About Crouse Hospital – South Crouse Avenue

Crouse Hospital runs an addiction treatment program that’s located in Syracuse, New York. They help individuals with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health disorders, too.

If you need to detox before pursuing your sober life, they offer medication assisted treatment that’ll help you with withdrawal symptoms and cravings. Their levels of care include both inpatient and outpatient programs.

These programs can be gender-specific and can take place in the daytime or evening. Aside from their therapy options, they offer relapse prevention programs and courses such as anger management.

Their programs offer individual counseling, group therapy, and more holistic services like recreational therapy, vocational exploration, and leisure and social skills education. You’ll get great experience with developing sober living skills and, if you’re a parent, they even have parenting courses.

Their individual therapy will help you focus on past traumas with a therapist one-on-one, while their group therapy will give you the chance to get some much needed peer support. Either way, you’ll find a lot to benefit from here at this clinic.

As for the hospital itself. The nurses and doctors are really nice. Never had a problem. Seem like they know what they are doing. My only complaint the security guard. We were bringing our mother to the hospital. We went in to get checked in. The one security guard was really rude and acting very intimidating toward myself , my wife and my sister in law. Would not allow all of us to go in the waiting room. The security could not even walk up to the window so we could hear what he was saying. But yet walked to the doors like they were going to come at us. This is not the first time when I have gone to crouse and seen this one security guard being rude and nasty to other patients or people going into the hospital to visit their family members. They need better security officers. No reason for the attitude.

Took my dad there due to severe cellulitis in his hand. He was seen right away in the ER and the MD decided to admit him. He then spent the next 18 hours in the ER hallway. It took 2 phone calls by me and several requests by daughter to even get updates as to when he would get a room and to even give him a little bit of privacy. My daughter also asked for a CPAP for him and I made 2 more phone calls to try to get a CPAP for him. When he did get a room he was there for a few days and got discharged. The MD who discharged him did write the prescription for the correct number of antibiotic pills. Fortunately, I was able to get him an appointment with his MD the next day and he was able to correct that situation. This was NOT high quality care, it bordered on neglect.

Brought my Mom here and all they were interested in was pushing her out the door. She is 93 so they don't want to waste their time. She was in the ER 3 days and never saw a neurologist, which is why we went to the ER in the first place... otherwise we could have gotten the same care at a prompt care.

Accepted Insurance

Crouse Hospital – South Crouse Avenue works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

When you choose drug rehab in New York, you'll participate in a variety of treatments that are designed to help you live a drug-free lifestyle. Common methods of treatment include group, individual, and family counseling, medication management, nutrition, exercise, and management of co-occurring mental health disorders.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Recreational therapy (aka therapeutic recreation) uses creative and fun activities to help with addiction recovery. Recreational therapists lead patients in entertaining and engaging activities like sports or games; art (drawing, painting, sculpture); drama, music, and dance; and/or community outings (field trips) to improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being.

I'm going to make short. I got double billed for a breathing treatment and was even told by the billing department oops sorry about that but here's the dispute line so they can fix it for you. Had to leave a message for them. Didn't get a call back for almost a week or so and then she says nope we billed you correctly. I explained to her that I only had one breathing treatment and then she explained well there must have been 2 types of medicine with the one breathing treatment to which I replied well the nurse only told me I was getting albuterol. At this point I asked for an itemized bill showing what medicine they put in. Just got said bill emailed to me (almost 2 weeks or so later) and what a shocker, no explanation of what medicine they put in. I then call back and the switchboard doesn't have the ability to put me through to the dispute line so she puts me through to the billing department which doesn't answer. So now I had to leave a message for the billing Department just so that they can call me back to get me through to the dispute line again. I'm sure I'll have to leave another message with them as well. Worst customer experience ever. Not to mention I waited 6 hours in the emergency room to only speak with a doctor for 5 min. What a joke of a hospital.

Everyone was friendly and efficient. We were from out of town so tech in the radiology/ nuclear med dept. (Amanda) gave us directions to places to eat since we had to return in 3 hours to finish the test. She also was interested in where we went and what we did in the interval!

My mother was transferred here with a GI bleed. She had been here 2 days and they still had no diagnosis and no medical care plan and had done NOTHING for her. They were putting her on a liquid diet, they only supplied her 1 meal in 2 days. The doctor was rude and only came in ONCE in 36 hours to see her. No explanation of what was going on with her. Requested to be discharged, I was blown away by the lack of care at this hospital.

Worst hospital ever.Staff fought and then walked out. Leaving a more shortage of staffing on top of being short staffed.Staff shortage to a point the nursey was "shut down".A nurse laughed at my response to a private situation, mind you this was not my first delivery! First situation! The Dr. didn't know my case, yet I was in your care! Very unsettling experience. I would never ever EVER choose this hospital. Nor recommend to anyone. There were some good people, but over all care was not what it should have been by any means. Very disappointed.
