I had high hopes for Cenikor, I have heard a lot of good things about their facilities and their program. Maybe it's because I had such lofty expectations that I was so utterly disappointed. A majority of the staff seems jaded and a few were downright unprofessional - overheard more employees expressing annoyance towards certain clients (and sometimes even talking negatively about clients TO other clients) than anything positive and/or uplifting. Some of the BHTs seem to relish in their "authority" over the "inmates," almost like prison. My personal experience was muddied by the way I was handled during a psychotic breakdown brought on by my detox conditions. I was severely dehydrated and practically starving (who LOSES weight in rehab?), which no doubt contributed to my poor mental health and was neglected or unnoticed by staff until the moment the ambulance arrived to take me to the hospital for "evaluation." I assume most addicts also suffer from mental illness (in fact, addiction is classified as a disease of the mind) and the approach Cenikor seems to have is not of kindness or concern, but coldly and quietly ridding their building of you and therefore opening up a bed for the next poor soul and shipping you off to the state hospital for the mentally unstable. The hospital didn't consider me a danger to myself or anyone else, so I was immediately discharged. Then had to find and fund my own way back to Cenikor. By the time I got back, the office staff were gone. Even though I was never formally discharged from the facility, I was not allowed back in. I had to pay for a very expensive Uber ride back to Dallas that evening. The WORST part of my entire experience here was after I got home and in desperate need of medication (I'm on a MAT program), Cenikor left me hanging high and dry - no one would even return my phone calls. I think Cenikor needs to focus more on the human beings in their care rather than making sure there's a constant rotation of warm bodies to fill beds.

Hi Lindsey, thank you for sharing this with us, and we're sorry we did not live up to your expectations. Sometimes a higher level of care is needed to keep everyone safe. You're right, co-occurring disorders are common among people with substance use disorder, but if someone is primary mental health, they require different treatment. If you'd like to talk further, please email marketing@cenikor.org and we'll get you over to someone from our leadership team. Thanks!

Accepted Insurance

Cenikor Foundation – Tyler works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Rehab aftercare programs are based on a model of continuing care and the premise that recovery is a life-long process requiring ongoing client support. Many rehab aftercare services include outpatient care, but clients often continue to receive support after being discharged from formal treatment. Case managers and care teams typically collaborate with clients to design their long-term care plan, which may include peer coaching, career counseling, and 12 step program induction, among other services.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
sober-living iconSober Living Homes
Residents of a sober living home in Texas reside at the halfway house with others who have agreed to abstain from substances and practice sober-living skills. The relationships and accountability formed here can help individuals strengthen their mental health and achieve long-term recovery. Residents share common spaces such as kitchens and back yards, share meals together, and share household responsibilities such as cooking and cleaning.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Cenikor provides inpatient medically-assisted detox and stabilization for adult clients going through the active withdrawal symptoms associated with a recent substance use disorder. Services include individualized medication protocols and individual counseling.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

During rehab in Texas, you'll deal with underlying issues that contribute to addiction. By addressing these challenges and learning healthy ways to cope with them, you'll develop strategies that help you live a drug-free lifestyle.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.
hiv-aids-program thumbnail image
HIV/AIDS Program
HIV/AIDS programs support disease prevention and management in high-risk individuals in recovery. Individuals who engage in intravenous drug use and other addictive behaviors are at a higher risk of becoming infected with HIV. Rehab centers that specialize in treating this population typically have a high number of nurses, physicians, and psychiatrists on staff who can make sure both their medical and mental health needs are met.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

The goal of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in Texas is to change thought patterns, which leads to changes in behavior. Specific techniques during CBT can include self talk, SMART goals, journaling, and positive activities.

Treatment that takes a dialectical behavior therapy approach focuses on four strategies. Distress tolerance will help you accept and tolerate intense emotions. Emotional regulation will teach you to manage those emotions. Mindfulness will keep you in the present moment instead of regret or worry. Interpersonal effectiveness will teach you to manage your relationships.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Therapy sessions that incorporate motivational interviewing focus on OARS: open questions, affirmation, reflections, and summarizing. This facilitates an exchange of information and an empowering of the client to decide for themselves what changes might need to be made in their lives.

