About Bournewood Hospital

Bournewood Hospital is a trusted treatment center for addiction and mental health in Brookline, Massachusetts. They have inpatient treatment for people who need care around the clock and a partial hospitalization program for people who do need active treatment but don’t need to live there.

This Brookline hospital treats teens ages 12-18 and adults ages 18 and older. Every client gets a custom treatment plan plus you’ll have meetings every week to talk about your plan and make sure it fits what you need. Programs have a lot of group therapy but they also have trauma therapy, addiction education, and medication management. The staff makes sure your family will be involved in your treatment too so you’ll have a strong and informed support system when you go home.

There are a couple features of the Bournewood Hospital that are especially interesting. First, they just opened a new 12 bed adult inpatient center. With only 11 other clients, you’ll be able to get plenty of attentive and personalized care. Second, they have a special partial hospitalization program for LGBTQIA+ clients who have drug or alcohol addiction and co-occurring disorders (meaning mental health issues along with substance use disorder). There aren’t many places like this so it can make sure these clients feel safe and accepted while they get the care they need.

At age 55... I have come to realize that just because someone has a job... It does not mean you can trust that they will do their job. My daughter was in there on a section 12 because she is bi-polar/schizophrenia and was experiencing a SIGNIFICANT psychotic episode. The psychiatrist assigned to her at Bournewood was completely tone deaf and failed observing my daughter because my mentally ill daughter wouldn't talk. And because my daughter wouldn't open up, the psychiatrist gave up and made up her own narrative and it was way off the mark. I'm disappointed and disgusted.

Accepted Insurance

Bournewood Hospital works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Bournewood's inpatient programs are an appropriate choice for people needing a highly structured hospital setting where they can focus on addressing mental health and chemical dependency conditions and their recovery. Their inpatient system includes separate units for individuals needing more intensive treatment, as well as treatment for co-occurring mental health and addiction conditions.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
Intervention services helps family or friends of addicts stage an intervention, which is a meeting in which loved ones share their concerns and attempt to get an addict into treatment. Professional intervention specialists can help loved ones organize, gather, and communicate with an addict. They can guide intervention participants in describing the damage the addict's behavior is causing and that outside help is necessary to address the addiction. The ideal outcome of an intervention is for the addict to go to rehab and get the help they need.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP), also known as day treatment, allows you to receive rehab-level care while living at home. PHP treatment requires a minimum of 20 hours of treatment each week for an average of 90 days. PHP treatment plans can vary depending on your needs but typically includes relapse prevention, medication management, and evidence-based therapies, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). Most insurance providers fully or partially cover PHP treatment.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
At certain points in the recovery process, it’s important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand. What sets Bournewood apart is their commitment to having a psychiatrist physician on the campus 24 hours a day, every day as well as their triage, assessment and admissions process that also operates 24 hours a day, every day.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Addiction is a highly complex problem, and drug rehab in Massachusetts is often necessary to address it. These programs treat physical, mental, and relational issues that are involved. Treatment empowers individuals to manage these issues without the use of drugs.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
child-program thumbnail image
Child Program
The providers who specialize in the children's rehab space understand the specialized needs that this population faces. School-based and social services such as tutoring and family counseling are often central to treatment. Child programs may also address the needs of youth experiencing substance abuse in the home, including a parent's or sibling's addiction.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

If you are experiencing intense, negative emotions, dialectical behavior therapy can help you learn how to regulate painful emotions and manage the interpersonal situations that generate them. This method is often used during substance use treatment in Massachusetts to help you develop better coping skills and avoid relapse.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Awful, horrible place. Never send your loved ones here unless you want them to leave with nothing but worse than when they went in.

Really helped me at my lowest. It wasn't the most fun experience but no mental hospital will be a super fun experience, haha. It's good to keep in mind it's a short term facility so you won't receive the most intensive care, but it's a good place to go if you want to hurt yourself

I, personally, did not have a good experience here. The first night, I cried for hours and no one check in on me, another patient ended up asking if I was okay and introduced me to everyone. Honestly, they were the most helpful thing from that first day. The staff took me off my medication and I was having withdrawal symptoms the entire time. I complained that I was in pain but was not helped. Some of the staff was extremely kind, mostly the clinicians that ran the groups. I would never go back here but I know that some other people I attended this hospital with had somewhat positive experiences. Be careful if you are looking into any Bournewood programs, I found it more harmful than helpful (I also went to the PHP in Lowell).

