About NorthKey Community Care

NorthKey Community Care has multiple locations in Kentucky. The care center on Madison Avenue in Covington has outpatient substance use and mental health treatment services. They also have some primary care services as well as care coordinators, peer support specialists, and employment and housing specialists. They treat children and adults at the Covington location. They won’t turn anyone away, even if they don’t have insurance and aren’t sure how they can pay. They offer discounted services and a sliding scale fee schedule. They also take most major health insurance and that includes Medicare and Medicaid.

All of the programs at this location are on an outpatient basis. This location offers counseling services but also has psychiatric services if you need medication management for substance use or mental health issues. They also have medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD).

You can attend an intensive outpatient program for adults (IOP). The IOP includes education about the disease and its stages. Education covers topics such as codependency and relapse prevention. You’ll work on learning new and better coping skills so you don’t feel the need to turn to substances in times of stress. You’ll learn to break the connection between leisure activities and alcohol or drugs.

The IOP also has group therapy, anger management, and individual therapy. In individual therapy, you’ll work on not only improving your mental health but also developing a good recovery plan. If appropriate, your family will be included in therapy and in your treatment plan since addiction is a family disease.

Former clients have mixed feelings. Some thought the program and people were really great while others were not as enthusiastic. Some people mentioned that the clinic wasn’t good about answering the phone at the front desk.

So far, reasonable. I came in for counseling (alcohol/peer), and so far it has worked in my favor. Hopefully today I get the assistance I need from North Key, and corresponding group/entities. I think that community support just comes down to collaboration, courage and charity. Hopeful and optimistic..

I absolutely hate this place....The last two years I had a lot of trouble with my mental health. The hospital sent me to North Key. North Key is a joke. They send you to the location in Fort Wright for intake and to explain why you're there. Then they send you to the location on Madison to see psychiatrist for medicine and a therapist. When meeting the psychiatrist (Ashley M) I just got the feeling of being rushed and that they didn't care. They just was like here's your medicine now get out type of attitude. The therapist was the same way. She didn't listen and she just kept trying to put me through different programs I didn't want to go through. She just wasn't willing to listen and that's really all I wanted. The therapist also referred me to a former drug addict (Tiffany Picklesimer) as peer support who's been through similar things. After talking to the peer support I didn't see how we were going through the same thing at all. She was a former drug addict and I was just a struggling mom. She also kept asking to come into my home and I thought that was just beyond weird. She also would not stop calling my phone and it was on a daily basis multiple times a day. So I eventually blocked her number and stopped going to North Key because it was honestly making things so much worse. Best decision I've ever made.

I have no addiction to anything. I struggle mentally. I went to north key off and on from 2007 to 1014. And now that I am struggling again I am going back. In my case as I am sure is the same with a few others, I wasn't giving it a chance. I fought back on everything from what was being said to my appointment times. I didn't realize I was working against them and myself. I would give up stop going for awhile. But I needed help so I went back every time. I had everything from a social worker, therapist, employment, housing. I went through it all. And when I gave it a chance it all worked. It was hard and there was set backs. But with their help I was able to overcome my issues. I have social anxiety, agoraphobia along with what comes with most mental issues. Depression and so on. There is a time I could not leave my house for months at a time. They stayed right there next to me. Called me out when I started sliding and gently helps me stand. There was a few minutes, and a few people that disrespectful. You have that everywhere you go. It took me changing therapist aver 4 times. But I didn't give up thanks to them not giving up on me. I have a good job and a nice home. I have a car and enjoy spending time outdoors with my friends and family. None of that would have happened without north key.

Accepted Insurance

NorthKey Community Care works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient programs are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare. NorthKey offers outpatient substance use services in several levels of frequency and intensity to facilitate the development and implementation of your personal recovery plan.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient programs are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs. NorthKey offers intensive outpatient services for adults who are using alcohol and/or drugs. Their intensive outpatient program follows evidence-based treatment protocols and is based on the best methods of promoting sobriety and recovery.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Case Management helps you manage your recovery plan and also helps you access other needed resources in the community. Their case manager meets with you to help you evaluate your service need, to help you develop your individualized treatment and recovery plan and acts as a coach to encourage you along your plan. Your case manager meets with you at scheduled times, helps monitor your progress and quality of services received and assists you in making connections with other supportive community resources important for your recovery process.
sober-living iconSober Living Homes
Sober Living Houses (SLHs), aka sober homes or halfway houses, are safe, substance-free, supportive living facilities for those recovering from substance abuse. Ideal for those who've just been through inpatient or outpatient treatment, SLHs are supervised environments with rules that support sobriety, such as curfews, shared chores, and therapeutic meetings. Residents are also often trained on life skills and coping skills to make it easier to transition into society. SLHs also provide a strong sense of community that can lead to the kind of deep and lasting connections with other sober individuals that supports a new, healthy lifestyle.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Kentucky often starts with detox, then includes inpatient or outpatient treatment, and continues with aftercare support. Specific methods used during each of these phases varies, but often include individual and group counseling, medication, and recreational therapies.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive behavioral therapy in Kentucky involves learning to recognize unhealthy thinking patterns and developing problem solving skills to cope with life's challenges. It will help you have greater confidence in your abilities so you can change your patterns of behavior and break free from substance abuse.

Typically, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) in Kentucky involves four types of therapy sessions. You'll participate in a pre assessment, skills training in groups, individual therapy, and telephone crisis coaching. The goal is to improve your skills for coping with daily emotions and life challenges.

