About Richmond University Medical Center – Main Hospital

Located in Staten Island, New York, the Richmond University Medical Center – Main Hospital is the thriving heart of the RUMC network. They provide inpatient and outpatient substance abuse care for adults and adolescents ages 3 to 18.

As their main campus, it boasts over 440 beds to provide a full range of care. Along with psychiatric care for mood and behavioral disorders, they also offer emergency health services, elective and emergency surgeries, and advanced wound care. Their inpatient programs have 30 adult beds and 10 adolescent beds.

The RUMC Main Hospital is the only inpatient psychiatric care center for adolescents in the region. They provide around the clock care for children experiencing mental health disorders or addiction. The caring team creates a loving and safe environment for adolescents to heal in.

As part of their addiction treatment program, they offer medication management, individual and group therapy, family education, and electroconvulsive therapy. ECT uses controlled electrical currents to make certain parts of your brain fire rapidly. This can help those areas work more effectively, helping you overcome medication resistant mental health concerns that contribute to substance use.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Couples Therapy

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Family Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Individual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

I went here for almost a year, and the people that worked here treated me well. They could improve lots of things, starting with the accommodations, but they are good.

Since im at a real hospital today, it reminded me of the horror story I went through at RUMC. I was treated there for meningitis. I was repeatedly told it can't be meningitis until I refused to leave without a spinal tap. They then agreed I had meningitis labeling it "viral." (I disagreed)I was put in a room with bloodstained (and other stains) blankets and sheets. I repeatedly asked for replacements and got ones that were of the same nature. Days later I was told I was waiting on lab results. Then one doctor came in and told me they sent the wrong samples to be tested and had to resend. Then it was sent to the wrong place and had to be resent. Then it was being tested for the wrong thing so had to be retested. I was discharged with a diagnosis of viral meningitis (which didn't seem right) and they admitted it was a guess because my results still weren't back 2 weeks later. I was sent home with viral meds. Upon discharge, I told them my hands and leg and tongue were shaking terribly. Suddenly they came back with new discharge papers and I realized some incredibly false information under my diagnosis. My diagnosis was all the way at the bottom but above it was a bunch of stuff saying i was a cocaine addict and alcoholic. I've never done cocaine. I am an occasionally lightweight drinker at best. My bloodwork was taken daily and never had anything like that in it. (I checked because I couldn't understand why it said this). I told the nurse this info was absolutely false and I wanted it removed. She assured me that all I had to do was call and tell them it's wrong and it would be simple. For months I argued with RUMC about this, even speaking to patient advocates. They kept telling me the doc who wrote that wasn't a resident doc and they'd have to approve it and they weren't there. I repeatedly asked to be put in contact with that doc but to no avail. I then showed up at the hospital and still got no help. I then reached out to Alexander Lutz who corresponded with me via email and fb a few times before blocking me because I wouldn't let it go. Well let me tell u the why they did this part. My lab results ended up negative. The infectious diseases and neuro admitted it wasn't viral and told me to "just redo the spinal tap if it was so important to know" as if that's a simple risk free process. They knew they misdiagnosed me and therefore gave me the wrong meds which caused the tremors. The doctor said this herself and then tried to deny it and the nurse actually pulled me to the side and apologized for how I was being treated. I ended up spending 2 years in physical, speech and occupational therapy. I had to be evaluated for ALS, MS and Parkinson's because it was so bad. The tremors have never gone away. Not only did RUMC take no accountability whatsoever , they simply did not care. They blamed on drug use labeling me a severe addict and alcoholic in "early remission ." This was truly the most humiliating, frustrating, dehumanizing experience I have ever had in my entire life. 3 years later, it still upsets me. The shakes I have are so bad it's embarrassing to go out to dinner cause I can't even sip water or put salsa on chips or anything like that without looking drooping it. This hospital treated me like garbage and I'll never forget it. And I will never let it go Alex.

I guess it was our lucky day. We walked into the emergency room and everyone was extremely helpful. Doctors were on the top of their game and kept an eye on my son.

Very unprofessional Grace Stella refused to properly display her badge in which is a violation of my patient s rights which led to her physically assaulting me and discharging me without proper care instructions for my hip injury. Grace Stella gaslighted me and told me that I had no hip injury after I literally had X-rays done by Matthew who transported me and conducted the X-ray Grace threatened to have me arrested for trespassing because I told her that it is a violation of my patients right to discharge me with out provuding me proper care instructions.

