About Jewish Family Service

Jewish Family & Children's Services (JFCS) is a substance abuse and mental health treatment program in Phoenix, Arizona, south of Grand Canal Trail. They seek to strengthen the communities they serve with a combination of primary health, behavioral health, and social services. They serve clients of all ages.

JFCS provides services to clients of all faiths and backgrounds. Specialized programs include Jewish community services, domestic violence groups, and integrated healthcare. Services are provided on an outpatient basis.

Outpatient programs provide a low-intensity level of care best suited for clients who experience mild symptoms and are otherwise stable. Clients in these programs do not live at the facility and thus aren’t under constant staff supervision. Clients visit the facility for regular treatment while continuing to live independently at home.

JFCS gives clients a personalized treatment plan focusing on their challenges and lived experiences. Typically, these programs are built around a form of counseling, which may occur in individual and group settings. During sessions, clients learn and practice coping skills that will help them maintain sobriety.

Because outpatient treatment is a low-intensity level of care, clients with severe symptoms may be recommended to a different program for a higher level of care.

When considering a treatment program, clients should first confirm coverage with their insurance provider, as in network and out of network benefits vary.

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

couples-therapy iconCouples Therapy

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

medical-detox iconExperiential Therapy

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nutrition Therapy

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

My daughter has been here, and I can tell they do help her through the recovery process. Now she can express her feelings without fear of being judged. Great place and helpful staff!

There's a reason this place is only at 3 stars and honestly it should be lower. They are stalling the process of me getting the help I need by ignoring prior diagnosis' from previous doctors and saying "we can't diagnose you with that because it's a pretty serious diagnosis." Like why do you think I'm seeking services to take care of this serious diagnosis? They're continuously rescheduling me, and they even scheduled me with a person who was leaving the company, because that makes total sense, and ended up rescheduling me again because she left! The front desk guy today was zero help. I came within the 15 minute grace period and Cheryl decided she couldn't see me, why have a grace period if there's no grace!? I've been here for a couple months and I've only been seen once. Just awful services so far.

Samantha Ferrera Case manager, Nancy Simms Nurse NP. Nancy likes to take 12yr old children rapidly off of SSRIs and Smack them with 300mgs of Triliptol and brush your concerns as a mother under the rug. My child had withdraw symptoms and was incompacitated. See Katie Hoke, SHES AMAZING. She will take the time and make sure your child's dose is on point. I trust her immensely. Samantha Ferrera, she can't seem to prioritize her work, therefore letting high needs cases go weeks between CFTs before doing anything necessaryto move forward care...unless you hold her accountable. Even then she needs a push to get moving. My concerns were not taken seriously, I had to call DCS for help with my child. I work in recovery, I have a good idea of how the system works, including what Levels of care (LOC) people need. Recently, Samantha decided to exclude me from a very important email thread pertaining to my childs care. My concerns were addressed at 5pm...I have left a message with the co-director Jackie (she's amazing btw) and I look forward to hearing back from her soon. I'll update if this is resolved. Even if resolved, I will never refer anyone to this facility, I in fact will go out of my way to protect the public from them by sharing my experiences.

It is a disgusting place that first speaks to you and they tell you an appointment 1:30 and then they change it by means that you have to organize yourself to get an exclusive time for your children. I arrived at 1.14 and they are busy waiting on the line and she says I have to cancel why you were late when she warns me it s 1:27 it s stupid what kind of keys they have are limit 15 min wherever. Mediocre staff

They have gone above and beyond to help. All the staff are great Update: All of the team treating me left and it was not a positive experience after they were gone. I wouldn't recommend them.

It's almost impossible to get a hold of any staff over the phone. When dealing with a delay in treatment, responsiveness can mean the world and this clinic has shown to turn what should be expedient service into a living nightmare. These standards of care are unacceptable.

