About Excel Treatment Center

Founded in 2013, Excel Treatment Center has grown into one of the most outcome driven and successful substance abuse outpatient treatment facilities in the area. Excel Treatment Center is privately owned and is designed to offer an alternative, personal approach to substance abuse treatment.

The Excel Treatment Team is dedicated to providing clients with comprehensive, individualized treatment in an intimate environment. Their clinical staff is trained in substance abuse, social work and professional counseling services and are available to clients for individual, family and group sessions. The goal at Excel Treatment Center is to ensure that clients are given the tools and skills needed to maintain long term sobriety.

Excel Treatment Center exists specifically to provide young adults and adults with compassionate, individualized, science-based treatment of alcohol and substance abuse problems, emotional distress and behavioral problems.

Excel Treatment Center provides a full complement of Adult Outpatient Services to clients and their families including: Substance Abuse Evaluation, Adult Intensive Outpatient Programs, Relapse Prevention Groups, Second Opinion Evaluations for DUI and DWI, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Specialized Substance Abuse Groups, Psychoeducational and Holistic Groups, Family Support Groups, Case Management, Weekly Sessions, Urine Drug Screens, Psychiatric Consultations, Medication Management and Vivitrol (Naltrexone) Injections. Outpatient counseling is intended for individuals who are in need of ongoing support in their recovery from addiction while minimizing disruption in their lives. We also work with Morris County Probation and IDRC. Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is offered in both the day and evening hours.

It is an integrative approach for individuals who require a structured treatment program to assist them in overcoming addiction. In addition to evidence-based practices, we offer holistic treatments as part of our integrative approach to addiction recovery. This includes mindfulness, experiential therapy, expressive art therapy and yoga for recovery. “So the opposite of addiction is not sobriety. It is human connection.” – Johann Hari. At Excel Treatment Center they understand that addiction is a biopsychosocial disease and that it impacts all facets of an individual’s life. A large part of our treatment program is assisting our clients in creating a strong, supportive sober community for themselves by encouraging clients to engage in regular outside self-help support groups. They also work closely with The Milestone House, a sober supportive 12-step living program for men and women, 18+, located right next door. This is not just a sober living facility, but a recovery program that helps our clients to build and maintain a long-lasting recovery by creating a sober supportive community and providing a safe space to transition into sober life. The Milestone House offers in-house meetings, workshops and intensive case management services to assist their residents in getting back to work or school and focus on creating a high level of accountability. This is where treatment life and real life come together and real recovery begins.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

aftercare iconAftercare Support

Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

heart-hands iconIntervention Services

Intervention services helps family or friends of addicts stage an intervention, which is a meeting in which loved ones share their concerns and attempt to get an addict into treatment. Professional intervention specialists can help loved ones organize, gather, and communicate with an addict. They can guide intervention participants in describing the damage the addict's behavior is causing and that outside help is necessary to address the addiction. The ideal outcome of an intervention is for the addict to go to rehab and get the help they need.

sober-living iconSober Living Homes

Sober Living Houses (SLHs), aka sober homes or halfway houses, are safe, substance-free, supportive living facilities for those recovering from substance abuse. Ideal for those who've just been through inpatient or outpatient treatment, SLHs are supervised environments with rules that support sobriety, such as curfews, shared chores, and therapeutic meetings. Residents are also often trained on life skills and coping skills to make it easier to transition into society. SLHs also provide a strong sense of community that can lead to the kind of deep and lasting connections with other sober individuals that supports a new, healthy lifestyle.

12-step icon12-Step

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

Heart icon Treatment

alcohol iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

drugs iconDrug Addiction

Drug rehab in New Jersey is the process of addressing the complex issues involved with addiction. Challenges are identified and addressed through individual and group counseling. Participants learn how to manage these issues without the use of substances.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

opium iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Hand holding medical sign icon Clinical Services

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

couples-therapy iconCouples Therapy

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

art-brush iconCreative Arts Therapy

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

life-skills iconLife Skills

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

desert iconMotivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

nicotine iconNicotine Replacement Therapy

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Rational Behavior Therapy

Rational Behavior Therapy (RBT) is a form of cognitive behavioral therapy meant to be short-term and comprehensive. It was intended to help clients become more self-sufficent and move forward without the need for expensive, ongoing therapy. It includes an emotional self-help method called “rational self-counseling,” the purpose of which is to give clients all the skills needed to handle future emotional issues by themselves, or with significantly less professional help.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

I have been sober for over 11 years now. I have been a part of the Excel and Milestone community the whole time. People like Mike Frank and Nikoletta Danicic have built something that sets them apart from all of the other treatment options in New Jersey. A real and lasting commitment to community. You can feel the difference when you re here. From the different houses to the coffee shop, The Good Bean. Everything feels intentional and well thought out. Aesthetics are nice but ultimately it s what s underneath that counts. That goes for people as well as a treatment center. Who works there? Why do they work there? This stuff matters. The people who are drawn to working here feel a connection to the community and it shows. Ultimately what it comes down to is this would I trust them with my family or friends? 100%. I believe they would provide them with the best care I would want for them.

Prior to coming to excel I had been clean for 5 years and then relapsed. Having had a lot of experience going to treatment trying everything from out patient to long term in patient and sober living, I figured I probably needed a combination of the two because my circumstances had changed. I m married with a three year old daughter and a career and that wasn t the case when I first got sober in 2016 but I did decide to go to a sober living house that I had some experience with from that time period. Excel was a requirement of the sober living I went to (The Milestone House) and I m very glad that was the case. The combination of group therapy, with individual counseling and progress based not solely on the curriculum of Excel but how I was actually doing, along with the family program really was the complete package. The groups were always a highlight for me because of the camaraderie and closeness of the community and the ways they kept it very interesting as far as guest speakers, events and activities. The counselors and the staff there really care in a genuine way that s hard to describe because it s so diverse. I was helped one way or another by every staff member at some point in my journey and that is not something that is often duplicated.Excel takes into account life on life s terms. My needs when I first got recovery in 2016 weren t the same in 2023. Obviously recovery is first or there are no other needs but they helped me to figure out a schedule that worked not only for my employer but more importantly to drive an hour home to see my Daughter and Wife. In my humble opinion the difference with Excel isn t only the level of care but the level of how much they care.I would suggest Excel for anyone looking to find sobriety no matter what your situation is. I ve already recommended a very close friend come here who was on the brink of dying and he completed the program a few months after me and is reunited with his family and doing really well.
