This place is actually atrocious. Thank god I was with a few good people that made it somewhat bearable because the staff does not care at all about your diagnosis. I was on the dual diagnosis floor for some reason and they only cared about one half of the floor. No group therapy that is listed on their website, literal jail food, we were pretty much left to watch traumatizing movies and treated poorly by staff and nurses. There is some shady stuff going on at this place and they should be investigated do not send your loved ones here or voluntarily go here whatsoever

Exceptional Care at South Coast Behavioral Health HospitalMy mother has been a resident at South Coast Behavioral Health Hospital for the past six months, and I cannot express enough gratitude for the outstanding care she has received. From the moment we were greeted by the receptionist to the compassionate staff of Unit 1A, dedicated to seniors, every interaction has been marked by kindness, professionalism, and genuine compassion. The team at Unit 1A treats the patients like family, and their dedication to ensuring the well-being of each resident is truly remarkable. The nurses, doctors, and assistants go above and beyond to provide excellent care, creating a nurturing and respectful environment for our loved ones.I am incredibly thankful for everything they have done for my mother during this time. God bless the staff for taking care of our families when we are unable to do so ourselves. Their work is nothing short of extraordinary.

Horrible time it says they have groups every other hour I was there for 8 days and was in 3 groups one was bingo just regular old bingo and one was trivia not like mental health trivia just random facts. The doctor violated HIPPA laws and only sat down with me one time when it says you meet every day and the case manager was the same deal. I went here 4 years ago and it was so much better but not it is horrible and I believe needs an independent review by the state mental health department. Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
Inpatient rehab offers robust, hands-on care in a highly structured and supportive environment. The facility provides housing, meals, and round-the-clock supervision, allowing clients to focus exclusively on their recovery. Inpatient treatment typically involves intensive addiction counseling based on CBT, DBT, RBT, motivational interviewing, or other psychotherapeutic approaches. Many inpatient treatment centers also offer life skills training and/or complementary therapies, including meditation, mindfulness, and nutrition counseling.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
Due to various health issues that substance abuse causes, 24-hour clinical care in Massachusetts is often a necessary part of treatment. Individuals may be suffering from infections, illness, or organ damage. Having 24-hour care available ensures that these physical problems are treated along with the psychological effects of addiction. Once individuals complete detox and are medically stable, this intensive level of supervision ends, and the next phase of treatment can begin.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Medically supervised detox is the process of removing addictive substances from your body and managing the withdrawal symptoms in a medically supervised environment. Typically, this is the first step in the recovery process and lasts an average of 5-7 days, though the length can vary depending on your individual needs. Once your system is cleared of alcohol and drugs, you'll likely transition to an inpatient treatment program for the next phase of your recovery.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.
hearing-impaired-program thumbnail image
Hearing Impaired Program
A sensory disability, such as hearing impairment, can compound the challenges of addiction recovery. Drug rehabs that are specially designed to accommodate the needs of persons with hearing impairments will include special accessibility features and accommodations to make treatment as comfortable and effective as possible. This may include access to American Sign Language interpreters.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
postpartum-program thumbnail image
Postpartum Program
The postpartum period is a sensitive time, especially for women in addiction recovery. Rehabs with specialized programs for new mothers will offer compassionate, personalized care to meet each client's needs as they transition from pregnancy to this season of life. Care teams may include obstetricians, pediatricians, and social workers working collaboratively to give women, children, and families a healthy future.

Clinical Services

During cognitive behavioral therapy in Massachusetts, clients work with a trained counselor to identify negative thinking patterns and change them. This change in thinking has been shown to lead to changes in behavior to treat substance use and mental health disorders effectively.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members. Individuals at the group therapy attend a minimum of five groups per day.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life. The individual therapy is individualized depending on the individual needs.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Trauma therapy addresses the psychological impact of experiencing a traumatic event. You can also experience mental and emotional injury after witnessing a trauma. By identifying what triggers those responses and developing effective coping mechanisms, you can rebuild a sense of safety and trust in your environment.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Recreational therapy (aka therapeutic recreation) uses creative and fun activities to help with addiction recovery. Recreational therapists lead patients in entertaining and engaging activities like sports or games; art (drawing, painting, sculpture); drama, music, and dance; and/or community outings (field trips) to improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Horrible there was no communication from the primary doctor. He would not return calls and would not give his patient information he repeatedly asked for. There were several requests by his patient to contact me his legal guardian and still no response. I found this very incompetent on the Dr's part. I will add his name later when I get it off the discharge sheet. I have trouble understanding how an administration could allow this type of behavior from their senior staff. I tried several times to get in touch with them also with no response. I'm working now with an attorney and filling a complaint with the Attorney General's Office. You are only allowed to visit for 1 hour once a week. You drive 90 minutes toget there arive 30 min early as it's stated and they don't bring the person visiting until as late as 40 into the visit leaving only a 20 min visit. Patients in those settings need their outside contact in order to progress. It's a terrible place and they are treated more like inmates than Patients. When you visit finally arrives it's in a cafeteria where they have to sit across the table from you much like a jail or prison setting. The pictures look nice but are very deceiving beware of this institution.I do commend those who work the front desk. They do an excellent job and are looked down upon by this particular doctor and administration. If you have a lived one who really needs help please don't subject them to this place.Just got the Dr's Name Dr Rader very very unprofessional ignores his patients and doesn't respond to those he required to by law. I can't believe a hospital would employ someone like that.

Some staff are good, most dont care, others just dont want to work. Ive been twice on section 12, thankfully I made it out, because they will petition their in house court. Be careful if you go here. If I could give it no stars, I would. Then they will respond saying my review is "disheartening" - as if my stay wasnt. A big middle finger to them.**Update 8/20/24 - see the response from this place; I did what they asked and never heard a thing back.**

Never met such rude and unprofessional staff for a healthcare facility. Working in healthcare myself, I am very aware of HIPPA & policies-however, the disregard and unwillingness to help someone is a common practice here. Today, I spoke with a nurse on unit 3-(Lisa) who was extremely cold, lacked sympathy and made it very clear I was a bother. This nurse couldn t get me off the phone fast enough and with me being the one who had to section my immediate family member, feeling her apathy and not wanting to hear what I had to say about having guardianship really is disheartening. This is my second experience with this facility, sadly when someone is on a section 12 you do not have a choice of facilities and I am very aware of that but if you can advocate to avoid this facility in any other circumstances, I HIGHLY advise you to. If they are treating loved ones like this, I can only imagine how they treat their patients with their lack of sympathy, empathy and blatant lack of caring.

The "groups" were often canceled or substituted with visits to the gym. Few were led by actual clinicians and while I was there (three separate stays) none dealt with relevant issues like anxiety or depression. They screwed up my meds which led to me being denied half of my diabetes medication (1000mg per day instead of 2000). My sister had to threaten a lawsuit before it was corrected because nobody was responding to me. This place is little more than a warehouse and med adjusting center.
