About Life Healing Center

The Life Healing Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico was a mental health and addiction treatment center that stood as a beacon of hope for those seeking recovery. They’re permanently closed now, but this facility primarily focused on trauma informed and peer supported treatment for those who were looking to take back their lives.

I appreciate that the Life Healing Center wasn’t just interested in providing a blanket treatment for every person who walked through their doors. If you’ve ever struggled with traumatic experiences or addiction, you’ll know that everybody processes trauma differently. Life Healing Center provided personalized care plans for anyone seeking residential treatment, medically supported detox or aftercare programs.

While Healing Life Center doors were open, they accepted BlueCross BlueShield, Magellan Health and Aetna insurance. But, Healing Life Center provided support for those with any insurance-related questions and would even offer to verify your insurance benefits for free, which I think goes to show how deeply they care about supporting those who are seeking recovery.

The facility shared that after 30 years of operation, they were no longer able to keep their doors open because of economic impact after the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s saddening to read, especially because of how beautiful the landscaping of this facility was. Life Healing Center was located on nine acres that housed rustic cabins, stunning mountain views, a bunch of places to go walking or hiking and a library. With all of that free and gorgeous space, this facility also supported weekly family therapy visits too.

Accepted Insurance

Life Healing Center works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one’s body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal. At Life Healing Center, their medically monitored detox program offers a safe, secure, and comfortable environment in which patients can take this essential first step on their recovery path. And once they have successfully completed detox, they can transition directly into the program that will help them to achieve both their immediate and long-term goals.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don’t require 24-hour care. PHPs have structured programming (i.e. individual and/or group therapy), and usually meet 3-5 days a week for around 6 hours (i.e. 9am-3m). Some PHPs are residential (patients sleep on site) and some are not, so patients sleep at home. PHPs can last from 1-6 months, and some offer transportation and meals.

Treatments

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Animal therapy (aka pet therapy or animal-assisted therapy) can be very healing, as it allows patients to bond with animals, who give unconditional love. This is particularly useful for those who suffered trauma by the hands of people, who may be able to trust and form closer attachments to animals than humans at certain stages of rehabilitation.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Equine therapy, aka equine-assisted therapy (EAT), is a form of experiential therapy that involves interactions and activities with horses. It does not necessarily involve riding horses, but all activities related to horses, such as feeding, grooming, haltering and leading them. A mental health professional frequently oversees the activities (often in conjunction with a horse professional), and helps patients process their thoughts, feelings, and behavior patterns during and/or after the interaction.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

EMDR is a therapeutic modality originally developed to help process trauma. In an EMDR session, a patient is prompted to undergo eye movements that mimic those of REM sleep. This is accomplished by watching a therapist's finger move back and forth across, or following a bar of light. The goal is repetitive sets of eye movements that help the brain reprocess memory, which can significantly reduce the intensity of remembered traumatic incidents. Associated memories can heal simultaneously, leaving patients significantly calmer, more stable, and more emotionally relaxed.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals. Serenity Program at Life Healing Center provides life-affirming comprehensive care for adult men and women ages, 18 and above, who been struggling with unresolved trauma, including symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

My experience at life healing center was amazing. I was there for extreme trauma. The staff were amazing and accommodating to your need. The spiritual healing was amazing. Counselors and medical team Amazing. Everyone very pleasant. If you go there and focus on what you re there for it s amazing what you learn. The tools they give you to go on and live a happy life. There you have a routine which I needed. You also are able to walk around freely and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The food was amazing. I also met a lot of amazing people there and stayed in contact with them. It s a no judgement environment. Have an open mind and take in everything. Thank you life healing center for you support and guidance. I appreciate everything all the staff has done for me. They truly care about your healing.

Understaffed, no discernable treatment plan, lucky to see a therapist once a week. I even had 3 times when there wasn't enough food for dinner so I had to skip dinner. Even after losing 2 therapists they increased patient count from 26 to 41 patients. They couldn't even keep track of medications and handed out wrong medication to multiple patients. This place is truly a mess and needs to be close to protect patient lives. They even "streeted" two extremely disturbed individuals at the facility. They dumped them at a local hotel.

