About Putnam Hospital, part of Nuvance Health

Now part of Nuvance Health, Putnam Hospital provides primary care and behavioral health care for children, teens, and adults in Carmel, New York. Their Behavioral Health Services Department offers inpatient treatment and a partial hospitalization program for clients with mood and anxiety disorders, substance abuse, and related conditions. They accept self pay, private insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid. They also offer financial assistance.

Their inpatient program is for clients who need immediate stabilization to keep themselves and others safe. This team can provide crisis intervention services like psychiatric evaluations, medication management, recreational therapy, and group therapy to help clients find relief and stability.

Once clients stabilize, they may move into the outpatient program, which allows them to attend treatment during the day and return home at night. The treatment plan they follow will be based on their own needs, but some of the services available here include individual and group counseling, classes related to addiction and recovery, social skills training, and dialectical behavioral therapy. If clients need to take medicine to treat their condition, they’ll work with a psychiatrist to manage those prescriptions. Most clients attend outpatient treatment five days a week for up to six weeks.

While some former clients rank this facility highly, one client was disappointed to find that their doctor left and they were never assigned to another provider. They wished patient loyalty was higher and urged for better communication.

The billing department is awful. Nobody there knows how to do their job. I started receiving a bill from two years ago that i've already paid, and when I spoke to them, and told them that I was told I had to do their job for them and find out where my payments went. Now i'm receiving a bill for payments that were already paid, and when I try and put my account and phone, it says the account can not be found.

Accepted Insurance

Putnam Hospital, part of Nuvance Health works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Clients in rehab aftercare programs receive a customized portfolio of services designed to promote their sustained sobriety. These clients have completed high-level treatment, are typically exiting detox and/or intensive inpatient care and are reintegrating into their home, workplace, and community. Rehab aftercare services address addiction disease as a chronic condition requiring continuing care. Clients typically work with case managers and recovery teams to access necessary resources, such as peer coaching and 12 step program induction support.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.
hearing-impaired-program thumbnail image
Hearing Impaired Program
A sensory disability, such as hearing impairment, can compound the challenges of addiction recovery. Drug rehabs that are specially designed to accommodate the needs of persons with hearing impairments will include special accessibility features and accommodations to make treatment as comfortable and effective as possible. This may include access to American Sign Language interpreters.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Introduced in 1983, motivational interviewing is a method to help clients commit to change. It's based on the philosophy that change is hard, and clients must explore their own options and come to their own conclusions rather than receive warnings or advice from the therapist.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

I would not recommend being a patient at Putnam Hospital as the nurses will steal your belongings and money while you're under anesthesia for life saving surgery. And when you report the theft of your money to security at the hospital you're met with hostility and security guards removing you from the premises when you did absolutely nothing wrong at all. And when you ask for the names of the nurses and doctors that were in charge of your care so you can go to the police and file a police report you're denied the names. If you want to have your personal property stolen while being a patient here I highly recommend Putnam Hospital,

There is a reason why there are so many low ratings. I was experiencing stroke-like symptoms. All I said to the ER nurse was that the sheet was a little dirty and could you please change it. She yelled at me and said THIS SHEET IS NOT DIRTY, WE JUST CHANGED THEM She was cold, lacked human dignity and gave no smile or eye contact. As sick as I was feeling, I got up and left the ER. That made my situation worse but I wasn t going to stay there and absorb that type of unjustified and unprofessional behavior. I should have expected that sort of treatment once I saw the ring in her nose and she being white and entitled and me a man of color. I wrote a letter of complaint and of course it was dismissed and her behavior unaccounted for.Guess we will have more of the same if you-know-who gets elected this November. I hope I never have to use this hospital again.

The patient care in the emergency room was horrible. I went in with COVID and very high blood pressure. They left me there for five hours with the blood pressure cup half off. When I inquired about help, I was told over and over I would get help in a minute and each time nobody showed. I felt like I was an inconvenience. After nine hours in the emergency room I was admitted. With that said, the care I received from the care team, once I was admitted, was amazing. I felt cared for. It was exceptional. They deserve a separate great rating. If I could I would give the emergency room a zero and my care team, Joan, Leala, and Briana more than a hundred.

One of the worst hospitals in the nation, US NEWS HEALTH. I have been here for care and the staff has a " don't have time for this, can't be bothered attitude". The equipment they use for MRI & Other testing is out of date.

ER is horrible. The personnel claim to be busy, but I did not see much activity. My husband and I were there 7 hours one night after he was transported there by ambulance. The second time we were there for 6 hours. Patients left because they needed care but did not want to wait anymore.

Putnam hospital is one of the worse hospitals I ve ever known. A family of mine went there for treatment. They were asked not to do certain things and still proceeded to do things their way. The staff are very unprofessional with lack of sensitivity to the patients. They are so quick to pump people up with a bunch medications just to keep the patients out of their hair, rather than doing the proper research and extensive testing to see what medications work properly for that person/persons. They work against and not for you.

Response from the owner3 months ago
