About Three Rivers Behavioral Health

Three Rivers Behavioral Health is a hospital that specializes in treating mental and behavioral health conditions. Located in West Columbia, South Carolina, their sprawling campus is nestled in the green Midlands. They accept TRICARE, Medicaid, Medicare and most other insurance providers.

They offer inpatient treatment for adolescents and inpatient, outpatient and partial hospitalization programs for adults. They also have a trauma partial hospitalization program for first responders, those in the military and veterans over the age of 18 who need intensive mental health support.

Their adolescent program is for children aged 11 to 17. They treat mental health conditions like depression, schizophrenia, and anxiety, and behavioral conditions like alcohol or drug abuse. They’ve created a stable and highly structured environment that makes it possible for adolescents to focus on their recovery.

Their inpatient adult program includes intensive individual therapy. During these sessions, you’ll work with a therapist to get to the bottom of addictive behaviors and address any damage its caused to your relationships and professional life. You’ll also attend insightful group sessions to learn about responding to stressful situations in a mindful way and develop your coping skills in an understanding environment.

You can enjoy music therapy and art therapy sessions. These creative outlets can help you work through difficult emotions in a curious and safe environment.

They also offer telehealth services for some of their programs after you’ve completed an initial assessment at their facility. You can receive medication management services and attend individual or group therapy sessions from the comfort of your home. This option is available for their intensive outpatient and chemical dependency intensive outpatient programs, as well as their partial hospitalization and trauma partial hospitalization programs.

Accepted Insurance

Three Rivers Behavioral Health works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Clients engaged in a rehab aftercare program are in a more advanced stage of recovery. Many have already completed inpatient detox and/or rehab and have returned to their home, workplace, and community. Rehab aftercare services are designed to support clients' recovery over the long term and typically include a broad portfolio of resources, such as peer coaching and 12 step program induction. Clients may collaborate with their case manager and care team to create their care plan.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
As a short-term option, a partial hospitalization program (PHP) provides an intensive rehab option for individuals with acute symptoms. PHP treatment focuses on management without requiring 24-hour care. During PHP treatment, you may engage in behavioral therapy services, psychoeducation, and periodic evaluations conducted by licensed professionals. The duration of a partial hospitalization program can average 90-130 days based on your progress. Insurance coverage may vary, but many providers offer full or partial coverage for PHP.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Choosing a drug rehab in South Carolina helps you overcome drug dependency, learn how to manage cravings, and obtain the tools needed to prevent relapse. This is accomplished through individualized treatment that addresses a full spectrum of physical, social, and emotional needs.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Sad excuse for rehab

Some of the staff were very helpful. Some were far from it and quite disrespectful. Very discouraging and disheartening experience. Would not recommend. Go there only if you have no other options....

The nursing staff are horrible people. The social workers do provide help, at least in my case they did. Overall the place can be compared to prison where you're treated as if you have committed a crime rather a person seeking help.

Former RN here. It is the worst place I have ever worked in my 30 yrs of nursing. Deplorable conditions for the patients, place is filthy. Supervisors on night shift only help their favorites and apparently I wasn't the right color. Never enough staff. MHTs would bless you out as charge nurse and dare you to do anything about it. Nurses will tell you what they will or won't do regardless of their job description leaving you to pick up the slack. Little training on actual job/computer system. The cafeteria food is disgusting and staff there have no personality. Patients are treated like they are in jail. Overall, extremely rude employees and no team players. Would not recommend this place to anyone. Needs to be shut down!!!!!!

I was enrolled into the dual group afternoon class. Melissa, the LPC, made me feel welcome and made sure what the group talked about was confidential. Melissa gave me hope to find a counselor that will listen and try to understand my perspective. If you are having second thoughts about this program, don t. Just enroll and go with the flow.

I've been to this facility years ago.You have some staff that are okay.I was put on the side where males were.I am a female and wasn't the only one put on that side. I was harassed and had to write a note. The note I wrote said to whom it may concern I'm sorry. I'm not sorry because I suffered from mental health issues. I am not the only person that suffered. It really makes me sick to my stomach of how people are treated unfairly.I took notice that one staff member was judgemental. He thought I was gay and making statements. Please do not let your kids or anyone you care about go to this facility.

