About Mental Health Center
Mental Health Center provides mental health and drug treatment for children, teens, and adults in Billings, Montana. Their goal is to help you overcome any challenge that’s keeping you from enjoying a happy, productive life. They offer free crisis assistance, as well as residential, outpatient, and community services.
If you’re struggling with a drug or alcohol addiction, they’ll assess your condition and talk to you about your recovery goals. Based on that conversation, they may recommend a few different treatment programs. If you need immediate help, you can take advantage of their crisis services. These can include counseling, education, and referrals to nearby providers.
Otherwise, they may recommend outpatient counseling to help you address your condition. They’ll also work through your triggers, and you can learn healthy coping skills. They offer these sessions for individuals, groups, and families. That way you can learn from others while also have time to reflect on your own progress. How often you visit will depend on your treatment plan.
One client says she’s been going here for 10 years and appreciates that the therapists actually let you talk and listen. However, several former clients have been dissatisfied with the care they received and have felt unsupported in their recovery journey.

Levels of Care
Outpatient
Good therapy stems from a desire to improve life's circumstances within a safe and confidential environment. Outpatient Services provides counseling, psychotherapy and evaluation for individuals in need of mental health care. The Mental Health Center office consists of eleven therapists offering services in Billings at 1245 North 29th Street as well as in other communities throughout the region.
Intensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
Inpatient
Residential Services is a part of the Community Support Services Division of the Mental Health Center. These services include several types of residential settings that range from structured and supervised to fully independent living. It is the hope of the Residential Services Programs that each individual who participates in services will be prepared for independent living to the best of their ability; that they will gain stability through education and treatment; and that they will feel positive and empowered about their future. Cooperative living is another type of supportive service made available to individuals by the Mental Health Center. The Mental Health Center offers this alternative housing option to people who are actively involved in their treatment and who will benefit from living with others. Residence in an MHC cooperative living setting is based on each individual's level of responsibility, social function, availability and ability to pay.
Aftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).
Sober Living Homes
Residential Services also offers fully independent living apartment settings to Mental Health Center clients who have stabilized and are self-sufficient. The three apartments available are two bedroom units with kitchen appliances including dishwashers and have a common laundry area. A rental deposit is required at the time of lease-up as is the first months rent. Section 8 rental assistance is accepted if the rental amount falls within the Section 8 guidelines.
12-Step
Addiction recovery based on 12 step program models emphasize emotional, psychological, and spiritual growth. The 12 step recovery strategy depends on intensive peer support, including regular attendance at group meetings, which are anonymous, free, open to the public, and available 365 days per year in most communities. Participants also receive one-on-one mentoring from a self-selected peer sponsor as they work through the 12 steps of recovery, which relate to self-awareness, forgiveness, accountability, and acceptance.

Treatment
Dual Diagnosis
Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.
Mental Health
Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.
Clinical Services
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.
Experiential Therapy
Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.
Family Therapy
Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.
Group Therapy
Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.
Individual Therapy
In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.
Life Skills
Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.
Trauma Therapy
Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.
