About Heywood Hospital

Heywood Hospital in Gardner, Massachusetts, provides treatment for mental health disorders. They’re committed to helping people who are experiencing everything from anxiety and depression to more complex psychiatric conditions. They offer a wide range of services under their behavioral health umbrella. I appreciate that they try to cater to different needs by offering standard outpatient care and more intensive options. It’s also helpful that they work with many insurance providers.

Their mental health program can support you through a variety of treatment options. Their outpatient counseling services provide both individual and group therapy. This is a good option if you need support but prefer a flexible approach that doesn’t interfere too much with your daily life. If you need a little more structured help they also offer an intensive outpatient program. This program is a step up from regular therapy to give you more focused care while still allowing you to stay at home and maintain your regular responsibilities.

If you or a loved one is in urgent need they have staff available around the clock to help stabilize your situation. I like that they have this strong support system in place for those tougher moments.

They also have specialized services like medication management and psychiatric evaluation. These can be really helpful for getting to the bottom of what’s going on and finding the right treatment path for you.

When you complete their treatment program you may also receive aftercare. These services provide ongoing support for long term success. They may include continued counseling, support groups and referrals to community resources.

Medical briefcase icon Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient programs are designed for clients who are medically stable and not at an elevated risk of relapse, including those who have already completed inpatient care. Outpatient programs typically advance clients' established treatment plans, offering continuing addiction counseling and recovery education. Clients who enter outpatient care immediately following detox may also receive medical and mental health assessments and personalized treatment plans. Most outpatient rehabs provide multiple levels of care to align with clients' unique needs.

heart-hands iconIntervention Services

A drug intervention in Massachusetts provides friends and family the opportunity to share how a person's substance use has caused problems in their lives. The goal of the intervention is to encourage the person to get the treatment they need. Most rehab facilities offer intervention services that can help families prepare for the intervention and facilitate entry into treatment if the person agrees to get help.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) facilitate clients' sustained sobriety through high-level care aligned with their evolving needs. Clients engage in multiple treatment sessions per week, typically receiving between nine and 20 hours of outpatient care weekly. The frequency and intensity of treatment gradually decreases as clients stabilize. Many intensive outpatient rehabs offer a variety of services, including addiction counseling, recovery-focused life skills training, and medication assisted treatment (MAT). Evidence-based complementary therapies are also common.

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

A partial hospitalization program (PHP), also known as day treatment, allows you to receive rehab-level care while living at home. PHP treatment requires a minimum of 20 hours of treatment each week for an average of 90 days. PHP treatment plans can vary depending on your needs but typically includes relapse prevention, medication management, and evidence-based therapies, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). Most insurance providers fully or partially cover PHP treatment.

24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care

Due to various health issues that substance abuse causes, 24-hour clinical care in Massachusetts is often a necessary part of treatment. Individuals may be suffering from infections, illness, or organ damage. Having 24-hour care available ensures that these physical problems are treated along with the psychological effects of addiction. Once individuals complete detox and are medically stable, this intensive level of supervision ends, and the next phase of treatment can begin.

mental-health iconMental Health

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Hand holding medical sign icon Clinical Services

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

couples-therapy iconCouples Therapy

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

medicare iconElectroconvulsive Therapy

ECT is a form of treatment in which controlled electric currents are passed through the brain, sometimes causing short seizures. Treatments are done under general anesthesia. ECT appears to change brain chemistry for the better, and has been shown to provide fast and sometimes dramatic improvements in severe mental health conditions that can exist alongside addiction, including depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and suicidality. ECT is also often used by those who prefer it to taking medication.

medical-detox iconExperiential Therapy

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

nicotine iconNicotine Replacement Therapy

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Nutrition Therapy

There is a strong link between nutrition and addiction. That's why drug rehab in Massachusetts includes nutrition therapy to teach you healthy eating habits that support addiction recovery. You'll learn what foods your body needs for healing and long term health.

