About Verdugo Hills Hospital – Outpatient Services

Verdugo Hills Hospital outpatient services offers private mental health treatment to adults ages 50 and up in Glendale, California. They are a part of Keck Medicine of the USC hospital network and focus on helping seniors with behavioral health problems and addictions to alcohol and drugs. They accept Medicare and Medicaid.

A great thing about this clinic is that it offers a broad continuum of care to seniors. They treat the patient as a whole person when giving care to geriatric people in their outpatient behavioral program. They can utilize the full spectrum of care to treat addiction with medication. They also provide group therapy and individual psychotherapy.

Their facility includes a community center for aging where seniors can gain access to a wide network of broader senior services specifically designed for the elderly. They understand the aging process and how maintaining valuable life skills helps patients learn and maintain their independence. They offer patients assistance with overcoming trauma, as well as diet planning and exercise strategies.

Patients have mixed opinions about the facility, but they do praise the kindness of the staff.

I came in alone with my toddler once who had a Lego stuck up his nose which was all bloody which gave me a heart attack at the time, and the line was long at that time. The care was mediocre at best. They did get him seen within 2 hours or so but I thought that was still too long compared to my second time. My mom was with me at the time to help so it was easier to bear. The other time I came in through ambulance after having non stop diarrhea with COVID like flu symptoms (eg sore throat, fever, chills, headache, vomiting, congestion, coughing) and I was concerned it was something more serious. They were helpful and responsive, had people who weren t medical to check on any needs (like an extra blanket, or getting a nurse s attention which helped so much. The nurse who did my IV was fumbling a bit and a little bit cold, but the other two nurses who helped me really made up for that. One thing I will say is, there were some really long wait times which I didn t mind because I needed the two bags of IV drips after being so dehydrated but I did see some negligence with the pulling the cord for nurse thing being reset which wasn t reset so if I was a patient who was even worse off, I couldn t have gotten the nurse s attention again.

Waited 7 hours with my loved one experiencing pretty severe abdominal pain and blood in their stool. They had been without food for almost 12 hours, since we went to the ER just before lunch, and they weren't allowed to eat. We just had to leave cause on multiple occasions we had been told "soon" but were never seen and they were becoming increasingly nauseous and weak from pain + lack of food. They already went to the ER earlier in the week for, less severe, abdominal pain and was diagnosed with a UTI despite it VERY very unlikely.I have a lot of compassion for the folks working and being admitted into the ER. I understand letting children, elderly, and open wounds etc.. be seen first. But it's ridiculous to see 15 people in the room with you be seen first and then being told AFTER that there were still about 15 people ahead of/waiting with you because the waiting room filled up again. The front desk seemed glad to discharge us.Go to a different ER.

Accepted Insurance

Our Policy: Verdugo Hills Hospital – Outpatient Services works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact us to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.
hearing-impaired-program thumbnail image
Hearing Impaired Program
A sensory disability, such as hearing impairment, can compound the challenges of addiction recovery. Drug rehabs that are specially designed to accommodate the needs of persons with hearing impairments will include special accessibility features and accommodations to make treatment as comfortable and effective as possible. This may include access to American Sign Language interpreters.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

I came into the ER today as my ear drum had ripped and was bleeding. I ended up waiting exactly 7 hours to even be takin in. Yes, 7 HOURS!! Front desk was unprofessional, rude, and couldn t care less, reasoning for wait was there are no rooms (for 7 hrs) Front desk Heidi (1st picture) told me to shut up after asking what the wait time looked like for the 3rd time as I was in pain and proceeded to bring one of the nurses Lesley (2nd picture) who told me I could leave whenever I wanted if I wasn t happy waiting. Although the team INSIDE is outstanding, you d find better customer service skills from employees at McDonalds rather than the front desk here. If you re ever in any emergency, this is not the place for you. Only reason I waited that long was due to the fact I had already been waiting and didn t want to lose my turn. Front desk Heidi should really reconsider working elsewhere as she clearly does not like her job or assisting patients in need. Horrible experience.