Just wanted to let you know in there again already traumatized come out more traumatized. But this time they got me out early because I was so sick throwing up food and liquids.Lexington county sc doesn't have a good mental health facility. Three rivers is the only one they have. Feels more like a punishment for having a mental illness rather a place to heal and get better.Columbia has one but don't take my insurance. Don't understand why the good places don't accept medicaid. Some people are very traumatized more than others and they need better care.I'm gonna have to go out of state and find some way to pay for it because first I can't get better in 5 to 7 days and there isn't a good place here to go for the care I need. I have a lifetime of trauma that came crashing down on me 2 years ago. I'm now even more traumatized now after being put in Three rivers so many times and I have committed myself in there a few times desperate for help for suicidal thoughts. But each time I've committed myself and I was committed with papers also a good few times for being suicidal.Being suicidal shouldn't be like a punishment it should be treated like any other disease with proper care for physical and mental illnesses. Because some people like myself have physical problems from the trauma they have had. My trauma began as a child. I was always strong throughout my life until all the memories of trauma started taking its toll on my mind and then started taking a toll on my already damaged body from going in and out of Three rivers. I have had car accidents, physical abuse and sexual abuse throughout my life. Now my physical body has trauma to it too. I didn't really start feeling the physical trauma until having to be locked out of my room at three rivers and made to keep going all day long nonstop. Then on top of that I haven't been able to sleep day or night at home or in three rivers. Now my sleep has gone to bad to never able to sleep at all because of the fear of my mental illness. I'm now so afraid of myself because I have overdosed three times in a row because of the lack of a good mental health facility here. You don't get treated as human being you get treated like a dog.Three rivers behavioral health might be good for addiction rehab and for those who are homeless because they do not put you out on the street. They do find a place for the homeless. It is really no place for someone who has a true mental illness with a lot of trauma. They have released me making me feel like more less of a person each time I have been in their facility. And I become more depressed and more suicidal each time. I'm actually afraid to try to get help from them because of the way I have been treated by the staff.I have been in three rivers so many times now they all know me by my name. That's sad because I started last year going there for help on my own not being suicidal yet , just looking for help. Then as the time passed each time I have came out of this facility i have become more and more depressed and then I became suicidal because of the way I have been treated. I wasn't always like this. I was a great people person and loved all people. I am now afraid of people especially hospitals and doctors. I cant go see a real doctor for anything without rhem looking at all the different psych meds they have all put me on, i have truely been on them all, even antipsychoticts when i wasnt physycotic yet. They have put me on meds that cause insomnia when i already now have severe insomnia, crazy. The food is aweful and unhealthy.Just not a good place for the mentally ill especially if your phycally sick too. It might be go for detox and homeless but not for mental illnesses

Absolutely Horrible place.1. Roaches found in eggs2. The nurses DO NOT care3. They let someone's diabetes level reach 500 (which can be fatal)Coming to this place is like asking for trauma. Im surprised a lawsuit hasn't happened yet considering how this is a gold mine of problems.

FWIW: With many places offering these types of services experiencing closure, they're doing what they can to ensure others get some semblance of help that often gets left out, left behind, or otherwise not provided. Although I have found it generally satisfactory, the way things are operated, organized, and processed, the general focus of improving for this specific area of health, and the overall care has room for improvement. However, given the funding difficulties most similar establishments have, it serves its purpose better than others of its kind may have.EDIT: I saw the business's response, but the form that was URL'd in the reply does not permit one to successfully hit the 'submit' button when sending in the concerns. Either way, thanks in advance.

Intensive Outpatient Program has a lot of beneficial material that you can receive from Google. On the flip side, they increased my trauma. Them folks keep up a lot of drama amongst themselves, and the patients. There are very few counselors who genuinely care. Then there are counselors who are bystanders to toxicity. I can write a book about the neglect, poor treatment, and traumatic experience I received. I will keep it short patient advocacy is nonexistent. They do not go by the guidelines. They lie alot! Daniel do not like his position at all! Nancy is a narcissist! Your insurance is billed for one program, but they place you in another program. They lack the capacity to facilitate patients. So they crowd you in tight spaces and rooms. They don t give a crap if you are claustrophobic. Their response is, well you can always check yourself out since you volunteered to come here. They are just money driven! If you are military like me and really need help with trauma, work, life balance, please believe all these reviews! And check out Prisma or other options for treatment plans. Once they retrain or weed out the bad staff, this place will be decent. But right now, For counselors who want to work here, look at the job reviews from different sites. They are just as horrible!

Very poor experience here last January(2024). Staff members are very unprofessional, refused to help me clean my new stitches within 5 days after my suicide attempt, FREEZING cold, staff member gave her facebook account to a fellow patient, they are incredibly inconsistent with their rules and took my underwear for 2 days then for the other 3 days I was there they didn't give me the bag my mom dropped off and I had to wear the same underwear for 3 days straight. Nobody else's was taken. They took my flipflops then returned them then took them again, and the rules were constantly changing. I could barely move my entire left arm and couldn't grip anything with it at all due to my suicide attempt and was given no significant medical help, no assistance, no advice, and just expected to shower every morning and afternoon with soaking wet cold bandages, on fresh stitches, expected to make my bed every day, etc. I was put on Lexapro less than 12 hours after my intake which induced a manic episode. I was malnourished and severely underweight from my anorexia, and my blood pressure ran around 80/50 and 90/60, and I was criticized for "not drinking enough water" and berated to have my blood pressure retaken several times for no specific reason. They did not do anything at all to assist me with my eating disorder or anything to keep track of how much I was eating. The food made me sick my second day and I threw up 6 times in a row in my room one morning and they accused me of purging (has never been a behavior of mine) and didn't clean up the vomit properly. They barely provide any scrubs or clothes to you and one girl had to stay in one pair of scrubs from the ER the entire time she was there and she was subtly made fun of and singled out by the staff members for smelling bad even though she couldn't do anything about it. Absolutely no psychiatric treatment for patients and no attempt to help them in any way. Group therapies were completely useless and had no purpose. Dr.Downy, the psychiatrist, has 1-3 minute conversations with you every day where absolutely nothing is achieved. I left Three Rivers 5 days after my attempt, whilst manic, on meds that dont work for me, with no referral to anywhere else and no assistance to my mom with finding an ED residential treatment center for me. Call sessions were barely 5-10 minutes and they demanded you to wrap them up quickly, at one point forcing me to hang up while I was on the phone with my mom crying about an important conversation. My mom called several times to see how I was and was given minimal or no answer or they wouldn't even pick up the phone. Absolutely horrible place could not stress enough how much you need to get out of here and go anywhere else. I recommend Prisma's Adolescent Ward. It is much better in terms of staff, therapy, food, cleanliness, comfort, consistency, and helping. It made a large impact on me and was extremely helpful in both long and short term.
