About Aurora Behavioral Healthcare San Diego Hospital

Aurora Behavioral Health Care is a behavioral health treatment center located in San Diego, California. They provide services for youth and adults of all ages, including inpatient and outpatient treatment programs. Specialty programs are available for military personnel, veterans, seniors, first responders, and clients with co-occurring mental health disorders. They accept private insurance, including Medicare and MediCal.

The inpatient program helps you begin recovery in a safe and supportive environment, with 24/7 support. You can participate in all of the available programs or only the ones suited to your specific needs. There are many services offered, including counseling, group sessions, and family therapy. There is a separate program for youth aged 5 to 12. The youth program includes similar therapy and education and also provides daily classroom instruction so they can keep up in school during treatment.

For those who can live at home or in sober living, you can take advantage of a variety of outpatient programs. There’s a full day program, one that meets up to 10 hours per week, and one that meets a few hours per week. You’ll get an assessment to determine the best option for you. Services in treatment are similar to inpatient care.

One aspect of this program that stands out to reviewers is their commitment to catering each treatment to fit the needs of specialty populations, including military personnel and first responders. The team recognizes that these groups deal with unique issues that aren’t as prevalent within the general population, such as combat-related PTSD. They have dedicated units to serve these clients, staffed by clinicians who are experienced in working with such groups.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient programs are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare. Aurora San Diego provides outpatient care in the form of partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient programs (IOP) for those whose acute psychiatric symptoms require a safe and therapeutic environment. They also provide intensive outpatient programs for chemical dependency and dual diagnosis that specifically address the needs of individuals in recovery from substance abuse. Their team of outpatient specialists recognize and understand the needs of patients dealing with emotional and psychological disorders and chemical dependency who are looking to continue to titrate to lower levels of care. The goal of our programs is to help individuals develop their recovery and achieve success in their lives.

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements. Aurora San Diego provides inpatient care and partial hospitalization for children ages 5-12 whose acute symptoms require a safe and therapeutic environment. They also provide inpatient care and partial hospitalization for acute mental health issues and chemical dependency intensive outpatient programs for adolescents ages 13 through 17 and adults. Their team of specialists recognize and understand the unique needs of child and adolescent patients dealing with emotional and psychological disorders and chemical dependency.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

aftercare iconAftercare

Rehab aftercare programs offer clients in addiction recovery a robust continuum of care after clients have completed active treatment. These services address recovery as a life-long process and are designed to evolve with clients' changing needs. Clients may partner with their case managers and/or addiction recovery team to identify the rehab aftercare services that are right for them. They may receive career counseling, housing assistance, peer coaching, 12 step program induction, among many other services.

12-step icon12-Step

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

Commonly known as "day treatment," a partial hospitalization program (PHP) is an intensive form of outpatient treatment where clients meet during the day and return home in the evening. PHP treatment doesn't require 24-hour care and often serves as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization or a step-down after a residential program. With PHP treatment, you can receive daily support for 6 to 8 hours which includes evidence-based therapies and medication management. The cost of PHP treatment typically varies but averages 90 days.

24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care

During the first phase of recovery – detox – it is crucial to have 24-hour clinical care in California. This care provides constant monitoring in order to ensure your safely and comfort as you progress through the withdrawal process for drug or alcohol addiction. Licensed professionals prescribe medications to treat withdrawal symptoms and provide frequent monitoring to ensure your safely as addictive toxins leave your system.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Our Policy: Aurora Behavioral Healthcare San Diego Hospital works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact us to verify your specific insurance provider.

Heart icon Treatment

alcohol iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

drugs iconDrug Addiction

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

opium iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Hand holding medical sign icon Clinical Services

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

couples-therapy iconCouples Therapy

The goal of couples therapy in California is to strengthen the couple's relationship. The therapist may take one or more approaches to counseling which may include the Gottman method, emotionally focused therapy, behavioral therapy, and psychodynamic couple's therapy.

eye-movement iconEye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

EMDR is a therapeutic modality originally developed to help process trauma. In an EMDR session, a patient is prompted to undergo eye movements that mimic those of REM sleep. This is accomplished by watching a therapist's finger move back and forth across, or following a bar of light. The goal is repetitive sets of eye movements that help the brain reprocess memory, which can significantly reduce the intensity of remembered traumatic incidents. Associated memories can heal simultaneously, leaving patients significantly calmer, more stable, and more emotionally relaxed.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Nutrition Therapy

Substances can prevent the absorption of nutrients and cause damage to your body's systems. Nutrition therapy in California addresses the deficiencies in vitamins and minerals that are caused by substance abuse.

DO NOT LET ANYONE YOU LOVE GO HERE!!! Our 21 year old son was admitted a 8 weeks ago for depression after letting us know he needed help. He is now MARRIED to one of the patients he met here, living out of his car and has no relationship with his family. He is worse off than when he started. We think he is showing manic symptoms and nobody there has seemed to notice or even care. He was discharged today despite us begging them for more help as we believe he needs different medication. They basically said there s nothing they can do for us.

I was a patient for about two weeks and had a horrible experience with staff. Staff would be visibly annoyed when I would ask them for anything. My case worker walked away when I asked for privacy when speaking about a sensitive topic, and expected me to openly talk about it in the hallway, while there were other patients walking around nearby. A nurse practitioner told me to just go home after the fact that my previous partner who I was living with physically abused me while I was there. I had nowhere to go and being told to just go back wasn t appropriate in my opinion. There was a day that I needed my laundry done and I ended up waiting all day just to find out that the laundry staff left it damp in a paper bag the whole day for some reason. They gave me an Ativan without explanation of what that medication was. A med nurse expected me to take my night medication at 8:30pm when I had until 10:45 to take it. She had asked me to go up to her because she wanted to talk and when I went up to her she was opening my medication when I clearly told her it was too early for me. She wanted me to take my medication at her own convenience. Plumbing was a huge issue while I was here and they would take days to resolve the problem. I would visibly watch maintenance staff laugh at other patients when they would stop by to fix something in a unit. I would not recommend this facility if you want to be treated in a humane way.

Went here in 2019, a nurse tried handing the wrong meds to two other people, so when he came me handing me pills and I asked what was in them, and he said he didn t know. Then rudely told me that I could take those pills or nothing for the night. I took the pills and was feeling bad, possibly from just being scared, but I wanted to call my parents and they wouldn t let me because it was after the time we could use the phone. I was 18. I also recall a social worker having a meeting with my parents, and telling them bad things I said about them in private with my doctor. This meeting was where they discussed if I was allowed to get out after three days or not. I do believe I have tried to avoid hospitalization again even in really bad times simply because of my experiences here. Please please please don t go here.

Thank you for taking the time to leave us your feedback and thoughts about your experience as a patient 11years ago as a child. Unfortunately, needing to be hospitalized at such a young age is very difficult and no one wants to be there, ever though it may be necessary. As always, Aurora San Diego Hospital strives to deliver the very best patient care possible for all ages. Thank you again for your feedback and recollections. Take care and stay safe.

I would give it zero stars if I could. I understand patient privacy but to say the patient should have called you with their id # instead ensuring that they do call since they are PATIENTS would seem to me contact on sense. Now I cannot see my wife or get her a change of clothes. My wife was here before, they stunk then and they stunk now

My son went here because he had a suicide attempt. The Dr. discharged him with no medications. We have asked for Dr's notes and they refuse to give them. My son learned nothing in groups, the doctor is out of touch and just rants about random stuff. This place is dirty and their staff has no idea how to educate children with coping strategies.
