I was a patient overnight in the Emergency Department. I wore my ring upon entry and surrendered it, and it was placed in inventory. It was not among my belongings when I was released. The clerk on duty said they would look for it and call me back. I have not received a call. I waited for several days, and then I called to inquire. I have not received a callback. It has now been more than 2 weeks, and I have heard nothing.12/6/2024- sent message Monday12/1/24 to email provided. Have not received a call or response.12/18/2024- Update. I finally got to speak to an advocate after I called, left a voice mail, and sent an email. The advocate said they could do nothing because they had no record of it being inventoried when I arrived. They escalated to Risk Management. They told me they had no record of my ring being inventoried at this location. My mother saw me with my ring when I was transported from Riverside Regional to the psychiatric hospital. I can only assume someone either TOOK it and didn't inventory it or, at BEST, FAILED to inventory my ring, and it's sitting somewhere in a pile of things. Risk Management said, unfortunately, because they don't have a record, they won't reimburse me. Why would I lie? It was a very sentimental ring. Riverside makes millions of dollars. They should believe their patrons and patients. At this point, I have contacted my lawyer. I would tell anyone seeking care here to be very cautious about going to this facility just based on my experience and the other Google reviews. This place makes the Riverside system look really bad. I don't say this lightly because I have been a loyal patient at Riverside for years, and I love my care team. I fear even talking to my lawyer will not allow me to have a satisfactory resolution. I truly hope this message is a catalyst for change and they improve their procedures and processes, especially given they are caring for people who are there for mental health.

DO NOT SEND YOURSELF OR YOUR CHILDREN HERE.I have been in this facility two times, both times against my will. I can tell you that they do not care about your mental health, they care about their job and getting money. That is all they care about. These are teens literally dealing with emotional distress of wanting to off themselves but if they have any behavioral issues then they will be put on something called red?? Getting locked up in your white room with nothing but a white bed and food gets delivered to you. This place will traumatize you. It seriously will, I left with more mental problems then i came in with. The place doesn t even help with mental problems, it honestly doesn t.I would talk with other teens there, get there story, we would play mario on the tv or something then i d have to talk to a doctor, They prescribe you with meds then you leave. There is absolutely nothing that helps with mental health in this place, and the staff do not care. I ve gotten more help from the other teens in this place then the actual professionals. This place is horrible, nothing will destroy your mental health more than getting locked up in a room for 1-2 weeks with no outside contact. it s so horrible.

Accepted Insurance

Riverside Mental Health & Recovery Center works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
24-hour clinical care in Virginia features a highly trained team of professionals to treat your physical, mental, and emotional needs. Doctors and nurses are available to prescribe and administer medications. Psychologists and counselors provide professional counseling. Other experts such as nutritionists and addiction specialists may also offer support. This 24/7, comprehensive care is designed to give you the support you need to begin a successful recovery.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

When you enroll in drug rehab in Virginia, a treatment plan is designed by professional staff in order to help you overcome drug addiction and modify addictive behaviors. This may include evidence-based treatments, group and individual therapy, and relapse prevention.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive behavioral therapy in Virginia is a short term form of talk therapy. Participants usually have homework between sessions, which may include journaling, self talk, and setting SMART goals. The aim is to transform negative thought patterns into positive ones.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy helps you understand and manage the emotional and physical responses that often follow witnessing or experiencing traumatic events. Using therapeutic interventions, your therapist works with you to reframe that experience, which in turn reduces your anxiety and helps you regain control over your life.

