About Haverhill Pavilion Behavioral Health Hospital

Haverhill Pavilion Behavioral Health Hospital is a psychiatric facility that offers inpatient (IP) drug and alcohol rehab services. They are located in Haverhill, Massachusetts. They treat adults with substance and alcohol use disorder. They also treat people who have been diagnosed with substance use disorder and alcohol use disorder at the same time.

You will be given a physical and psychiatric assessment when you enter the facility. The information obtained from this assessment will let the staff know what kind of therapy to treat you with. You’ll participate in group therapy sessions every day several times a day while you are there. Individual and family therapy will be given on a needed basis.

If you have a mental health condition that requires medication, the staff can prescribe it to you. The staff can also provide you with basic medical care.

This facility offers one program for adults from the ages of 19 to 49 and another for people who are older than that. This is a rarity in rehab facilities. People often feel more comfortable sharing in groups with people in their own age group who have experienced some of the same things they have.

They offer a variety of different treatment methods. Therapists most often use behavioral cognitive therapy (CBT) and sensory modulation to treat substance use disorder. This teaches you to think differently in order to behave differently. They also provide recreational therapy which uses team sports and group challenges to build confidence and cooperation skills.

Well, Human Services is in severe crisis. With that said, places like these are not properly funded. They are in fact dreary dumps, dirty and falling apart inside and out. They serve subpar food that will inflame your bowels while a patient here. Those working at this facility are not paid well, they have problems of their own and they try to take care of human animals that are ill in various ways.If we want places like these to run properly, money is needed to pay the employees a decent wage, money is needed to get decent psychiatrists in to diagnose and spend time doing so with the patients here. Currently, the doctor here meets with you for a few minutes, then another doctor meets with you for a few minutes then wham you have new meds and you are on your way back home or you are retained in this dump that feeds you processed, cheap food that messes with your guts while a patient there. I m still trying to have normal bowel movements after being released from this facility over a month ago.In the USA, funding is NOT properly allocated to taking care of the human beings in this country. We no longer have people in this country that want to do the kind of work it takes to care for the mentally, emotionally, drug addicted human animals we have running around this country.. Many of those doing this work are OVERWORKED and exhausted, some are just in it briefly for a paycheck and couldn t care less but most in this line of work are truly just trending water .they see a lot, they are abused on a daily basis verbally, physically and mentally . they are under payed and we expect them to show up with a smile. LOL. You are all expecting way too much from your fellow human animals that do this work. This country has lost it s way greed has taken over and true humanitarians are far and few between.I give it 3 stars only for the workers here that show up with a slight smile it must be very difficult to muster.

Dr. Lipin told me I was a liar when I told him about intense side effects from medications. I was kept for 6 weeks and wasn't really given a good explanation as of why. I did 3 3-day forms, and none of them were honored. I would recommend this place to be shut down.

Location

Accepted Insurance

Haverhill Pavilion Behavioral Health Hospital works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Rehab aftercare programs offer customized, wraparound support for clients in the maintenance phase of recovery. Many clients enroll in drug rehab immediately after completing intensive inpatient or residential care. Services encompass outpatient treatment but often extend long beyond the completion of a formal recovery program and typically include a variety of medical, mental health, and social service programs. Peer coaching, relapse prevention, 12 step program induction, and related services are commonly available.
12-step icon12-Step
Recovery models based on 12 step programs feature extensive peer coaching and emphasize personal growth as a key to sustained sobriety. Regular attendance at 12 step meetings, which are anonymous, free, and available daily, is expected. The 12 steps of recovery are based on spiritual principles and support participants in addressing the root causes of their disease, accept responsibility for their choices, and accept that which is beyond their control. Self-selected sponsors provide one-one-mentoring.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Trauma therapy addresses the psychological impact of experiencing a traumatic event. You can also experience mental and emotional injury after witnessing a trauma. By identifying what triggers those responses and developing effective coping mechanisms, you can rebuild a sense of safety and trust in your environment.

In my experience as a patient, the nurses and staff are under resourced for the pure generalness of the patients admitted. Some patients are extremely stable and others have delusions that staff are not equipped to deal with at the facility. Because of this, I found there was really no treatment or even stabilization, just watching and meds. Outside time was walking around a square patio in circles, which itself was not helpful at all and even the higher coherency group I was invited to was not anything to do with therapeutic treatment. I wish there were counseling resources and more personalized experiences as I was lumped in with so many different levels of stability that ultimately made me feel dehumanized. Haverhill did not help at all.

A mothers NIGHTMARE! That s what it feels like when you have a loved one dealing w/ mental illness compounded by legal use of THC. My adult child 23 ended up in this facility 2x. As a Social worker myself at first I was frantic, reading the reviews and 1st visit seeing that it was CO-ED. I was even skeptical about the medication protocol used for stabilizing. If you have a loved one here know that they are SAFE!!! The prescribing physician meets with and listens to the patient. The social worker listens , helps make realistic goals but not always what the patient wants to hear. My adult child made complaints , cursed out staff and family. It was so scary because I know first hand from working in a skilled nursing facility that staff are human and abuse by staff does and can happen. LISTEN carefully to any complaint a patient here gives. Most likely they are there against their will at first because they were a risk to themselves or others. It s NOT home and the staff are there every day with people that are at their worst! My sweet child was a terror and although some of her complaints were valid concerns they were exaggerated, twisted and misunderstood. Believe me some staff can have an attitude, some staff follow protocol while others may use discretionary judgement. If you have a concern talk to a supervisor ! Ask questions! Learn about the diagnosis and most like you will come to realize the lack of COPING SKILLS is what drives the majority of negative reviews. We are fortunate enough that we could afford a more luxurious facility and have access to many other options but due to a wait list and positive feed back about this facility from highly respectable professional in the field we chose to leave our adult child here until ready. The 3 day notice in place to prevent anyone from being institutionalized unnecessarily was constantly being used by my child every time they didn t get their way. I will say that my child was able to advocate for themselves in refusing one of the medications and knowing that in doing so they got themselves sanctioned due to threats (idle )of harming themselves or others. However after several days I finally had my child back. Without facility like this and staff that choose to work with patients suffering mental illness where would they go? Just know your loved one is safe!!! The non luxury amenities and institutional rules are made to keep everyone safe. It s not a retreat or vacationI am Grateful and thankful to this facility in helping get my child back! Special thank you to Wendy (the supervisor) All of the front desk receptionists that are so nice. Asunta the SW and Dr. Jessica Sweet and the BHT s that had to deal with my child God Bless

