About Rensselaer County Mental Health

The Rensselaer County Mental Health Department is a public health care service in Troy, New York. This particular location is the Mental Health Department’s main administrative office but it also functions as their Unified Services Child and Adolescent Clinic.

This clinic serves clients who are kids, adolescents and young adults. They treat from the ages of birth to 21 years old so they help a lot of people who are starting to struggle with drug and alcohol addiction. They treat a wide variety of mental health conditions and needs but substance use disorder is one of them.

Your treatment here or your child’s treatment will be individualized to what you need for recovery. Typically you can expect individual therapy and group therapy sessions too. They also have family therapy here too because they recognize how important a family is in recovery, especially for a young person.

Accessibility is a big priority here because they aim to make mental health care available throughout the county. As part of this, they have telehealth services as an option if you don’t have transportation or you have other challenges with getting to the treatment center. They also have Spanish-speaking therapists on staff and they have interpreters available too. Finally, because this is the Mental Health Department’s head office, they can connect you to other resources too like their peer recovery counselors.

Some clients here say that this clinic has been a great help to their families and their mental health. On the other hand, there are also clients who say that the treatment center was unhelpful and they weren’t satisfied with the referral process so your experience here might vary.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

couples-therapy iconCouples Therapy

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

These people have always gone the extra mile to help us. My family has many people with spectrum issues and other psych help needed, and they've worked hard to assemble a team to support us.

Couldn't put 0 stars.....They only take children up to 21 so they gave me another number to call. I didn't mind that but the place they had me call does not take patients in Troy Ny. They should have already had this known.. Instead i was on the phone for 5 minutes before they told me we don't accept patients for troy. Just call Behavioral Health Outpatient and save yourself the hassle.....

The supervisor of the Rensselaer clinic Abigail is on a power trip. She lies and manipulates. I severely regressed due to her therapy. Then when i requested another therapist she refused. I asked to be a meds only client and refused sessions with her and she promptly discharged me forcing me to go to the ER to get meds I'd been on for years.
