About Silver Hill Hospital

Silver Hill Hospital is a comprehensive treatment center that helps those with substance use disorder, mental health challenges, and dual diagnosis. Services include:

Inpatient
This program provides 24/7 care for those who have a high level of need for monitoring during the initial stages of treatment. Crisis stabilization, medication management, dual diagnosis treatment, mental health treatment, and psychiatry services are provided. Clients who need to detox can be given a safe detox program. The average length of stay is 5 – 12 days in length. If a longer stay is needed, that is possible. If clients are unable to return home upon discharge, they may want to live at a transitional living facility that helps create a safe environment while in outpatient treatment.

Intensive Outpatient
This program offers clients an eight week track. Sessions are held three days a week. Individual therapy is provided, along with weekly group therapy. Family therapy is offered if needed. Clients will focus on their goals and may meet with a psychiatrist.

Was there many years ago and the subpar care that I received there still haunts me. None, and I mean none, of the staff were caring. They belittled me, didn’t treat me with respect or compassion or empathy or kindness the entire 2 times that I was there. I would never want anyone to have to endure the unpleasant experience that I had there. They also didn’t treat my withdrawal from alcohol properly as my blood pressure was extremely high every day that I was there, and I literally had to plead with them to medicate me so I would not have a seizure. What is the point of going in hospital for detox if they can’t even provide proper medical care?

The biggest waste of time and $60k. I was a patient in the 28 day residential program for depression and personality disorder. Not only did I leave feeling completely failed by the system, I watched other patients leave after 28 days feeling scared, even more broken and disregulated and given a pill with dbt skills to solve the problem. There wasn’t a single week that therapeutic classes and activities were cancelled because no one showed up to lead them. The food is a disgrace along with the horrible and rude kitchen staff. I was shamed and treated poorly for needing a gluten free diet and 5 out of 6 times was given pure gluten to eat Knowing I couldn’t eat it. This prestigious overpriced joke of a rehab has been the biggest waste of my time and money. I came into the program so optimistic and ready to heal myself and learn dbt. I gave the experience everything i had left after surviving a stroke at 29 and left feeling completely stuck, disappointed and frustrated with this overall horrible experience.

I feel as if I expected more. I am not sure what is so fabulous about this place. Quite underwhelming. I think that expanding access to the public beyond the stepford wife clones to a more ethnically , culturally and financially diverse patient population WITHOUT introducing cultural competency into the training for the staff is a waste of money and everyone’s time. PennMed has a class called “culture matters”. That was 20 years ago. Get with the program Silver Hill. I am having a hard time understanding what is so fabulous about this institution. Must be the pool. Because it isn’t the providers. OMG!!! Talk about out of touch with the real world. I see Marie Antionette loving it here. I think that Silver Hill should stick with what it knows and who it knows and understands. Period. That’s it. No one noticed that you were gone. You can go back inside now. I don’t think that broadening the access to those who you don’t relate to helps no one. I think that they look for issues where there aren’t any.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

The Outpatient Addiction Program is a six week intensive outpatient program that helps people struggling with addiction to break the cycle of relapse and maintain their sobriety. Addictions to all substances are treated including heroin, opioid pain relievers, alcohol, benzodiazepines, marijuana, cocaine, and other stimulants. In addition, we also identify and treat any underlying psychiatric disorders, such as anxiety or depression. Patients are initially assessed by our Addiction Psychiatrist to determine their stability and appropriateness for outpatient addiction treatment. This assessment includes an intake interview, collaboration with community-based clinicians, and review of each patient’s support network. Outpatient detoxification is offered as part of the Outpatient Addiction Program when safe and necessary. During detoxification, patients meet daily, Monday through Friday, with our clinical team to ensure their smooth and safe transition into recovery.

