About Bright Path Counseling Center – Outpatient

Bright Path Counseling Center is an outpatient behavioral health facility located in North Syracuse, New York. They treat mental health conditions in adults, including co occurring mental health and addiction disorders. They provide DWI evaluations to people who have legal issues because of substance use. They also do other court ordered drug related evaluations. They will give you an assessment in which they will ask about your psychological history and drug use. The staff is trained in many therapeutic methods, and your assessment will determine which is right for you.

They may use unconventional methods like hypnotherapy which takes you between your conscious and the subconscious to get at the root of problems. They will play music and you will enter a state of deep relaxation, The trance the therapist will put you in is similar to daydreaming.

Some people are best treated with methods of therapy that focus on the unique perspective of the individual. For example, you may be treated with Gestalt therapy. This method focuses on the client’s feelings in the present moment. You will be encouraged to engage in experiences beyond simply talking such as reenactment, art, and role playing to address your emotions.

Like most facilities, they also use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) which teaches people to think differently to change hurtful behaviors. Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) is often used to treat dual diagnosis clients. It helps people manage emotions by teaching them skills like mindfulness and distress tolerance along with emotional regulation.

Your therapist will interview you to get to know you. You will discuss the emotions you want to change. You will trace that emotion back to the first time you ever experienced it. They will help you find a new way to process your memories and your beliefs about yourself.

I have mixed emotions about this place while Matthew Kelly is a great counselor there was a miscommunication with appointments at the front end The Administration manager Susie was rude and did not offer guidance on correcting the problem to the point of calling me back and continuing to threaten me with removing my son from the practice by calling the CEO. Again its sad that such an unprofessional person is leading a wonderful crew of counselorsTo respond to the comment below who I am sure is Susie the administration manager. I said thanks for not helping with a tone of voice and hung up on you to end the call you then called me back because you didn't appreciate the call and threatened me to call the CEO of the company. When I asked to speak to the CEO you then back peddled and told me that I cannot because they are retired. Then I said I would not like to speak to you anymore because your disrespectful and did not understand what I was asking. You then called a counselor who was on vacation no less to call me and tell me that if I dont take down my google review that my son can no longer go to brightpath after I already cancelled my appointments and payments. Again you get what you give with attitude. I will not negotiate with my sons mental health like you had your staff ask me to do. The company would be better off with a new administration leader who knows how to speak to the public and keep her story straight. So in short I cancelled the appointments before not allowing us to attend because of administrative feelings. And I repeat it's really disappointing I was on brightpaths side trying to help out you were told that by a counselor.

Distraught over sick family member, irene pretty much said "so what if he dies". Dismissive and rude. Felt like a was talking to an old opinionated aunt. How dare she talk this way when she doesn't even know me. I told supervisor who told me to delete the recording (of the televisit) immediately. She said she was going to talk to a higher up and I never heard back.

Accepted Insurance

Bright Path Counseling Center – Outpatient works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
Intervention services helps family or friends of addicts stage an intervention, which is a meeting in which loved ones share their concerns and attempt to get an addict into treatment. Professional intervention specialists can help loved ones organize, gather, and communicate with an addict. They can guide intervention participants in describing the damage the addict's behavior is causing and that outside help is necessary to address the addiction. The ideal outcome of an intervention is for the addict to go to rehab and get the help they need.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

When you choose drug rehab in New York, you'll participate in a variety of treatments that are designed to help you live a drug-free lifestyle. Common methods of treatment include group, individual, and family counseling, medication management, nutrition, exercise, and management of co-occurring mental health disorders.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

EMDR is a therapeutic modality originally developed to help process trauma. In an EMDR session, a patient is prompted to undergo eye movements that mimic those of REM sleep. This is accomplished by watching a therapist's finger move back and forth across, or following a bar of light. The goal is repetitive sets of eye movements that help the brain reprocess memory, which can significantly reduce the intensity of remembered traumatic incidents. Associated memories can heal simultaneously, leaving patients significantly calmer, more stable, and more emotionally relaxed.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Hypnotherapy (aka guided hypnosis) can be used as a therapeutic modality to treat substance use, especially in terms of quitting smoking cigarettes (nicotine). Clinical hypnotherapists help clients turn their attention inward, accessing unconscious or subconscious material, and then make suggestions that are healthier for the individual. The process can help clients make deep, positive, and lasting changes, including ceasing addictive habits.

Recreational therapy (aka therapeutic recreation) uses creative and fun activities to help with addiction recovery. Recreational therapists lead patients in entertaining and engaging activities like sports or games; art (drawing, painting, sculpture); drama, music, and dance; and/or community outings (field trips) to improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

If you are seeking counseling for an eating disorder DO NOT COME HERE. I have never spoken to a medical about my restrictive ED of 15 years and I finally worked up the courage to discuss it with my therapist, Irene. Her response was "well you look fine" and she proceeded to give me diet tips and low calorie options for various meals for the entirety of my appointment. This was extremely harmful to me and upon discussing it with a coworker, I found out that the same therapist said the same things to her when she sought out treatment for her ED at age 14. Irene needs to better educate herself on how to treat clients with EDs or those clients need to just be booked with more informed counselors. That session was extremely damaging and it needs to be addressed before she harms someone else.

Thank you Holly for your honest feedback. We would like you to know that we have addressed this matter with Irene. If you are interested in returning to Bright Path we can certainly pair you with a different counselor. We hope this message finds you well.

No continuity of care. They change the therapist on you weather you like them or not, Lie as to why they did so. Reseptionist/scheduler is a thoughtless bully. AND what is with the Tarot like cards...are they gonna read my future?? RIDICULOUS!!!!

I just had the most negative experience with the office manager of this place that I have ever experienced with any medical practice. Be warned that if you are a new client and cancel your first appointment with less than 24 hours notice you are barred for being able to make another appointment for 6months. There was zero compassion or empathy for the fact that sometimes getting a person to come to therapy takes convincing. I was absolutely willing to pay a no show fee without question but to barr someone from making another appointment for 6 months when in a mental health setting is unconscionable.

Response from the owner3 weeks ago
Our policies regarding initial appointments are clearly outlined in our intake forms which are emailed to all new clients upon booking their first session. By booking an appointment and becoming a client you agree to adhere to these polices.