Together with an experienced trauma therapist, you work on healing emotional wounds from traumatic experiences within a trauma therapy environment. Your therapist will help you process the experience of the trauma, which promotes emotional healing and improves your overall mental health.

Couples therapy helps couples learn to control emotions, trust each other, and communicate more effectively. It can be useful for short term intervention for a specific issue or for working on the relationship long term.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

My stay at Cenikor started out great and I was hopeful that I had finally found a treatment center that would work for me. My fellow inmates, uh, I mean patients were great. The regular staff we saw on a daily basis were also fantastic (special shout out to the kitchen manager, Ms. Shaun). As for the administrative staff and a majority of the nurses I dealt with, they left a bad taste in my mouth. Constant confusion with medication (not a good thing ever anywhere) and I honestly should've left my second day when the head nurse showed up late (2 hours past dispensation time) and I realized how absent-minded she was. That's not an endearing trait in medical professionals. The administrative staff were cold and seemed not to really care about the recovery aspect of their whole organization. I actually overheard one front office lady say something like "That's not my job, I'm just here to take your money." Misinformation and disinformation runs rampant here. I wouldn't be surprised if they are one day shut down due to multiple HIPPA violations. Not to mention the dirty rooms with "booger walls," the scrubs are heavily stained with vomit and other bodily fluids, and I never noticed any sort of sanitation practices at all. I had high hopes for Cenikor and was disappointed to see it's just like every other state-funded facility, more interested in filling beds for the insurance money than actually focusing on recovery and the still suffering addicts lying in them.

I just graduated this program and I must say thank you Cinekor for saving my life! I was very sick and went through detox and then residential. The community was warm, we were able to go out to meetings several times a week, and they fed us well even grilling outside on occasion! Thank you Cinekor!

Cenikor adult center in tyler tx is definitely NOT the place it betrays itself to be. From the intake assessment to treatment. Please find another place for your family or loved ones. My dear friend has been battling alcoholism for many years. He is disabled with a few handicaps that Cenikor was very well aware of. They advertise to have a "medical detox" but this is not so. They could not handle the responsibility of taking care of my friend thru detoxing. I will not go through the whole neglecting that took place because we have obtained an attorney...that's how bad it was...one thing I will tell you is that the staff said to us if we didn't come get him ..that he would sit in his own poop and urine until we did! And this was a director. Sad thing is not only the neglect..my friend will probably never want to go for help again because of this experience And I bet you'll still charge the state $7000 for his 3 or 4 day stay! And now to their response 2 months later....I'm not Tracey first off. My name is Andrea and everything I said was 100% TRUE. The cost were broken down for us before my brother was admitted and I have that in email. The director called my phone directly from his house and told me so. So how many HIPPA laws were violated there? I mean took my info home...really. then spoke as if he was there with my brother And his EXACT words were...if you don't come get him, he will sit in his own feces until you do! YOUR STAFF CENIKOR! this is not 2nd hand and I have all the proof. So stop trying to cover up this whole situation. There is more if I need to go into detail but I will spare you for now!

Response from the owner4 months ago
Hi Andrea, thank you for bringing this to our attention. This has been investigated, and we can say there is not a lot of truth to these claims. We want everyone to have the chance at recovery, but sometimes a higher level of care is required. Patients must be able to perform activities of daily living to be admitted to our program. We promise affordable care for all. The state rates, which are wildly exaggerated here, do not cover what it costs per day for a client. Thankfully, we have a diverse funding mix and can cover that cost. If you would like to talk further, please reach out to marketing@cenikor.org and we'll get you to a member of our leadership team.

Cenikor Tyler does not have the ability to facilitate rehab in the disabled. My disabled friend finally wanted to make a change for the better in his life. They were apprised of his situation before they accepted him into their program. After his intake, he was basically treated like an animal. There was no humane treatment from the staff at Cenikor. They abdicated their responsibility and dumped him in an ambulance. After the hospital gave him an examination and discharged him, Cenikor would not take him back. We are in the process of talking with our attorney to see what can be done so this never happens to another person.

Hi Tracey, thank you for bringing this to our attention. We are looking into this situation, and want you to know we recently let go of our client registration coordinator who may have been working with your loved one. We want everyone to have the chance at recovery, but sometimes a higher level of care is required. Patients must be able to perform activities of daily living to be admitted to our program.