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Silver Hill provides Intensive Outpatient Programs for adolescents and adults who are able to live at home yet require addiction and/or psychological treatment and skill building to function effectively. Patients return to the hospital for two or three times a week for three hours of group therapy led by licensed clinicians. The clinicians working in the DBT IOPs are DBT intensively trained. Silver Hill Hospital is in network with many insurance companies for intensive outpatient treatment. All of the programs, except the Outpatient Addiction IOP, require that patients maintain a therapeutic relationship with a community-based therapist and psychiatrist for medication management.

Inpatient treatment is an essential first step in the recovery from mental illness and addiction. The average length of stay varies based on diagnosis. For detoxification, the length of stay is 3 to 5 days; for psychiatric treatment the length of stay varies from 7 to 14 days. Their secure inpatient units provide a high staff-to-patient ratio of psychiatrists, nurses and social workers. Silver Hill Hospital is in network with many insurance companies for inpatient treatment.

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

Silver Hill's Transitional Living Programs (TLP), for either adults or adolescents, provide continuing on-campus treatment within comfortable living facilities devoted just to our TLP patients and their programs. These programs are designed to help patients continue their recovery process until they are ready to return home for further community-based treatment. The minimum length of stay for this phase of treatment is 4 weeks, and some patients extend their treatment. This program is self-pay.

Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) offers short-term intensive rehab for those who don't require 24-hour care. PHP treatment can serve as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization or a step-down option after being released from a hospital or residential program. A partial hospitalization program can provide medication management, relapse prevention strategies, and behavioral therapy interventions. With daily sessions lasting up to 8 hours for up to 5 days a week, the duration can vary with the average being 90 days.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Connecticut provides the professional support that is often necessary to break free from drug dependency. With proper treatment, individuals can make changes that restore balance and health to their lives and achieve long-term recovery.

Often we find many of our young patients have more than one diagnosis. These “co-occurring disorders” require a special understanding and corresponding treatment. Co-occurrence may be a combination of a variety of disorders. Often—though not always—there may be a combination of addiction and psychiatric disorders present, for example, depression combined with substance abuse or an eating disorder. Because Silver Hill is a true psychiatric hospital, not just a rehabilitation center, we are uniquely qualified to provide comprehensive care for patients who need treatment for more than one disorder. Adults and adolescents have different needs so Silver Hill Hospital provides separate programs and facilities within the hospital campus so we can focus on the unique requirements each of these age groups. Patients who are acutely ill and who require intensive psychiatric and nursing supervision are treated in one of our adult inpatient units. Treatments there tend to be medically oriented and the stay is typically short Patients who are ready for more psychological and behavioral interventions can be treated in our residential Transitional Living Programs, where there is more openness and the treatment course is longer.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

In Connecticut you'll find a range of substance abuse rehabs providing effective and individualized care, which dramatically increases long-term recovery outcomes. These programs include various levels of care, including inpatient, medically assisted detox, and partial hospitalization programs. You'll receive a comprehensive assessment and individualized treatment plan, to determine the appropriate level of care and evidence-based interventions. You can expect individual and group therapy, skills classes, and relapse prevention training.

Inpatient and outpatient addiction treatment addresses both the physical and mental aspects of chemical dependency. Naturally, mental health services are provided during that treatment process and may include individual and group counseling and relapse prevention education.

Programs

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Silver Hill Hospital's Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Program is a highly structured form of behavioral therapy that teaches patients the skills necessary to regulate emotions, control self-destructive behaviors and improve interpersonal relations. It was developed for patients with severe personality disorders, including borderline personality disorders, but is also used to treat anxiety and substance use. Inpatient treatment is an essential first step in the recovery from mental illness and all patients admitted to the DBT Program must first be admitted to our Inpatient Program to help assure the patient’s stabilization and to determine the best treatment options to follow. The second stage of treatment is our Transitional Living Program where patients live on the Silver Hill campus in a house that is staffed 24-hours a day with DBT-trained personnel. It is one of the very few such programs of its kind available in the United States. Most team members are intensively DBT-trained and all participate in a weekly consultation team. The length of stay for this phase of treatment is 4 weeks, and some patients extend their treatment beyond this minimum. This program is self-pay – a small portion of the program may be covered by insurance. Their staff will help you determine if you have this benefit.

