I sent my daughter to Newport during a time when she was truly struggling and needed a step up in care. We were met with caring and compassionate staff that wanted to help guide her in a path of healing. They didn t make it easy for her, she had to do the personal and hard work in order to feel better and be discharged. She ended up being there for a little over two months with step down care to PHP for another 3 months. Overall I am so thankful and pleased with the progress she has made and it wouldn t have been possible without Newport and their amazing staff offering their support to her and our family.

I know the following may sound crazy to many people, so I d like to start with a quick intro. I ve worked in the mental health field for over 5 years - wilderness therapy with 72hr shifts, a youth shelter, group homes, and everybody s favorite, long-term residential. Between the 4 of these, I ve been attacked/spit on/bit more times than I care to admit, emotionally abused by management, and have put an embarrassing number of clients in holds. I took a year off after a work-related concussion, then, very hesitantly, decided to apply to Newport. I was offered the job and immediately began questioning everything and everybody. For the first 3 months I had my guard up, and head on a swivel; surely I was going to be hit. It s been 2.5 years, and I m happy to say I haven t been hit once! For me, Newport (Virginia) has been a breath of fresh air, an opportunity to breathe, and has allowed me to slowly heal from my PTSD. Yes, it does have its flaws and drama, but it pales in comparison to most jobs in the field. Some of our clients are difficult to work with, but they re making progress. Our clients go on outings, can go outside regularly, and are in a therapeutic environment that gives them (most of them) to show significant progress in a month or 2. When they re done with their stay, we have a department that ensures they re set up for success and continued therapy. While I understand my experience will not be everyone s, I urge you to try it out.

Sent my child here when she was running away and self harming. Not only did they make the problem worse by pampering her delusions they never input our insurance even though on intake they said they accepted our insurance and now we have a lovely bill of $363,000 after the fact. Wasn t until I made her move somewhere else that any progress was made! It has been a ridiculous waste of time and money. I will never see that money in the lifetime I live and now it s on us?? Insane. Do not put your child here.

Accepted Insurance

Newport Academy works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
aftercare iconAftercare
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) offers a structured environment for intensive treatment of behavioral and substance use disorders. PHP treatment can consist of sessions ranging from 6-8 hours per day for an average of 90 days. You can often expect to engage in behavioral therapies, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and receive medication. PHP treatment is often covered either fully or partially by insurance providers.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

When men and women in Virginia participate in group therapy sessions, they learn to freely express their emotions in a non judgmental setting. This helps you process your feelings and begin to understand the link between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that are associated with addictive behavior.

Men and women in Virginia use individual therapy to focus on addiction related challenges as a necessary part of their drug and alcohol addiction treatment. Your therapist guides you in developing coping strategies, setting realistic goals, and building a strong foundation for an improved quality of life.

Trauma therapy helps you understand and manage the emotional and physical responses that often follow witnessing or experiencing traumatic events. Using therapeutic interventions, your therapist works with you to reframe that experience, which in turn reduces your anxiety and helps you regain control over your life.

Family therapists work with all members of the family to understand the roles they play in the addiction dynamic. Addressing these patterns is crucial to developing healthier ways to interact and support each other, as well as contributing to a more effective recovery for their loved ones.

Recreational therapy is often a part of a holistic treatment center program for drug and alcohol addiction in Virginia. It offers structured activities that replace substance use with positive experiences like swimming, painting, and hiking. These encourage social interactions, promote physical and mental health, and help reduce stress, all of which are factors that are important to help you rebuild your life.

Because some people find it difficult to talk about their experiences, creative arts therapy is often used to supplement talk therapy. This expressive form of therapy offers a variety of outlets to explore and communicate emotions.

My daughter went here after escalating symptoms of what her therapists have said is likely borderline personality disorder or a mood disorder or both. She just lied her whole face off and they believed everything she told them, not even bothering to review her actual documented history. They discharged her with little progress at all, did not complete the treatment program they promise on their website or in their paperwork and basically treated her as though we haven t been taking her to mental health professionals the last 4 years trying to get answers and help. Now she refuses to participate in after care or transition plan at all and just makes up random stories about any diagnosis or lack thereof depending on who she s telling. Her records from there look like they re talking about a completely different person than her previous evaluations and therapies, making it even harder for us to get her appropriate treatment. Do not recommend this place if you re like looking for real help. This is a very expensive bandaid at best.

This place made me feel very, very trapped. We did the same thing every day, there s NO therapy on the weekends, and I just felt 100% worse being there. Luckily I was able to get out of there after 3 days using my own strategies, but I did not feel cared for by the higher level staff whatsoever. I am doing so much better at home and have my own future ahead of me. Not 40 days of terror. I highly doubt that any staff of people of that nature are reading this, but I highly suggest adding therapy on the weekends if you want the process to be more effective. Maybe even make it a choice just for the weekends. To anyone reading this, if you have to go here without consent, good luck. -Umbra

Me and my family are so grateful for the Newport Academy family! It's not ever a service you want to use but I'm so thankful that I found them while seeking care for our 13yr old daughter. From the moment I called about a possible placement to months after discharge, I feel like our family mattered, that my daughters mental health mattered and that they cared. So much different then hospital visits and stays. It was hard to have our daughter away from us but there were so many supports in place to help us navigate our feelings throughout her stay. She came home much more confident, capable and well on her way to healing.
