About Aurora Behavioral Healthcare San Diego Hospital

Aurora Behavioral Health Care is a behavioral health treatment center located in San Diego, California. They provide services for youth and adults of all ages, including inpatient and outpatient treatment programs. Specialty programs are available for military personnel, veterans, seniors, first responders, and clients with co-occurring mental health disorders. They accept private insurance, including Medicare and MediCal.

The inpatient program helps you begin recovery in a safe and supportive environment, with 24/7 support. You can participate in all of the available programs or only the ones suited to your specific needs. There are many services offered, including counseling, group sessions, and family therapy. There is a separate program for youth aged 5 to 12. The youth program includes similar therapy and education and also provides daily classroom instruction so they can keep up in school during treatment.

For those who can live at home or in sober living, you can take advantage of a variety of outpatient programs. There’s a full day program, one that meets up to 10 hours per week, and one that meets a few hours per week. You’ll get an assessment to determine the best option for you. Services in treatment are similar to inpatient care.

One aspect of this program that stands out to reviewers is their commitment to catering each treatment to fit the needs of specialty populations, including military personnel and first responders. The team recognizes that these groups deal with unique issues that aren’t as prevalent within the general population, such as combat-related PTSD. They have dedicated units to serve these clients, staffed by clinicians who are experienced in working with such groups.

Overall I had a good and bad experience here. I was in the adolescent unit back in March on a 8 day hold. The food was really bad most days but they had some okay foods or snacks to keep you going. overall being isolated from the outside world and barely being able to go outside low-key drove me insane. They are super heavy on the level system which annoyed me a lot because most people aren't staying there for that long anyways unless there hold was like a week or more. I made some friends which I'm still in touch with to this day. The facility could have been cleaner not gonna lie. The showers would sometimes not work and people would have to share one shower sometimes. The nurses were super amazing to me and gave me hope of good people. The groups do teach some stuff that does help. The drug group lady was absolutely amazing I loved her and so did everybody else there she was cool asf. From what I've seen the nurses try their best to be understanding but they are human and get frustrated when other patients would have attitude, act out on them, in general just treat them like shit. which is understandable. I loved the fact I was able to call my friends and call whenever I could. I hated the fact you couldn't hang out in the hallways you could only be in your room or the group room which got tiring. I saw some crazy stuff like this girl I was besties with in the kid unit getting lifted on all limbs like an animal and getting sedated and sent to the quiet room and when she came out she had blood all over where she got injected. pretty unprofessional if you ask me. This place definitely grounds you and gives you new perspectives thanks to the kind nurses, the group therapy, the coping skills they try to teach you, the resources they remind you have, and sm more. My fav nurses were the black ones I don't remember their names I only remember Wendell he was awesome, but the rest were absolutely amazing. My doctor pissed me off not gonna lie he did help me get meds but they were only bandaids to my issues and he would go onto ramble about just random stuff idk he threw me off a lot. The treasure boxes were my fav and motivated me to get my levels up. I knew people there who would still find ways to self harm but it's not that crazy for a mental hospital. Would I come back again? Nope!! but its better than most mental health hospitals in San Diego. So if I had a choice aurora it would be.

Having to be admitted to a psychiatric hospital is not an every day event and is very stressful. Hopefully lessons will be learned and positive relationships formed. I believe we have the best staff and treatment programs in San Diego. If further hospitalizations are needed, we are always there.

