About Peninsula Outpatient Center – Knox

Peninsula Outpatient Center is part of the Covenant Health network. They’re located in Knoxville, Tennessee. They can help you with any alcohol and drug issues by providing you with intensive outpatient programs. There’s also a track specifically for women. They accept selected Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans.

When you’re enrolled in their outpatient program, you’ll partake in sessions that are three to four hours long. You’ll be attending sessions for four or five weekdays per week. Each session is a mix of group therapy and education classes. You’ll explore your mental health history. This can be stressful, but you’ll get support from your peers and your counselors. You can learn from them and share experiences. That way, you’ll be able to address any underlying conditions that fuel your substance abuse. These issues can include depression, anxiety and family troubles.

There are also specific programs for seniors and teens. These programs are for inpatient care, but you’ll have to go to the Peninsula Hospital to be admitted. If you have any acute issues, you might also be referred to their inpatient center in Blount County.

I have adhd and I went there and they tortured me with all this inappropriate medicine which ended up making me worse. The computer system got corrupted while I was going there and the hackers changed my diagnosis to Schizoaffective Disorder and my doctor had just retired. The new Doctor didn't know what to do. To him, everything was a delusion or hallucinations. He finally came around and was fixing things, when the people who hacked the computers started harassing me at home online. These things really happen in this world. People aren't hallucinating or delusional when they experience harassment and espionage and terrorism. Your in denial and not paying attention if you don't notice that the news says this stuff all the time. Not all news is fake.

Accepted Insurance

Peninsula Outpatient Center – Knox works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Inpatient rehabs are designed principally for clients who require intensive supervision and support, including clients who have just completed detox, clients in early recovery, and clients at an elevated risk of relapse. Inpatient treatment helps clients stabilize following detox and prepares them to step-down into outpatient and/or community-based care. Clients reside at the facility for the duration of their program and engage in extensive addiction counseling and education. Many programs also offer evidence-based complementary therapies.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
child-program thumbnail image
Child Program
The providers who specialize in the children's rehab space understand the specialized needs that this population faces. School-based and social services such as tutoring and family counseling are often central to treatment. Child programs may also address the needs of youth experiencing substance abuse in the home, including a parent's or sibling's addiction.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

I've been going here for years and the lady I see, Julie Thurmer is so kind, listens intently to what I'm saying and actually seems to genuinely care about whatever I'm talking about. She's worked with me on all my meds until we found the perfect mix and single handedly has made me not hate going to the doctor as much. The people at the front desk are always so nice and friendly, and I've not had a bad experience one and I've been there literally dozens of times.

I have to remind them about prescription refills for my son over and over again. After he has a follow up appointment with the provider saying he'd send the refills in, we still end it up with no refills. Its impossible to reach the nurse on the phone about it.

Absolutely horrendous. I was taken here as a teen and now as an adult I'm being treated for PTSD from my time during inpatient. I was handcuffed and taken from Bristol VA up to this place in Knoxville (a 2hr trip) in the back of a police van. Handcuffed the entire 2 hours. While there I was only given uncrustables to eat and the "therapist" refused to help me through my mental health issues (bi-polar type 1) and told me my issues were all due to me dressing "gothic". Yeah, apparently bi-polar is just due to how you dress? The staff laughed at and belittled me during a breakdown and I was sedated and restrained for just sitting on my bed crying. They refused to let my parents get me out, after finding out how I was being treated, I think they ended up having to threaten a lawsuit. If you or your child need inpatient treatment go to Woodridge in Johnson City TN, of course none of these facilities are going to be perfect but Woodridge has been the best as both a teen and adult. Both with mental health as well as addiction treatment. Peninsula needed and still needs to be shut down. I still hear horror stories about this place years later.

Just treated poorly by pretty much everyone. I thought my therapist and psychiatrist were nice and helpful at first, but everything went bad so fast. Even the front desk people are incredibly rude, and unapologetic for mistakes that they make.
