About Sandstone Care

Teens and young adults are able to receive outpatient addiction care at SandStone Care. They have a clinic located in Rockville, Maryland. The organization is accredited by The Joint Commission and are LegitScript certified. They are also members of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers.

Their outpatient programs are age-specific, which I like. This allows them to focus on the specific needs and challenges within the teenage and young adult community. They do accept more major insurance plans.

If you need a higher level of care but you don’t require 24-hour supervision, their partial hospitalization program (PHP) is ideal for you. You will attend the program five days per week for a total of up to 25 hours per week. The program is four weeks in length.

Their intensive outpatient program (IOP) has less frequent visits but you will still receive the same quality of care. You attend your sessions three to four days a week, totaling 16 hours per week. This program is 12 weeks in length

During your time in the program, you’re going to learn life skills and coping mechanisms. You will learn how to manage stress, prevent relapse, gain accountability and improve your self-reliance.

Your treatment plan is going to be customized based on your goals. Your care team will update it as you continue with your treatment to make sure it reflects current goals and needs. I like that they keep their group sessions and activities small. You will be able to attend group, individual and family counseling. They can also provide medication management.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

inpatient iconInpatient Rehab

Inpatient rehab enables clients to focus exclusively on their recovery while living in a highly structured and supportive environment. Inpatient treatment is typically designed for clients who have just completed detox, are in early recovery, and/or are at an elevated risk of relapse. Their treatment generally involves intensive addiction counseling, including individual, group, and family counseling. Many inpatient rehabs also offer recovery-focused life skills training and/or holistic therapies, such as yoga, massage, and meditation.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

aftercare iconAftercare

Clients receiving support in a rehab aftercare program typically partner with their case manager and care team to identify and access the services that best align with their recovery needs and goals. Rehab aftercare services are designed to evolve with clients' changing needs to promote their long-term sobriety. Care modalities are highly customized and may include a range of medical, mental health, and social service resources, including peer coaching, career counseling, and 12 step program induction.

12-step icon12-Step

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

sober-living iconSober Living Homes

Sober Living Houses (SLHs), aka sober homes or halfway houses, are safe, substance-free, supportive living facilities for those recovering from substance abuse. Ideal for those who've just been through inpatient or outpatient treatment, SLHs are supervised environments with rules that support sobriety, such as curfews, shared chores, and therapeutic meetings. Residents are also often trained on life skills and coping skills to make it easier to transition into society. SLHs also provide a strong sense of community that can lead to the kind of deep and lasting connections with other sober individuals that supports a new, healthy lifestyle.

heart-hands iconIntervention Services

Intervention services helps family or friends of addicts stage an intervention, which is a meeting in which loved ones share their concerns and attempt to get an addict into treatment. Professional intervention specialists can help loved ones organize, gather, and communicate with an addict. They can guide intervention participants in describing the damage the addict's behavior is causing and that outside help is necessary to address the addiction. The ideal outcome of an intervention is for the addict to go to rehab and get the help they need.

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don’t require 24-hour care. PHPs have structured programming (i.e. individual and/or group therapy), and usually meet 3-5 days a week for around 6 hours (i.e. 9am-3m). Some PHPs are residential (patients sleep on site) and some are not, so patients sleep at home. PHPs can last from 1-6 months, and some offer transportation and meals.

24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care

For intensive-level rehab treatment, 24-hour clinical care in Maryland is an essential tool. Medical staff are available around the clock to supervise the process, which involves cleansing the body of toxins. Close supervision is necessary due to the potential risks of withdrawal symptoms. Medical experts on-site are available to prescribe medications and other forms of treatment to address these symptoms and ensure a safe detox process.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

Detoxification can be medically-supervised in either an outpatient or an inpatient setting. Generally when people talk about “medical detox,” they are referring to an acute care inpatient program, where medical help is available 24/7. Sometimes medically-supervised detox involves taking prescription medications to help the body taper off the substance in question or to reduce the severity of withdrawal symptoms. Sometimes it simply involves monitoring a person to make sure that no complications arise.

Our Policy: Sandstone Care works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact us to verify your specific insurance provider.