I don t leave reviews like this, but I hope you ll read if you truly are considering inpatient treatment here. I was discharged less than a week ago from the adult psychiatric unit. I left worse than I came in. I went in for help with my mental health out of complete desperation. Once (voluntarily) admitted, I was treated like less than a human. The techs there wouldn t even look at me as I came up to the desk for help. I saw a therapist for a full session once out of my four days of treatment, when I was promised to see them every day. On my third day of treatment I asked to see a therapist again, had to ask FIVE times, and ultimately saw a therapist for no more than five minutes.Upon wanting to discharge, I was informed that although I came in voluntarily, I would not be able to leave- even against medical advice- because I was suicidal when I came in. IF I HAD KNOWN I WOULD BE HELD AGAINST MY WILL, I NEVER WOULD HAVE COME.The only thing that was positive about my experience was that I was physically safe. Other than that, my time consisted of all day every day group therapy- where all but two sessions were focused on substance abuse. I did not receive any helpful information from group therapy. The kicker of it all, when I met with my care team asking to leave, I finally let out the biggest sob of my life and BEGGED to go HOME. My nurse and case worker, who I thought were my advocates, looked right through me and then had the nerve to ask why I was crying, as if I was an inconvenience to them. The psychiatrists pushed me to stay simply for med management and even approached me with an attitude and argued with me about why the reason I wanted to leave wasn t valid.I got out by the skin of my teeth and with the help of my supportive family.IF YOU NEED HELP, GO ANYWHERE ELSE.

Do NOT come here if you are looking for help with self harm or suicidal ideations. My wife was there for 4 days and it was the worst experience of their life. They left with more trauma than when they went in. I urge you if you are looking at this place for yourself or your loved one please go somewhere else. Most of the staff there were incredibly rude and disrespectful and it was clear they just thought everyone was crazy and did not care.

This is by far the worst place you could ever be at sometimes your treated better but others it s so bad it made me feel worse then before I went in I was 14 and 15 when I went to this hospital I had a few staff that were good and others were terrible I was told things that no one should ever have to hear at the time I was dealing with SH I was told by one of the staff I should be ashamed of myself and when I had panic attacks they would give me Benadryl and that was it but sometimes when I have my panic attacks I go non verbal or feel like I can t move my legs because of how tense they are and I had a bad one and they tried to send me to my room but I couldn t move I don t really remember how I got into the sensory room but I did and the next day one of the techs were talking about how I was faking it and I tried to explain how it s real and I wasn t making it up I didn t feel seen or heard I also had a bad experience with them taking my blood for testing I had bruises from them trying to take my blood for 3 or 4 days they kept telling me it s because I m dehydrated and I m not drinking enough water but I was drinking so much I felt like I had to pee every few minutes

The reality of this facility is very different from what one might expect. Patients are frequently placed in rooms with others of varying ages and different mental health issues, with the expectation that they will interact harmoniously. While the stated goal is to provide support, meaningful therapy is nonexistent. The only therapy provided in my experience consisted of group sessions that felt poorly organized, akin to a disinterested kindergarten class presentation.Patients are sometimes subjected to harassment and unwanted attention from others struggling with severe and misunderstood mental health issues, which the staff seem unprepared or unwilling to address. Medications, both prior and new, are handled with little regard for individual needs, and patients are required to take them or risk being considered a threat. During my stay, I was repeatedly harassed and faced inappropriate behavior, including borderline sexual assault by a man who openly spoke about past violent acts against children, while staff did nothing to intervene even as he harassed others.Upon arrival, I wasn t given a room and had to rest on a couch despite my physical condition, which included significant blood loss. Despite already providing blood samples at the hospital, staff insisted on taking more, while other patients, including those with substance use issues, were not subjected to this.Access to outdoor time was inconsistent and dependent on the whims of those leading the group sessions, which primarily focused on addiction without addressing other issues like suicidal ideation or self-harm. Over my week-long stay, I only had access to outdoor time for a total of maybe around 40 minutes. During my first night, I overheard security guards making dismissive and harmful comments about self-harm, suggesting that those who self-injure should go deeper or just kill themselves and reminiscing about a time when being sad would be met with physical punishment. Knowing they were discussing me, because i was the only patient in that entire room.I strongly advise against seeking treatment at this facility. My hope is that those who have had to endure similar experiences here can find a path to healing after such an environment.
