About Southwestern Behavioral Healthcare

Southwestern Behavioral Healthcare - Robert M. Spear Building is in Evansville, Indiana. It’s an alcohol and drug rehab for adults and youths. Their services range from detox to outpatient programs to help your family heal from addictions.

Detox is available at some outpatient sites. Otherwise, you may be referred to their residential center. Their detox consists of acupuncture, in which needles are inserted into parts of the ear for 45 minutes. These pressure points can relieve cravings and make your withdrawal more bearable. You’ll be in a group setting, so you’ll heal with cohorts.

Their outpatient program is known as Matrix. It’s a structured program that focuses on your recovery skills. You’ll have tips on how to prevent relapses and classes for your family to be involved. You’ll meet three times a week, either in the mornings or evenings. An addiction specialist is on standby to help guide you.

Transitional recovery and inpatient care are available should you have acute symptoms or need more support. They’ll refer you if need be.

I'm sure the practitioners here are good and decent people but these Southwestern Facilities themselves are straight up designed to bill your insurance as much as possible before you are given any help. One specialist will refer you to another, and then this specialist will refer you to another, and then this specialist will refer you to another and FINALLY, in several months you can begin your treatment.Thank God there's not a mental health crisis in America right now!Again, the people who work here are lovely and I'm sure their hands are tied in making these kinds of decisions. These facilities are not. Avoid if you have any urgent mental health issues.

Tabitha, thank you for the 4-star rating. I think with many companies, there are always ways to improve and we strive daily (I know this for a fact as I'm often in these meetings) to continue to enhance and offer the best not only for our patient but our employees as well. Take care and we hope you are doing well.

My experiences in the Spear building have always been good. Linda T always greets me with a smile and kindness. Julie V. is a wonderful prescriber. She's very attentive to my whole body and life, not just my mental health. Dana the nurse is always kind and helpful. I've been a client there since 2012 and I don't want to get my care from anyone else.

Accepted Insurance

Southwestern Behavioral Healthcare works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient programs are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare. They offer different outpatient programs and groups for patients with substance abuse problems, for those who already have completed a substance abuse program or also for those who need with a history of substance abuse. The average duration of these groups is 8 weeks with weekly sessions.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

For long-term recovery from drug addiction, drug rehab in Indiana is often key. This treatment gives individuals who are struggling with a substance use disorder the tools to manage their disorder and achieve long-term sobriety.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Recreational therapy (aka therapeutic recreation) uses creative and fun activities to help with addiction recovery. Recreational therapists lead patients in entertaining and engaging activities like sports or games; art (drawing, painting, sculpture); drama, music, and dance; and/or community outings (field trips) to improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

They helped me a lot during a moment of crisis, however, after I missed an appointment due to an emergency they 'dropped my case.' Why would you? I still needed your help. Now I have to start all over.

Doing the hard work in therapy is the key. I've been through physical and mental therapy, and likewise with both, you get out what you put in. Whether it's psych, therapy, group sessions, a skills coach...as much as you can engage in, dig deep and show up.My road has been rough and the journey isn't over, and it feels good to have a team under one roof, along with a group of peers I see every week whom can actually empathize with me, because they're going it through it too. It's a place with real people. Have I had an occasional communication/scheduling blip? Yes, but it's extremely rare. And the environment is appropriate for what the setting is, which I appreciate. The support staff is friendly and helpful. The practioners that have helped me, including Wyeth, Julie, Lacy, and Alicia, along with the peer group, have been great.I highly recommend their services.

This place needs to be investigated by whoever investigates practices. The place used to be great with the old administrator but when they retired, so did the greatness. This place gaslights you, makes you wait hours past your scheduled appointment time sitting in the waiting room, and gives you the wrong or weak meds for your diagnosis. They'll set you up with a ride to get you to your appointments, but the driver never shows up and you're forced to reschedule. And don't get me started on the drug delivery from their in-house pharmacy. The pharmacy will say they "attempted" to make the delivery even if you are sitting at your door waiting for the driver, they never come and you have to get it yourself anyways. Like I said, the place used to be great but has obviously fallen on hard times. If there is ever a class action brought up on this organization, count me in. Respond to that, respond bot. .01 stars you don't deserve a full star.

Thus far the only thing I have negative is scheduling an appt 6mos in future and no follow up reminder but I'm also a responsible adult so it's on me to remember. Just be nice so i didnt get 20.00 charges when i do forget. Other than that it's been great.

Response from the owner1 year ago

I went here as a child and when I found out that my old psychiatrist is still employed with them I felt the need to write this review. Do not trust this place with your children. At least from personal experience with Tina Evan Robinson. She changed my medication every month put me on medication that increased other problems put me on medication that could kill me and never seem to care. Never bother to notice that I have autism nor to diagnose me instead she chose to use me as a guinea pig which she admitted to when I was 17 and my mother could no longer enter the building due to health problems. I would never trust this place with any child. Not as long as she is employed or people like her. The minute I turned 18 I dropped all medication went through 6 months withdrawals and have been perfectly fine since. No problems other than what is related to my autism. She will hurt your children if she has not changed her behavior since then. I hope that she has changed but watch her and listen to your kids

I scheduled an appointment with Southwest FOUR months ago and was told that Nov. 15 was the earliest that they could get me in for an assessment for a therapist. I called a month ago to see if they had any earlier times and to confirm my original appointment. It was for Nov 15. I went in today and they told me it was last Monday and a virtual appointment. They never reached out to me to tell me the appointment was changed and refused to reschedule me, saying they would call me to reschedule. I am sickened by this and will be finding somewhere else to receive help.

Response from the owner3 years ago
Allie, thank you for contacting us. Please reach out to us privately at communications@southwestern.org and provide your phone number as one of our leadership team members will call you to discuss what transpired. We are sorry that this happened and thank you for bringing it to our attention.

I started going to therapy here as a way to help me deal with issues regarding our adopted daughter. It has helped me to deal with my own anxiety and also learn how to better advocate for my daughter. I have been attending regular, talk therapy. Upon the advice of my therapist I have also started EMDR therapy. I am very thankful for their services!
