I feel like people often forget that you have to put in the work for your recovery. And it has changed over the years. The staff is there for you if you need help, you can check in with them if you need help. There are one on one sessions and family therapy. Theres group therapy and community service. There are many types of therapy. All of the patients that I saw were very nice and welcoming, and excited to see a new kid. Not to mention very supportive. The food is great and theres vegetarian options and always the option for a sandwich or leftovers. This review comes from my experience here. I was there for 36 days and enjoyed my stay.

First of all, I have been waiting for this day for 2 months to pick my son up when HE was ready and that day was today. Second, I have been waiting to write this review. It's soo sad to go thru some of the reviews and see the hatred and negativity, but everyone has their own perception of their journey. I am a mother to a 15 year old boy who entered that home almost 2 months ago with severe depression, anxiety and self harm ( self harming 7 days a week).... scariest feeling to drop your kid off and walk away and know that it's in Gods hands and the staff at Discovery. If I could rate this place higher than 5 stars I would. The journey was not perfect, I was frustrated at some of the staff here and there, but I had to take a step back and accept the process as to why I sent him there in the first place. Evan the program director was soooo nice and soooo welcoming . Chris Myrick was my son's therapist and our family therapist . He is on his game , he has a job to do, and that is to help your child get to the next level of their treatment... he helped not just my son but ME personally. Just overall I am so blessed for this place and the staff. Nothing bad to say even during some struggles Inside the home .

Hi all,I am a two-time CFD alumni and I feel called to write this review. I am 23 years old. I attended CFD 6 years ago at Pacific Place. I was 14 years old the first time I attended and 16 years old the second time. I was placed here after a suicide attempt. I believe it is important for parents to know the extent of the damage that can be done here and in the surrounding culture. The first major thing a parent should know is that CFD WILL take your kids to meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous everyday. These meetings are actually treated like a privilege, which looking back, is insane. No child should be sent to Alcoholics Anonymous. Traumatized children need therapy, and while CFD does offer that, I can tell you that the thing that was stressed the most is the AA way of life. They utilize the outdated and heavily debated disease model that AA created in 1935. You can get the same results that CFD offers by simply taking your kid to AA meetings for free.Secondly, almost every single staff member here has no qualifications other than working the 12-steps. Unfortunately, this is very common in most treatment centers, whether they "specialize" in adolescents or not.Additionally, at least at the time I went, we were allowed to go to YPAA dances while at the facility. While, sure, there is no drugs or alcohol allowed at these events, there sure is a lot of sex with minors, cigarette addictions and passing of contraband, and exposure to felons and criminals. (Nothing wrong with felons and criminals, but children should not be around them until they can be rehabilitated.)The last thing I want to say is about the alumni meeting that happens every week where the parents are upstairs and the kids are downstairs. This meeting is nothing but the organizers controlling vulnerable parents who just want to help their kids. They will try to get you into Al-Anon (another 12 step program not based in science) and they will constantly shame you if you do not want to be a part of this group. They will say that you don't want to do what it takes to help your kid. My own mother became a victim of this mindset. Luckily through individualized therapy, we have both recovered from our Substance Use Disorders and our relationship is better than ever. Shaming parents and kids does not work in the long run and that is all these 12-steppers know how to do.I sincerely hope this review helps a parent make the right decision for their child. I suggest individualized and PRIVATE therapy for both the parents and the child who is struggling.

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) support a client's sustained sobriety as they exit detox or step down from an inpatient program. IOPs are also designed for clients who are at an elevated risk of relapse. Intensive outpatient treatment typically requires clients to engage in a minimum of nine hours of therapy per week, but clients may receive up to 20 therapeutic hours weekly. IOP treatment modalities often combine psychotherapy, recovery-focused life skills training, and medication assisted treatment (MAT).
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don’t require 24-hour care. PHPs have structured programming (i.e. individual and/or group therapy), and usually meet 3-5 days a week for around 6 hours (i.e. 9am-3m). Some PHPs are residential (patients sleep on site) and some are not, so patients sleep at home. PHPs can last from 1-6 months, and some offer transportation and meals.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.

Clinical Services

Cognitive behavioral therapy in California is a method that therapists often use for the effective treatment of substance use disorders. It is based on the principle that substance abuse stems from unhelpful ways of thinking and patterns of behavior, which can be changed by helping the individual learn better ways of coping.

