About Merakey

Merakey is an outpatient behavioral health and mental health center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This location used to be called Northwestern Human Services, but now they’re part of the Merakey health system. This organization has dozens of facilities throughout Pennsylvania, Ohio and several other states.

This facility specializes in both addiction and mental health treatment for adults. They can help with co-occurring disorders as well and coordinate your mental health and addiction treatment. They mostly provide individual therapy and group therapy, but they also have family therapy. Their peer support groups are a big part of addiction treatment, too, so you can work through the challenges of recovery and sobriety with others who have been in your shoes.

While their addiction treatment here is for adults, they do have child and family services at this location. They help families with issues like autism and mental health needs at any age, so they can help you with these complications, too.

I should also note that while the addiction treatment here is provided on an outpatient basis, they do have some residential treatment facilities. Those facilities are for adults with severe mental illnesses, and some are short term for crisis stabilization, while others are more long term.

A person’s experience with treatment often depends on how well they connect with their specific therapist. Clients at this center say that it took them a few tries to get paired with a therapist who worked well for them. So keep in mind that you can switch to a different counselor if you don’t get paired with a good fit right away. This can be a trial and error process but worth the treatment and support you’ll get in the long run.

Accepted Insurance

Merakey works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient programs are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs. The Intensive Outpatient Program gives patients the chance to participate in a structured treatment plan part-time while they transition back to home and work or other responsibilities. This program provides half-day treatment (Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 9:15 am to 12:30 pm).
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Clients receiving services from a rehab aftercare program are usually stable and in the maintenance phase of recovery, having completed detox and/or intensive inpatient treatment. Rehab aftercare services can vary widely based on clients' individual and evolving needs, but often include peer coaching, relapse prevention support, 12 step program induction, and medical, mental health, and social service referrals. Individual care plans are typically developed by the client in partnership with their case manager and care team.
12-step icon12-Step
12 step programs prioritize the recovery journey as a life-long process based on personal spiritual growth and ongoing peer support. Regular attendance at 12 step meetings, which are held multiple times each day in most communities, is expected. Participants also receive one-on-one mentoring by a self-selected peer sponsor. The 12 steps are designed to encourage participants' self-compassion, awareness, acceptance, and accountability. Dedicated programs for specialized groups, including seniors, teens, and families, are common.
sober-living iconSober Living Homes
Residents of a sober living home in Pennsylvania pay rent and contribute to household maintenance. For their contributions, individuals get the opportunity to live in a substance-free environment and receive support from others in recovery while all residents practice sober-living skills. Sober living expenses are not covered by insurance since they are not treatment services. However, grants and scholarships are often available to help individuals afford rent for men's or women's sober living.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
With a partial hospitalization program (PHP), you can participate in intensive rehabilitation treatment with the ability to return home at the end of the day. For a weekly minimum of 20 hours, a partial hospitalization program can take place up to 5 days a week for an average of 90 days. During PHP treatment, you can receive relapse prevention strategies, medication management, individual and group therapy, and other behavioral therapy interventions.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one’s body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal. Linden Oak's Addiction Services unit is a separate area within Linden Oaks Hospital that offers treatment for those undergoing withdrawal as they stop the cycle of addiction. Patients are detoxified under the care of a psychiatrist, and their staff has specialized training to provide the medication, monitoring and support needed during the withdrawal process.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Dialectical behavior therapy in Pennsylvania is an evidence based technique that involves group therapy, individual therapy, and phone coaching. Group sessions focus on learning behavioral skills. Phone coaching allows you to call your therapist during the week for help with challenging situations.

Group therapy sessions in Pennsylvania offer you a safe space when you're struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. You can openly discuss your challenges and the progress you're making in rehabilitation. The goal of nutrition therapy is to help you understand how your diet affects your overall health. It teaches you healthy eating habits, which speed up your recovery and give you the nutrients you need for long term physical and mental health.

Emotions that surface during experiential therapy can reveal how you've coped with situations in the past. A trained therapist will guide you through conversations about your emotions and reactions either during therapy or in a follow up session. Therapy may include activities such as equine therapy, wilderness therapy, martial arts, drama, music, or art.

Two nicotine replacement therapy medicines have been approved by the FDA. Bupropion decreases cravings and withdrawal symptoms. Varenicline reduces the urge to smoke and the enjoyment you get from cigarettes. Nonprescription therapies include gum, patches, and lozenges.

They are horrible as they messed up my hubby with their services as they caused my hubby many problems contributing to my hubby's decline & mental health, prescribing medications with side effects contributing in the decline of his mental health. That is a very dangerous place to go for mental health.

I suffer from severe panic attacks and anxiety disorder was diagnosed from the hospital everytime I have to go there, they suggested me to ask my dr for benzodiazepines and I was denied even though I ve taken them before. The dr doesn t care about his patients or try and bother helping them he just feeds me different medications that did nothing. Don t waste your time with dr Boswell or whatever his name is.

I just seen somebody said Dr.Boswell is terrible and I agree. He is awful, I had to switch between him and Dr. John who hardly speaks English making him difficult to understand. No offense but they should hire people who better understand English. It s so hard to get appointments here and they are always booked out so far in advance.Boswell is so condescending and talks down to you he hardly helps, he almost falsely diagnosed me as well legit checked in with two other doctors who proved his diagnosis was wrong. He doesn t listen just tries to prescribe random medications so he makes more. Big Pharma is trying to make profits off of you. We should all complain to the grievance department get him fired! He should not be a licensed Doctor he s about as much of a Dr. As Dr.OzAfter Jennifer left you guys you went down hill she was the best therapist you guys had to offer.

Dr. Boswell is terrible. Don't go here. You'll suffer and never get proper treatment. They don't return calls or emails either. Don't go to Linda either.

Terrible. They add to the stigma of mentally Ill people being bad and that getting help is bad. As soon as you walk in you have to report to the security guard your name first. Security is very rude and doesn t even give you a chance to breath in the waiting room air before demanding your name! They do not even smile or say good morning. Then after security gets your full name you check in with the receptionist. Makes no sense to me. Please make some attempt to fix this.

This place was a benzodiazepine pill mill giving free reign to Dr. Andrew Lopez to dole out benzos to mostly women in the Philadelphia area. I'm male and have gone there for treatment for over 28 years, and they never tried to prescribe me benzos. I can only guess it's because women are more naive and will ask less questions. Now they've changed their name from Northwestern Human Services to Merakey, gotten rid of Dr. Lopez, and they want to change their image from creating and feeding addicts. The problem is I'm now watching my 73 year old mother go through severe clonazepam withdrawl. It would have been nice if they did this years ago before my mother developed dementia and could have had a somewhat happier and more productive life in her final years. This place has no balance. It's from one extreme to the other. And to top it off, it's all being done over the phone due to covid. They couldn't have picked a worse time. Very cowardly to cut people off over the phone and not have to deal with them in person. I can't think of a company more deserving of a class action lawsuit.

This place is an absolute joke if you want to get the Vivitrol shot. Dr. Mattingly can't keep track of his patients. I am now overdue for my THIRD SHOT, and still haven't received my second. The doctor's words to me were "sorry I guess it's just not going to work out." And then blames everything on COVID. I even offered to travel to his office in West Philly. This is serious and it's people's lives you are messing with sir. Have a little pride and integrity in your work as a healthcare professional for God's sake.