I've been at the ER for over 4 hours. I seem to be on hold. This is the worst organized ER I've been to since the 1970s. I work in the healthcare field and I advise many medical groups and hospitals and I cannot imagine why this hospital is so poorly organized when it comes to the ER.

I went to USC Verdugo Hills for an MRl.I had been there a couple of years ago, but never to the Radiology Dept.My appt was 6:30 in the evening, and I arrived about a half hour early. There weren t many people there, and the first bldg turned out to be the medical offices, not the hospital. So I walked to the next bldg, which was the hospital, but the doors were locked and there was an intercom at the entrance. As I was about to call for help, a very nice young lady named Bridget was leaving, and she asked me if I needed directions.I said yes, and then she kindly took me up to the Radiology Dept Reception area. And she took the time to do this for me as she was off duty and heading for home! She said she worked in the Patient Experience Dept., and I have to say I had a very positive experience!I also have to give a shout out to Angie at Reception, and Gayan and Rudy, who did the MRI. All were totally professional, courteous and professional. My procedure turned out to be stress- free and a piece of cake.My advice: Don t go anywhere else for your MRI.

I truly cannot believe my experience this evening there were people waiting since 5 PM that had not been seen by 2 AM. Yeah, drug addicts walk in and get seen before everyone else. I was not seen and now I have to go to work in the morning having lost sleep and in pain because I did not get the help I needed. Here s a thought, Hire more staff!!!!

Response from the owner2 months ago

Took my father to the ER yesterday. Our experience was far below the standards of care and professionalism one would expect from a USC facility. After waiting for 9 hours without proper attention or care, it became clear that the staff's behavior was unprofessional and lacked basic compassion.Despite my repeated requests for my father's anti-rejection medication and assistance, the nursing staff were unresponsive and often rude.It was extremely disheartening to see them more focused on their phones than on patient care. One nurse appeared completely disorganized while inserting the IV making a bloody mess & not bothering to clean it after. The doctors showed no bedside manner. At 10 PM, we were informed that my father would be admitted, but by 3 AM, we were told that the bed request hadn't even been submitted, and it would take an additional 4-5 hours. This delay, coupled with the lack of communication and empathy, was unacceptable. To make matters worse, my father was placed on a monitor, and the leads kept disconnecting. The monitor eventually flatlined, and not once did anyone come to check on him.It is terrifying to think about what could have happened if he had been alone and in real distress. Furthermore, his diabetic & not once did they give him insulin while his sugar was at 350. In fact, they did not even bring up his results. We ultimately decided to leave, not because of the long wait for a bed, as the doctor stated on his note, but because of the gross negligence and the apparent lack of concern for my father's well-being.Patients deserve better care.Verdugo Hills does not embody the Keck culture, and I am deeply disappointed. This experience has shattered our trust in this facility and has raised serious concerns about patient safety and care standards.

I took my dad to verdugo hill s hospital and when we got there I filled out a form saying that we were concerned that he had pneumonia. He waited in a hospital bed for two and a half hours. A nurse named Periscilla dealt with us and was rude, combative and thought we were wasting her time. They swabed his nose to check for viruses and monitored his heart, they never gave him an x-ray to check for pneumonia. They told us that he was fine and we left. A few days later he worsened and came close to death. We went to urgent care and they gave him an x-ray and found out he had pneumonia and they saved his life.

Just go to Huntington Memorial Hospital don't waste your time here. The ER MD's, PA's and NP's couldn't care less about your care. Just decide if you want your time wasted as well as being humiliated with absolutely no care or go to Huntington Memorial will actually care l, compassion and help. I've never met a more arrogant Physician in my life with no bed side manor and uncuntfortable capabilities during my stay. I was trying to get help but I got the back hand of the employees basically slapped my face and justified it.

Response from the owner2 months ago

The MRI staff were completely unresponsive. They were running 40 minutes behind and ignored my request for a timing update. The staff was clearly too busy chatting to respond. Oddly rude.
