The reality of this facility is very different from what one might expect. Patients are frequently placed in rooms with others of varying ages and different mental health issues, with the expectation that they will interact harmoniously. While the stated goal is to provide support, meaningful therapy is nonexistent. The only therapy provided in my experience consisted of group sessions that felt poorly organized, akin to a disinterested kindergarten class presentation.Patients are sometimes subjected to harassment and unwanted attention from others struggling with severe and misunderstood mental health issues, which the staff seem unprepared or unwilling to address. Medications, both prior and new, are handled with little regard for individual needs, and patients are required to take them or risk being considered a threat. During my stay, I was repeatedly harassed and faced inappropriate behavior, including borderline sexual assault by a man who openly spoke about past violent acts against children, while staff did nothing to intervene even as he harassed others.Upon arrival, I wasn t given a room and had to rest on a couch despite my physical condition, which included significant blood loss. Despite already providing blood samples at the hospital, staff insisted on taking more, while other patients, including those with substance use issues, were not subjected to this.Access to outdoor time was inconsistent and dependent on the whims of those leading the group sessions, which primarily focused on addiction without addressing other issues like suicidal ideation or self-harm. Over my week-long stay, I only had access to outdoor time for a total of maybe around 40 minutes. During my first night, I overheard security guards making dismissive and harmful comments about self-harm, suggesting that those who self-injure should go deeper or just kill themselves and reminiscing about a time when being sad would be met with physical punishment. Knowing they were discussing me, because i was the only patient in that entire room.I strongly advise against seeking treatment at this facility. My hope is that those who have had to endure similar experiences here can find a path to healing after such an environment.

Accepted Insurance

Riverside Mental Health & Recovery Center works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
24-hour clinical care in Virginia features a highly trained team of professionals to treat your physical, mental, and emotional needs. Doctors and nurses are available to prescribe and administer medications. Psychologists and counselors provide professional counseling. Other experts such as nutritionists and addiction specialists may also offer support. This 24/7, comprehensive care is designed to give you the support you need to begin a successful recovery.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

When you enroll in drug rehab in Virginia, a treatment plan is designed by professional staff in order to help you overcome drug addiction and modify addictive behaviors. This may include evidence-based treatments, group and individual therapy, and relapse prevention.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
child-program thumbnail image
Child Program
The providers who specialize in the children's rehab space understand the specialized needs that this population faces. School-based and social services such as tutoring and family counseling are often central to treatment. Child programs may also address the needs of youth experiencing substance abuse in the home, including a parent's or sibling's addiction.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive behavioral therapy in Virginia is a short term form of talk therapy. Participants usually have homework between sessions, which may include journaling, self talk, and setting SMART goals. The aim is to transform negative thought patterns into positive ones.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy helps you understand and manage the emotional and physical responses that often follow witnessing or experiencing traumatic events. Using therapeutic interventions, your therapist works with you to reframe that experience, which in turn reduces your anxiety and helps you regain control over your life.

My experience in the outpatient and inpatient services at riverside mental hospital were nothing short of egregious. In the mental institution it was always freezing and you are only given thin scrubs and thin blankets. They come into your room every 15 minutes to scan an anklet so it s hard to sleep with the noise on top of the cold. For the ladies, they don t provide bras, only underwear and you re in a coed facility so it s very uncomfortable. You are only given 1 sweatshirt to wear when you ask for one ,and sometimes the people who were in charge didn t wash your clothes or put them out for you until days later. I have seizures and I was told by two doctors to stop faking them. They wouldn t listen to a word I said when I expressed I needed more help.Instead, they only increased my medicine which only worked slightly . In the outpatient services the doctor was telling me that I was internalizing the symptoms of someone else with my seizures . She had the notion that I wasn t really experiencing anything that the doctors who saw me at my worst said I had. She lowered all my medication at once and I had to go to the emergency room because I was having mental breakdowns and increased seizures. I told the doctor what I was experiencing and she flipped it onto me saying I haven t been honest with her . I am very displeased and saddened by the treatment I endured .

I had an overall good experience here. Ms. Patricia, Ms. Roxana, and Ms. Brandi are all very sweet and notable nurses. The therapists (Ms. Jackie and Ms. Shawnta) and doctor (Mr. Omari) on the unit were as well. You also can t forget about the teacher, Mr. Todd. They listen to you and genuinely seem to care about the issues you are experiencing. The one thing I would change is the techs; some of them are kind and some of them are definitely on the ruder side.

I feel this facility dropped the ball on my son he was so jerked around in the process of just getting his medication this is just through the emergency process. He s scheduled to go through the outpatient clinic and I pray they treat him better. My son has not been on meds for a whole week now because of a simple process of doing a pre-authorization or administering a new prescription. I get promise after promise from several people they would handle it I feel we were out right lied too from the nurse practitioner who as of yet has not returned phone calls from us responded to the pharmacy that has his prescription that she wrote..or my numerous visits to the facility. And because of the negligence my son is still without medication and it s been a struggle because of it Don t understand how professionals that are put in place to help can turn a blind eye to someone s suffering.I guess we all in this family have to suffer until we can get him to the outpatient process in a few weeks .I m so broken hearted I think when a family member is in a mental process so are the rest of the family Prayers are needed.

Terrible experience here. Extremely ill informed of treatment was given multiple medications with no knowledge of what I was given. Never even met the providers who prescribed them. NEVER seek treatment at Riverside, especially here. This place was an imprisonment except they charge your insurance and you!!! My partner wasn t even given any knowledge of the treatment that was given. The entire facility was cold and you will be given thin blankets with holes that won t keep you warm. Ever since then I have seeked treatment elsewhere because of the experience. I am doing far better than Riverside could have provided. They won t treat you like a person they will treat you like a diagnosis. You ll even have ankle bracelets and check on you every 15 minutes. You won t be receiving much outdoor time. I never wanted to leave a place so badly time there moves extremely slow.

I was in a mental facility here the adolescence one and I found I was treated very poorly they seem to prioritize safely over treatment. The time I was in here I felt they don't care about us here they just give you random meds and expect you to get better and the staff seemed too non chalant about my mental health issues I hated it here made me feel worse.. I can't imagine the helpless people that are severely mentally ill going here it's the worst.. such a toxic environment to be in no idea of what i was getting into no information until you get there I wanted treatment not some random meds.. the only way I survived is the friends I made

This hospital is the worst place for a severely mentally ill patient. My mother has been here twice, and they refused to keep her longer than nine days. The last hospitalization they misdiagnosed her as just having depression when she has had a Dx of a psychotic condition for years. This diminishing the quality of treatment when she is released. Nine days is long enough to stabilize an acute case not a chronic illness. She was medication compliant for a week and a half post discharge before she started missing medication and becoming symptomatic which resulted in her assaulting me. I am miserable with her refusing to move out my apartment but the bright side is she will never be taken to this horrible hospital again as I ve moved her from Newport News. Putting a Bandaid on the mental health care in a community is the most disrespectful thing you can do to the patients and those who have been victimized as a result of violence precipitated by individuals struggling with certain mental issues.

The staff will not let you speak with your loved ones without an "access code" that only the patient can give you.I understand how this is important and keeps my loved one safe. The only problem, is that they don't communicate anything to the patient at all. My friend didn't even know she had an access code to give me.
