This place is just prison, i went there for depression and they treated me like i committed a crime. The nurses and staff would lie to my parents about my behavior, and say "she needs to stay longer" charging you every minute you're there for not even helping you. I was telling a friend i made there about a crazy dream i had and the staff member lied to my parents and said i was telling people i actually did it. I'm really shy and don't say much. My parents were convinced to keep me there and they also accused me of trying to mess around with a girl when we were making fun of writings on the wall and our door was open. Clearly we were not and they pulled that idea out of a hat. They went so far as to put me in a single bed room so i couldn't have a roommate to further convince people. its sad this place is even still open considering how nobody was helped in any other way except begging to get out. i had to lie my way out and say i was cured to everyone and just completely stop talking around people just to make it out without becoming more crazy, not to mention they let other patients bully you and when you try to tell any staff about it they tell you to get over it even if they do it to the point of tears because they really dont care about you in any way. The second they said i could leave i cried for almost an hour because I couldn't contain myself. Please, please close this place down and dont put your children through this. I also would like to mention i was only 9 and the only reason I ended up in the hospital in the first place was because I was being neglected by my parents to the point where I was extremely depressed and thinking about suicide and just thought bringing me to a mental hospital would fix it. I told staff about everything going on at home too and I just got brushed off as not important. I guess it showed me being neglected at home and deprived of food and a way to shower with a mother who was pumping you with pills and lying to your psychiatrist to get you on those pills for things you dont really have like adhd was better than telling the truth and being verbally abused and neglected by strange adults. I also had no cell phone until I moved out so I'm making this post as an adult with their own family 16 years later. Oj and ben were definitely 2 of the worst staff members but there was a woman whos name i cant remember who was extremely cruel to me and made me cry just for asking to use the phone to call my grandmother who was the only person who actually came to visit me. She would say very rude and terrible things about me to the other staff right in front of me and then laugh when I'd start to cry. At one point i asked to use the phone and i kept getting blatantly ignored so i used it because it was within the hours of allowed use and she was clearly ignoring me and about half an hour later she came in my room yelling at me for using it. I can tell you I still deeply remember my horrible experience here because it was just that traumatizing for a child who went there seeking help. And yes I know it says i cried allot here because i did. At home I was just ignored and neglected and here it was like a whole new form of abuse. I hope things are much much different here now but based on other reviews only a few people have been helped.

Tuckers saved my life twice. I was treated with respect by everyone and some of the staff showed me empathy when I needed it. The techs were especially awesome and I know they are doing it to help people because the pay isn't amazing or anything. I also had coexisting substance abuse issues and they made arrangements for me to goto treatment when I got out, both times.

Tucker Pavilion works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient rehabs offer community-based addiction treatment, enabling clients to remain in their homes while in recovery. Their levels of care typically include partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP), standard outpatient, and sober living programming. Most outpatient facilities offer addiction counseling and recovery-focused life skills training. Integrative programs include evidence-based holistic therapies, such as meditation, music therapy, and massage. Facilities specializing in alcohol and/or opioid addiction may also provide medication assisted treatment (MAT).
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Clients in an intensive outpatient rehab (IOP) benefit from robust support but often do not require the high-level supervision and round-the-clock clinical care provided in an inpatient setting. Clients engage in multiple therapeutic sessions weekly, with most programs requiring between nine and 20 treatment hours per week. Intensive outpatient rehabs provide a wide array of evidence-based services, including addiction counseling, recovery-focused life skills training, holistic therapies, and medication assisted treatment (MAT).
aftercare iconAftercare Support
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
A drug intervention in Virginia requires careful planning and execution. Due to complex family dynamics, intervention services are often necessary to help families successfully navigate the process. An intervention specialist can help family members plan what they will say and then facilitate the conversation. This expert also educates everyone involved about addiction, enabling behaviors, and treatment options.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
24-hour clinical care in Virginia features a highly trained team of professionals to treat your physical, mental, and emotional needs. Doctors and nurses are available to prescribe and administer medications. Psychologists and counselors provide professional counseling. Other experts such as nutritionists and addiction specialists may also offer support. This 24/7, comprehensive care is designed to give you the support you need to begin a successful recovery.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