Silver Hill Hospital’s Eating Disorders Treatment Program is exceptional. This unique treatment of eating disorders offers the safety of a higher level of care with fluid and uninterrupted movement to a less restrictive and more advanced treatment for eating disorders. This distinct eating disorder program allows us to respond safely, flexibly, and effectively to the emotional needs of our patients. As a psychiatric hospital, we are especially able to treat patients who present with serious co-occurring psychiatric problems, such as mood and anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, and personality disorders, along with the eating disorder symptoms. These co-occurring psychiatric disorders often drive and complicate eating disorder symptoms; treating these psychiatric disorders is essential for successful and lasting eating disorder recovery.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Very low standard of care They made lots of mistakes in gathering my medical history. I read my chart. Catastrophic distortions of my words and things taken out of context. Very little time provided with actual physicians to clarify my symptoms. Or correct their distortions of my words. My assigned physician went in vacation 2 days in. Misdiagnosis which led to threat of forced care because of their mistakes. Needless overmedicated. Still recovering from the side effects. Perpetually understaffed Very harmful. Stay away. I’m too afraid too say more

Please do not send anyone here for treatment, especially if you’re a part of haven and trying to get your license back. First of all, when I was here for a 28 day program for substance use disorder, I disclosed to the admitting doctor I had an eating disorder that is still active. My blood pressure was low on several occasions while there and I told them I was throwing up, and so they imposed a rule that I couldn’t be near a bathroom for an hour after I ate. My psychiatrist 5 days in goes on vacation unexpectedly and another psychiastrist takes over. He told me that I have to go to another program where they can treat both the substance abuse and eating disorder. I talked with my therapist the same day and she seems upset and after I complained I didn’t want to leave, she yelled and said “you have to leave!” And was defensive . I had been open with her about the ED and she must’ve not realized I should be somewhere else, and she probably got in trouble for it. During Covid I guess they closed down the house for women with ED’s, so they probably shouldn’t have admitted me. On top of that, they claimed I was throwing up behind the trees and bushes on my way back from the dining hall, and that I can’t be trusted. That was a huge lie. I couldn’t believe they could make stuff up like that. Right before that debacle happened, a psychologist did a (which was $5k, that was not disclosed to my dad) psychological evaluation. A year later I read it, and it said I was all these terrible things, with little evidence or reasoning to back it up. Somewhere it said that information was “gathered by the father” but when I later talked to my dad he said he only told them the truth and nothing that would allude to whatever that psychologist wrote. My dad, while I was in treatment, wrote a letter stating the reason he should get a refund since I wouldn’t be staying the entire 28 days due to their negligence, and was very upset with them. He was a personal injury attorney and had experience with medical malpractice and I think he made that known to them which may have pissed them off I don’t know. A few years later I had a relapse, got treatment somewhere else, and went back to Silver Hill for the IOP. I went back because I wanted help. I didn’t quite put the pieces together at that point either. I told them about my experience at work and how I fell into a deep depression. The sessions at Silver Hill were not helpful at all. They used information from my medical record and integrated it in the sessions to make me feel like shit. Fast forward (towards the end of the program), I was in the bathroom one day Nd this lady was crying , and I asked what was wrong and she said “oh just trauma”. I don’t even remember if she was fake crying but guess what happened a few days later? I was in the waiting room and the same lady came to talk to me and she told me she worked for Silver Hill and is a trauma therapist. She explained that silver hill has an excellent program for people with cptsd and ptsd, and that it costs $100k. She really thought I was sold to the idea I’d drop $100k. Unreal. It’s almost as if they knew the consequences of submitting that psych eval to haven, and anticipated id need trauma therapy. I can’t prove it but silver hill is shady. If you’re a celebrity or a ceo of a billion dollar company they’ll treat you well. And if you’re a liability in any way, especially if you threaten to sue, they are spiteful. This experience and those test results changed the trajectory of my life, and not for the better. I have such little trust in mental health providers now because of this facility. And it prevents me from getting the treatment I need.
