About Orange County Health & Psychology Associates Inc. (OCHPA)

Orange County Health & Psychology Associates is also called OCHPA. They offer mental health care services for teens and adults in Irvine, California. Here, you’ll find an intensive outpatient program with different therapies and treatments to fit your needs. They accept self pay and are in network with most private insurance plans.

I like that this facility offers separate outpatient counseling services for mental health issues and co-occurring conditions, including substance use disorders. This way, you can visit one or both sessions throughout the week depending on your needs. Once you start the program, you’ll be in it for about 10 weeks.

There’s a team of licensed clinicians on staff who can help you understand more about your addiction, work through some of your triggers, and develop healthy coping skills. They focus on peer based support groups to help you build connection and accountability. Some of the topics you’ll cover include anger management, mindfulness, recovery motivation and work life balance.

When your treatment plan is over, they’ll coordinate with your insurance company to make sure you can transition smoothly back to your individual therapist or psychiatrist.

One former client says the care he’s received here has helped him live some of the best days of his life. Another client says her therapist is amazing and goes above and beyond to help her.

Sheer indifference, unorganized, antiquated, and overall incompetent doesn t begin to describe this facility and the people who run it. Don t get it twisted, this place exists simply to charge up your insurance and squeeze as much out of you as possible with the bare minimum effort going in to actually care and help. I don t wish the U.S. mental healthcare system on my worst enemies and this place is one such reason.

Accepted Insurance

Orange County Health & Psychology Associates Inc. (OCHPA) works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

Dual diagnosis refers when an individual is struggling with mental health issues and substance abuse. Substances usually can worsen mental health conditions if they already exist, impacting one's moods, thoughts and behaviors. Dual diagnosis symptoms can vary from person to person.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members. Groups are separated into three programs for 2 different age groups; for adults (18 and up) and adolescents (12-17).

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy is a structured approach used by therapists to help you heal from a past traumatic event. Your therapist works with you to identify the traumatic memory and process the information so you experience emotional healing and a sense of safety and stability.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Substances can prevent the absorption of nutrients and cause damage to your body's systems. Nutrition therapy in California addresses the deficiencies in vitamins and minerals that are caused by substance abuse.

I had an excellent experience with this office. The service provided was exceptional, and the care and attention to detail were top-notch. I felt heard and understood, and the sessions were incredibly helpful. I highly recommend OC health to anyone seeking professional and compassionate psychological support.

I've been a client of Alan for several years and can't thank him enough. Nearing the end of my journey, we switched to telehealth. I was skeptical in beginning since I no longer live in California, however, the transition was a breeze. I appreciate Alan's style in my care with the perfect balance of professionalism and compassion. My time with OCHPA has brought me such a long way, I'm grateful that I sought care here. Highly recommend Alan Artin if you don t know where to start.

This has had to be one of the worst medical office experiences I have had in recent memory.I scheduled an appointment as a new patient. When I arrived, there were no staff present in the office, and when staff eventually emerged, they all have their backs facing towards where patients enter and sit - a truly welcoming environment! After 15-minutes passed my appointment time, I try to speak to the receptionist - who is, mind you, sitting far away from where I am speaking - about when my appointment is scheduled, thinking I might've shown up at the wrong time. She confirmed that I was correct, but that there was another patient in front of me waiting to be seen. Given how long this whole experience was taking, it looked like I would've been seen at least 2-hours after my scheduled time. I left shortly after. This is completely unacceptable and shows a critical failure in how this office schedules their appointments. It clearly shows that this medical office has no respect for their patients' time. I highly advise you look elsewhere for your medical needs.

They make you feel a million times worse, it s like your goal is to make me suicidal? You re incredibly heartless, some people shouldn t be therapists and in fact need a therapist themselves and to get put on 20 different meds because I can t believe the insane things that were said. Since you apparently don t know the definition of a therapist, here: a person who HELPS people deal with mental or emotional problems by talking about those problems. WHY ARE YOU DOING THE EXACT OPPOSITE.

I have been receiving care for a serious illness for many years. The help OCHPA and Dr. Janet Smith has given me has allowed me to live the best days of my life. I feel like a whole person again, in control of my emotions better. I would not be the same person without them.