When you enroll in drug rehab in Virginia, a treatment plan is designed by professional staff in order to help you overcome drug addiction and modify addictive behaviors. This may include evidence-based treatments, group and individual therapy, and relapse prevention.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
hearing-impaired-program thumbnail image
Hearing Impaired Program
A sensory disability, such as hearing impairment, can compound the challenges of addiction recovery. Drug rehabs that are specially designed to accommodate the needs of persons with hearing impairments will include special accessibility features and accommodations to make treatment as comfortable and effective as possible. This may include access to American Sign Language interpreters.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
child-program thumbnail image
Child Program
The providers who specialize in the children's rehab space understand the specialized needs that this population faces. School-based and social services such as tutoring and family counseling are often central to treatment. Child programs may also address the needs of youth experiencing substance abuse in the home, including a parent's or sibling's addiction.

Clinical Services

Cognitive behavioral therapy in Virginia is a short term form of talk therapy. Participants usually have homework between sessions, which may include journaling, self talk, and setting SMART goals. The aim is to transform negative thought patterns into positive ones.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

DO NOT GO HERE. This is the worst place on the planet to me. EVER. There's not much you can do which would make your kid even more upset, it's just little outside area and back to your room or you're sitting in a day room with 16 other kids. ????

It was horrible. I now have a fear of ever going back. It was not the upstairs so much as the intake downstairs. I have osteoarthritis and I was left on a plastic bed/seat for 30 hours. Thirty hours. My knee ballooned up. When I said something to any of the nurses in intake they were completely rude and chose to ignore me and what was happening. When I got upstairs they had my knee xrayed and there was fluid all around my knee. Of course there was. And then I was offered nothing to help but ibuprofen. They never sent a doctor to double check things. Nothing. I ended up having my knee drained by an orthopedic doctor after the fact. The fluid happened because I was left on a plastic seat for 30 hours. Intake needs to be changed and needs to be more comfortable for the mentally ill. We are not prisoners. People with issues like what I have physically cannot not bear to deal with 30+ hours of laying on hard plastic. And no one gave a crap.

I have frequented mental institutions voluntarily for a relatively short time period each visit, and I have to say this place is a few notches better than the others nearby. Nurses might not be the nicest you ll ever see, but trust me, they will do their job and help you whenever you ask (or just ask a slightly less busy nurse if they can t). The shift changes where you have to go to your room and stay there for some time are a bit annoying I ll say, but necessary so the staff can communicate effectively when they swap over nurses and other people for the day. I especially want to thank Dr. Khalon and Robinette, whom were the psychiatrist and nurse leader respectively. The care team are always very nice and the nurse leaders are very hard working, and to me that s a good recipe for regaining composure for everyday life at home. Food is actually pretty good, just make sure you select what you want on the menus and ask if you don t know where or how to do that. To make the visit more fulfilling or to just pass time more quickly, try to make some short term friends or just simply socialize while you are admitted. But if you aren t socially willing at the time, the staff will kindly understand. Also the best snack I found there is dipping goldfish in peanut butter, I might actually start doing that at home. Oh and one more thing, the worst part of the visits for most people, including me, are when you are in the first 24hrs of entering the ER and going through the process. Sadly I don t have any advice for that part, but it gets miles better when you go to an actual unit. Thank you for reading and please remember people care about you!

