Medical briefcase icon Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

Heart icon Treatment

alcohol iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

drugs iconDrug Addiction

Drug rehab in Pennsylvania is devoted to the treatment of addiction. Levels of care, treatment methods, and settings differ, but the aim of each program is to end drug dependency and empower participants to achieve long-term recovery.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

opium iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Very nice staff on the floor I was assigned to, but a very disorganized place that does not help at all. They told me I would receive therapy while I was in there, which I didn t. Still in the same position as I was when I went in, but only more frustrated and hopeless. I was put on an eating disorder floor despite not having an ED. I sat in on eating disorder related group sessions that didn t apply me. They cared more about meal planning and nutrients than mental health help for me. I deal with OCD, codependency, situational depression that I needed help for. I ve been struggling to find a therapist, psychiatrist, ocd specialist, and someone to test me for autism and I went to the hospital to hopefully find that. Nope. My mental health was 100% neglected while I was there and once I got out, they didn t set me up with anything that I needed despite claiming they would. The Autism specialist they referred me to is booked until winter so I ll have to wait until then. No call backs about a therapist or psychiatrist for me either. Put me on meds just for me to not be able to get them filled or get the help I need. I should have been set up once I got out with the proper care, instead I m hopeless and trying to STILL do it all myself.

The frustration and stigma that one faces as a result of seeking help for behavioral health issues is daunting, to say the least. Fortunately, my first psychiatric inpatient experience proved to be a turning point in my life; it was a revelation that my inability to function was the result of an illness, rather than just indifference and laziness. Before this hospitalization, I often struggled to just get out of bed, and manage my daily responsibilities as a full-time graduate student. My academic performance as an undergraduate clearly demonstrated my deep appreciation and exceptional comprehension of mathematical concepts. My ability to complete a PhD program in mathematics was never in doubt, yet ...My notion of what constituted a psychiatric inpatient experience could not have been more flawed. From beginning to end, my treatment team sought to introduce tools, including medications, that laid the foundation for achieving and maintaining one's mental health. It was also pointed out that blood chemistry suggested that my profound depression was possibly had a neurochemical basis. What mattered most to me (and my treatment team), of course, was the ability to experience joy, friendship and satisfaction with my life. For the sake of brevity, it was necessary to omit a number of significant obstacles to my recovery. The old adage that " for every 3 steps forward, he took 1 or 2 backward," sort of describes my journey. Recovery from any illness is rarely described by a smooth, linear progression of improvement, let alone those who suffer disturbances of thought or emotion, obsessions and compulsions and addictions. This covers many, but not all pathologies of behavioral health. It turned out that my treatment team (greg orr, penny ?, ...) in 1987 DID care about my success in overcoming my struggles with mental illness; this was reflected in their patience, compassion and professionalism throughout my 50+ day stay! They made all of the difference: I completed my PhD in mathematics, obtained a tenure track faculty position, as well as running dozens of 10k and half-marathons through the years. I am currently retired.Relapses and addiction are also part of my story. Fortunately, I averted total disaster by rushing to the DEC at WPIC when I reached, what I termed, the point of no return. On occasion, I have been a psychiatric inpatient elsewhere, but regarded WPIC as providing the best, most current treatment available. I required inpatient treatment 6 other times, however, no stay, excepting my first one, involved more than a week. Enduring success is a matter of commitment, vigilance and sharing the tools of recovery with others who are struggling!

I was here for 8 days about a month ago. It was genuinely one of the worst experiences of my life, which is saying a lot considering my trauma history. Since getting out, my PTSD has been the worst it has ever been in my life. The milieu therapists were all very kind people who did their best to make my stay as comfortable as possible, but I cannot say the same for the rest of the staff here.If you have any physical disabilities, good luck getting help for that! I have Psoriatic Arthritis and I experienced so much ableism from staff. I slept on a concrete floor the first few nights I was there, which triggered the worst flare-up I have ever had. I got out over a month ago and I am still flaring. I begged the medical staff for a shower chair because I was flaring so bad, but I was refused because they needed a PT consult for that. I requested a PT consult so I could get a shower chair. That never happened!I was also lied to constantly. From maybe the 5th day on, I was told I was going to go home tomorrow. I left on day 8.I was told that I would receive assistance setting up out-patient mental health care after I was discharged. That didn t happen!I had to find my own therapist after getting out. If I didn t already have a psychiatrist, I probably would have had to go without my new medications after I ran out of the 30-day supply they send you home with.If you show any signs of protest or agitation due to the poor treatment you received, you will be treated as though you are in hysterics and it will be used as a reason to keep you longer. If you have literally any other options available, please look into going elsewhere. The worst part about my whole experience is that I had it pretty good compared to the rest of the people on my floor. I truly believe I received preferential treatment because I had visitors/family coming every day.The horror stories I heard from people I was on the floor with will haunt me for the rest of my life. They are not my stories to tell, so I can only speak about my personal experiences, but it terrifies me to know that we treat human beings this way.

This place is a hoot. You'll see all kinds of things. I was there for a night before I checked myself out. Saw a psychotic woman get into it with some lady violently puking every few minutes. Fun!The services they refer you to can be pretty decent, I'll say that much. But don't go here if you need a psych bed- there are multiple much nicer, safer hospitals in Allegheny County and its surroundings. Heck, go to Resolve- you can keep your phone.