My time at LHC was nothing short of miraculous. While LHC does have it's short comings, as with any type of therapy, my experience gave me the tools needed to reshape and redesign my life in a much healthier way than before going to LHC. My work with the therapist provided the tools needed to move forward with life. Staff members were incredibly friendly and helpful. LHC offers a wide array of therapeutic events and opportunities that are very helpful to a willing participant.

Go ANYWHERE else. The therapists constantly retraumatize you and do not offer help. Was in the program 8 days and only received one 1 hour therapy session on day 6. Don't do it. Go anywhere else. I am worse of than I was when I let home.

I was there 3 weeks before I was seen by a doctor about the possibility of getting on medication. And the only reason that happened was because I mentioned it after finding out that another client had been seen on the matter after only 3 days. The goal here is to help with trauma. But on my 7th day someone walks in while I m sleeping & shines a flashlight right at my face! Triggering a very real trauma response from me which nearly got ME kicked out of the program. In my time there, there was a client who would not stop touching themself &/or continuously gawking & staring at other clients to the point of making many of them uncomfortable. And then would, so I heard, spend all night banging & thrashing around in their room preventing others from being able to sleep. It wasn t until this person resorted to self harm to get the attention they were seeking that something was finally done about it. I saw a client get accused of lying when they pointed out that their med count was way off from what it was just 10 hours before. Calling clients liars when they are doing their best to protect themselves is counter productive to the idea of healing one s trauma. Another client who brought their own medication, found out that the medication they brought with them had been disposed of despite it belonging to them. Which in my opinion, especially when this program is considered voluntary, is destruction of property &/or theft! I let LHC know by my 10th day there, I believed their program had nothing more to offer me, and that I should be sent home. I was told by the faculty because I was sent there by my tribe in my (special) case. I was at the mercy of the tribe s recommendation. And therefore, since they believed I still needed care. I cannot leave. So I was kept a total of 41 days. While there, came a time the clientele, as a community agreed that LHC was too short staffed to take on anymore clients to accommodate the needs of those of us that were already there. We brought this to the attention of the staff in a meeting. To which they brought in more clients. Then proceeded to pass blame onto to the parent company (Acadia) for making that decision. I also seen with my own eyes clients get handed other client private information and even saw a client find another ex clients private information in the cafeteria trash, which I believe are both HIPA violations. This client got an ex client s drivers license, insurance information and phone number, amongst other things. Luckily, said client only used this information to contact the the latter to let them know how easy it was for them to get this information. FOUND IT IN THE CAFETERIA TRASH. Again. I am an eye witness to this! It was my understanding that after 15 days the discharge process begins, & you find out at that time when you ll be leaving the facility. I however in my (special) case, didn t hear a thing about my departure until 4 days prior to my exit. I didn t see any solid proof I would be discharged until 15 hours before my flight home. I want to give one more (at least verbally, here) in this review to Quinn, Victor and Walking Star for being incredibly helpful & kind in their short interactions with me/us. But, I can t only because to my understanding they technically don t work at LHC. They are folks who come to LHC to help out. Heck, I think Victor even volunteers his time. Which is why I can t accredit that star directly to LHC. It is my hope that LHC addresses this review and all other 1 star reviews with the same tenacity & respect that they do with their 5 star reviews. On a final note; my tribe that was mentioned? Claimed they never heard from LHC about my discharge. And stated they even grew concerned about what may have been going on with me they NEVER insisted, or were even asked, about whether or not I should stay beyond my desire to do so. 41 days. Yet, no new options available for someone enlisted beyond week 4. Can t help but to question the real motive there.

Sexual harassment. They made me completely strip down for my intake. Before coming in they said the search wasn t that thorough. I spoke with ten other clients and none of them had to strip. Two of the older clients only had to empty their pockets. That is ageism and discrimination. I feel violated and unsafe.I had two drinks on the flight before I arrived and they had me in detox. It was impossible to sleep with the lights on and having people check on you regularly. I averaged three hours and they planned on having me there for six days despite being sober the morning of. It pushed me into a mania and I ended up worse than before. They wouldn t prescribe my sleeping medication but gave lunesta to other clients.
