About Journey Malibu

Journey Malibu is a private luxury drug and alcohol rehab center in Malibu, California. They provide adult detoxification services, inpatient treatment, medication assisted treatment (MAT), and aftercare. Each client participates in the development of their personalized treatment plan.

Journey Malibu provides a safe and relaxing setting to detox. Staff assist with every step of the process, helping clients manage withdrawal symptoms through medication and therapy. As clients complete this phase of treatment, staff prepare them for the next level of care.

Inpatient care occurs in a private residence with luxury amenities and beach access. During their stay, clients follow a structured schedule of recovery activities while staff tends to their needs. Treatment plans can include individual therapy, 12 Step groups, spiritual support, relapse prevention training, co-occurring disorder treatment, career planning and support, and physical and nutritional support. Therapeutic methods include narrative therapy, somatic experiencing, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), sober coaching, art therapy, adventure therapy, family therapy, biofeedback, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), and yoga therapy.

MAT is the application of FDA-approved drugs (such as methadone) in addiction treatment. MAT is closely monitored by staff to ensure client safety.

Aftercare support helps clients prepare for post treatment life with wraparound services, alumni support, and connections with local resources.

Journey Malibu works with most major insurance plans, including United Behavioral Health, Aetna, Cigna, and Premera BlueCross, among others. Clients are urged to confirm coverage with their plan, as out of network benefits may vary.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care

At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

12-step icon12-Step

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

aftercare iconAftercare Support

Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

heart-hands iconIntervention Services

Intervention services helps family or friends of addicts stage an intervention, which is a meeting in which loved ones share their concerns and attempt to get an addict into treatment. Professional intervention specialists can help loved ones organize, gather, and communicate with an addict. They can guide intervention participants in describing the damage the addict's behavior is causing and that outside help is necessary to address the addiction. The ideal outcome of an intervention is for the addict to go to rehab and get the help they need.

Shield icon Insurance

Our Policy: Journey Malibu works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact us to verify your specific insurance provider.

Heart icon Treatment

alcohol iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

drugs iconDrug Addiction

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

opium iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Hand holding medical sign icon Clinical Services

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

art-brush iconCreative Arts Therapy

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Eating Disorder Treatment

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and dysfunctional eating patterns. Many psychologists and other mental health professionals consider eating disorders to be food addictions, meaning food is being used in an addictive way (similar to drug or alcohol addiction). Certain substance abuse treatment programs will have treatment for eating disorders as one of the services offered. An eating disorder may also present as a co-occurring disorder or dual diagnosis alongside drug and alcohol addiction. They treat eating disorders as a secondary diagnosis.

medical-detox iconExperiential Therapy

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

eye-movement iconEye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

EMDR is a therapeutic modality originally developed to help process trauma. In an EMDR session, a patient is prompted to undergo eye movements that mimic those of REM sleep. This is accomplished by watching a therapist's finger move back and forth across, or following a bar of light. The goal is repetitive sets of eye movements that help the brain reprocess memory, which can significantly reduce the intensity of remembered traumatic incidents. Associated memories can heal simultaneously, leaving patients significantly calmer, more stable, and more emotionally relaxed.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Fitness Therapy

Fitness therapy blends exercise with psychotherapy for a fun, inspiring, and effective way of treating addiction and other issues. By incorporating movement into counseling sessions, clients become more empowered, motivated, and goal-oriented, all while strengthening their bodies and becoming more flexible. Fitness Therapy is usually used to complement a course of treatment (inpatient or outpatient) to make it even more successful. Increasing the connection between a patient’s mind and body helps both with healing as well as in creating new, healthy habits.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

life-skills iconLife Skills

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

desert iconMotivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Nutrition Therapy

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

LIARS-Fakes scammers went in beliving I was going to the house where there was a pool close to the beach, where there was yoga. Counselor 24/7. Private rooms. Nice grassy yard I can walk and enjoy the beach view, to help my mental state. I was suprised when I was picked up dropped up to a metterinean style hpuse in the hills of malibu over lookin a few other homes. 5bedroom home. No pool. No beach access no onsite yoga no beach view. No green grass. I literally left after 2 days. Bored out of my mind was continuay told it was so i can detox..but I was sent to a house called solistace house that wasnt in the brouchure or website wasnt what I promised I was unhappy. O was told they wouldnt move me to that house as they felt I was in the right place. I found out also they paid for me to get there but if you leave early or stay the whole time you better hope you have money to get yourself back home or your stranded and out of luck and they dont care. Even if your there only for mental illness in order for them to get there $55,000 from the insurance company you have to be addicted to some sort of drugs so they will put that on the insurance claim just so they can get paid ir they say the insurance will deny you. Family memebers are not alliwed to call amd check om you and not givem information until you sign a paper saying its ok even tho my husband gave them all my person info and confidential information before I was there. Youll go in thinking youll be happy and come out worse then before please DONT GO HERE!! you will be sorry. BBB DOESNT EVEN HAVE INFO ON THEM.

Journey Malibu saved my life. I was as skeptical as anyone going into rehab would be. By the end of my second month there, the Journey Malibu house was like my second home. The various therapy methods I found there opened and expanded my mind to places beyond my initially limited conceptions of life and how to deal. I will remember the staff and their genuine care and love they gave me and the other clients, forever. All forms of offered therapy was unique and insightful and incredibly powerful. It transformed my life and gave me tools to go out and then further transcend it on my own, and that is true empowerment. It was difficult choosing one of many places to go, but because Journey had way less clients at a time than the others I'd found it offered intimacy and the ability to make the connections I did. It was also crucial I go to a place that offered holistic treatment because what I needed was to shed light on the core issues of my behaviors, and it most certainly did. Regardless of the treatment and the staff, the facility itself is absolutely beautiful and the feeling Id get just waking up and walking outside into the beauty was priceless. I will forever be grateful for Journey Malibu and my two life changing months there.

I just want to thank Journey Malibu again for the ways they have changed my life beyond my expectations! The staff, doctors, and instructors came together and worked as a team to help me overcome my addictions. They quickly identified my own personal issues I was having that created the triggers that lead to my 14 year run as a daily addict. And then they taught me, how to work through and get beyond those issues, and new situations that arise, without the use of of alcohol and drugs. All the diverse programs and classes that I went through there helped build a solid foundation for sobriety, in which has grown tremendously. Since Journey Malibu, I have been promoted at work twice, my relationship with my daughter is amazing, and I have learned to love life again when I thought there was no hope left. I am now 2 years and 67 days sober and I do thank Journey Malibu and all the wonderful, experienced, and caring people there that had a key role in making this possible!Thank You!!!!!

My time at Journey may be the best investment I ever made in Myself. It's easy to fall in love with the surroundings and comfort available to clients, but in the end we are all there for one reason; to heal. Every member of the Journey staff makes themselves available to your needs. The therapeutic process is second to none and you know very quickly that they care about what is best for YOU. I was treated like an adult; not an addict. I was afforded freedoms and personal space; not locked in a room and guarded like a prisoner. My therapists were knowledgeable, professional and compassionate. I only spent 10 days at Journey before I had to transfer to another facility for insurance reasons and I felt like I was leaving family. I would absolutely recommend Journey Malibu for anyone needing personal attention to address their needs. They will do everything they can to help a person in need. They changed my life.
