About Portage Path Behavioral Health

Portage Path is a nonprofit mental health center operating since 1971. They have several locations in the Ohio area including the Barberton location. They help area residents with substance use and mental illness issues. They also offer 24/7 emergency psychiatric services. They’re accredited by the Joint Commission.

The center offers crisis stabilization, psychiatry and case management. Case managers can help you navigate the courts and government services and help you find affordable housing. They also have medication assisted treatment (MAT) for detox. They have primary care services and an onsite pharmacy.

If you’re worried about payment, they accept insurance. They’re also funded through the Summit Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board. Private donors also help pick up the costs of treatment.

There’s a special program called Bridges that’s specifically for those with a dual diagnosis. The program combines care for both of your issues into one plan to help you progress faster and avoid relapsing. They offer individual and group therapy.

Crossroads is an intensive outpatient program that is appropriate if you need more intensive treatment than a regular outpatient program but less than inpatient care. In Crossroads, you’ll have a structured environment. You’ll work on learning self reliance and building better problem solving skills. You can join an aftercare program when you complete Crossroads.

While some clients were unhappy with the administrative staff and some of the doctors, former clients had great things to say about the therapy staff.

Unlike other reviews, I ve never had any problems with them getting back to me. My counselor just left and I couldn t get into a new one for a couple months so that was a bummer. I went to a different psychiatrist at first and he was ok but then I felt like he wasn t listening to me since my meds consistently weren t working. But then I switched to another psych/dr and she is wonderful. She s works with me, listens to me, and helped me understand my problem more. She also has managed to find the right medicines for me and that has never happened. I actually feel like myself again, so thank you.

Location

Accepted Insurance

Portage Path Behavioral Health works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Clients who have just completed detox or who are at an increased risk of relapse, such as those experiencing a life crisis, typically enroll in an inpatient rehab. There, they receive housing, meals, and intensive clinical supervision. Inpatient treatment typically involves extensive individual, group, and family therapy. Clients may also participate in life skills training to support their long-term sobriety. Integrative rehab centers offer a variety of evidence-based holistic therapies, such as meditation or equine therapy.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
During initial recovery, withdrawal from alcohol, opiates, and benzodiazepines can involve high health risk. Attempting detox outside of 24-hour clinical care in Ohio is not recommended. This can be life-threatening because medical staff are not available to treat severe symptoms of withdrawal that often occur. Such symptoms can include seizures, delirium tremens, and extreme dehydration. In a clinical setting, staff are on-site to immediately care for your physical, emotional, and mental health needs.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.
hearing-impaired-program thumbnail image
Hearing Impaired Program
A sensory disability, such as hearing impairment, can compound the challenges of addiction recovery. Drug rehabs that are specially designed to accommodate the needs of persons with hearing impairments will include special accessibility features and accommodations to make treatment as comfortable and effective as possible. This may include access to American Sign Language interpreters.
hiv-aids-program thumbnail image
HIV/AIDS Program
HIV/AIDS programs support disease prevention and management in high-risk individuals in recovery. Individuals who engage in intravenous drug use and other addictive behaviors are at a higher risk of becoming infected with HIV. Rehab centers that specialize in treating this population typically have a high number of nurses, physicians, and psychiatrists on staff who can make sure both their medical and mental health needs are met.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

5 voicemails later and not even a call back. My medication has not been refilled nor can I get anyone to pick up or call me back. My therapist is amazing but the office itself is absolutely terrible. As a medical professional myself this place should be embarrassed on the way they handle their patients

The most uncaring group of people. I ve been going to this location for around three years. My most recent therapist started the process of a new diagnosis, sent me for testing by my primary care physician, which was done and sent to her office in February. I followed up six times in five months and the practitioner I had been seeing, Tonya Gessler, never returned a single phone call. I finally asked to be transferred to a new doctor. When I went to this new doctor today, Mansoor Elahi, He informed me that no information for this new diagnosis had been recorded. He was incredibly rude and refused to listen to me. He treated me as if I was there just to push for medication I didn t need. He insisted that I was sent for the medical testing as a routine process, yet claimed that he did not know what my previous practitioner had done. He tried to give me a treatment I had already tried before that did not work. He told me that I was being argumentative, and that he was trying to help me, yet he repeatedly asked me the same questions because he was not listening. Apparently trying to get your practitioner to understand that you re in in your crisis is being argumentative. He did not even try to continue down the same path that I ve been working for the last nine months, even though he can see that I ve had the same complaint for the three years I ve been going to this location. In the end, he did not even refill my medication when it s past due and tried to get them to schedule me in another four weeks time, which would have put me entirely out of medication for a significant timeframe. This type of behavior is exactly why people turn to alternative methods to treat their mental health, because they are not believed when there is clear evidence of an issue.Steer clear from this office if you re able. They are not responsive and calloused to people with real problems.

If I could give this place no stars I would. Absolutely horrible. The psychiatrist are worthless. One told me I'm too young to feel the way am. So changed to a different one and that one didn't even have there paper work in order and didn't know who I was let alone was running behind and only got a 5 minute session, to only tell me to look on YouTube to find coping skills to help with my anxiety. Then they keep charging me for sessions I didn't even came to. Find a different place asap!

AVOID HERE!!! They will call you and cancel with no warning for no reason, then tell you that they will "call you when they can". They can't schedule you for more than once a month even when you have severe depression and bad thoughts

Have called them numerous times and left several messages have not received a phone call back call today and the scheduler finally answered and I was in the middle of giving her information and she hung up on me and was not very pleasant Not a very good way to start off making somebody feel comfortable It s already hard enough to talk to somebody let alone have somebody be rude and disrespectful when you re trying to schedule an appointment to get the help that you need I have heard good things about them but I ve also heard that the scheduler is not very professional