Accepted Insurance

Aurora Behavioral Healthcare San Diego Hospital works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient programs are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare. Aurora San Diego provides outpatient care in the form of partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient programs (IOP) for those whose acute psychiatric symptoms require a safe and therapeutic environment. They also provide intensive outpatient programs for chemical dependency and dual diagnosis that specifically address the needs of individuals in recovery from substance abuse. Their team of outpatient specialists recognize and understand the needs of patients dealing with emotional and psychological disorders and chemical dependency who are looking to continue to titrate to lower levels of care. The goal of our programs is to help individuals develop their recovery and achieve success in their lives.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements. Aurora San Diego provides inpatient care and partial hospitalization for children ages 5-12 whose acute symptoms require a safe and therapeutic environment. They also provide inpatient care and partial hospitalization for acute mental health issues and chemical dependency intensive outpatient programs for adolescents ages 13 through 17 and adults. Their team of specialists recognize and understand the unique needs of child and adolescent patients dealing with emotional and psychological disorders and chemical dependency.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Rehab aftercare programs offer clients in addiction recovery a robust continuum of care after clients have completed active treatment. These services address recovery as a life-long process and are designed to evolve with clients' changing needs. Clients may partner with their case managers and/or addiction recovery team to identify the rehab aftercare services that are right for them. They may receive career counseling, housing assistance, peer coaching, 12 step program induction, among many other services.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
Commonly known as "day treatment," a partial hospitalization program (PHP) is an intensive form of outpatient treatment where clients meet during the day and return home in the evening. PHP treatment doesn't require 24-hour care and often serves as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization or a step-down after a residential program. With PHP treatment, you can receive daily support for 6 to 8 hours which includes evidence-based therapies and medication management. The cost of PHP treatment typically varies but averages 90 days.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
During the first phase of recovery – detox – it is crucial to have 24-hour clinical care in California. This care provides constant monitoring in order to ensure your safely and comfort as you progress through the withdrawal process for drug or alcohol addiction. Licensed professionals prescribe medications to treat withdrawal symptoms and provide frequent monitoring to ensure your safely as addictive toxins leave your system.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

The goal of couples therapy in California is to strengthen the couple's relationship. The therapist may take one or more approaches to counseling which may include the Gottman method, emotionally focused therapy, behavioral therapy, and psychodynamic couple's therapy.

EMDR is a therapeutic modality originally developed to help process trauma. In an EMDR session, a patient is prompted to undergo eye movements that mimic those of REM sleep. This is accomplished by watching a therapist's finger move back and forth across, or following a bar of light. The goal is repetitive sets of eye movements that help the brain reprocess memory, which can significantly reduce the intensity of remembered traumatic incidents. Associated memories can heal simultaneously, leaving patients significantly calmer, more stable, and more emotionally relaxed.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Substances can prevent the absorption of nutrients and cause damage to your body's systems. Nutrition therapy in California addresses the deficiencies in vitamins and minerals that are caused by substance abuse.

DO NOT LET ANYONE YOU LOVE GO HERE!!! Our son was admitted for depression after letting us know he needed help. He got married to one of the patients he met there after 3 weeks of meeting her and is still struggling. We think he is showing manic symptoms and nobody there has seemed to notice or even care. He was discharged today despite us begging them for more help as we believe he needs different medication. They basically said there s nothing they can do for us.

So my son was transferred here and stayed 3 days. All The staff I spoke with were competent and very professional. They worked with me to find the best possible plan for my son. However, my son said the place was dirty as hell and run down. They also make you visit in the hallway with little baby chairs. I thought that was weird and cheap. We pay massive amounts of money for Kaiser every month and this place should be a Hilton. He said the food was also terrible. I knew he wasn't lying about the cleanliness because he came home with a contagious rash all over his body!! Can they not at least have the patients clean their rooms if they won't?? 5 stars for the staff, 1 star for accommodations.

ok so I ve been here like 3 times on the adolescent unit. It s pretty trash. I recommend going to sharp if you HAVE to go somewhere. Let s start with some cons. Once I had a panic attack when I first got there as a symptom of a medical issue, they literally did nothing but get me tea and sent me to bed. This happened a couple times were I was thrown in the quite room literally just blue walls, giant camera at the top right above u and a bed with the worst blanket and pillow ever with a 1 to 1 watching my EVERY MOVE while also wearing a green gown cause I was on clothes restriction ( you get your clothes taken and have to wear that or paper) I ve seen some crazy shit there from others but mostly just little kids getting tackled by staff.you get to go out like once a week.food is bad but not the worst hospital food I ve had. There so big on the level system but I just think it s stupid cause your only gonna be there for so long. pros some staff are hella funny, some kinda cute and I mean you can call like most of the time. Pretty traumatic ngl. Shout out to homegirl Lydia, the substance counselor who is a girl boss.
