About Avenues To Wellness

Situated in Roanoke, Virginia, Avenues To Wellness is a drug and alcohol rehab that supports adults seeking treatment for substance use disorders. They also provide valuable community resources, such as referrals, and family services.

Addiction-related services at Avenues To Wellness include mental health assessments, counseling, outpatient programs, and medication-assisted treatment (MAT).

Mental Health Assessment and Counseling
Comprehensive mental health assessments assist clinicians to evaluate a client’s mental health and create an individualized plan of care. Treatment may involve individual, group, and family counseling, and other evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral therapy, or MAT.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
Participants attend individual and group treatment sessions several days a week. The benefits of IOP include professional addiction treatment, but the ability to return home each day. That’s most suited to individuals with work, school, or at-home commitments. Participants benefit from improved coping skills, stress management support, therapy, peer support, and recovery meetings.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
MAT involves the use of medication with counseling to treat opioid and alcohol use disorders. Treatment is typically offered on an outpatient basis, in-person or via telehealth. Clients can expect to meet with a clinician for an assessment and treatment plan which may involve a medication like methadone or buprenorphine. MAT participants also attend regular group and individual counseling and recovery support groups.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Clients in an intensive outpatient rehab (IOP) benefit from robust support but often do not require the high-level supervision and round-the-clock clinical care provided in an inpatient setting. Clients engage in multiple therapeutic sessions weekly, with most programs requiring between nine and 20 treatment hours per week. Intensive outpatient rehabs provide a wide array of evidence-based services, including addiction counseling, recovery-focused life skills training, holistic therapies, and medication assisted treatment (MAT).

aftercare iconAftercare

Clients participating in a rehab aftercare program receive comprehensive and customized support as they leave high-intensity treatment, reintegrate into their community, and focus on maintaining their sobriety. These programs offer a wide variety of services to align with the client's unique and evolving needs, often including medical, mental health, and social service program referrals. Clients typically develop their drug rehab aftercare plan in conjunction with their case manager and care team.

12-step icon12-Step

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Heart icon Treatment

alcohol iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

drugs iconDrug Addiction

When you enroll in drug rehab in Virginia, a treatment plan is designed by professional staff in order to help you overcome drug addiction and modify addictive behaviors. This may include evidence-based treatments, group and individual therapy, and relapse prevention.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

opium iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Hand holding medical sign icon Clinical Services

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

couples-therapy iconCouples Therapy

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

desert iconMotivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Rational Behavior Therapy

Rational Behavior Therapy (RBT) is a form of cognitive behavioral therapy meant to be short-term and comprehensive. It was intended to help clients become more self-sufficent and move forward without the need for expensive, ongoing therapy. It includes an emotional self-help method called “rational self-counseling,” the purpose of which is to give clients all the skills needed to handle future emotional issues by themselves, or with significantly less professional help.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Great place and great people, never received any of the reminder phone calls which caused me to miss multiple appointments but everyone worked with me as best as possible. Jessica Gillespie prob the best psychiatrist I ve had, hands down. Not sure if I ll have another app cause I never got a reminder call again and it was my last app I able to miss but great people regardless. hopefully I can get it worked out and come backEdit cause I can t reply:I switched the number to call over to my moms phone because I wasn t receiving them, She received 2 calls for me and hasn t received any others. Could be just a bug in the system but there are more people than me in my family that come here and receive calls so I don t know just confusing. I appreciate all the help y all gave me regardless if I m allowed back in or not but your call system has threw me and my family all out of wack. My mom has ended up bringing my cousin instead of me for an appointment if that tells you anything lol. But once again I appreciate all of y all s help though regardless (The number isn t in either of our blocked list btw)

We're glad you've had a good experience with the staff and regret you didn't receive the courtesy reminder calls. The calls go out a week before and two days before in the 9AM hour. The calls are made from an out of area number and many people have blocked them, and unfortunately we have no control over that. We do share this information/the number when new patient appointments are made to be saved to their phone. The calls come from Greenwood, VA, 540-456-9634. The office staff will be reaching out.

The front desk staff was pleasant and friendly, but the provider I had seen for my first appointment was mildly condescending and did not seem approachable. I was also disappointed at paying the copay and being hopeful of receiving help to find that because of a miscommunication between the provider who referred me and this place that I could not currently receive any help and that my referral should ve been rejected due to a specific medication allergy I have. Not sure who is responsible for that kind of thing but I feel like I wasted my money for nothing in that regard.

Response from the owner1 year ago
The office apologizes you felt you wasted your money on our service. The first appointment includes information gathering and we do rely on referral sources to provide the most up to date and accurate information so we can determine if we can assist a patient, or make a recommendation for a higher level of care, or decline due to certain diagnosis or medical conditions. We wish you good mental health and hope you find a place to meet your specific needs.

I tried calling this place to make an appointment for the very first time. They told me I had a balance due .but I had never been there. I tried explaining this to the person I was speaking to on the phone. She would not let me get a full sentence out before dismissing me and continuously telling me that I had a balance due and they ve tried calling me multiple times. After so much back and forth (back and forth is a stretch considering she kept interrupting me and insisting I owed them money), I eventually thought I was going crazy and that I had actually been there before, so I said okay let me just pay the balance then so I can make an appointment. I proceeded to give her my card information and once she asked for my phone number she says she doesn t have me in their system .. EXACTLY. I had been trying to say that for the past 10 minutes but I hadn t been able to get a full sentence out. She offered me no apology. I have never been talked to like that in my life. I have never been here and I now will never ever step foot in this place.

Thank you for your honest review. What you described is not how we operate and am sincerely sorry you experienced this at our office. If you would like to email me personally, I can share names of other providers in the Roanoke area so you may get an appointment scheduled. Again, please accept my apology. amy.stone@avewellwalnut.com

Where to begin. I asked for them to coordinate with past providers but they said not our job to follow up. I told them that HIPA was big for me, they took a call about my well being without authorization. And finally, Sarah Rodes should move back to West Va. When I asked simple questions about the Hippocratic Oath she seemed to understand. I explained my situation, she refused to help. Somewhat contradictory. And to boot, I was hoping Roanoke could be an uptick from New River Valley Community Services. Even that scum makes this place look terrible. In short, AVOID at all costs. And quoted response do exhaust all resources to obtain records from signed consents but are at the discretion of other offices to complete the requests is a factual lie. And I brought in half the records, you all didn t finish your job.

Response from the owner2 years ago
Many patients provide extensive records at their first appointment that do not warrant obtaining additional records for our service. We do exhaust all resources to obtain records from signed consents but are at the discretion of other offices to complete the requests. Providers can determine we have sufficient information to manage care and do no harm. Regretfully we cannot share records from other offices, and this can be frustrating to patients who want access to them, we can only release the work we do. Often, we are contacted by concerned friends and family members of patients and welcome the information but never acknowledge our patients and can provide generic guidance to situations. We hope you find an office that meets your needs and expectations. We wish you well and can forward your records to your new provider upon written request.