I have to give it a one start only because they would not allow me not to give them a start. I had my 16 year old over there after she threatened to self harm les then 48 hours in that hospital I received a call from Beth she told me my child was ready to come home less them 48 hours.i had several arguments with Beth and so call Doctor hart . One was about phones Don't bother filling out the paperwork on who they can and can't contact born with does not follow that. There's also no supervisions when the children are on the phone. Finally, when they discharge my child they discharged her with no medicine to a step down program. Bornward is incompetent on caring for children or an patient. I would not send my dogs there never mind my children. Also, when you do call to talk to you, your loved one there. Most likely they're going to ask if it's an employee cuz they do not know who's a patient and who's not. I would highly recommend sending them to hospital for behavioral medicine in Worcester Mass. At least there doctors actually dig to the root of the problem and do not argue with you. Beth is very unprofessional and so is Dr. Hot. All they want to do is drug up a person and send them home. I would seriously consider another facility. Anyone else except this one?

I enjoyed my stay here at Bournewood. Everyone here was so nice and it was quite fun! The staff, the other kids, the group activities, really fun! I'd say this is a great place to go to just to get away from your other situations. I found it a nice place to relax and not worry about having to deal with my family situation. I also got to learn a lot of different card games and board games. I made lots of new friends who felt like family! The only part about this I didn't exactly like was the fact that we aren't able to use our phones. Yes, I understand it is a good thing to get off of it and take a break, but it is a good source of entertainment and relaxation. It was pretty boring at times. The movies are good, but not the greatest. I still enjoyed the stay here at this hospital. I will miss all my new friends. I wish them good luck. Thank you all for making my stay worth it!

Better for your loved ones to wait in an emergency department for a bed at a better facility than go to this two-bit operation. A family member of mine was admitted to this facility and learned that this inpatient psychiatric facility does not do therapy or have social workers attending to patient needs on weekend. After an 'initial assessment' which was insufficient, my family member was allowed to languish untreated until Monday morning after a Saturday admission.

THIS IS HELL. I would not send my worse enemy here at all. This place does not care about you. There was people on the unit that were racist and they only yelled at the black people to stop being disruptive. The staff literally lost my bag that I came with and many of the staff had an attitude. Null was a worker there and she always made snarky remarks to me and another patient. The place was disgusting and there was bugs coming through the window. They do not check up on you to see how your mental is going. They send anyone home and they dont try to help you feel better at all. Krysten was very racist and only sided with the white patients and it showed by how she handled situations. The food is terrible there and it literally looks like prison food. The environment is terrible and the sensory room is terrible. there is peeling paint on every single wall and the ceiling and the wall is coming undone. to fix this problem, they have someone drilling in nails to the slats in the wall instead of getting a new wall. I genuinely think no one here cared about me because they did not make the effort to try to see what would help me while I am getting treatment in this jail like facility. Matt is another one. He always had an attitude when patient needed something and it just made the environment. Feel way worse than it already was. I don t recommend this place to anyone even though you might not have a choice, but try to get out there as soon as you can because this place was literally hell in real life. They literally told me that I have to make an appointment with my psychiatrist outside of here if I want to change my meds instead of trying to help me right there. they literally told me as long as I m safe and I have a place to go that I could go home There was no further questions on that. The groups were not the Therapeutic at all, and they did not help me at all. All I m saying is please don t go here Please save yourself.

I was threatened by another patient. I asked them to move me and they never moved me or the person who threatened me. I was also basically threatened by the staff, I was told if I didn't take their medicine I would be forced to stay there longer. Before taking the medicine they didn't even give me a release date. After I took the medicine they still didn't give me a release date for days... I was stuck there medicated without a release date... It was hell feels like prison. The only reason I give it one star is cause it's the only place in MA that still allows cigarette breaks. D1 is the best place to be.
