About UW Medicine Mental Health and Addiction Services at Harborview

When clients receive MAT, FDA-approved medications are combined with mental health counseling to support individuals by helping them work through the mental, emotional, and physical aspects of addiction and recovery. Therapy is supportive by teaching clients how to work through their emotions and learn new skills to maintain their recovery. The medications mitigate withdrawal symptoms and reduce cravings while a person detoxes from addictive substances.

The medication-assisted treatment program is provided on an outpatient basis. Clients receive dosing and counseling and return to their home environment upon completion of each session.
If it is determined that a more intensive level of care is needed, a referral may be placed to a treatment center that can offer inpatient or residential care. Clients also have access to mental health counseling and dual diagnosis treatment through therapeutic interventions and personalized counseling sessions.

Harborview Medical Center – Addictions accepts most insurance plans, including United Healthcare, Magellan, ComPsych, Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and more. It’s important to verify insurance coverage with your provider prior to starting treatment because out of network benefits may vary from plan to plan.

The UW has worked hard with me. Kyla Evans has been a wonderful therapist through most of my ups and downs since working with her. She gives me things to think about and work on each time I see her. I believe having people whom gone to school should have compassion, empathy and be respectful. Kyla has been tremendous along with everyone who worked with me from the beginning when I felt like a crazy mess. They have helped me gain the nessary tools to deal with life as it comes, they worked with me when I was unworkable due to fear and anxiety. Thank you all whom invested time, compassion and understanding. In closing I love the wrap around services they have even though I still fight them on going to the doctors when it's necessary. Your all appreciated!!

Preliminary: I am a outpatient patient of harborview outpatient mental health being seen for: #Bipolar1 #PTSD #MDD #OCD #ADHD #Anxiety #goodtimesI have been going here for outpatient services longer than I care to say. That having been said; I have had much contact with all levels of staff over the years. My overall assessment is that these are amazing human beings that work for the greater good. My current case manager is so ridiculously good at his job it never ceases to amaze me. He never denies my access to him. I am admittedly a demanding client and both he and my prescribing phychiatrist deal with it very gracefully. I never feel judged or ashamed. I literally tell them everything and they take it in stride giving me necessary feedback. They respect my boundaries and I theirs so the relationship seems to work. Sometimes on weekends I have a hard time and I will leave messages, dependably corresponding come Monday morning like clockwork. they never make me feel weird about it, on the contrary, always supportive and understanding. These dedicated, hard working people have undoubtedly saved my life and certainly my sanity on several occasions when having an episode. They do their best to help me understand my illness and thereby, my limitations and acceptance of the things I cannot change. Recovery when you have a SMI is seemingly impossible and never indefinite, but without a doubt these people are there with you, as you navigate time and space by your own definitions and try to make sense of the world around you.Honorable mentions: Gail Efroymsen LICSW, Kate Severson; Psychiatric ARNP, Christine Curry MD, Jessica Hazlett LICSW, Alberto Osugera MD of sports medicine, Sam from Pat Steele pharmacy, Ladonya psychiatric nurse, and last but certainly not least, Owen B. Riley LICSWCons: The rood security guy that is upstairs upon main entrance that suceeded the nice Filipino dude.Note to management: he could use some customer service training currently he grunts at you like an ape if you say thanks to him for any reason.

Paul Munson. He's been doing this for 30 years. He'll tell you at any chance he gets. He lets his emotions control him and becomes unprofessional and engages in cognitive distortions during meetings. His documentation notes are subjective and often incorrect. His attitude is that of someone out of touch with todays problems and general opinions. He is a classic boomer. He does not create a safe place to express and communicate. Hopefully he will retire soon, sparing others from his inflexible and condescending behavior.

Accepted Insurance

UW Medicine Mental Health and Addiction Services at Harborview works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Effective drug rehab in Washington integrates care for the whole person, offering comprehensive solutions to addiction. Treatment methods address mental, physical, and relational aspects of substance abuse.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
hearing-impaired-program thumbnail image
Hearing Impaired Program
A sensory disability, such as hearing impairment, can compound the challenges of addiction recovery. Drug rehabs that are specially designed to accommodate the needs of persons with hearing impairments will include special accessibility features and accommodations to make treatment as comfortable and effective as possible. This may include access to American Sign Language interpreters.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Just had a horrible call with a young and female- sounding person when asking for general info for their IOP program. My question was about waitlist and she gave me long, convoluted answers about a 400+ referral cue, short term services of 5-6 weeks where the client sees a therapist maybe once a week or less, etc. etc. I kept reiterating that I was seeking IOP only, asking if the offer that, what the wait is. She finally said all groups are suspended because of Covid. I said (again kindly and politely and without raising my voice) that it sounds like they don't currently offer a traditional IOP due to waitlist volume and Covid. She insisted they did and repeated the lack of groups and only occasionally seeing a therapist. I said, "It sounds like you are not currently able to offer a traditional IOP program due to volume and covid." She said that was correct and I suggested she lead with that next time because people like me are making calls for a very stressful reason and just need straightforward info. She proceeded to lecture me on: most people want the long answer, I won't find any other facilities in the area able to offer full IOP, etc. When I told her that isn't accurate as I've already identified three programs but was interested in staying within the UW network, she interrupted me to talk over me. I finally was frustrated and said that she might not be a good fit for talking with people who are struggling with mental health crisis or who are advocating on their behalf like me if she can't be patient with some polite constructive feedback. She said, "I'm ending this call now!" and hung up. ...Whoa.

I can't speak for all the Doctors on staff but mine has been great. My last Dr. was basically just another drug dealer but my doctor here actually cares about my well-being and that is a most welcome change from what I had become accustom too. I would recommend this place for anyone seeking ACTUAL help with substance abuse issues.

I have been going here for years and the receptionists are very nice and welcoming. Most of the doctors here that I've seen have been good to great. I've only had a bad experience with one of the intake counselors. Parking has almost always been available when I go there, especially early in the morning and an hour or so before closing time. I am now seeing a new case worker who is doubling as my therapist and I really like him already and have only seen him once. He has a similar way of thinking as me about mental health and sounds like he has a good plan. His overall energy is great and calming!