While participating in dialectical behavior therapy in California, you'll focus on four key areas of skill development: mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance. Treatment includes weekly individual and group sessions.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

They are not helpful at all with insurance verification! I was told several times they don t take my daughters insurance even after I contacted my daughters insurance myself and was told they do because they are a Tri-Care facility! They are very rude about it and no help what so ever! I even asked if I could do a three way call to the insurance company and just kept getting told by Courtney that my supervisor says we don t take that insurance. Sounds like they lack knowledge in insurance verification and possibly because they would have to do a little bit of paper work for a prior authorization it is just easier to say we don t take it. They aren t out to help people in need! I will never recommend this facility to anyone in need!

My kid did well and I think the therapeutic approach to addiction helped. Of course the jury is still out, but I am hopeful. As a parent I have learned a lot on the area of respect.

Changed my life in an amazing way. The leaders are who made the biggest impact on me personally. I read some of these reviews and yes people can do nothing but that's only by their own choices. Nobody can make someone sober they have to choose to do it themselves.

I read the previous review and I am sad that those experiences were had but I have to admit I am a bit confused. In our experience, everything that is brought in for the client/patient is given to the counselor and either they or other employees go through it before it is released to the person it is intended for. We had some of our items rejected as they were not allowed. We didn't even think about an iPod having a video taking capability. Needless to say it was returned to us and our child was not allowed to use it. As far as lounging around.. Yes, kids can lounge around, do nothing and not complete work and in turn they have no privileges as far as personal music, longer visiting time, outside pass, etc. to name a few. They can't MAKE them do anything however they do not encourage this behavior by rewarding them either. If they don't want to do anything, they won't. Period. That goes with anyone with anything. The hope is they will want to work toward recovery and getting out of CFD or at least work toward some of the freedoms they have lost and would like to have back. They each have household chores to do and they rotate so I also thought it was great to teach them responsibility as well.As far as drugs and again very confused. As I said previously, everything we brought in for our child was gone through thoroughly before it was given to him. I am not sure how items were brought in or how that worked and it saddens me that it was the case with the above. The law in California does not allow a lock down facility. That means they are allowed to leave at any time however consequences also follow. Also, it could be possible that someone visiting could choose to bring items that are detrimental to their recovery or health that is again something that CFD can't control. I guess ultimately, unless someone takes accountability with their actions, it won t matter. As far as our personal experience at Center for Discovery in Long Beach, as you can imagine, words cannot describe how one feels when they have to place their child in a rehab facility. Regardless of whether or not you feel like your child needs it or not, it is heart breaking. Tears and tears and tears.... No matter how hard you try to convince yourself you are doing the right thing, you are still at a loss and second, third, fourth and fifth guessing of yourself. We knew we were doing the right thing and we were very very happy with the facility, employees and the help that was received there. Not for only our child but for our family as a whole. Regardless of what one believes, it is NOT just the child s issue, it is a FAMILY issue and it is imperative that it is dealt with that way or success is much less likely. In our child's case, we also had issues that needed to be dealt with in regard to school and they went ABOVE and BEYOND to ensure that our child's school career wouldn't be effected and had a seamless transition. Alicia was a LIFESAVER!We really learned a lot about each other, our family dynamic, what we need to work on and what we need to change. We are all forever works in progress. This program was a true lifesaver on so many levels. As our therapist Peter said he hopes to not see us again. I felt like we had an extended family there. We really felt like people cared and we weren't alone. Being in this situation is really difficult and many people don't talk about it because of that. Their family group meetings are the best and really appreciated the kids input as well as other parents going through the same thing. We really had a good experience and because our child went to CFD, we have a much higher chance of Peter's wish of us not having to come back coming true. Ultimately though, its our child's work and actions that will dictate that.Thank you CFD (Center for Discovery) and most of all Peter for helping our family become healthier, happier and most of all... start to put it back together to make it even better than before. There aren't enough words to express our gratitude. <3 <3 <3

We sent our son to the Long Beach location of The Center for Discovery for addiction and depression in November/December 2012. His condition worsened in the facility. We had a terrible experience and did not make ANY progress towards a healthy life. Kids were sneaking out of the facility, sneaking in drugs and cigarettes, making-out in bathrooms, lounging around in their pajamas all day, not doing their school work or treatment work, etc. The teens were basically on vacation and being enabled in their efforts to not make any changes in their lives. While the staff has good intentions, not one person there is capable of leading a successful program, the staff is not educated enough in rehabilitation, psychology or management to influence unmotivated teens. They do not encourage the teens to heal or work towards anything, they simply keep them in a place where they "think" the teens will not be able to use drugs or drink. Center for Discovery is a holding place to keep your child until you find a more permanent solution, it is not a solution.
