About Center for Discovery – La Habra

Center for Discovery specializes in comprehensive care for eating disorders, mental health, and dual diagnosis. This La Habra, California, behavioral health clinic welcomes adolescents and children aged 10 to 18. You can live in their residential facility as you learn coping skills and heal.

Their luxurious campus provides a tranquil space to nourish yourself and reach recovery. After a thorough assessment, you’ll have access to exposure & response prevention, cognitive behavioral therapy, and dialectical behavior therapy. They ensure your treatment accounts for your unique situation.

One thing that stands out to me about this facility is they treat co-occurring disorders simultaneously. Many people with eating disorders also struggle with mental health conditions or addiction. They focus on healing you wholly, incorporating proven and experiential therapies into treatment.

I also love that this program is specifically for children and adolescents. Their empathetic team is specially trained to offer support and encouragement for the unique life challenges that come with this population.

And, they understand that family therapy and support are essential for effective treatment. You’ll strengthen relationships with your loved ones as you learn how to address and cope with your experiences together.

Previous clients expressed mixed feelings. Some people felt attending their program was a transformational experience. Others reported feeling unseen and a lack of staff proficiency. Generally, finding the best care for you requires putting your needs and preferences at the forefront. Always remember this when searching for a treatment program.

This place is horrible. The staff made many of the patients feel so humiliated to the point where it felt like bullying. If some of the staff members didn't prefer a certain patient, you could definitely tell. This place felt like hell on earth. I felt uncomfortable and scared at all times. The staff LOVE to make accusations towards the patients. You must always watch what you do because it might be taken the wrong way and they will extend your stay there. That was a constant fear of mine and many other patients. This place did more damage to me than good. You can't make some recover by using fear against them. We were rarely able to go outside and were constantly stuck in one room all day. The staff were so easily annoyed by everything. The only thing that got me through my time there was the other patients. But even at that, it was very triggering to be stuck in a house full of people with their own eating disorders. Im not sure who thought it would be a good idea to put a bunch of mentally ill patients in one house together. This gave so many opportunities for comparison and new eating disorder behaviors forming because of the impact of others actions.

I observed my sister's engagement with the facility, and as a result, she has made progress. However, I must express concerns about the therapeutic staff's proficiency, particularly noting the therapist's apparent lack of experience, having recently transitioned from a shadowing role. The family therapy sessions were consistently chaotic, demonstrating a deficiency in the therapist's ability to manage and de-escalate situations effectively. Given the vulnerable nature of teenage minds, it is reasonable to expect a team of seasoned professionals. Regrettably, the experience at this facility exacerbated rather than alleviated my sister's trauma. My critique is directed more towards the management's questionable judgment in the hiring process than the individual therapist involved.

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don’t require 24-hour care. PHPs have structured programming (i.e. individual and/or group therapy), and usually meet 3-5 days a week for around 6 hours (i.e. 9am-3m). Some PHPs are residential (patients sleep on site) and some are not, so patients sleep at home. PHPs can last from 1-6 months, and some offer transportation and meals.

Treatments

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
child-program thumbnail image
Child Program
The providers who specialize in the children's rehab space understand the specialized needs that this population faces. School-based and social services such as tutoring and family counseling are often central to treatment. Child programs may also address the needs of youth experiencing substance abuse in the home, including a parent's or sibling's addiction.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and dysfunctional eating patterns. Many psychologists and other mental health professionals consider eating disorders to be food addictions, meaning food is being used in an addictive way (similar to drug or alcohol addiction). Certain substance abuse treatment programs will have treatment for eating disorders as one of the services offered. An eating disorder may also present as a co-occuring disorder or dual diagnosis alongside drug and alcohol addiction.

EMDR is a therapeutic modality originally developed to help process trauma. In an EMDR session, a patient is prompted to undergo eye movements that mimic those of REM sleep. This is accomplished by watching a therapist's finger move back and forth across, or following a bar of light. The goal is repetitive sets of eye movements that help the brain reprocess memory, which can significantly reduce the intensity of remembered traumatic incidents. Associated memories can heal simultaneously, leaving patients significantly calmer, more stable, and more emotionally relaxed.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

this place was literally a hell hole in itself. Trauma literally TRAUMA. things that shouldn t even be happening at and EATING DISORDER TREATMENT. i m absolutely astonished with how much they tried to make it seem like a recovery wonderland. they take absolutely nobody seriously, patients crying and begging for help and all they would do is look. NOT EVEN CHECK IN. i m purely and utterly sure they would hire ANYONE. Some diet techs didn t even know how to CHECK FOOD!!! only a good handful of staff were angels. Do NOT recommend la habra

Here at La Habra CFD, I made friendships with staff, treatment team, and patients that I will remember for the rest of my life. CFD taught me that I no longer had to survive. That for once I could learn how to live. That I could get through my PTSD, learn self compassion and use it on my hardest of days. And most of all? That recovery is really hard, but suffering in silence, is so much harder. Thank you La Habra CFD for all you did for me. Words cannot explain, how much I changed since the first step I took into your front door. Thank you.
