Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

couples-therapy iconCouples Therapy

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

medical-detox iconExperiential Therapy

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

nicotine iconNicotine Replacement Therapy

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Buildings and most of the personnel are really good and willing to help. But in one situation they can be very rude with people that are struggling and don't deserve this deal. Well, I just think I cannot generalize only for a few members of the staff

I was just there 2 weeks ago and I was on the adult unit. My experience was a little unsatisfactory. I went because I kept having anger issues. 2 of my medications levels were low and the doctor increased my meds but he let me go before he finished getting the meds were he wanted it to be. He called the day after I left and said he wanted to change my meds again. I feel like I should have stayed long enough so the doctor could get the meds where they need to be and to monitor it for like 2-3 days to make sure I don t have any anger spells.

I was a patient here when it was Taylor Manor. I was tied up and forced to this hospital. Stayed in Solitary Confinement. This place was abusive to children. I was here in 1989.

The staff is professional and caring, and the welcoming nature of the staff to my child, along with the expertise of her psychiatrist, enabled her to feel comfortable enough to share information that has finally opened the door to long-term recovery. I am immensely grateful to the staff there how they have cared for her, made her feel comfortable, and sought to really figure out what was going on and get her on the right path to the right treatment. People who consider the staff rude and uncaring may simply be seeing their commitment to protecting privacy and running a tight ship. What matters most to me is not whether they are super chatty with me on the phone when I call, but how they treat my child while she's there, which has been outstanding.

My daughter, Evie, has been in this facility atleast 8 times and this is by far the best inpatient adolescent unit she has been in. Ellicott City is better than Towson and better than the facility she went to across the bridge. We both love the staff at Ellicott City they are very accommodating with visits if you work at night and can t come during regular visit hours. She has a hard time sleeping at night and needs music to not get in her own head and they gave her wireless headphones to listen to which I really appreciated. They do have their patients best interests at heart. Mr. Ryan and Mr. Chris were her favorites and my favorites as well. I want her at this facility more than any other facility. Ryan and Chris actually care about the patients and their family. I highly recommend bringing your children here if they have issues that they need help dealing with.-Kimberly G

They really messed me up. I went there a couple years ago and they treated me horribly. I am just beginning to get over the traumatic experience I had there now.

No real care. They are more concerned with getting you out the door than helping a patient long term. Sent my son home with three bottles of pills and see ya later. He has overdosed in the past. I find this totally negligent. Facility itself could be the setting for some creepy horror movie.

If I could give negative stars I would....this is by far the WORST facility I have ever encountered. Mind you this is my first experience with a mental health facility, I came into the situation with expectations of getting the help I needed as a voluntary adult and came out of the situation more traumatized than before. I got to Sheppard around 12am so there was no doctor on duty. The staff made me uncomfortable in multiple ways to the point where I had a panic attack. There was no care in the world from staff that I was obviously terrified in a very new environment, an experience I never had gone through before. They actually got more aggressive the worse my panic attack got (mind you I was in no way trying to hurt myself or any staff) I begged and begged for them to transfer me anywhere else and they said it was impossible due to there not being a doctor at that time. Ok fine. Then I was told I would be able to see a doctor first thing in the morning. Then they refused to give me my medication because I told them I hadn t taken it at all that day because I take it at night when I go to sleep and I had it with me with my name on the bottle. When I was woken up at 7:30 that morning that was not the case. Every staff member I tried to ask about seeing the doctor had a different answer for me. Still wasn t given my medication. Causing more anxiety. Finally at 2pm I get to see the doctor and refuses to transfer me even though in the handbook it states any voluntary adult can asked to be transferred and that would be respected and he decides to cold turkey me off of my medication that has serious side effects when doing that and putting me on a benzo promising I would be tapered off of it before I left the hospital. I was not tapered off of the benzo before I left, leaving me in a confused state when I got home, and am now suffering withdrawal from the medications they decided to go cold turkey on. I could go on and on about why you should stay away from this facility at all costs but let me give you a list.-UNORGANIZED I have never seen a facility so unorganized not able to keep track of maybe 6 patients? Is absolutely unbelievable.-staff constantly giving empty promises such as being able to see the doctor, just to get patients to shut up.-absolutely NO help with transferring into such a new environment even as little as a towel, tooth brush, blanket, soap, all had to be asked for which could cause major anxiety or triggers. NO explanation of how groups work, how the schedule was going to look, how to order food for breakfast lunch and dinner, no rules were given, for someone who has never been to a mental health facility this can be extremely intimidating and confusing.-we were allowed to order the food we wanted/ pick from a list and I was there for 7 days I never once got what I requested something was always wrong and I have a food allergy to gluten this was a major problem....I lost 15 pounds.-my roommate requested constantly that a male staff not come in our room at any time (doesn t seem like an odd or difficult request since we our two young women) they never respected this request which would trigger me and my roommate on multiple occasions a male staff opened the bathroom door while going to the bathroom and into our room while trying to sleep.-DIRTY the floors were awful, the bathrooms were awful honestly just personal hygiene was at a risk the entire time.-they insisted I was taking this gi pill (still haven t been given the name of that medication) at home before I came to the hospital. I insisted I have never been diagnosed with any gi problems and never have taken any gi pill. They disregarded that completely and gave me a random gi pill every night.-they were so unorganized to the point they would tell a patient they were going home that day and 15 minutes later they would tell them oops wrong person you re not going home today.-the majority of the staff just made every patient feel as if they didn t care at all about them.PART 1

