I feel like as a woman of color my concerns with diversity were not listened to at all. I routinely watched nonbinary people getting misgendered. One therapist, David, routinely showed racial preference towards white men in the sessions in choosing who was to speak and I got silenced and ignored as a woman of color. When I brought up my racial concerns to another member of the staff they were brushed off and dismissed as something that couldn't be changed. This morning I was feeling happy before going to IOP and now I am really unhappy, so it was not therapeutic for me at all. There were some really great therapists there you should try to see privately like Benji.

Foundations has been an invaluable resource in my journey towards recovery. After trying various inpatient programs, IOP, harm reduction methods, and continually struggling to maintain sobriety, I was drawn to Foundations for its dual diagnosis treatment approach. My psychiatric provider recommended finding a program that could address both my mental health and substance use disorder, and Foundations proved to be the perfect fit.The intake process, though it took some time over the phone, was handled with care and understanding by Dana. She navigated the sensitive questions with grace, despite them delving into past traumas. Upon arriving for my first day, I was warmly greeted and guided through the necessary paperwork, which was comprehensive and provided me with valuable information to refer back to at my own pace.I found the group sessions to be particularly impressive, with counselors adeptly guiding discussions on challenging subjects. As someone familiar with such programs, I expected a certain level of professionalism, which the counselors consistently demonstrated. The group format, including individual check-ins and educational components, fostered a sense of community among clients a vital aspect of the recovery journey. The educational components were delivered in a manner that felt relevant and engaging, thanks to the counselors' deep understanding of the subjects. Their diverse backgrounds, ranging from end-of-life chaplaincy to somatic therapy, brought valuable perspectives to the discussions. Topics, centered around DBT strategies, were rotated regularly, ensuring a well-rounded approach to treatment. In addition to group sessions, clients benefit from weekly drug testing, individual therapy, and access to case management a comprehensive support system designed to address various aspects of recovery. The physical space at Foundations is welcoming and comfortable, with amenities like couches, ping pong tables, and a well-stocked kitchen contributing to a sense of ease. The presence of adorable dogs further adds to the inviting atmosphere. Moreover, the convenience of nearby parking in a parking structure with validated parking has been a huge bonus, easing logistical concerns and adding to the overall positive experience at Foundations. On a deeply personal level, I can't emphasize enough how much I cherish Foundations. My success in recovery wouldn't have been possible without it. As a professional, it provided me with a supportive environment where peers understood the challenges I faced. I've forged meaningful friendships and a sense of community that has been crucial to my journey. The bonds I've formed with the staff have allowed me to be my true self a tremendous relief in itself. In fact, I've continued my involvement with Foundations by participating in their weekly outpatient program. The structured approach and unwavering support have been instrumental in maintaining my progress. Being part of their alumni program is another highlight for me. It's incredibly fulfilling to connect with past clients, old and new friends alike, and share our experiences, challenges, and successes in recovery.Without hesitation, I wholeheartedly recommend Foundations. Its holistic approach, supportive atmosphere, dedicated staff, and convenient amenities make it a beacon of hope for anyone seeking lasting recovery.

Accepted Insurance

Foundations San Fransisco works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
12-step icon12-Step
Participants engaged in 12 step programs receive intensive peer coaching (sponsorship) and community support. Spiritual development as a means of achieving psychological and emotional healing and growth is the cornerstone of 12 step recovery, but religious affiliations are not required. Meetings are free, anonymous, and open to the public, though specialized formats are available, including groups for seniors, teens, and family members. Evening, night, and day meetings are conducted year-round in most communities.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
When addicted, quitting your drug of choice suddenly can be dangerous. That's why experts agree a medically assisted detox is the safest way to remove addictive substances from the body. Usually done in an inpatient setting, your vitals signs and overall well being are consistently monitored and rechecked in order to keep you safe and ensure the detox is successful.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse treatment center has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track. When co-occurring addiction and mental health issues are treated concurrently, individuals are much more likely to achieve and maintain a healthy, balanced lifestyle. They offer integrated treatment using evidence-based methods for the best chance of long-term success in recovery.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

During group therapy, men and women learn to express their emotions openly in a non judgmental setting. This helps you process your feelings and reduces feelings of social isolation that are often associated with addiction.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Trauma therapy is a structured approach used by therapists to help you heal from a past traumatic event. Your therapist works with you to identify the traumatic memory and process the information so you experience emotional healing and a sense of safety and stability.

