about coming here:1. There is a massive emphasis on group-therapy. If that isn t something you can handle, I recommend going elsewhere. Seriously, take care of yourself. However, for those who can tolerate that, I found it is a wonderful tool for getting out of your comfort zone. Depression has a way of isolating people that not many understand, but this helps. On the flip side, you do get to see the psychiatrist once a day for short periods of time which was nice. Dr. Ivanova was amazing and honestly deserves a raise or something.2. There is a medication window open 24/7. If you can t sleep, poo, feel anxious, are in pain, etc there IS help available. Don t be afraid to ask for anything you might need. Additionally, they take everyone s vitals twice a day, so be aware of that if you have any discomfort around that.3. The front counter area is also open 24/7. Often times people come in super late at night. They re already having one of the worst days of their lives. They may be sleepy, drugged, or whatever may have you- so many miss what s told to them during the initial stages of getting in. The secretaries at the counter are going to be your greatest allies here. PLEASE, ask them for anything you need, whether it be an extra pillow, blanket, temperature control, open/shutting blinds, phone, tablet, mask, or even just someone to talk to. I promise they aren t bothered by it as they actually care about your emotional/physical well-being and needs.4. There is always a therapist or nurse available. If you ever feel like harming yourself or others, please notify them. They are there to help you and have no problem listening to you vent and helping you to the best of their ability.5. The program is very structured. There are 5 groups a day that every patient must attend. They last about an hour but are jam packed with useful information to be healthy both inside and out of the facility. Please attend, you won t regret it. Outside of that, you get about an hour in between every lesson to do whatever you please. Plus two visitation hours a day. You may not bring a blanket, but pillows are okay. Outside clothes are fine, but no strings- they will take it from you. No phones or iPads either. If you do not have clothes with you the first night, they have some available until someone can drop some off for you. Be warned, some of the heavier people may have a harder time finding things that fit, I ve noticed. Standard stuff I think.6. Some things I wish I d known before going: you don t have to reuse the same towel everyday. There is a place to bring dirty ones by the nurses office and you can new ones by the water machine/ snack bar. There is always food available in the drawers/fridge. Any essential toiletries can be found in the same place. To order food you must call a 4-digit number. If you have anxiety with this, a staff member can help you. The whole facility is handicap accessible, including one of the rooms. If you ever feel over stimulated, there is a quiet room you can relax in. There is no outside time, unfortunately, but you can walk laps around the common area. Do not hang anything/touch the top of the doors, an alarm will sound.7. If you want to be successful then participate. Though it isn t for everyone, I truest believe the tools they teach here are universal in that there is at least one thing there that can help.