I cant thank everyone enough for helping my family. They helped me with my son who is better than before. This was our first time ever facing a mental illness and he was in deep. Every night they reassured me that he would get better and it takes time. It was so hard seeing my 18 year old going through something as a mom that i couldn't fix i had no answer to. He has been in there for 2 weeks now. Thank you for bringing my son back to me. Thank you for all your caring and compassion. Thank you for everything you all did and continue to do everday.

Where do i start.... Dr. Ikwunga Wonodi is by far the worst medical practitioner I have ever the displeasure of meeting.Insofar his entire ability is confined to over prescribing medications.I had the misfortune of being in a situation that I had no choice than having to deal with this poor example of a doctor . I was admitted to the Shepherd Pratt Facility on a Wednesday night. I met with him first thing Thursday morning, we went over my medications and I expressed to him that I had an appointment that Monday morning for a pain management injection. I expressed that pain is a key trigger to my major stress diagnosis. He brushed it off as an insignificant part of my treatment. The beds were hard the chairs uncomfortable. I expressed to the staff and doctor that my pain was worsening. For some strange reason they though it was prudent to schedule my pain medication 12 hours apart! I requested that my medication be changed to 6 hours apart. They ended up making it 8hrs apart. Avoid this doctor at all costs, it s very apparent that he only cares about writing scripts for unnecessary medications!Simple human considerations are not even secondary barely tertiary! The list below is merely what I experienced in my 6 day visit:1. They have a one scrub per visit policy. Why would I even have to spell out the issues with this? Their response is that the patients need to reach out to someone to bring them clothes! If you end up in this poor excuse for a mental illness facility you most likely are lacking a good support structure.2. Technically part of one but also a significant issue. Most, actually all people won t take a bath if you are going to put disposable scrubs on. Major hygiene issue. This definitely contributes to stress and ensures patient are in their system.3. At least in unit 63 there is no patient orientation to help get acclimated to this new environment. You literally have to ask for simple items such as towels, shaver, cups, creamer for coffee , sugar, condiments for the extremely bland food, deodorant, bars of soap were not available.4. While I was there, the water system went down for eight hours. The staff had no clue what to do, bottled water was not made readily available and the patients were not all directly told what the situation was. Instead they locked us out the bathrooms in our units without letting us know what was going out. We were unable to brush our teeth or take showers until after lunch. All of the patients were severely inconvenienced since most of the medications that we are given makes you extremely thirsty.5. There is no mechanism to purchase additional items such as shirts or sweat pants. Even if you came in with money you could not use it at all! Another major stressor since you only have the set of clothes you came in.6. Facility is extremely dated, they do have plans to move in September of 2020.This place has more of a scared straight vibe than a welcoming therapeutic facility.I may update this in the future as more horrid memories come to me.
