About Sandstone Care Denver

Sandstone Care Denver is a treatment center for teens and young adults struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. With many other locations, Sandstone Care offers a full continuum of care. Our programs include extended residential, day treatment, intensive outpatient treatment, detox, after-school recovery, and sober living.

Sandstone Care believes in providing an evidence-based, integrated treatment program for adolescents and young adults that is customized for the needs of each individual client. The facility applies today’s most effective treatment methods that not only address any teenage substance abuse issues but also treat any underlying mental health conditions.

Afternoon and Evening Programming

Over 17 Hours of Weekly Programming

The Extended Care Treatment Program is designed for individuals stepping down from residential treatment to help them solidify their commitment to sobriety in early recovery and achieve long-term, sustainable recovery. Extended Care is comprised of both Day Treatment and Intensive Outpatient programming and is typically a 90 to 180 day treatment process. Sandstone Care’s Denver substance abuse treatment facility for teens and young adults is conveniently located directly off I-25 and Evans Boulevard, adjacent to Denver University. Steps away from the light rail public transportation, you can come easily from much of the Greater Denver Metro Area.

The Day Treatment Program (“PHP”) is a 5 to 30 day treatment process which offers 5 days a week of outpatient clinical care with individuals residing at home or in sober living. Sandstone Care’s Day Treatment Program consists of over 35 hours of weekly programming. Sandstone Care’s Outpatient Program (“OP”) typically runs 90 to 180 days and includes weekly relapse prevention groups as well as continued access to family support services to help support and sustain lasting recovery.

The Intensive Outpatient Program (“IOP”) is a 60 to 90 day treatment program catered to individuals who are stepping down from day treatment or residential programs, are in early recovery and refining their skills to support sustainable recovery, or who are struggling but have the skills and stability to maintain a school and work schedule in addition to being in treatment. Sandstone Care’s IOP consists of over 17 hours of weekly programming.

car-building iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

house-medical iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

house-medical iconAftercare

Clients engaged in a rehab aftercare program have completed active addiction treatment and are receiving services designed to promote their sustained sobriety. Drug rehab aftercare typically encompasses a wide variety of medical, mental health, and social services meant to facilitate clients' reintegration into their home, workplace, and community. Clients typically collaborate with their case manager and/or recovery team to identify and access the services they need, often including peer coaching, career counseling, and care referrals.

book-medical icon12-Step

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

house iconSober Living Homes

Sober Living Houses (SLHs), aka sober homes or halfway houses, are safe, substance-free, supportive living facilities for those recovering from substance abuse. Ideal for those who've just been through inpatient or outpatient treatment, SLHs are supervised environments with rules that support sobriety, such as curfews, shared chores, and therapeutic meetings. Residents are also often trained on life skills and coping skills to make it easier to transition into society. SLHs also provide a strong sense of community that can lead to the kind of deep and lasting connections with other sober individuals that supports a new, healthy lifestyle.

people-group iconIntervention Services

Intervention services helps family or friends of addicts stage an intervention, which is a meeting in which loved ones share their concerns and attempt to get an addict into treatment. Professional intervention specialists can help loved ones organize, gather, and communicate with an addict. They can guide intervention participants in describing the damage the addict's behavior is causing and that outside help is necessary to address the addiction. The ideal outcome of an intervention is for the addict to go to rehab and get the help they need.

hospital iconPartial Hospitalization Program

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don’t require 24-hour care. PHPs have structured programming (i.e. individual and/or group therapy), and usually meet 3-5 days a week for around 6 hours (i.e. 9am-3m). Some PHPs are residential (patients sleep on site) and some are not, so patients sleep at home. PHPs can last from 1-6 months, and some offer transportation and meals.

truck-medical icon24-Hour Clinical Care

Detox can be dangerous if not properly supervised, making 24-hour clinical care in Colorado an essential tool in the recovery process. The constant monitoring by medical professionals helps individuals through critical stages of recovery. Medical professionals and addiction specialists are available 24/7 to provide medications that ease withdrawal symptoms and to treat any other issues that arise.

clipboard-medical iconMedically Assisted Detox

Detoxification can be medically-supervised in either an outpatient or an inpatient setting. Generally when people talk about “medical detox,” they are referring to an acute care inpatient program, where medical help is available 24/7. Sometimes medically-supervised detox involves taking prescription medications to help the body taper off the substance in question or to reduce the severity of withdrawal symptoms. Sometimes it simply involves monitoring a person to make sure that no complications arise.

book iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

prescription iconDrug Addiction

Professional services are often necessary to recover from addiction. Drug rehab in Colorado provides the expert services needed to address the complex issues of addiction and help individuals start their recovery journey.

head-side-medical iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

file-medical iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

prescription-bottle-pill iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

file-medical iconSubstance Abuse

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) focuses on the relationship between thoughts, feelings and behaviors. It helps people to identify unhealthy thought patterns, and how these may be contributing to destructive behaviors and beliefs. There are a variety of therapies that fit under this general umbrella, including Rational Behavior Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, and Cognitive Therapy.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Individual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Trauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Couples Therapy

Based on the couple's needs, couples therapy may take different forms. Your therapist will probably take an integrated approach, using techniques from several methods such as cognitive behavioral therapy and psychodynamic couple's therapy. The goal is to work through challenges and strengthen your relationship.

Family Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Life Skills

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

I was a patient at Sandstone Care a year ago in January and words cannot even begin to express how much this place has changed my life. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable, kind, and all around good people. They care about their clients, are invested, and will go to extremes to make sure we are okay, safe and that our needs are taken care of. I did two rounds of care at Sandstone and both times I was treated with respect and got the help I was seeking. My therapist, Trisha Johnson, was the most amazing therapist I had and taught me so much about myself that I didn't even recognize. They have unique methods of teaching, understanding, and mentoring that has helped me become an entirely new person.Sandstone has changed my life--they saved my life from going down a dangerous path I did not want. I have been sober for a little over a year now and choosing Sandstone was the best decision of my life. I have my life back and all the people who saw me struggle has seen this new version of me and are also very grateful for what Sandstone does for their clients. This place helped me make sober connections and long lasting friendships. They also have a staff I will never forget and be forever grateful for.If anyone is struggling with mental health and addiction, I highly recommend Sandstone Care. Unlike other facilities, Sandstone cares about people and what they do with their life. If it wasn't for my decision to go here for help, I would definitely not be where I am today or successful with my life. I could go on and on about my experience here, because I never had a recovery program like this before. After completing my time at Sandstone Care, I now know my true self, and love myself more than I ever have!

I would highly recommend Sandstone to anyone struggling with substance use and/or mental health. I went to multiple rehabs before attending Sandstone, and Sandstone was the first rehab that I actually wanted to be at. They aren t shoving anything in your face or forcing you to adhere to a certain kind of recovery. They just present tools based on scientific evidence and research. The staff is incredible, supportive, and clearly actually wants to see you succeed. And they offer a ton of ongoing support after you re discharged; you re never alone. If you want a rehab with kind, reasonable, qualified people (and proven methods of recovery), go to Sandstone Care, seriously.

Sandstone was a literal life-saver for me. I got the chance to go through their dual diagnosis residential treatment program, as well as PHP and IOP. I can say that every single therapist I worked with during my time through each of these steps was incredibly invested in my recovery and personal growth. I was given the tools I needed to move past a really dark time in my life, and I am proud to say that I recently hit 18 months clean and am feeling more solid in my sobriety than ever!