Awful awful awful patient care. I brought my daughter in with an abscess tooth from a botched root canal, she was shaking, vomiting and her BP was 149/80. She had started her antibiotic from the dentist earlier today, and we were told by the dentist to go to the ER if there was swelling or increased pain(she has both). All these were signs of increased pain. We waited in the waiting room for 2.5 hours before being taken to a patient room. The nurse John did let us know they were busy, but assured her she would be seen in the next hour. NOT ONE PERSON CHECKED ON HER FOR ANOTHER 2 HOURS!! And even then, we made the choice to leave, because when I asked the "tech" how much longer, he said " could probably be a couple more hours". He was very rude when I informed him we were leaving, stating " good luck, you'll just have to start all over again".I have gone to Haywood for many years, I actually preferred them to other hospitals, but they have exhibited a rapid decline in caring for their patients. I can understand being understaffed, how hard that can be, but to completely disregard a person's needs in an emergency room is unacceptable. Is it really a burden or too much to check your patients even once an hour, see if they need anything..... DO BETTER HAYWOOD, do better

Recently, my grandson who is only 12 broke his ankle in three different places. The nurse practitioner who saw him refused to send him home with any pain management medication. We had to drive to another hospital 40 minutes away and wait three hours to be seen by a Doctor Who agreed it was ridiculous to expect a 12 year old to manage a break like that without any type of pain relief. My dog would get better treatment at a veterinarian emergency clinic.

It sounds to me that the hospital has the same response to everyone, so the response, its a "stamped" response, nothing personal about it. I really don't think you are striving to correct anything, maybe you need to hire new staff and strive for that.

Was in the er, waiting over 2 hrs after being in a car accident the day before. After sitting there watching other people get called before me, after I had already been there, I said something. I was told, I don't know what too tell you, I'm not in charge here. I left.

Several issues need to be addressed here. Upon arrival, two security guards were seen smoking in the patient parking area. Also, it appeared that one of them was not smoking tobacco but instead it appeared to be marijuana and smelled like it as well. Heywood hospital has a strict tobacco free policy but the so called security guards are smoking tobacco and marijuana in the patient parking area. If I were to participate in similar behavior at my place of employment, it would result in the termination of my employment. Also, in the past, a so called medical professional known as Dr. Shear was extremely rude and displayed very poor bedside manner as well as two nurses that were working at that time. They put me in a room that was not clean and had blood and fecal matter on the floor. That is very unprofessional and these problems need to be addressed so they do not happen in the future. No one should have to be exposed to bodily fluids from someone else, especially when they are already sick. It's disgusting and Heywood Hospital should be ashamed of themselves for not cleaning up after their clients. I would recommend that if you have a serious medical issue to go to a different hospital such as Leominster MA, Peterborough NH, or a Worcester area hospital. Unfortunately Heywood Hospital ER and OR are underperforming and need some serious help. The people who are in charge of this hospital should be ashamed of themselves yet I am sure that they are earning much more money than they could ever need and they do not deserve it. Shame on them!... As I am currently sitting in the ER at Heywood, I have been here for over two hours and almost nothing has been done yet there are 8 staff members in the ER standing around laughing and joking. It's baffling to me. There are very few patients here yet nothing is getting done. I should already have been discharged but the ER staff is still standing around seemingly joking around with each other wasting time. Very few staff are actually working. It's frustrating! I then found out that they were keeping me there because the longer they kept me, the more money they made. The head nurse came in stating that she had reviewed my labs finding nothing wrong. One minute prior to that she had said that the labs had not been reviewed and that I was not allowed to leave. I then discovered that they were trying to keep me there just to charge my insurance. At this point I decided to leave against medical advice because it seemed as though they were playing games with me when I went there thinking that they were going to help me but instead they tried to scam me.... What a shame! I'm sure that these people are smart but the empathy and ethics are not there. PLEASE GO TO A DIFFERENT HOSPITAL FOR YOUR OWN WELL BEING!!!! These so called medical professionals are just in it for the money and unfortunately do not care about your health.

My 20 year old son was attacked by a pit bull yesterday. He went to Heywood Hospital to get looked at. They didn't even bother cleaning it out. They didn't do x-rays or anything. They discharged him and he was still bleeding. He ended up going to another hospital and he needed stitches!! I'm a nurse and I am very disappointed in the lack of care he received. The only good thing they did, was to give him a tetanus shot.