If I could give zero stars I would, Had Dr lipin assigned to me during my stay and he used his ego to make decisions about my placement instead of listening to me and the other medical professionals on staff, I missed work and was consequently late on my rent further putting me in more distress because Dr. lipin disregarded my release and decided to keep me longer until he saw fit, very very disturbing experience. Horrible sanitation, would never send someone I love to this facility

UPDATE: I have called DPH & Haverhill Board of Health-when I was there all the staff had to wear masks and I questioned if there was a COVID outbreak- there is nothing to worry about I developed a runny nose and chalked it up to my allergies and rapid weather changesTwo weeks after I left I tested positive for COVIDThis is the complaint I filed with my local DMH officeI recently had to receive short term services at the Haverhill Pavillion after being at Charlton ER in Fall River (was transferred to Charlton from a local crisis center)Immediately I experienced human rights issues and filed a complaint ASAP with their officer which got nowhereDue to my mild, late diagnosed ASD I need my mother on the phone to help facilitate the intake processI requested this with the intake nurse and she said "yes, we are just waiting for the doctor" then the doctor came in headstrong...I asked again and the doctor, Alexander Lipin boldly said no, and started blazing thru the intake process asking me questions and refusing to let me finishing answering. I kept mentioning my ASD and he is violating the ADA laws, clearly he and the nurse just did not careI became dysregulated and again mentioned this is why I need my mother on the phone, and then he asked about my meds, which I have taken for 7 to 10 years. Because I was so dysregulated and apparently was "not following his directives" he yelled " WE ARE FINISHED!!! THATS IT NO MEDS!!!"I let the both of them know they have violated my human rights and they cannot abruptly stop my meds and they violated my ADA rightsI immediately filed a human rights form (the DMH forms they have)The next day their officer came and said "you don't look like you have an ASD and we normally don't have parents present during intake"I gave this guy a piece of my mind and let him know I am on the milder end of the spectrum and was late diagnosed. I was so upset by his answer I told him I no longer wanted to speak to himDr Lipin indeed stopped all my long time meds ASAP which put me in withdrawal and psychosis (anger and rage)His tactics are to wash people off of meds so they have an episode to keep them there longer to bill insurances for more moneyI have an extensive med allergy list- I was overmedicated as a teen and was washed off of all meds at a notorious institution in Canton, MAWhenever I was reintroduced to any med I was on- I experience either an adverse or allergic reaction requiring IM benadrylDr Lipin and his team reconciled my list from Walgreens and as a PRN prescribed Zyprexa which is on my allergy listThe nurses said "we don't know what he is thinking- it is here on your allergy list"He then put me on Cogentin to counteract any med I am allergic to he chose to give meDuring another psychotic episode I was given Haldol-ANOTHER DRUG ON MY ALLERGY LIST AGAINST MY WILL with benadryl to counteract the effects I experienced 3 days of tongue spasms and then he added depakote to the mix-both I haven't taken in years and was reluctant to takeBeing afraid of "non compliance" I took it and the spasms continued begging for IM benadryl but they gave me oral benadryl ever 4-6 hoursThe next day I stopped both and the spasms stoppedDr Lipin asked when I wanted to be discharged and he actually stuck with my plan-I am used to being forced into compliance by fear "If you are good you can go home" (well put me back on my meds so I don't become psychotic!!!) I have to stuff my anxiety and fear so I could get the hell out of Haverhill!I was there 11/28 to 12/1 and immediately went back on my regular medications at home ASAP but my provider and I are weaning off of one that may have caused a "plateau" and periods of rapid cyclingIt took 3 days for me to level out so I can go back to my peer support job

My son was admitted there on Tuesday and I am really scared. After reading the reviews I didn't want him to go there. So far however so good. Nicole the receptionist was a caring light on day one. Maria, Jan, Lauren also showed compassion on days I visited (or tried to.) Andrew the security guard was also very kind in showing me the ropes. Jenny the nurse answered my questions and walked us through the release of information process. Lastly Melissa the social worker would get this place 5 stars on her own. I felt I could trust her and not only did she LISTEN she HEARD me! She learned about my son's behaviors to fairly help him. He should be home tomorrow or Tuesday. I will come back and update the rating after. I want to make sure I document the whole experience for others. I know how scary and important this is to those of us facing these crisises. Blessings to you all.VH

The worst hospital in the world. The doctor met with my husband for 2 minutes and said to his face no body like him here. My husband so sweet he friends with everybody and he shared snack that we brought to him. How can you diagnose someone without talking to the patient? I have other friends that have the worst experience there, too. Don t go there or put your love one there. I m so mad that they treated my husband that way. And i try to call about the Bill. No response. But they put our bill into debt collection. I m not sure how it would affect our credit. If I have a choice I would rate this doctor-0.