Heart icon Treatment

alcohol iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

drugs iconDrug Addiction

Once a person has become addicted to a substance, drug rehab in Maryland is often necessary to overcome that addiction. These programs provide the tools individuals need to manage the physical, mental, and emotional issues involved and begin a successful recovery journey.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

opium iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Hand holding medical sign icon Clinical Services

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) focuses on the relationship between thoughts, feelings and behaviors. It helps people to identify unhealthy thought patterns, and how these may be contributing to destructive behaviors and beliefs. There are a variety of therapies that fit under this general umbrella, including Rational Behavior Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, and Cognitive Therapy.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

desert iconMotivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

couples-therapy iconCouples Therapy

When you participate in couples therapy, you learn how to understand each other better, improve your communication skills, resolve conflict, and improve relationship satisfaction. Your therapist will help you develop skills in each of these areas to strengthen your relationship.

eye-movement iconEye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

EMDR is a therapeutic modality originally developed to help process trauma. In an EMDR session, a patient is prompted to undergo eye movements that mimic those of REM sleep. This is accomplished by watching a therapist's finger move back and forth across, or following a bar of light. The goal is repetitive sets of eye movements that help the brain reprocess memory, which can significantly reduce the intensity of remembered traumatic incidents. Associated memories can heal simultaneously, leaving patients significantly calmer, more stable, and more emotionally relaxed.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

life-skills iconLife Skills

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Nutrition Therapy

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

recreational-therapy iconRecreational Therapy

Recreational therapy (aka therapeutic recreation) uses creative and fun activities to help with addiction recovery. Recreational therapists lead patients in entertaining and engaging activities like sports or games; art (drawing, painting, sculpture); drama, music, and dance; and/or community outings (field trips) to improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being.

medical-detox iconExperiential Therapy

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Most of the youth who go there, don't show up the next day, this is because sandstone's treatment is ineffective and the facility is poorly run. For example the cost for the treatment is immeasurable I mean they bill you an unfathomable amount for what seems like group therapy sessions. The sober living house has you paying 1000 dollars per month just to stay there and you still have to provide for yourself I mean with that money you could rent out a small basement. Don't take your child there, don't put them through what I went through, what kids like me go through in such an overpriced glorified daycare.

I was a patient at the teen inpatient facility in Maryland and was traumatized beyond belief by the staff. It's an unsafe place for children. They were incredibly neglectful of my care and I was groomed by one of the male nurses. I can't speak on the adult facilities or the other locations but the teen center in Maryland is incredibly abusive. Find somewhere safer.

Do not go to this place! My 14-year-old son went here for about a week and during the second week he was attacked by a 17-year-old almost adult. He received 4 to 5 staples in his head and now we are trying to get our money back And payment for the ambulance and hospital visit when we tried to call nobody knew anything and they told us to call billing and when we called billing, nobody answers the phone. There are no adult males or security for the sessions that only seem to arouse anger in the kids. My son was apparently being attacked and nobody did anything for several seconds to minutes. They put the kids in groups. It is not a private session experience. Take my word or experience yourself.

Extremely disappointing. I was forced to remove my troubled 13 year old son from the care of this facility. They requested a reason/history regarding the issues with which my son was struggling. I was explicit, open and frank. To my dismay, in spite of the fact that I told them to do their "due diligence" by speaking to all the clinicians already involved, the staff decided it was easier to pick up the phone and called Child Protectives Services. They reported all the information I provided which was jut a part of a larger complex issue, I was depending on these professionals to handle in a clinical environment. Because they did not do their due diligence, they were unaware that Child protective services was already involved. If you have a choice do not use this facility. The staff does not appear to know what they are doing, particularly when it comes to critical psychologically sensitive problems/issues.

Thank you for sharing your concerns and your experience with Sandstone Care, Urla. We're truly sorry to hear about the challenges you encountered during your son's time at our facility. Your feedback regarding the communication with Child Protective Services is concerning, and we apologize for any distress this may have caused. We deeply regret that the staff's actions did not meet your expectations and that you felt let down during a critical time. We take your feedback seriously and are committed to improving our processes and the overall experience for families and individuals in need. Your comments are essential in helping us address these issues. If you have further questions or concerns, or if there's anything we can do to assist you, please do not hesitate to reach out. I have enjoyed my experiences here and know that I am not alone in them. The therapists and social workers set boundaries (for good reason) early on but make sure to make you feel comfortable where you are. It will always take some hard work, but that s life unfortunately. Ashley is great btw

Well, they kicked me out of the program because they think I need a higher level of care (inpatient). Majorly bummed, but I respect it. Probably the most genuine, caring mental health practitioners I have met. A stellar program that manages both to address the individual and teach evidence-based treatments, such as CBT, DBT, mindfulness, etc. They also incorporate family sessions, although I didn't get to that part. I'm going through a difficult time in my life, and without Sandstone, it would have been so much exponentially worse. I've only ever had one other therapy session that was as real as any of the sessions I had at Sandstone. I'll never forget my time here.

Response from the owner1 year ago
Hey Victoria, Thank you so much for the kind words! We understand how difficult the treatment process can be, so we are thrilled to hear that you had such a great experience with us. Our staff really does care so much about their work and wants nothing more than to help those in need of mental health and/or substance use support. So it is amazing to see their efforts be highlighted. Thank you again for the feedback and we wish you all the best!