The goal of couples therapy in California is to strengthen the couple's relationship. The therapist may take one or more approaches to counseling which may include the Gottman method, emotionally focused therapy, behavioral therapy, and psychodynamic couple's therapy.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

I did PHP/IOP here. Therapist are all great, every staff member is welling to go to any lengths to help with any client. They have a flexible schedule offering either in person 12-3p groups or virtual 530-830p meetings and they over amazing holistic services. Groups are usually very constructive and helpful. I see that there are some very negative reviews about the group intros being too long and they can be lengthy at times but, different group members have different needs on different days. I would look past those reviews. Overall great program and highly recommend.

Complete Garbage Don t Waste Your Time Here. The welcoming committee is a dog named Panda, no actual humans there to greet you. Then they have you spend hours signing documents & their so-called intensive outpatient program consists of squeezing nearly 30 people into a small room. After a brief meditation & going around the room & everyone getting a brief opportunity to talk, an hour has already flown by. No mention of 12 steps, no talk of self strategies to maintain your sobriety in early recovery & no opportunity to even formally introduce yourself as a newcomer to the group on your first day there. There only in it for the money, this place will drive you back to drinking or using again. Stay as far away from this place as you possibly can. I get more out of AA/NA meetings then I ever will get here & there completely free. I HIGHLY recommend MPI based in Oakland. The counselors, doctors & nurses all there are top notch and @ least there, they care.

This program left me more traumatized than it did help. It will be a long time before I m healed from this. If there is possibility that you have other issues, especially mental health, please find other resources. Not to mention the predatory signing of documents

Staff: 1/5- Dr. Pappas served as both the mouthpiece and backbone of this program, without her foundations wouldn t be in business. (like Michael Jordan playing with a special needs team)Clients (based on willingness to retain information and apply material to sobriety): 1/5Clients appeared to be going through the motions..either court or employer mandated. Nobody seemed to take any of the material serious but also followed the counselors lead in their lack of interest, sincerity and commitment.Individual Therapy: (Psychologist and Psychiatrist) 4/5:Led by Dr. Bertram and Dr. Pappas, the only respectable component of the program, consistent communication, genuine interest and an understanding in clients wellbeing, humble and personable while serving clients needs.Structure/Organization/Communication: 1/5The intake director (in charge of facilitating appointments and scheduling) One of the most disorganized human beings I ve ever met, missed several therapy appointments and groups due to her relaying the wrong times and information) not sure why she has a job in recovery, had no idea how to speak with people in recovery. Incredibly condescending and doesn t know any of the clients names.Overall Program Execution:2/5Outside of Pappas this program is an absolute mockery of efficiency, structure and dependability. This program lacks the qualities of a functioning business for addicts and alcoholics who are seeking help. They stay in auto pilot mode, going through the motions, barely meet the minimum requirements without offering any real substance, support or authenticity. Money hungry, values folks who pay out of pocket more than others on insurance. This program sincerely feels like a simulation of a real program filled with regurgitated powerpoint slides, arrogant counselors and a general environment that is not conducive to gaining the essentials of the post inpatient recovery process.

It's a sham. You'll pay thousands for art therapy, a yoga room, and therapists whose go-to prescription is AA meetings. Unfortunately outpatient programs like this aren't based in science, but rather outdated dogma. You're better off getting a Naltrexone scrip, attending SMART and/or Refuge, and trying out the Sinclair Method (though I'm definitely not a doctor). Harm reduction is a viable thing.
