Spectrum Health Systems

About Spectrum Health Systems, Inc.

Spectrum Health Systems offers comprehensive residential treatment for substance use disorder and dual diagnosis for adults. You'll find 'em located out on Oak Street in Westborough, Massachusetts. This is Spectrum’s flagship location and is the Charles J. Faris Recovery Center, located in a 25-acre park.

The center is accredited by CARF. If you’re wondering about payment, the center accepts insurance from many providers. They also take Medicare Part B and Medicaid. There’s also a sliding fee schedule based on your income and the size of your family. They don’t turn anyone away for an inability to pay.

They offer medical detox with 24 hour nursing supervision. They can help you detox from opioids, alcohol, or whatever substance you’ve been using. They’ll give you medication to help ease the worst withdrawal symptoms. While in detox, you’ll begin preparing for the next part of your recovery.

This location also offers clinical stabilization. This is a short term inpatient (IP) program. You’ll have an assessment and participate in individual and group counseling. You’ll prepare a continuing care plan and decide what your next step will be for your recovery process.

After detox, if appropriate, you’ll move to a residential treatment program. This is a longer program than the clinical stabilization program and is gender specific to address men’s and women’s unique needs. The schedule is structured and you’ll participate in different therapy modalities. These include family, group, and individual counseling.

There are also recovery groups and relapse prevention training. You’ll have time for recreational activities since exercise is an important part of recovery.

While in the program, you’ll work on developing a continuing care plan. Having a plan is important to help you maintain sobriety after discharge. The length of stay in the residential program varies depending on your progress.

More than one former client felt that the center saved their lives. They mentioned that the staff was amazing and helped with little things, like cleaning a jacket.

This is now my second review for spectrum but this time for their rehab facility, not their detox.Today I was in agonizing pain from 2 abcesses on my inner leg. Its a recurring medical condition not related to my addiction. I had been working with the nurse about it but as of 3am this morning I couldn't even move without having to scream into my pillow.I told staff I needed to go to a hospital and they said they can't call an ambulance, it's against protocol. They said I'd have to walk out of the building into a cab or they could "see if one of their drivers are available". I asked to do that, they said I couldn't do that until they heard from the doctor.I asked when that would be. They said they didn't know, it would be over the phone, they only come in a few times a week.I then heard them discussing my abcesses in the COMMON ROOM. I heard this through my closed door and across my bedroom. When I confronted the RA about violating HIPPA law she said "she [the nurse] was whispering and he [another client] wasn't paying attention"I then struggled to get to the phone and dialed 911.When the emts arrived they told me I needed to go down and get in. I said "no, I can barely walk, I need them to come here" to which they finally let them in.I was then told I was discharged and they tried to give my belongings to the EMTs who refused.I've since learned staff lied to my mother saying I was verbally abusive and told it'd be 15 min wait for the doctor. These are absolutely lies.I gave this place a second chance and got discharged because they wouldn't tend to my medical emergency and then made my support system blame me.

Accepted Insurance

Spectrum Health Systems, Inc. works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient programs are designed for clients who are medically stable and not at an elevated risk of relapse, including those who have already completed inpatient care. Outpatient programs typically advance clients' established treatment plans, offering continuing addiction counseling and recovery education. Clients who enter outpatient care immediately following detox may also receive medical and mental health assessments and personalized treatment plans. Most outpatient rehabs provide multiple levels of care to align with clients' unique needs.
inpatient iconInpatient
Inpatient rehab offers robust, hands-on care in a highly structured and supportive environment. The facility provides housing, meals, and round-the-clock supervision, allowing clients to focus exclusively on their recovery. Inpatient treatment typically involves intensive addiction counseling based on CBT, DBT, RBT, motivational interviewing, or other psychotherapeutic approaches. Many inpatient treatment centers also offer life skills training and/or complementary therapies, including meditation, mindfulness, and nutrition counseling.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) facilitate clients' sustained sobriety through high-level care aligned with their evolving needs. Clients engage in multiple treatment sessions per week, typically receiving between nine and 20 hours of outpatient care weekly. The frequency and intensity of treatment gradually decreases as clients stabilize. Many intensive outpatient rehabs offer a variety of services, including addiction counseling, recovery-focused life skills training, and medication assisted treatment (MAT). Evidence-based complementary therapies are also common.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Spectrum’s detoxification programs provide 24-hour medical supervision and compassionate nursing care to ensure safe withdrawal from alcohol, opioids and other substances. Medications are used to suppress withdrawal symptoms and make clients as comfortable as possible during detoxification. During this time, they work with each client to prepare them for the next step in the recovery process. Because addiction is a chronic disease, most individuals benefit from continued treatment to learn how to live drug-free and sustain their recovery over time.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Addiction is a highly complex problem, and drug rehab in Massachusetts is often necessary to address it. These programs treat physical, mental, and relational issues that are involved. Treatment empowers individuals to manage these issues without the use of drugs.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
child-program thumbnail image
Child Program
The providers who specialize in the children's rehab space understand the specialized needs that this population faces. School-based and social services such as tutoring and family counseling are often central to treatment. Child programs may also address the needs of youth experiencing substance abuse in the home, including a parent's or sibling's addiction.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.