I came to the emergency room on Friday to get care for my infant child. I didn t have anyone to watch my toddler they really wanting me to have someone pick her up, but I couldn t. They accommodated me & let my toddler stay with me. Only for a social worker to come talk to me this evening asking me to have somebody come pick up my kid so I can go on the 3 floor with my infant or she would call acs on me. Well my doctor came in I ask them they gonna call acs as on me because the social worker told me but they knew nothing about it & we re planning on accommodating me again with my child but I was so emotional so I call my family breaking down. My family came less than 35 mins to pick up my child. Only for the social worker to go behind my back & call acs on me. She was planning on acs taking my child to some strange to watch while I stay in the hospital with my infant. It s already hard being a single mother with a new born baby. I m hurt & all off of with that social worker did to me. I want to seek legal action because it s unacceptable acs is only call for child endangerment & my child wasn t at all also they made it seem like my infant need it to be on the 3 floor but she s getting the same care she could of gotten in the emergency room. I went to the hospital for help only to be look at and judge & get call acs on. Don t go here take your child to another hospital. Plus the social worker told me they not a daycare & my other child wasn t a patient but neither am I a patient but I have to be here with my child. They wanting me to abandoned my child I been crying off & on throughout the day.

My child did not receive the proper treatment for a head wound. This healthcare center failed to perform an imaging test like an X-ray, CT scan, or MRI to assess the extent of the fracture and any associated injuries, such as bleeding or swelling of the brain on my son after a fall. If he received adequate care immediately he may not have a noticeable indent on his head. We came to the ER and wasn't even given an ice pack. The bed side manner from the training doctor lacked compassion. I highly recommend you don't come to this location for emergencies. I gave an additional star because the ladies that draw blood (Barbara) and administrator and staff that perform sonograms on the 4th floor are qualified trained professionals.

Everything about this place and care is a joke, spent almost 7 hours here yesterday and didn t see a real Dr!! Came in abt 12:45 pm and around 1:30 saw PA Barbara for her to tell me she was going to review my labs from when I was in pre op earlier that morning. She never came back until 6:30pm! The treatment gets better as I was sent for a sono which no one told me I was getting. The transporter took me to 1st floor and put the break on the bed and walked away. I was left in a hallway with no other person for 35 minutes. After 35 minutes a woman in a surgical cap was walking towards the steps and I begged her for help. Turns out the transporter didn t inform the sono tech I was there and was pretty much left there to rot. I was left in hallway of ER as bed cubicals were becoming available thru out the day like a dog. Their lack of compassion as medical professionals are disgusting and I witnessed workers joking around and throwing things at each other all while patients are suffering in pain in the emergency room. To my surprise I left 2 messages with patient relations and what a joke they haven t even reached out. They are not even worth the 1 star. The person who runs this hospital should be ashamed of themselves and their staff

I can not believe the change that took place over the years from when this hospital was St. Vincent s. I had both of my children at St. Vincent s and my experience was a great from Labor and Delivery to Maternity. My daughter just gave birth to her baby at the same hospital now called Rumsi. I stayed with my daughter the entire time from beginning to end. Labor and delivery was fine. After she had the baby she was sent to maternity and it went all down hill from there. What a dreary Maternity ward that became. The air conditioning was broken and it was incredibly uncomfortable. My daughter was left alone to figure out how to care for her baby, she is a first time mom. ID bracelets that were put on her baby were so tight that it actually caused cuts on her little ankles. When the charge nurse was called to address this , she refused to remove the ID tag because she isn t aloud to. I took it upon myself to remove her ID tags , only to see her bruised and cut ankles. My daughter asked for the Nurse Manager to let her know what happened. The charge nurse told the Nurse manager that the baby s bruises were from dry skin. That was not at all true and I have pictures that clearly show this. They released my daughter and her baby with the baby s tear duct clogged. There was so much discharge oozing from the baby s eyes that she was struggling to open them. My daughter had to go from the hospital to her pediatrician to get the baby the proper care for her eyes. Anytime she called a nurse for her baby there was always a 20 minute wait. My daughter was in tears and so worried about the baby s eyes, after waiting 20 minutes for a nurse to come only to tell her she had to get the other nurse and no one ever came back. My daughter had to call again and ask for a nurse a second time.As far as care for my daughter, that was horrible as well. She had a problem with her IV and that also took forever to be taken care of. She wasn t given stool softeners even though she was unable to go to the bathroom. She wasn t brought any clean supplies for the baby unless she asked for them. She had a natural birth and they ran out of numbing cream. There were times my daughter called for a nurse and they never came. Her husband had to go to the nurses station to get the nurse himself, only to find a bunch of them on their phones. Another instance was when she called a nurse, the nurse couldn t hear her and just stopped answering and didn t even go to the room to make sure all was ok. I can go on and on. I just can not believe what this hospital became.I would like to add that labor and delivery was very good. All the nurses and doctors were very attentive, kind and professional. They all worked as a team and really showed that they cared about their patient.