i was admitted march 2022, and it s taken a lot of processing but i wanted to share my experience. i had attempted suicide, and was taken to a room to be assessed. i was in such a fragile and emotional state, yet man handled and treated with no respect by ER staff. not to say i wasn t rude or vulgar myself, but i was a fifteen year old over-dosing and terrified. if i had been shown compassion by the nurses it would have deescalated the situation. the nurse taking care of me was screaming at me and repeatedly attempted to sedate me. she was insistent that SHE be the one to do it. another classic case of the high school mean girl getting into the nursing field and abusing her power. i had told her that anyone but her may sedate me, and she became irrationally angry. it got to the point a doctor stepped in and told her she needed to leave. security had been just outside the room witnessing this. i vividly remember being told i was going to be admitted and the sheer panic i felt. i had previously undergone residential treatment, and suffer from medical trauma. that is on my medical record, and the staff was well aware of this. in my condition, i could not imagine going through that again, so the logical idea in my mind was to pull out my ivs and get out. i got maybe three feet before a security guard body slammed me and put me in cuffs. they took my mother out of the room, and surrounded me. the lack of empathy and professional behavior still disappoints me to this day. although, even in the darkest times, love will prevail. the female security guard (i believe her name was Sylvia) came to my rescue. she removed the staff from the room and cradled me. that was all i truly needed. she calmed me down quickly and stayed with me for a long while. i will never forget the kindness she showed me that night. it felt as though she was a guardian angel, and i think of her frequently. as far as my experience in tuckers pavilion, the program itself (various therapies; DBT, CBT and so on) could use some revamping. i m not going to lie, i was a menace the first week i was there. i was completely unreceptive to the program and did not leave my room. my TA was Imani and first of all i m so sorry for being difficult and rude the first week. you listened to me and treated me with respect. not only did that change my experience, it was the first time i truly trusted a TA, and felt safe. once i felt heard and respected, i calmed down. Imani has such a way with people. she would make me laugh and laugh, and always cheered me up. also Chelsea don t think i forgot about you. and Ms. Ronny!!! you ladies are the most beautiful souls just overflowing with love. these lovely ladies worked in the youth section, and i am so grateful they did. unfortunately in my experience, a lot of the time the youth group TA s get into it for the wrong reasons but Sylvia, Imani, Chelsea, and Ms. Ronny were there for all the right ones. the impact you have made on my life is monumental, and i thank you for making a bad situation feel less scary. you kept me safe, and filled my heart with endless love. you ladies assure me that there ARE people out there, strangers even, who LOVE you and want you to succeed.

I haven t been a patient here but I was told a family member was admitted so I have been trying to contact them and I never get an answer. When I do someone hangs up and I don t get a return call. The hospital cannot help with the pavilion department and there is no overseer to ever speak to. I m worried because we don t live in Richmond and no one seems to be able to assist me. All I see are recent bad reviews even from employers. It s hard not to worry about my loved one when they are hours away from home.

I have never felt more alone, more empty, more depressed than when i stepped foot in here. I haven t had a consistent case worker. The drugs they put me on made me sick. The staff is completely apathetic and uncaring. I feel dehumanized when I m there. I wasn t depressed anymore before they threw me into this place. I m not even allowed to go outside. Every patient here looks empty and despondent. No one here feels cared for or better. I was lucky enough to be whisked away to medical where i could be surrounded by family and caring nurses. Please, if you love your mentally ill friend/family member, do not send them here. This will not help them in any way shape or form. Send them to a therapy program or a higher rated psych ward if that s what they need.

people that don t like this place are usually adolescents who are needy and can t be away from their phone for 5 second's. this was a much needed vacation and wake up call for me.pros: great trauma er staff, good nurses, placed my iv perfectly even though i overdoses on stimulants. good blood draws. good group counseling. good psychologists. good crafts, karoke and activities. can call your family and friends during the day hours on their landline.the cons: food taste and quality, and being over medicated with new meds. i lost probably 10-20lbs in my week long stay in spring 2023. wakes you up at 4-5am daily for vitals, which for me isn t bad cause i can t sleep anyways and am a morning person. the psychologist recommendations after your stay for future care is 50/50 good or awful.

Hate to use my real name but oh well. I was in there not long ago and it wasn't that bad. The only complaint I have is I didn't get all my stuff back but I should have doubled checked when I left. Foods not supposed to be the greatest because it's hospital food. But they're pulled pork was amazing. Most of the nurses were kind to me, dr talked to me appropriately. And I was told it's not at all like jail, jails worse.