Updated 11/23This place is still no good for medical care. They have yet another new provider who is the only person seeing patients. Frustrated with the entire staff. You call and if you select any buttons, you get VM. You have to let it run through the entire prompt in English and Spanish TWICE before a human answers the phone. They will say they are transferring you to medical or behavioral and it s a 50/50 chance you get to the right one.Forget about getting an emergency need appointment such as child throwing up with fever, or hospital discharge from an accident with head wound, concussion, and broken ribs requiring meds or referral services to see a specialist. They told me 12 days out is when they can schedule me. I tried talking to a supervisor to see if they can see me sooner. 5 days is still their standard for emergency appts. They need more providers to accommodate same day or at least next day appts. Forget it! 5 yrs I wasted on medical side-AVOID THIS PLACE!Update fall 2021This place is no good for medical care. Now that Adriana is gone, the whole medical side is staffed with arrogant, lazy, people. They don t answer the patient s phones, if you get transferred in from the behavioral health side they usually will tell you leave a message, and if you have more than one issue or medication, they will make you have a bunch of appointments spread out over time. They only see medical patients from 7:30A-3:00P 3 days a week and the only provider, a PA named Tammy Oligarchy, complained that she doesn t get to take a long lunch the first time I ve met her. She has the assistant ladies stall for time by asking what medication refills you need, so she can come in and ask you the same questions without reading the notes and as soon as you mention something for a different issue, will tell you you need another appointment on a different day.She stated outright a few times now that they no longer do any same day appointments, so her advice is DON T GET SICK OR GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. She acts like she doesn t want to see patients, so why work there as the only provider who can see patients?after I waited 5 days for an emergency appointment only for Tammy to REFUSE TO WRITE A WORK EXCUSE NOTE. I had to drive back 2 more times and wait on standby over an hour just to get a note that said I was seen for an appointment. For my sick appointment I was on time at the check in window but the man up front answered a call from in the building and then transferred the call incorrectly and then laughed with his neighbor saying, it s ok. They ll call back. Probably. He then took another call before checking me in so it was 3 minutes after my appointment time, and Tammy kept telling me how grateful I should be to her because she was seeing me.The office medical assistants are called behavioral health techs here, BTW, and they sign the notes instead of the provider, so make sure if you need a work excuse, you tell the provider you need it from her or a nurse. I went in for being coughing bronchitis sick and it looked questionable since behavioral health has nothing to do with a potential Covid infection which I was being seen. The were 2 helpful persons, one was the RN lady who looks like Elsa, and there was a BHT/MA who was pleasant. But when they were talking to me after Tammy had retreated to her office after dismissing me, she kept listening like she was paranoid, and she emerged only to tell me that they don t have to make another appointment and I should just leave and call in so the front desk can schedule it. I told her they don t answer calls and I want to make sure I have it scheduled before I leave. She asked well how did you get this appointment then and I told her, I drove in the previous week and talked to the Elsa look-alike.Tammy needs to chill out and go work in a office with other providers so they can help shoulder the burden of seeing patients. She should see patients as people, not just to get as many appointments paid for as possible.

This place is ridiculous. They don't care about their patients needs. I had scheduled an appointment for my son well we were 15 min late but they told me I coukd be when I called I got there and they said I needed to reschedule. So I did and mistakenly I came in at noon and the appointment was at 11. It was an accident however they told me im not allowed to come back because of that. It wasn't about me or the Dr it was for my 10 year old child and if they cared for their patients they would have rescheduled. Very UNPROFESSIONAL.

If I could give 0 starts I would.Let me write the most honest and heartfelt review.First off, my daughter has been at JFCS since the age of 5. She has had so many different diagnoses including Bipolar with acute psychosis at the age of 7! Come to find out, since then she has been diagnosed with AUTISM. Over the course of treatment they claim you re an unfit parent unless you turn your WHOLE LIFE UPSIDE DOWN just to make it to an appointment. Her nurse practitioner made claims of calling CPS on me because my daughter was refusing to take her medication and made several comments saying that I should have my daughter taken away because I wouldn t force medication down her throat. Her past therapist when I mentioned that she was hurting the animals in our home (to help find a therapeutic solution) she stated that we need to get rid of all of our pets and they aren t our child .The case managers are a joke. My daughter was just assigned a new case manager and when sending a referral for services SHE MADE ME PRINT OUT ALL THE FORMS AND FILL THEM OUT! Then they claim you have to meet with them once a week in person or virtually. They can t keep kids on their medication and when you complain about treatment they retaliate then they call CPS on you.As someone who already works in the behavioral health/special education field for over 7 years, if you value your child and your own mental health, stay away from this place.