Group therapy helps you discuss, develop and improve your personal recovery as well as helps you learn from others who are engaging in recovery. Their therapeutic group helps you improve your life skills and acquire a support system for those times when your recovery is challenged.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Several techniques are key to motivational interviewing in Kentucky. Your therapist will use open ended questions, affirm your strengths, reflect your responses back to you, and summarize your responses. This allows you to identify any discrepancies in your current situation and your future goals, which can motivate you to make changes.

Trauma therapy provides you with a safe space to work through a trauma that you witnessed or experienced. Trauma informed therapy supports you to understand your emotional and physical responses and develop healthier coping mechanisms when exposed to triggers in the community. This improves your sense of self confidence and empowerment.

As you begin couples therapy in Kentucky, you'll outline the goals for therapy. Your therapist will then arrange to meet with you in weekly joint sessions and, in some cases, individual sessions. You'll receive homework assignments to practice each week between sessions that will help you reach your goals.

NorthKey Community Care provides services to help you improve the mental health of your children and family. Their professional staff understands behavioral health issues and how to help your children, and you, improve communication and reduce family tensions.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Holistic alcohol and drug addiction treatment centers use recreational therapy to help you find a constructive way to spend your time and manage your stress. Activities can include yoga, team sports, creative arts, and painting. These encourage social interaction, support your physical fitness, and improve your mood, all of which are crucial for maintaining a successful recovery.

They are terrible to their patients, people feel awful in here. They are constantly humiliated by the staff that feels "superior" just because they don't have the same problems like us

This place is a joke. They don't help. And as soon as you ask to see a different psychiatrist they exit you from the program without telling you they even exited you! Their phychiatrists quit left and right so they are constantly reassigning new people to your case.in no way shape or form do I take narcotics or have ever been addicted to any drugs. Always passed my drug tests. They refused to send in mynon narcotic medicines so that I could find a different place to see a psychiatrist after they exited me. Would not recommend this place to anyone. The only person in the staff that is helpful is Stella.

They never answer the front desk phone, it s like they get paid to do nothing at the front desk and watch the phone ring when I try to get my medication refilled. Ridiculous. And then when they do answer the phone, I hear you guys munching and crunching on food on the other line. You guys need to do better, some people need to get their medication on time.

Where do I even BEGIN?! This place IS NOT helpful. Before I explain all the awful things that have happened to me... I take 100% responsibility for my actions. The way I have spoken/behaved. I will say that I am not 100% at fault. Also I am responsible for some of the appointments i have missed. This is within the last two-three years..With that being said- this place is a absolute joke. They DO NOT care unless you're a drug addict. Theres more programs, therapy etc. For those struggling with drug addiction vs those that are struggling mentally. I have been waiting for an appointment since November of 2022. A week after my friend took her life. (This is where I am holding myself accountable). I have missed a couple of appointments due to work or other outside factors. Altogether maybe like 4 appointments. Aside from that It's been an absolute nightmare trying to get an appointment. I keep getting placed on hold for extended periods of time. I get told that there's absolutely nothing available til the end of October. Then you have people at the call center (Lori- unsure if that's how you spell her first name)- who like to argue, be disrespectful and just down right mean. Even at times when I have not argued back, I would simply say "I don't want to speak to you, I want to speak to someone else". Im told no, that isn't possible. That there's "no one else". Then she will just argue every time you just ask her to respect your boundary and not wanting to speak with. Automatically transfer to a supervisor. Then the therapist I DID have- Renee Wright.. I cancelled an appointment bc of conflicting work schedule.. I got a reminder text Sunday (a day before my appointment) that my appointment was on going. I call monday morning and ask for it to be cancelled. It was "cancelled" according to Jade at the call center. 2PM i get a call from my therapist (bc it was a phone session). I told her that I was not in the mood to talk and straight up told her that I was headed to work. Then she said what else is going on. I told her I have had a migraine for seven days and I was NOT in the mood to deal with her. Also explained that I had cancelled the appointment on friday and monday morning. So she wasn't suppose to talk to me. She then berated me for having a migraine and not going to the doctor. Not her concern.Shelby- Crisis therapist- violated a HUGE privacy act... I had called on a saturday around 1:30 in the afternoon. I was transferred to her. I recognized the sound of the call connecting to the blue tooth to her car. I then heard her say to someone (be quiet i'm on the phone). I did complain. Did anything come it? No.Emma Brooks- I was going thru a really bad episode and called crisis and was connected with an individual. They had me on speaker. Emma brooks was in the background and heard her say "Oh my god why is she acting like that". BRO WHAT? Made a complaint on her as well. Did anything ever come of it? Of course not.The countless times the phone has "issues" when Im straight up hung up on. Then apparently a supervisor is contacted after I'm hung up on. How do I know this? Because when I am talked to- a supervisor is made "aware" of phone issues. When there isn't phone issues..Finally- I have a screen shot of north key making a call to the hospital saying that I needed to be admitted to eastern state because of how upset I was and threating (not true) to end my life. They then said that I had "failed" out patient therapy. How can one fail out patient therapy if I wasn't really provided services in the first place?!This is posted on 10/08/2023 at 6:40 PM on Sunday.I will keep reposting this if this is deleted.

Used to be a good place to get mental and physical help. Now the ladies in the front office are cold and uncaring. You will start with one person and two or three months down the line they will switch you to someone else, making you start the whole thing over again. Not good for anyone with any kind of anxiety. Don't bother.
