About Three Rivers Behavioral Health

Three Rivers Behavioral Health is a hospital that specializes in treating mental and behavioral health conditions. Located in West Columbia, South Carolina, their sprawling campus is nestled in the green Midlands. They accept TRICARE, Medicaid, Medicare and most other insurance providers.

They offer inpatient treatment for adolescents and inpatient, outpatient and partial hospitalization programs for adults. They also have a trauma partial hospitalization program for first responders, those in the military and veterans over the age of 18 who need intensive mental health support.

Their adolescent program is for children aged 11 to 17. They treat mental health conditions like depression, schizophrenia, and anxiety, and behavioral conditions like alcohol or drug abuse. They’ve created a stable and highly structured environment that makes it possible for adolescents to focus on their recovery.

Their inpatient adult program includes intensive individual therapy. During these sessions, you’ll work with a therapist to get to the bottom of addictive behaviors and address any damage its caused to your relationships and professional life. You’ll also attend insightful group sessions to learn about responding to stressful situations in a mindful way and develop your coping skills in an understanding environment.

You can enjoy music therapy and art therapy sessions. These creative outlets can help you work through difficult emotions in a curious and safe environment.

They also offer telehealth services for some of their programs after you’ve completed an initial assessment at their facility. You can receive medication management services and attend individual or group therapy sessions from the comfort of your home. This option is available for their intensive outpatient and chemical dependency intensive outpatient programs, as well as their partial hospitalization and trauma partial hospitalization programs.

Accepted Insurance

Three Rivers Behavioral Health works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Per session payment lets you pay for each treatment at the time of service. You may also pay for a certain number of sessions up front and then pay for more if needed. This format allows you to tailor the financial investment to your specific needs and avoid having a large lump sum payment due at the end of the treatment program.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
As a short-term option, a partial hospitalization program (PHP) provides an intensive rehab option for individuals with acute symptoms. PHP treatment focuses on management without requiring 24-hour care. During PHP treatment, you may engage in behavioral therapy services, psychoeducation, and periodic evaluations conducted by licensed professionals. The duration of a partial hospitalization program can average 90-130 days based on your progress. Insurance coverage may vary, but many providers offer full or partial coverage for PHP.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Choosing a drug rehab in South Carolina helps you overcome drug dependency, learn how to manage cravings, and obtain the tools needed to prevent relapse. This is accomplished through individualized treatment that addresses a full spectrum of physical, social, and emotional needs.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
child-program thumbnail image
Child Program
The providers who specialize in the children's rehab space understand the specialized needs that this population faces. School-based and social services such as tutoring and family counseling are often central to treatment. Child programs may also address the needs of youth experiencing substance abuse in the home, including a parent's or sibling's addiction.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Communication was poor.Dr was too busy to call parentsWhen our child was discharged he was high. Took him to hospital tested positive for addersll which was not prescribed. Our son was in a major altercation the night before discharge and we did not get an incident report.Takes days to return callsAn employee there told my son he can go to long term (when that was not recommended. Employee (Brian) told our son he could find him a way to stay out of the home till he s 18. When confronted he was very unprofessional. Then within 24 hours they accepted him back into the facility after the dr was clear that this was behavioral and he was not suicidal.

this place is horrid. when i first got there they made me sit in the waiting room for over. an hour and said a counselor would be with me. they never even saw me. when i got into the unit they gave me my blanket and there was a dirty stain on it. i had to replace it. people had seizures everyday and they sent them to the hospital but never kept them there. it took them days to get meds for the people who had seizures and it took days for them to get my daily meds. one night they gave juice to people for no reason. the staff made jokes about it saying baddie baddie shot a clock and laughing at us suffering. that night they didnt let us take phone calls to our parents which is required, they didnt let us take showers, they didnt let us have snack, and they didnt give us our meds. multiple times they were late to give us our meds. and when people needed a quiet place from all the yelling, they never let us. this place is and i would never recommend it to people.

My husband was there and now we have been trying to get the dr to fill out the paper work for his job and she has not filled it out and it s going on 4 weeks since it s been faxed. Multiple calls and voicemails, fax s no response. We live far away and cant just go up to the door to knock to get the paper work filled out. Dr. Samson Joyce, MD I don t think cares about patients after treatment as long as she gets her pay at the end of the day. Oh yeah and I ve used their contact us site multiple times with no response using that either. We NEED a phone call not a link to a contact page!

So I attended this place 2 years ago and still get triggered because of just my experienced there let's start with the staff never watched or cared for us would watch this one girl try to fight and bully everyone then would blame the victim I was jumped in my sleep and the staff told the girls it was because "I threatened her????" Then later when I'd ask to talk to the person in charged to see if they could possibly switch me they finally said they believe me and they had camera proof but they needed to be on her side because she was schizophrenic and I didn't learn anything there to the point where my mom ended up taking me somewhere else not long after I was 15 basically being bullied and kept silent we couldn't even talk about anything

My daughter was a patient here and just got out yesterday. While she was there, she was beaten up numerous times (by another patient), touched inappropriately (by another patient), I was hung up on by a supervisor when trying to check on my daughter after she got punched and kicked numerous times in the back and back of the head, and she was not given some of her medications among some of the things that happened. Also, she was not treated for that I wanted her there for in the first place. So we are still at square one with her. If I could give this place negative stars, I would! If you have loved ones that need help, please DO NOT SEND THEM HERE!!! They will leave more messed up then what they were when they went in. I would not wish my worst enemy to go here.

I was send here involuntarily from lex med. If anyone actually listened they would have realized I shouldn t have even been there. I had a prescription medication reaction and then boom I m crazy . Nobody can do anything about your situation other than the doctor or a social worker and due to both not doing their jobs I was stuck for 6 days. Although there were a few people who actually seemed to care the majority of staff and especially the nurses were extremely rude and did not seem to care at all about myself and other patients. This experience was not that far from being in jail. I wouldn t wish a stay here on anyone. Almost forgot, they stick you with an insane bill at the end even though I had no say In coming. I hope they get it together soon so more people don t have to go through this traumatic experience.

My 14 yr old adolescent son went to this facility for a week. He never not once met with a therapist. Dr Sharma did not once contacted me. There is no real structure like they advertise. All the children did was watch tv, eat, go outside 3 times a day. There was only one group meeting in a week. There were constant fights between other boys, one in particular. Some of the boys were carrying shanks to stab others. My son fells like I was punishing him instead of getting him some help. When I would call to check on my son. Most of the time the nurses desk would not answer the phone. And several times they just picked up the phone and slammed it down rudely hanging it up. I called the Therapist 19 times and didn't receive a call back until he was being discharged. They prescribed a medication that my son had serious abdominal pain from taking it just one month ago. When I picked my son up I have never seen him in such a withdrawn and aggravated state of mind. The following morning after coming home my son had to be transferred to the ER by ambulance because of being so emotionally distraught from his experience. Do not send your child to this place. I guarantee you and your child will regret it. They do nothing and are just overpriced baby sitters.
