About Region Ten Community Services Board

Region Ten Community Services - Preston Avenue Peterson Counseling Center is an outpatient counseling center in Charlottesville, Virginia. They offer outpatient treatment for adults who have substance use disorder and for people with mental health conditions.

Your treatment here is entirely personalized to you and what you need for recovery. That might mean uncovering and working through the issues that affect your addiction or developing coping strategies for relapse prevention. They can help with psychiatric care and psychiatric medication management, too.

This counseling center has a rather unique model. They specifically offer 12 one on one therapy sessions over 12 weeks. Your program can incorporate those 12 sessions as well as group therapy sessions for addiction. They also have an intensive outpatient program if you are in the early stages of recovery and need a more thorough level of care. Along the way they have recovery support coaches who are other people in recovery who can guide you through the process based on their own lived experience.

The best thing I noticed about this treatment center is that there isn’t a big hurdle to starting care. You can get started with a walk in assessment during their business hours, and no appointment is necessary.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

12-step icon12-Step

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

For those experiencing mental health challenges, including substance use disorder, dialectical behavior therapy in Virginia offers an evidence based method of treatment. This therapy teaches skills for emotional regulation and interpersonal relations so you can break free from negative patterns.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

couples-therapy iconCouples Therapy

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

I received treatment at Region Ten a few months ago and the results weren't even close to what I expected, there are so many things that should change in here but the first one is the interest they have on their patients. It just seemed like they didn't care.

I called to inquire about IOP and ended up get scolded by Rita. She really took it upon herself to let me know how poor I planned while simultaneously acting like the help I was asking for was way too much. She didn t let me ask any questions or find out about the program. My impression is that this company is pretty worthless.

No-one ought to hand out free Narcan on May 9th to be misused by indigent since that's not everyone's problem and they can harm each other. This place is a laughing stock and danger to everyone. Region ten joins ranks of deranged in need of reprimand.

I had high hopes, that my son could get some help with counseling services through region 10. The first session was horrible. the counselor tried to explain the human brain to my son. The second session was worse. The third session also did nothing to help, and the fourth session resulted in my son making up a situation where I hit him with a bat. (that never happened, we don t even own a bat). The counselor did not speak with me, or ask about the story that my son told. She just contacted CPS, alleging that I hit my son with a bat. If you re looking for a Quality child counseling, I would not recommend region 10.

S/o to the magical unicorn that fits into this 12-session model. My therapist was great, but no one could be expected to "fix this" in 12 weeks. I understand I can get in line again...Also, be prepared for a wait, then a grueling, invasive, and extensive intake process. For intake, I recommend not bringing every trauma out of the box at a time no one can help you work through the triggers. Its basically saying "hey let's go swimming without any lifeguards around"... Potentially reckless based on who is swimming.Great council, friendly reception staff, and multiple scheduling errors and miscommunications with the office manager before getting into my therapist and having a set reoccurring schedule with her.

Hi I do not recommend working with Region Ten. Their service sucks and isn't helpful. Communication sucks with everyone especially case management!! I've personally have reached out to them on multiple occasions for weeks and they refuse to answer. Always have their phones turned off. Both their work phone and office phone!! They refuse to get back with you in a timely manner and don't apologize and make up for their actions and behavior!! Please... if you have anyone with a disability or anything and are thinking about working with Region Ten. DO NOT!!! I'd save you the stress!! If you think they'll help you and do their jobs they won't!! I do not know how their still an organization!!!!

I called to schedule a sit down with someone to discuss what services they offered for my family of 4 and short story short...i decided against making the 4 different intake appointments for us because I feel that it is unnecessary, an invasion of privacy, and ineffective to give my and my husband's and my children's information and defects over the phone to someone who may be a trained mental health professional OR NOT. Also, why can't we be dealt with as unit. And from what the 2 people I spoke to eluded to was that they only provided counseling and therapy, in home and out...not what we needed...and if they do provide more, I guess I'll never know. Disappointing interactions and very non-informative.

Overall, Region Ten has a TON of potential to grow from a diversity standpoint. But where they miss the mark is that although they talk about needing more clinicians of color to identify with their population which is about 70% minorities, the people in power contradict themselves. I m certainly proud of the new director of training, whom I feel has what it takes to turn that part of Region Ten s history around. Specifically, the PACT team is a prime example of what I mean. As a staff, the environment definitely feels like a family. However, unfortunately the interim program manager has a micro managing problem. You know the type that means well yet can t help their mindset from being so conditioned by the Region Ten supervising culture. While I indeed have some rewarding moments at that department, my abrupt departure is just another example of how far Region Ten still has to go in properly preparing some of their must crucial positions. For example, you can t expect a clinician to have a perfectly set schedule with impeccable communication with high-needs clients that have a proven track record of being unpredictable. Oh yeah, and mind you I just had a newborn daughter the previous month. However, balancing that life adjustment along my caseload obviously wasn t appreciated enough, which in hindsight showed me the manager s true colors. I m not going to pretend like I m perfect, but considering the desperate need for clinicians of color (I expected to be molded more. Obviously, I had to witness that It doesn t work that way which is why this agency will continue to suffer from high turnover ratios until they revamp some age old approaches they use with employment and training.