Clinical Services

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

This place is a joke. The staff will steal youre drop offs. I brought my wife $$ and cigarettes 2 times in a one week period she never received them With no consequence. They say we will check the cameras but never do. If you drop something of get a name and get a video or picture of that person that takes the drop off. This happened to numerous people in a 2 week period. These places literally higher anybody. I could go on and on about what I've witnessed over the year from my own personal experience. Sad to say this is common in most facilities in massachusetts. Don't get me wrong there is some amazing people that work in this field.#2 my wife went to the hospital from there for a previous medical condition that had nothing to do with detoxing (that they were aware of before hand). They promised her they would save her bed, the next day they denied they said that and then lied and said she was so dizzy they couldn't provide her enough care. Mind you she walked to the Ambulance and carried her own large bags and was never dizzy. They only changed there minds when the doctor at the hospital threatened to file a complaint with with the A.G. I assume they make a initial fee when you check in. So turn over is key. Just a $$ grab with no compassion. Sickening.

Placed saved my life. Forever grateful. I was able to turn my life around and now I work in the field. I can't thank the staff enough for never giving up on me. Everyone who works in Detox and CSS are amazing. People don't get the verbal beating the staff takes from some of the clients so I wouldn't read to far into the negative reviews. On 7/1/24 I'll have 2 years and I couldn't be more alive!

I can't believe how great the staff is. I just got home from detox and was unpacking my belongings. When I arrived there, I had blood on my nice new white Reebok jacket from a fall on my forehead. I asked admissions if they could put it through a wash cycle for me while I was intoxicated........ I know who you are!!! I just tried calling you. Please give a big shout out to them all! And thank you from the bottom of my Heart. Gary Cote

I went to the detox(ats) and the css program. I have no complaints except for the doctor and some of the nurses. Dr. D refused to approve my medications for adhd and panic attacks. I have been on both medications for over two years. I signed releases as well for her to contact my psychiatrist, she never did. Sorry but if you have been on a benzo for over two years it is seriously dangerous to abruptly stop taking it Some of the nurses were wonderful while others did not start meds on time and were completely rude. I will be contacting mass health and the state about Dr d

Response from the owner9 months ago
We allow all CSS clients to access our psych provider services if they have any questions or need a refill. There are times when clients bring in medication that is not labeled or in the correct bottles and Dr. D has no choice but to hold off on allowing them to take that medication for safety reasons. Please contact Mark, our Executive Director for Inpatient Services, at 508-439-6326 for more information on our medication policies.

On 11-19-23 a patient had a seizure and the staff did not call 911 they were running around doing nothing but yelling not responding to the patient my boyfriend and another patient were the only people helping this person. My boyfriend is currently there trying to get help he needs after having major surgery to remove colon cancer the staff made him wait till late to give him his meds and shot which has to be given at the same time everyday. They also had an other patient who overdosed and staff again did nothing except yell and run around acting like they are correctional officers. Good luck with getting a caseworker because it was weeks before he saw one and has only seen once. They don t provide any groups nothing. This place needs to be shut down

My experience in the CSS program was relatively positive for the most part however there was a situation that was handled completely inappropriately by an RS staff member, George which ultimately had a negative impact on my last 2 weeks there and unfortunately resulted in another patient leaving AMA.There was "allegedly" some concern about the nature of my relationship with another male patient who I came to be friends with on the unit. I say "allegedly" because George was the only member of staff to address his concerns by continuously questioning me about it. I must have explained to him upwards of 10 times (before AND after my friend had already left) that our friendship wasn't cause for concern... that we hadn't broken any rules... that nowhere in the patient handbook is there a policy against 2 patients becoming close friends, having real-talk recovery conversations with each other and spending down time together IN COMMON AREAS with other patients AND STAFF present.I frequently observed George engage in favoritism especially toward the female clients and it was evident that he was displaying different levels of attention towards certain patients like myself and the situation involving the other male patient. The amount of unnecessary attention focused on it by George raised a lot of concerns for me. It completely detracts from Spectrums ability to provide effective treatment to individuals seeking help.Neither myself or my friend were ever addressed by a supervisor or counselor about what was going on. Nor were either of us questioned or given warning about Spectrums policy regarding male/female FRIENDSHIP in a coed unit. My friend was very unexpectedly told he was being moved to the all male unit with little explanation. He ultimately made the decision to discontinue treatment as he only had a few days left in CSS and felt that the environment on the male unit would not be conducive to preparing him for his next step.Even after my friend had already left, George continued with a line of inappropriate questioning and made accusations about my friend, claiming that there was real cause for concern based on what he had read in my friend's file. This is a clear breach of ethical boundaries. The entire ordeal compromised the quality of care I recieved and created an uncomfortable atmosphere for the remainder of my stay. It's crucial for patients to feel safe and respected. Unfortunately, the way this matter was so poorly handled ultimately undermines the effectiveness of the treatment provided by Spectrum.

I came there needing help more than ever to get sober, first off they had scrubs that fit me nor made an effort to find away . Then they wouldn t medicate me at all and the nurse and staff were all ever rude and made you feel uncomfortable. They write me two twice for crying about how badly I felt and made me go to meals even tho I could barely walk. Not a single person there seem to care or even know what was going on with any of the residence. I want to smoke break with my entire pack of cigarettes back up to the unit because he didn t even check if you had them if they had them. They don t always have a staff member on the floor with clients. There s nowhere to go and hang out besides one room and your bedroom. The only good thing they had there was a TV in your bedroom. They never give out any personal hygiene products and I guess you re supposed to use body wash to wash your hair. They were just very in professional and rude.

Response from the owner1 year ago
Thanks for letting us know of your experience. To clarify, we always have staff on the floor. If the recovery specialist leaves the floor, a nurse or case manager covers for him/her. We also have a large group room on the floor with games and a large TV if patients don't want to stay in their rooms. Medications are based on accepted protocols. If you would like to discuss your concerns or consider returning to treatment, please call Mark, our Executive Director of Residential Services at (508) 439-6326.
